    I really enjoy this setup. As you said, it's just simple. Yes, you're leaving money on the table, but sometimes that's worth if you don't want a binder of credit cards, or need an app to track all the credits. I just like how simple this is, I think that's a big draw of this setup.
    I used to use this setup exclusively, but since the CFU had the 2x points SUB, I've been using the Chase trifecta for the past few months. After that's done, I think I'll go back to C1, and maybe dip my toes in Chase just to have access to two different ecosystems. Use the CFF for rotating categories, and the CSP for the hotel credit, and the occasional dinner out if I want to earn Chase points instead of C1 points.

    For me, I think the C1 Duo really shines because of two things. Yeah the lack of incentive to use the portal over transfer partners is a bummer, but I try to stock up on points and just pay cash when I book domestic trips. The one great peace of mind of the portal is the price match ability to lock in the cheaper, direct booking price for hotels (haven’t price matched a flight yet) while also reaping the 10x benefits.
    The second thing for me is the broad entertainment category for the S1. Getting 3% back at concerts, movies, tourist attractions, record stores (big one for me), and more just really makes the earnings optimized for me.
    I pray there will be a way to earn elevated gas earnings with C1 one day….

    • @LukesPointsandMiles
      @LukesPointsandMiles  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah the entertainment category isn't all that common and it can earn well.

  • @jarrod499
    @jarrod499 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Regarding the gaps in the set up, you listed travel and gas and phone protection. The WF autograph addresses all three and looks like it or the new journey card will be getting transfer partners. I do have to push back a little on the travel category gap. The VX bonus being tied to the portal is annoying, the thing is because of insurance I still think that it makes sense to put flights, and rental cars on it when booking direct even if you have a card with a better bonus. That leaves (non prepaid hotels). A gap but not as big as all travel, and if your spend is high enough that the points on all your paid travel is a big deal (or you go on expensive cruises) then you really should get the CSR not the VX. You need the higher insurance limits.

  • @jarrod499
    @jarrod499 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If I were looking for a weakness in the setup I’d say it’s in a weak mid complexity usage. On the simple end, quasi cash back is great, you get one cent per point and don’t even have to use the portal outside the credit (erase travel expenses). On the other hand the setup enables high complexity high value, through transfers to a wide array of foreign airlines . What the setup is missing is a Southwest Airlines that would let you get a 30-40% increase in value with dead simple redemptions.

  • @gainesville323
    @gainesville323 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I feel like if it wasn’t for the dependence on the C1 portal (which wasn’t too bad booking a hotel with my SavorOne) and the lack of domestic airline and valuable hotel transfer partners, the Capital One duo would be a powerhouse. Hopefully Wells Fargo doesn’t make the same mistakes with their transfer partners.

    I agree Luke! The only reason I don't ditch Chase is because I live in a market where Southwest is easy and prominent for my family. We take trips on Southwest multiple times a year - and while it's not luxurious by any stretch, it is the place I'd be spending the most if I didn't play this game. No other issuer competes with Chase for this reason. So, I've been running a dual setup. One for Southwest flights and the other for any international flights. Typically pay for hotels since I don't earn enough apart from signup bonuses. Good topic!

      @@LukesPointsandMiles I've had them for a few years multiple problems with them at a lot of different facets. Their customer service is awful and booking flights and hotels through them is a gamble.
      Chase is just a better overall company. I don't have to fight with them. If things get scewy they fix it with no questions asked.
      There's value with Capital One, but it comes with a bunch of headaches which is not the case with Chase. If you don't mind getting transferred around and having to fight with customer service agents with no resolution, then Capital One will suit you. Seriously, Capital One's motto should be "everything is a fight."

Their bucket policy means that you can be very hard to get there more desirable cards if you were a customer with them previously.

      In that case you would be purchasing the tickets and paying with points. That ticket will still earn. But a better idea is to purchase the ticket with the VX and then just use point to erase the purchase. That way you earn with the VX and with United.

I'll book through the portal and call for price match.
