THE SMILE TAPES is an analog horror series about a strange drug that spreads a disease throughout the population. People that are infected tend to have a forced smile and go on a killing spree. But things get deeper when it seems like someone is controlling all of the infected and giving them commands...

It's interesting how often you realize some youtubers really overreact to the creepy stuff, becasue in comparison your reactions are always so calm and collected. Like you enjoy connecting the dots of whats going on more then just reacting to the spooky parts. Which makes your videos so much more fun to watch then other reactions, since it feels more like we're all just putting together the mystery alongside you then watching over the top screams and swearing for theatrical effect.
Over the top screaming and swearing is my natural reaction when I'm scared because I get adrenaline rushes easier than most 😂
God forbid people have different ways of expressing their fear or different tolerances of fear 🙄
While I admit that some people overreact for the funny or the views, a lot of us on the internet are just numb to this stuff by now 😭😭 if my grandma saw this type of stuff when she was my age I think she would need therapy for the rest of her life lmao
Was this an actual story
@@2000psigigNo
The smile drug reminds me of the case of the Miami zombie (an actual thing) where this guy took bath salts (a drug) and became some kid of feral monster. He even found a homeless dude and fucking gouged his eyes out. The police were called and they shot the dude who was on the drug but was shot like 5 times before he died, and he still tried attacking the police. The homeless dude actually is still alive and doing well. I think he’s at a home now and being assisted due to being completely blind
EDIT: ok so don't trust my story because apparently i got it wrong, read some of the replies i got to get better info on this. so uhhhh oops?
What’s the Miami zombie’s name?
PCP is a drug that turns people into raging monsters. I have no idea if it correlates with your story. But there are many many cases of people on PCP going on rampages, with insane delusions, attacking people due to crazy beliefs (like the person is out to get them or believing themselves to be a vampire/werewolf). When they are hit, punched, kicked, stabbed, it does not phase them. They can be shot multiple times before even falling to their knees. Scary stuff, no idea why anyone would take a chance on a drug like that.
It was NOT bath salts, the toxicology reports only indicated a very small amount of weed in the man's system. It's still unknown what caused it to happen but it was most likely an extreme mental breakdown, however false the use of bath salts in that case was used to push a wide emergency ban on the items used to make the drug. The panic caused from cases like the Miami zombie where people did horrible things and were suspected to be under the influence of bath salts was used to push forward a narrative and fear of the drug, even if none of those cases had anything to do with said drug.
Oh yeah I heard that
only at the fbi report but true
The smiles caused by the disease made me think of the Jerma sus face, as I'm sure others have said, so I like to imagine that Jerma was one of the people who caught the benign variant or was immune to it, but it still affects him in some way given his apparent insanity. Just a silly little thought I had.
This is cannon to me now
He is from a different, already infected universe, where he found a cure but had to constantly smile and because everything was destroyed, came to the nearby universe, but brought it with him, even though it was contained but considering it was in the black market, WHAT IF IT WAS STOLEN AND BEFORE THE SPREADERS THE SPORES WERE ACCTUALLY SPAT BY A MAN IN THE GANG WHICH WANT TO DESTROY EVERYTHING AND TAKE OVER!.
Not gonna lie me too
I KEPT THINKING OF JERMA THE WHOLE VID LMFAO
Pretty sure everyone who saw it before did lol
I think at the beginning, Shaun's dog was already sick, as he stated he had been very quiet lately and so was visiting the vet, perhaps the fungus was starting to make him hallucinate to make it seem as if Max was doing better, as this would obviously make him happier by the get go, and so when Max passes away unexpectedly, it was due to the fungus impairing his ability to see that Max was still not doing well, as it would make him sad to see that. The fungus was quite literally trying to block out all negatives. Which is very interesting, I'm glad I stopped by to start this series.
After Max passes away, his coworker's say Sean looks happier, but he's not.
Interesting parallel to Max seeming to feel better prior to him passing.
...did Max have the fungus?
@Your Mother is a Hamster Another thing I was thinking of was, maybe, since dog's vocal cords aren't made to laugh, barking was Max's substitute after being infected.
I just thought he unconsciously killed his dog. It was around the same period the Fungus got worse.
no one talking about the flour tho....
........I just saw the theory of the universe.
This is honestly one of the most horrifying analog horror I’ve ever seen. It’s one of my biggest nightmares to be stuck in a city with no means of escape as human-like monsters are running around laughing like demons and killing people. The sheer terror from the constant screaming, burning, laughing would create such psychological stress and i haven’t even i mentioned the spores like you cant even trust the air you’re breathing. This series is absolute terror and i love it. 10/10 in my book
I had this kind of dream
@@MyGachaStudiobro id just refuse to sleep after that if a had that dream

