  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 Ram 2500 6.4L HEMI Heavy Duty pickup truck is incredible capable towing tool but just how well does this gasoline HEMI powered truck pull when loaded to the max at two miles above sea level? That's the core of TFL's grueling Ike Gauntlet torture towing test and that's the mountain that the 2014 Ram 2500 has to scale in this latest Ike Gauntlet video.
    How did the big Ram do when compared to the Chevy we tested earlier this year?
    The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado.

    The Chevy 6.0 has always been a strong running motor, even at elevation and I am talking about the first gen Silverado HD circa 2000. I was driving US 50 between Salida and Monarch Pass and was impressed with how well one was dragging a 5th wheel camper up and down the hills. Mind you, this had a 4 speed auto.

    Hey guys, I enjoy your test. I have driven about all the big boys in gas and diesel. To give my experience with the test of gas engines, my GM 6.2L 1500 was a good truck that drove nice and rode comfortably, but it did not manage heavier weight very well with mods and add ons. I moved to a F350 6.2L gas, but it did not pull well for me, and rode terible. I found a 2015 Ram Longhorn 6.4L 3500 that I still drive today. I pull a toyhauler tipping out at 11-11.5K lbs. The family loves riding in it. I love driving it empty or pulling. The Ram pulls uphill just fine, not as good as a diesel, but the best gas engine I have had. Mileage is better than the GM 1500, and much better than the F350.

    Ram designed the truck to not exceed 4200 rpm under high pressure to increase the longevity and fuel economy of the truck. This was said by Ram. They would rather you have a slow truck that lasts, than one that pushes the motor unnecessarily. You're still getting to where you want to go. It'll just cost you less in the long run.

    • @406Steven
      @406Steven 9 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Indeed. The other trucks will run right on the red line all the way up the hill, but do this day after day and they'll throw a rod through the block (saw a Tundra do this trying to pull too much weight uphill). Better to play it safe and slow down a bit. You'll lose some bragging rights at first but when your engine keeps on running when the others are blown to bits you'll get the last laugh.

      UnsulliedSpy .... I tow with my 2012 Chevy 4.8l gasser, I tow 7k lbs every weekend up a long steep grade and I run it hard near redline and it’s never had an issue. It’s got 190k on it now and The last thing I’m worried about is it “blowing up”. These engines are designed and tested to run long periods at high rpms. Part of owing and towing with a gasser is learning not to fear the redline. Just run the heck out of them. And enjoy saying 10k otherwise fork out the money and get a diesel.

    I'd like to see how the 90s trucks big block gas engines do on the ike gauntlet vs these new trucks. It would be a fun test of time. Chevy 2500 454 vs F250 460 vs ram 2500 488 V10 (dodge didn't have a big V8 at the time). All in perfect working order, not as hard to find as one may think.
    Off the line towing honestly will probably be better in the bigger engines but might not be as fast due to less peak horsepower and an obvious downfall in MPG due to engine mass.
    I'd really love to see it.

      If you tow everyday but not tow super heavy loads yes I suggest getting the 6.4 Hemi. That's my daily driver, I drive like 4-5 miles to work so my fuel consumption is 10-11MPG, BUT I've seen it do good when driving long distances, it loves to stay in the 1,600RPM range too. But with what you tow you should be good with the 6.4

      Paulo Abesamis I bought a 2017 heavy duty 4x4 with the 6.4 Hemi in it about a month ago. I think something may be not working right on it. I went camping last weekend and it only averaged 9 mpg at about 65 mph!!!! I was towing a 30 ft RV that weighs in at about 8k lbs. And in town I only get about 11. I figured I wouldn't get great gas milage but this thing is a hog!!!! I thought maybe I would get somewhere around 14/17 but not even close! It also sounds like the front end is gonna fall out when I put it in 4 wheel drive. The shifting is terrible. I traded in a 2015 Ram Laramie that got 27 mpg on the highway but to be fair it was the 6 cylinder engine. Just needed a bigger truck but couldn't afford the deisel.

    I used to be a Chevy person, but since I bought my 05 Dodge Ram, I'll never go back. One of the major things that bother me about Chevy trucks is their interior fit and finish and how things just start falling apart or annoying rattles driving you crazy. My boss had a newer model Chevy long bed and we would use it to transport items to a tradeshow in Vegas and the regular driver pointed out about 10 things on the interior that just seemed to detach themselves, it was hilarious to see so many loose connections that simply pointed to poor materials or inadequate attention during assembly. That alone was enough for me to not to even think about buying Chevy when I'm ready to upgrade. I've had older Chevys in the past as well, one stands out as the biggest POS was my 78 Suburban. Anything and everything failed on that truck and I dumped a lot of money into it before finally waking up and cheap selling it. On the other hand, no one squeak or rattle from the Ram truck in 135K miles. I had one issue and that had to do with a sheared exhaust manifold bolt, otherwise problem free mechanically, in this context I've been impressed with the quality of how the interior components fit tight and don't fall apart.
    In regards to the video, I can do without the guy in the passenger seat overtalking his partner and trying to be the entertainer, I want the cold hard facts and less drama. But, I have heard of issues here and there regarding the 6.4, most of which dealt with poor fuel economy. Like many have said here, the test results just seemed to contradict the capability of what this truck brings to the table on paper, it's as though something was wrong somewhere in the mechanics or software, I hope some official from Mopar was watching because this makes the truck DOA in the mind's of many prospective buyers. If it were me considering a truck that required to pull loads like the test vehicle, I wouldn't even consider the 6.4 or any gas motor for that matter, this test and conditions screams diesel all the way.

