all isayama had to do with ymir was reveal that actually the whole time (2000 years) she was keeping down the titan powers for eldians in order to protect them from the rest of the world. the last twist we needed after the s3 the owl episode one was that actually the titans / titan power that eldians hated the whole time was actually a superpower given to them in order to advance the human race as a whole (just how grisha said in that flashback in his activist days) and that while they were doing that, non-eldians got jealous and mad and also other governments felt threatened by regular ppl rising up against them and not needing them anymore so they started demonizing eldians/titan powers and sent them off to paradis and did historical revisionism and lied to the whole world about eldians.
even ymir's motivation would have made sense: just how as a slave her discovering the titan powers was her way to rise up in society, she wanted eldians to use this power for the good of humanity in order to fight against oppressive governments (parallel to king fritz). this is lit what i theorized was gonna happen after s3. i thought ohh ymir has been doing this for 2000 years so that eldians can use their titan powers to rise up against world leaders and governments and protect all humans because she was NOT able to do that against king fritz despite her powers back then.
this would have also made more sense with the whole story being damn near seinen and having strong political themes.

Having listened to the entire debate, there was one thing that especially stood out to me as a misinterpretation of Erens desire for freedom at the end of season 3 when they finally reach the sea. Everyone is pretty floored after seeing the ocean, literally mouths agape. Armins dream had basically come true and all their friends and comrades were stunned to actually witness such a thing. It's a pretty uplifting, powerful moment for the scouts because in a way, reaching that point was the culmination of all their effort and sacrifice. Quite liberating indeed. And then we see Eren; a joyless and deeply troubled young man, filled with disappointment and despair. Why is that, after sharing this dream with Armin? The thing is, Eren was only using the sea as a symbol of the freedom he sought. The walls? A symbol for a cage. The Titans? A symbol of his oppression. This whole outlook shifts when he unlocks the memories of his father. Titans are not the enemy, it's other humans outside of the island. The walls? No longer a symbol of his cage. No.. It has now shifted to THE SEA being a representation of his cage. And his symbol for freedom? The show has since episode 1 set up that in order to achieve the freedom he seeks, his enemies must be eliminated. The titans. But, he was just wrong about attaching "enemy" to titans, and Eren knows that. His whole idea of what it would mean to reach the ocean has been wrong the whole time. He knows that the worst is yet to come. Killing all the titans seemed like such a simple goal, but the situation they've found themselves in is much more complicated, dangerous, and daunting. The fact of the matter is, Eren has already seen the sea in the memories of Grisha. When he finally arrives in person it means nothing to him. When he learned of the existence of humans outside of the walls, he was disappointed. And this is a very meaningful statement that some of the ending defenders twist and bastardize into something it's not. He's disappointed because he has come to realize better than anyone else that their goals are far from met. On the contrary, their struggles have only just begun. If humans didn't exist outside of the walls, victory and tremendous success would have been achieved here on the coast of their little island. All the titans being dead, and all of their hardships behind them. It honestly brings a tear to my eye when I see the pained look on Erens face as he turns to his friends and asks what it will take to finally be free. Honestly, just watch the last scene of season 3 it's one of the best moments in the entire show.

Also, he compared pepper kissing Tony to Mikasa kissing Eren. I’m like… they’re not the same. Pepper kissed Tony on the cheek, and she and Tony had a good relationship and marriage. Shash uses head cannons to protect the ending and misrepresent the story to fit his own narrative of what AOT is. By that logic, he is ignoring an important part of the story and the author's intention.
One cannot use symbolism to defend bad writing and say this makes sense. Basically, we should ignore everything about the character and story structure of the AoT.
I know Shash is one of the biggest ending defenders but, his own arguments are not consistent with Isayama's story.
    Shash:
“you have a westernised version of freedom”
*pulls up quotes that had nothing to do with AOT to justify AOT*
    “Freedom is happiness”??????
“It was Mikasa’s choice to ask Armin what she should do which shows us her agency”
Freedom has more than one definition, and it doesn't matter what culture. Freedom has many philosophical interpretations.
Shash is basically admitted that he is using headcanons to defend 139, while saintitchief is using the actual story and provided evidence for his argument.

There've been other cases of Titans acting irregularly because of their emotions i.e. the titan who addressed a random scout as Ymir and Connie's mom saying "Welcome home". Dina didn't need to be brought up in 139 based on past evidence. It was only there to make Eren more "sad"

    • @thatoneblackdude3333
      @thatoneblackdude3333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yea that was the initial explanation and it made since because of already established facts shown by other titans who did similar things , then chapter 139 happens and throws all that out the window.

