Another detail you left out: There was a big production company investor before Netflix. They funded the production, and when this guy was missing production milestones they threatened to take the entire project away from him. So in order to keep it going he got KEANU REEVES to chip in millions of dollars to the project.

i heard of this rumor... that someone told him Adderall gives you great ideas... and he said, "yeah but i need more than just great ideas..." and someone came up with a new plan... "how about meth?" eureka moment... he was putting production money in his own personal bank account in no time. then he had to come up with the missing money so he started betting on stocks... then it all started to go downhill from there...

No wonder Netflix keeps raising prices every year, and now this household restriction.
I cut off my netflix sub as I didn’t want to pay for their losses out of my pocket.
    Best decision. Never been happier.

That's not how movie finance works though, 47 Ronin flopped way harder than just $20m and the marketing budget. The cinemas take a share of the ticket price, so even if a movie makes its budget back in sales, it's well off actually making its money back. Indy 5 allegedly had a production budget of $300m, and even at a generous cut, and marketing budget ratio of 2x, that means that movie would need to make $600m to break even. A lot of people take the budget, add the marketing and then double it. At the box office, Indy generated $380m in sales. Again, being generous, lets say with the ratio it actually took 70% of the cash (utterly unrealistic), because the sales were top loaded to favour Disney... that's still $266m return, on a $300m budget without accounting for globally marketing the movie. If 47 Ronin spent $25m on marketing, it was probably somewhere in the order of $65-90m in the hole.

if they are forced to pay they would probably sue him for failure to comply with the contract and demand the money they spent on the project

I'm pretty sure that their contract was dogshit on their end to win him over, and there is nothing they can do to get their money back. If they could, they'd already have sued him.

I feel like it says a lot about Netflix and their film quality by the fact that bro just made up the most outlandish shit and was able to get millions out of them.
