    A few things for anyone who hasn't done suspension work before...
    1. DO NOT hit the bare tie rod stud with a hammer!!! You can very easily flare the end which will make it impossible to get the castle nut back on! Instead put the castle nut back on BACKWARDS and hit it instead.
    2. To prevent the shock from spinning when taking off the top bolt, use a 7mm open-end wrench or a set of vice-grips to hold the top of the shock while breaking the nut loose - no need for any impact tools here.

    • @raytyler2650
      @raytyler2650  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true, the stud is tapered so even if you mushroom it it’s no problem.

    I referenced this video last year for shocks and links replacement. Doing full suspension now on the same 02 Ranger and am so happy to have found this video again - hard to find for whatever reason! Thank you for the tutorial - it has helped immensely. Hope all's well!
    P.S. That top comment regarding the reverse castle nut on the tie rod is gold @R4DRmm.

    Thanks a lot for posting this video. I just watched and replicated what you did and swapped out my springs without any problems. Like you said, it really helped to use a second jack to compress the springs, especially when I discovered that the auto store loaner spring compressor doesn't have enough clearance to get around the lower control arm, so I had no choice but to follow your guidance. Worked great.

    I'm working on my 98 , got a 8.8 posi rear end at the junk yard out of a 93 ranger for 100.00 took it home and sand blasted it and got all new USA parts for it and a 5.13 gear and new leaf spring that has 6 leafs instead of the 3 leafs that come on them , then working on a all new moog front end with a 4 inch lift spindle with f150 spindle and all new 15x10 Corvette rally rims with new tires.

    Nice Job! How much would you charge to work on my 2004 Ranger? I'm in the process of converting my Ranger from a 3.0 to a 4.0 SOHC and I learned the hard way you have to remove a 2" spacer between the motor mount and the frame and the bad part about replacing the motor mounts on a Ranger with the coil spring front suspension is that you got to remove the shock and the spring to gain access to the nut holding the motor mount on. (Another brilliant design by Ford)

    • @raytyler2650
      @raytyler2650  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What exactly do you need to do? Just take the coils out so you can get in there, then re-assemble?

    • @kentuckyboi777
      @kentuckyboi777 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I already removed one spring from the doner vehicle. I compressed the spring with a spring compressor, so it didn't kick out too bad. Basically the frame that had the 3.0 has a 2" metal spacer that needs to be taken out because the 4.0 has a wider engine block. Do you think the truck with the 4.0 has heavier load spings? I actually think the 3.0 and the 4.0 weigh about the same because the 4.0 has aluminum heads. What do you think?

    • @raytyler2650
      @raytyler2650  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Smith yeah the 3.0 has cast iron heads and a cast iron block. Weighs almost as much as a 4.0 but the power of a 2.3 haha. There's 2 or 3 different coil load rates for the Ranger. Doesn't correlate to the engine size or transmission, ext-cab etc. so my Ranger came with the highest load rate and it's a 2.3 Regular cab. The lift coils are stiff as hell so no matter what engine you have and will lift it. I would say buy the Camburg or Fabtech coils and you will be just fine. You can have a 5.0 under the hood and the Fabtech coils will still lift it. Also, not sure if you watched the whole video but you don't need a spring compressor. The total length of the coils are like 15.5" and they only compress down to 13. So there isn't a "dangerous" element to removing the coils. Hope this helps.

    • @raytyler2650
      @raytyler2650  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Smith oops wrong person, haha yes I can get the coils out for ya. Should take me about 2 hours because this is second nature to me. Let me know. I live in the north OC area, Brea/La Habra

  • @smartdummy5751

    I'm struggling putting my coil on the passenger side on. I'm doing it on the curb with a 1/2" curb gutter drop so that might affect the placement of the coil to control arm since the control arm is lifted awkwardly. Might have to resort to a spring compressor.

    Very nice video raytyler26 !
    I do have a ranger too
    Trying lift it bit
    I'm thinking puttin 2 or 3 " blocks in back !
    Is it only the springs you put in your ?
    Or any thing else ?
    Can you tell me wat size ? You got
    Or link to buy parts !
    I already got the rims !
    I'm thinking Putin 31x10.5x15 !
    Thanks 😃👍🏼

    Great video.
    If that arm is jacked up enough (not too much) the pinch bolt that holds the spindle will push out by hand.
    It flew at the camera because the arm was pulling on the bolt. Too much tension can ruin the bolt.
    Nice truck 👌

    • @raytyler2650
      @raytyler2650  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotta remember this video was over 4 years ago. I’ve tinkered with it so much more since then.
      1: I don’t care if the bolt gets screwed up. I have a dozen of them laying around.
      2: the pinch bolt won’t always slip out by hand. Think of it like a pin holding a bucket on an excavator bucket. Gotta give her a little whack because they do settle down and get frozen almost 100% of the time.

      @@raytyler2650 I have the exact same coil spring setup but every time I order shocks that are supposedly ‘For Coil Spring’ they never fit. In fact, the shocks that are on my truck now are the exact same extended length as the ones that are for ‘Torsion bar spring’. I’m confused.

  • @caldwellpropertymaintenanc9252
    @caldwellpropertymaintenanc9252 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks good! its hard to find stock coils for an 04 xlt. Fabtech FTS98100-2 makes some that are supposedly 2.5" inch lift for the 4 cyl . engines, so probably stock ride height on the heavier 3.0 extended cab. Do you think i would need longer spindles in order to fit the springs under? or just use a camber bolt kit and hope for the best?

    • @raytyler2650
      @raytyler2650  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man, I wanna say the FTS98100-2 will lift all Rangers 2.5" no matter what engine size. The 4 cylinder engine only weighs 100lbs less than the 3.0.
      Just DO NOT buy the Maxtrac coils complete JUNK. Fabtech or Camburg only. My truck sank back down to basically stock because of these stupid coils. The FTS or Camburg won't do that.
      No, you don't need a new spindle or anything. You should get longer shocks but the stock ones will work.

      the top of the spindle with the ball joint of the control arm is hitting the frame (sorta) is that normal?
      i used fabtech coils and fox shocks on my 08 2WD

  • @808kea808
    @808kea808 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey I’m thinking of getting some maxrrac coils as well. Will it affect the camber a lot ? I got the 6” spindle lift. It comes with the 4” spindle lift as well as the 2” coil spacer. After installation I have very bad camber. The top of the tire is inwards. And my upper control arm ball joint is getting beaten up. The alignment shop says I’ll need to remove the spacer so they can get my tire back to how it’s suppose to be.
    So would me installing a 2” lift coil work and keep my alignment ? Thanks for responding

    so you're pushing 35 's with a 4 cyl ? If so you're going to blow your engine . Also that little engine loses half its power when you increase the overall wheel diameter . its kinda like on a mountain bike when you put it in a bigger gear it becomes harder to pedal , well your 4 banger can only push so hard before it shits the bed !!