I’m starting to think that aot was about division between humanity. He intentionally made the story like this to show that in the end, the fanbase would be forever arguing with each other about the ending, each side convinced that the opposite is completely insane.
I mean think about it, what other series has this much of a divide between the fanbase over it’s ending? Just kidding, I barely read any manga/series so I have no idea.
Edit: actually I figured it out, isayama didn't write it this way, eren did. Eren wrote the story to create a fanbase and divide them. So actually, every retcon in the story is actually intended by eren and every argument against the ending is incorrect. Sorry not sorry you lose eren is god

Just finished watching and I gotta say damn dude. I thought I was good at connecting some of these points and poking holes in their logic. You dismantled Shash's whole house brick by brick. I would love to see a world where Shash reacts to this video, but that shit will never happen.
I just recently joined twitter and I have no idea how you guys haven't jumped off a roof reading some of these takes. I've tried talking with so many people about their thoughts and it always ends up going in circles or them not responding. I talked to someone who said Eldians are a disease and Marleyans aren't racist. I've talked to someone who says that Mikasa's family in the extra panels is adopted and the person that's next to her is Armin, all so she can remain a virgin and still dedicated to Eren until her death. I've had people reply and instantly block me after I ask questions about how they come to their conclusions. I seriously don't understand how this fandom has become so split. From the looks on twitter at least, there are more ending defenders than there are haters. I can only hope most of the people who didn't like it were able to move on to other shows. Hopefully we're the only people trapped by this shit ending.
I went through the GoT downfall and nows time for AoTs. I'm praying for AOE.... but I know its not happening.

I haven’t watched this yet and have no idea who Shash is, and I’ll edit this comment after I watch the vid, but I love the ending of AOT.
It’s heart wrenching, agonising and unfulfilling. I adore it. Even achieved momentary peace for his friends, but the cycle eventually continues.
I didn’t expect AOT to have a happy ending where everyone lived happily ever after, and I really appreciate the heart ache of the ending.
(Also, I seen comments talking about the unconsenual kiss??? I didn’t know ppl disliked that and think even and mikasa didn’t have enough romance. To me, a lot of their romance built up through unsaid words and the kiss represents being too late. Also, in season 3 when mikasa is giving her little “thank you” speech, ‘thank you’ is used in place of “I love you” quite a lot in Japanese media, so I interpret it as a confession which eren confirmed by saying he’d wrap the scarf around her forever.)
ANYWAY, that was a long rant, I’ll come back to this and see if my opinions change later 😮

Eren can only influence attack titan shifters, not any other of the 9, not even the founding, so it's literally impossible for eren to influence ymir, even when she became the titan. Eren's influence started when Ymirs daughters were eaten, not when ymir was eaten by Maria, Rose or shina coz that's still only 3 titans, so they had 3 titans each, attack titan is still not in play, what a terrible take.

I hate that ending defenders have a much more popular platform than rational people like Odin or saintitchief. We should expect more from the series we love and expect them to have well written endings, or else it makes the authors look like they never cared about their series. Especially because of all the incredible moments in AOT. All of the foreshadowing and plot twists, the ending should’ve made the series a timeless masterpiece. Everything Erwin fought for and accomplished, in the end it’s all meaningless because isayama didn’t stick the landing. Coping this hard about AOT’s ending, I think is a clear sign of mental illness. Same can be said about defending eren, who became a mass murdering psychopath and a hypocrite. The amount of people that relate to eren is legitimately, actually terrifying. It seems like a lot of people, especially content creators with large fanbases, have an agenda to praise and defend the ending to avoid hate or controversy from their own fanbase or the general public. The AOT ending reminds me of a funny quote by kaneda from akira when he’s confronting tetsuo:
“Yeah, you’re kind of the mountain. But it’s all GAH-bage!!”

13:50 that's stoicism and it's a real philosophy but you can't make a 1:1 comparision with aot, the difference is that eren HAS the ability to do sth about his situation while the slave only has the ability to bee free of mind. And stoicism doesn't make you just a passive observer in your life but rather makes you keep in mind that everything can be taken or lost the next day (to prepare yourself mentally to face adversity). If eren didn't have the rumbling he might as well enjoy the sea since he has no power to fight the world. That's why the comparision by Saint is flawed but still shows the holes in Shazz logic.

17:15 the reason is because the world isn't like he wanted. Eren expected a blank world whit no humans, natural wonders and freedom instead he found more humans, more violence and more suppression. From this realization Eren developed the desire to create a blank world by himself by killing everyone and destroying everything, forest, cities, history. He wanted a blank world because that was freedom for him