my theory is that the fungus infects serotonin as well, and since the immune girl was in such a state of deep depression and was barely producing serotonin, the fungus could not reach her brain. Realizing that she was not a suitable host, the spores try to exit and move on to another host. I also believe that hosts who unwillingly get infected (not taking the drug, instead being sporebombed) take longer to get infected.

15:20 fun fact, most flour is already home to bacteria and fungal spores. This is one of the reasons raw flour can make you sick, but also why adding water to raw flour and letting it sit on the counter for a couple days yeilds sourdough starter. The tiny living things we inhale all the time; bacteria, pollen, fungal spores, and more, start nomming on the flour when hydrated and a culture starts growing that produces gas as a byproduct.
The reason why fungus doesn't thrive in our bodies is because we are warm blooded- one of the perks is most fungus dies at 90 ish degrees, so our bodies are unlivable enviroments.
This is also why you should always check your baked goods with an instant read cooking thermometer. Everything that lives in flour that can make you sick dies at 200 degrees F, so once the center reaches that temp your goodies are safe from whatever was living in the flour.
If a fungus that thrived inside a host body and expelled spores able to survive indefinitely in a dry enviroment, the contanmination would be inevitable as the fungus got more prevalant / adapted to even survive the cooking process along with their warm blooded hosts- two perks for one adaptation sounds like exactly the sort of evolutionary branch point before that branch explodes in population and, inevitably, variation.
All of this is to say if the fungal infestation can survive temperatures higher than known specimins, it is completely plausable that it was just flour that was contaminated, and that the person who threw it was infected beforehand by spores that survived the cooking process or simply managed to get up their nose while mixing. Flour is... good at that XD
Thanks for the info!!
So that’s why in the Hbo tlou that caused the outbreak?

40:25 I think this was basically a summary of how he died, for all those confused. During the part where blood comes out of the photo of him you can hear the poor dude coughing, which probably means he coughed out a lot of his blood. He also seemed to have been in a struggle with the infected individual, because before the blood appears, his photo keeps on moving (that could be the filter however), and the strange sounds.
This feels like a mix between Joker toxin mixed with some Last of Us fungi infection. Im refering to the Batman Animated Series Joker Toxin which always felt darker to me as an adult. The wide unnatural grin just like this is unsettling

Just wanted to say that the man that is supposedly in "everyones" dreams or has been in people's dreams was made specifically to see how easy it is to spread misinformation on the internet.
Yeah, from what I heard, people mostly started seeing the man only after being asked if they saw him
It's not just concerning how well it spread through the internet but also outside of it

thing is it's probably a common plague for their world like a cold in our's its just that that 1 would be invasive here without the things that keep it's population low and like neutral protection
One thing I noticed while Sarah was being interviewed was she said that someone close to her had either died or had been killed with the doctor even giving his condolences. I wasn’t able to make out who but her trying to cope with that loss is her given reason for not following standard safety protocol. She’s also stated as being the only person to contract the B variant of the infection, with her stating that she’s lost all desire to smile. That and she’s the only person in the series that we know is infected who had suffered great tragedy before getting infected. So, maybe this means that those who’ve suffered, who’ve experienced sorrow, and possibly those with depression are the ones that, if infected by the spores, would contract the B variant as, they probably wouldn’t be able to smile under the circumstances they were put through.
Analog horror never fails to tickle my pickle 🥰🥰
I have a theory about the girl who’s “immune”. She isn’t immune. It’s like Left 4 Dead how in the first game they thought they were immune but then they realized they carried the disease and everyone around them turns into zombies. That’s what’s happening to her. She’s coughing up spores and stuff. She’s doing ok but I think that’s the next stage. No deformities. Just it getting worse…and worse…and worse…

I think the reason for being scared when someone is smiling with the intent of murder is the fact that it seems like they’re getting joy from it
I think it's also juxtapositional, which makes it fall in the uncanny valley. It's the same reason distorting nostalgia works so well in the horror genre, which is taking something associated with joy or good feelings and putting it in a harmful, threatening or otherwise frightening context. It's just wrong.
@@mixedbagmixesmusic1967 technically nostalgia is associated with sadness

These distorted, inhuman smiles are so damn effective (at least in my opinion, they really make my skin crawl). The creator of those images really tapped into uncanny terror in its purest form, twisting the very familiar image of a human face to make it unfamiliar and unnerving.