    I think what happened and I could be wrong was when Kent manually changed the gears on the shift lever it stays in manual mode where the user must do all the shifting. You have to press and hold the gear up button to shut it off and turn it back into automatic mode. That is why you could see the number six the whole time next to the D symbol. It only shows the gear number in manual mode. Just a thought

      I happen to own a '14 Ram 3500 and can tell you that just because it's showing 6 doesn't mean it won't shift on it's own. If you set it to 6, it just means 6 gear is the highest it will go. Set it to 4, 4th is the limited gear. It will go to 3, 2, 1 and all the way back to 4, if need be... It showing 6 isn't the problem....

It's a 6 speed tranny so it was allowed it's full automatic range. The only reason he set that is it gives the gear display on the dash so they new what gear that tranny was pulling in.

    I can answer the question, no it did not go into REP mode, but I'd be willing to bet it hit cat overtemp. PE (power enrichment) is designed to keep the engine from knocking and keep cylinder temps down when your under ALOT of load. The computer takes a good guess at the catalytic converter temp, what I bet happened is as soon as it went over the limit it started pulling timing so i could slack up on the fueling, the more unburnt fuel the hotter the cat...which is bad. What killed the power is the timing..you could almost watch it pull timing starting about 4 minutes into the run and it became progressively worse, even the engine tone changed.

    • @blackopsrocks
      @blackopsrocks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cage9 not really, Ford chose not to release an update for the ECM because of possible emissions equipment damage. They did investigate it, concluded the algorithm that guesses how hot the cat is tends to be pretty accurate. If the cat was larger maybe? All turbocharged gas engines have a pretty serious PE (fuel enrichment) to protect the engine, and this causes extra stress on the converters in turn. The solution is a naturally aspirated or diesel if you subject the truck to this kind of load consistently. IF its occasional, then its operating how its supposed to.

    my observation from this video is that if they wouldn't have messed with the manual gear on the shift there would have been significant results he tried to cycle the screen from the gear shaft where you cycle from the steering wheel controls and I speak from experience that when I tow on my RAM 1500 I like to rest my hand on the gear shaft and sometimes it goes into manual mode and that will play a significant role when your transmission cant go either up or down in gear due to our fingers. that's my two cents

    as far as the 6.4 liter gas v8 engine goes I wouldnt go shaming it just yet. There could be a big possibility that that requirement for premium gas could have had a major effect on its time. if you go to any dealer they all say premium unleaded for those engines but i never heard if they made sure it was that or not. I did not even notice this til this morning and i have been scanning this for a while

      mohammadkwt There isn't much of an update for the 2015 superduties. The powerstroke gets a larger a turbo and a few other tweaks, but that's it. Since these are all gas trucks, a 2012 is no different from a 2014 or 2015.

    I don't know what the recommended tire pressure is on this truck (front/back), and guessing these are D-rated since this is a HEMI and not a Cummins. I did notice at the 5:00 mark, the front tire's PSI are 63 and 65 respectively, and the rear PSI at 72 and 73. I do know the tires have a max psi of 80, and typically the fronts are aired down a little less than the rears, but is 63 and 65 too low with this kind of load? Would 70 up front and 75 in the rear have provided less rolling resistance and better results? I know a few PSI can make a huge difference ..... curious.

    What are the transmission ratios ...and gear spacing vs the Chevy ...rear end gears are not the only gearing that determines how a rig pulls the first set of gears are i the trans and even Torque converter can be different ...point is the motor may have more power but the gearing may not allow it shine in the hills ,but it may do much better on flats and bumps ,which really you only see passses like this on a few trips and they only last a short few miles ...The pain of driving a Chevy ...Runs Deep ...

      Shawn Hudson This was a tuning issue with the 6.4, Ram fixed this with a ECM update last fall. These 6.4's will out pull an 6.0, that's for sure. The 6.0 is more like the 5.7 Hemi, love to scream to make power, the 6.4 (when not in limp mode like you see here) makes a good bit more down low.

    • @anman424
      @anman424 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this an update in a newer model year or can you take it in to get updated? Also calling it "limp mode" gives limp mode too much credit. I would call it reduced power mode. True limp mode never gets over 2k rpm and 15 mph or so.

      @@bryanmartinez6600 5.4L's were always decent low end torque engines, but they traded having low end torque for high end horsepower, as a Ford man it pains me to say this, but they usually couldn't win race's against 5.3L Chevy's but they could certainly out tow them.

    I own a 6.4 Hemi truck with 20s and 35s, all I’ve done was put a magnaflow muffler on and a s&b cold air and mine has amazing power especially down low. I will say mine seemed to gain quite a bit after the cold air intake in higher rpms almost like the factory intake was suffocating the engine at higher rpms. But it still had more ass from factory than any gas truck 3/4 ton I’ve driven including 6.0 and ford 6.2. In the end though opinions are like a**holes...everyone has one.

      I test drove a 2018 Ram 2500 6.4L 4.10, 2018 F250 6.2L 3.73/4.30 and the 2018 Silverado 2500 6.0L 4.10. The F250 was, by far, the most sluggish on 3.73's. No one should buy that truck with that gear ratio. You pretty much have to get the 4.30 gears and then plan to immediately plus up 2 sizes on the tires, as the 4.30's are too geary on stock tires. So stupid. The Ram and the Chevy were about the same, and I could not notice any significant engine performance difference between them during the unloaded test drive. Chevy had a little better throttle response, as they always do. But the Ram had the same overall get up and go. Unloaded they are a tie. However, this video blows my mind. I would totally have put my money on the Ram at max or near max loading.
