CR Scan Otter - Connection Issue and Solution

  • When I hook up CR Scan Otter to my gaming laptop and use it without AC adapter, I will have issue with frame drop and stutter. What I found is, the USB-A port on the laptop is not capable of feeding the power to the scanner. My solution is to connect laptop to AC adaptor or power bank. This will give more power to USB-A port to supply the scanner.
The second solution is connecting it to more powerful port, the USB 4 or Thunderbolt. This latter method requires no AC adaptor and more convenient.

Did you try using both the factory cable with usb A port, and adding the second factory usb 2.0 (A) to usb-c power cable from the laptop to the usb-c Input port on the factory cable. It adds more power and should be a bit more secure as well. edit: corrected for clairty as well as its Meathod 2 in the manual. you can also use the power brick you show as power input with the middle "power" port on the cable.

I did try stock cable with auxiliary USB A port. It turns out that the scanner doesn't pull the power from this auxiliary port at all when I both plug into the laptop or power bank (I use watt meter to check). For the Otter, I always have to connect via USB C port, for both desktop and laptop. Otherwise, I'll have disconnection while scanner or stutter.

Can I please ask what power bank you use, and how many watts it can out put via USB c?
I purchased a power bank that outputs 100W via usb c, but it’s not enough to stop my laptop from down-clocking and having bad frame rate(15frames) and very bad stuttering.
I did try adjusting the bios to max performance when there is no AC, but it didn’t make any difference.

I use ZMI 20, the max output power is also 100W to the laptop. Maybe you can try turning off integrated graphics (MUX Switch). My laptop runs faster when Nvidia Optimus is turned off (Using discrete graphic only)

So its a power draw/supply issue. Makes sense

I think so. Because it's not an issue with Raptor that has its own separate 12V power source.