@@fordakacar true, but imagine walking in the street and just seeing someone with such a contorted smile. its indeed a chliche in analog horror but if i saw someone doing that i'd definetly shit myself in fear
That's all it is in the images. The sus jerma face edited over a persons face in black and white.
plus the skin tightens and slowly rips appart every time the smile grows larger and more Distorted
I think Max could have also have had the disease cuz he seemed to be doing better, which I think could either be the effects that were seen on Sean, maybe Sean was hallucinating that Max was doing better, or the disease made Max seem to do better, but eventually had him succumb to it during stage 2.
I think so too. It wouldn't make sense for the shroom to not want to use animals, but I think animals just aren't hardy enough to survive, so they die in early stage 2, when mania sets in, but before violent tendencies begin to occur.

Agreed. He also looks like a relatively small dog in the pictures, so it makes sense the same dose from the flour would be fatal to Max first. I think he only seemed better bc of the disease. I think a large part of why some people find the warped face amusing is because they have a larger degree of separation, those who find it terrifying largely view it in a more "what if I met this in real life" whereas those who find it funny tend to find it more "its in a movie and looks kinda goofy since its fake"
For me these faces just look fake while I find the Mandela Catalogue alternates terrifying.
What makes them goofy in my opinion is how large they seem to look and, while the placement of the cheekbones when "smiling" is realistic, it looks kinda funny when the mouth is impossibly contorted.

Yep, he said Max seemed more energic and is barking again. Which could be what the manic laughter would present as for dogs? honestly my first thought about those "alien lights" at the end of vol. 3 was that it wasnt aliens, but nukes. since the virus became such a threat, i feel like the government decided to just take out the whole city with it, although i must say, the way that the lights like symetrically dispersed is very weird

A lot of people in a lot of fan bases are toxic af and it is obvious when almost every creator ends up getting burnt out and quitting what obviously started as a heavily planned out passion project. This stuff takes time and isn’t up to the fans or haters to decide their direction in art or story so people need to eat a damn snickers bar and just give the creators space and time to work on things. In my opinion, I would rather have cliff hangers and be pleasantly surprised by updates after long periods of time because then I get to be excited and intrigued all over again and it gives me a chance to look at puzzles given before with a fresh perspective.
Toxicity is one thing, and it probably played a role, but I wouod not call people calling out the use of popular topics/outdated copypastas are toxic. Constructive criticism is necessary, and seeimg these things can really break tbe immersion that these worlds need to keep running.

Here's my theory on who "The man" is, and also something about how the infection works.
So we know that the fungus is from space, and is seemingly very advanced as it can take control of one's mind. I mean, it's not that unusual for fungus, remember, cordyceps. And we also know that the fungus, like all beings, simply wants to reproduce and find the best way to do this. The victims seemingly rotting means that the fungus probably just wants dead tissue to eat like a lot of fungus do, so hence it makes people kill. It doesn't matter if the host is alive.
So, why the smiling? Why the man?
The fungus, having the ability to "read" one's mind has found itself in humans and realized we're no ordinary animal. We don't seem to live purely out of instinct. We live to be happy. In fact, we want to be happy.
Notice how when the guy in the cabin took the drug, it seemed at first like a very strong but kinda regular shroom trip. I think it was the fungus interacting with the brain, stimulating it to see how it is best going to control the human. It knew the human wants to be happy so it triggered those parts of the brain, just like psilocybin in shrooms. However, upon further "scanning" of the brain, the fungus learned how the human can better interpret happiness. The human can only interpret so much from pretty colours and happiness chemicals. The matter more important to the fungus is how the human can be commanded via this happiness.
It conjured an image of a person smiling, something our human brains interpret as a loving image, someone relaxed, someone trustworthy. And then it commands the person directly. Go make others happy. We humans like when others are happy too. And they simply do not know this happiness enough so you must go make them see it, feel it.
Some, while still half sane were commanded to simply spread the fungus via flour, because the fungus can live in the flour (that's probably how the drug was distributed in the first place) these could be the more resilient individuals who could survive with cognitive abilities for longer. Some, if not most would simply be subdued to the point where the fungus is in full control, and simply wants dead flesh around it to be able to finally feed, as it's starting to lack nutrients in it's host. Assuming that the fungus can make growths of it's own the type c cases could be people like body builders and anyone who enjoys working out. The fungus recognizes that the person gets a lot of it's happiness from physical excercise. The fungus then uses this opportunity to make the host fueled by it's happiness, forgetting all pain, using all muscle power it has (which could happen, humans can be incredibly strong if we push our muscles past their limits). The fungus also makes sure that such potentially useful individuals are protected and resistant to their own muscles bursting by making growths of it's own around all of the host's tissue. I could imagine thick fungal growth behave somewhat like kevlar at stopping bullets.
Edit: as i was thinking, this theory makes more and more sense. I can see why the fungus would make you smile very much by force, instead of letting you smile yourself. Because it recognizes smiling is a social behavior for us, so in order to make the host seem more attractive to other humans, it makes the host itself smile. Just like the conjured image of "The man" inside people's heads is a way to trick a human.
Edit 2: it also seems to make sense why "The man" is the guy that a lot of people see in their dreams. When the fungus scanned the brain, it saw that a lot of us have this one person in our subconscious minds for some reason. Perfect for the job his face needs to do, because it isn't any of the people you've ever met in life. The fungus doesn't want to risk you seeing for example your mother or best friend, because although more trustworthy they might trigger a strong enough memory for you to feel a different emotion. For the fungus it would basically be like constantly having annoying glitches in a computer's system. The fungus is very proficient in what it does.
Damn i feel like Roanoke gaming here.

Bruh this comment is so underatted

@@randomasian5049edit: still a bit long but this is the best i could do lol
the fungus just wants to spread, and it eats dead tissue. However it's very capable in meddling with the mind. It found out people will do a lot just to be happy.
So it makes you happy by giving you a trip, and conjures an image of a happy man, because it's easier for you to be commanded by someone you trust. We see someone who's smiling and happy as someone more trustworthy than pretty colours and cryptic feelings of a trip.
It then makes you go kill people so that the fungus has more dead flesh to eat. If your mind is resilient enough you might want to first spread it via literally throwing the fungus infected flour into people or other means. If you like to excercise and build your muscles, the fungus will make you use like 200% of their normal power and shield you with it's own growth around you (type c).
@@randomasian5049 real
@@randomasian5049 advanced space fungus figures out humans can experience more complex emotion compared to animals, also that people like to smile, so the fungus attempts to recreate smiling to communicate that the fungus is "totally" safe
also the fungus makes people forget pain and make them use their muscles to full capacity
also since the fungus studied the human brain, it found out about the dream man person and i suppose it's taken that as its avatar

Something about this always freaked me out. The uncanny nature of freakishly large smiles has always unnerved me. Hence why i love this analog horror series for some reason.
The fact that we can't stop laughing at the patients' face because of Jerma implies that we ourselves are infected and we just don't know it yet because the symptoms are almost non-existent aside from laughter.
I know this video is 4 months old but I just wanted to point out something, the man that “A lot of people see in their dreams” was a test by a psychologist, basically they told a bunch of people that a lot of people see him in their dreams to see if they would lie and say they saw him too, and it worked.

37:50 When you hear screaming like that out in the wilderness, it's usually mountain lions. It's a mating call, I believe. 7:42 I couldn’t help but think of the zombie ant fungus when this part came up. In case anyone doesn’t know what that is it is a common fungus that is found in ants. When I ant come across the spores of this fungus the fungus will immediately infect in individual and begin taking control of its body. Once this happen the ant will end up crawling onto a high spot where it would die as the fungus grows out of its body, spores in then release to later infect more members of the ants colony. Thinking of that in human terms is horrific.

He wasn't actually seen in anyone's dreams, the man was created by a guerilla marketing campaign by a dude Andrea Natella who was advertising for some art agency and created a very generic looking face that people thought looked kinda familiar due to either misremembering dreams or simply how generic the man is.

“There is no cure” there is because when the girls father died she was sad and the fungus mutated/ got cured because the opposite of happiness is sadness or that’s what I’m thinking anyway 😅
