    Wow, I just bought a used 2021 version of your truck. I plan on towing our 7,000 lb travel trailer with it starting this summer. I had been pulling the TT with a Yukon Denali. Talk about pushing the limits. Lucky for us we did not go very far. I have been told to be very careful pulling the trailer with the 2500. Problem is, you won't know the trailer is behind you,, so I have to watch my speed. A problem I look forward to having. Great video. I'm glad to see someone who likes the Ram 2500

    Thanks for your detail!! Very insightful. I picked up my ‘24 Tradesman 2500 gasser yesterday. I was intrigued by your manual shift transfer case comment (like maybe it’s electric shift with a lever through the floor which I’ve seen before on a Chevy). Well I got under the truck and mine is actually a manual shift tcase. The actuation that you wait to happen I believe is the front axle disconnect.

    OMG! You had me curious because I have a 2021 ram with the big hemi with a little different build than yours but I went back and looked at my window sticker from when I bought it in 2021 and it was $48,600 then I built a 2023 with the exact same truck and it was almost $60,500 for the same truck! all I can say is elections and policies have a huge impact on the economy, and the way incompetent politicians destroyed the world economy is criminal.

    Great video!! I have a 2021, 2500 6.4 Hemi and for the most part I really like it. It does eat some gas, but i knew that when I bought it. I use it mainly for pulling a trailer just like you have in the back ground, so I have a little bit of overkill going on. I was also thinking when I bought it that we may go up to a larger trailer so that option would be open. I had a 2008 Ram that I traded in, so I pretty much doubled my towing capacity. Thanks from a Kansas boy with family in the farming business.

      Hey from a fellow Kansan! I am looking to upgrade as my father is offering to let us use his 11k pound camper. If you don't mind me asking, what were the specs on your 2008? Curious what made it a big jump in towing capacity because I really like the 3rd gens, been looking at MegaCab Cummins. I've been reading a lot on the 6.4's since they've come out, especially because my dad pulls the camper with a 6.0L GMC gasser. I will give GM credit that they did a great job mating the engine and transmission with that 6.0 but I simply enjoy the Ram trucks more.

    First time viewer and subscriber. Let me say a big Thank You, Sir for this vid. That's a great review of that truck.
    I just picked up a 2023 Tradesman 6.4 yesterday. I certainly learned some things and appreciate what's been shown in the video and in the comments section, especially regarding the MDS....I had no idea that feature existed on the 6.4. I, too, immediately noticed the difference in the steering and ride compared to my 1500. This 2500 feels more like what trucks used to be like...LOL...it's gonna take some getting used to. Again, thanks!!!

      Hey Larry
      Thank You. I have 22k on it now. I towed 2 tractors back from Michigan with it this summer and it rode like nothing behind it. I’m in the middle of a tough spot now as my 2015 1500 Ram with 198k on it is down because I broke an easy out in the head repairing the infamous hemi exhaust manifold leaks.

      @@Jtwes As an old (emphasis on the old) Mopar guy, let me say: been there/done that!! In one instance, there was enough meat left on it to be able to tack-weld a nut to it and got it out. In another instance, I had to pull the head, took got it to the machine shop where we were fortunate enough to drill it out. On another one I had, it was to no avail: nothing worked. It just wasn't meant to be...ended up junking it. Went to the scrapyard, found/bought a decent head, had it checked for cracks, rebuilt it and put it back back together. All of that work was on the older engines (340s/360s/440s). I've personally not had to deal with that issue with these newer engines, but I've heard/read many of the horror stories. I suspect it is just as much of a pain in the butt as the older ones if not worse. Oh, when you're trying to get em out, I learned ya gotta hold your mouth just right..🙂. Stay safe, stay blessed.

    I went from a 2007 gas megacab with 300,000 + miles to a 2021 tradesman crew 2500 with 5th prep along with tow technology and snow prep. Didn't know if I would like the tow technology but when plowing I can turn on the front camera to see the edges of the plow to the yard maker stakes lol . My averaging gas mileage is 14 to 17 mpg 14 in the winter and summer at 17 running highway. 373 gears.
    My truck has 3195 payload 14,200 towing. The 373 gears lower the towing. I like this truck more after changing the tires out to nitto's those Firestone tires felt like they rolling off the rim with are rv trailer on when a semi pass us. 34000 miles sofar no problems and enjoying everyday.
    Like your video good job .

    The sound you hear going in to 4 wheel drive is the front axle disconnect solenoid. My 05 ram spun the front axle all the time. They really needed to add that disconnect as it gives you better mileage and doesn't wear out the parts in just normal driving.
    You are correct about the MDS. Don't use it. It will destroy your lifters.
    I traded my 05 Cummins for a 2020 6.4 hemi with the 4:10 rear. It towed better than the old Cummins! But I wanted a shorter bed with a crew cab and broke out my rear window with the 5ver. Rams bed is only 6'4" on the short bed 2500. The ride was excellent tho with the coil springs in the rear. Having to use that special 0w-40 oil is one of the reasons I sold it and the bed length and tiny fuel tank. Only got 5 towing and had like a 180 mile range. Horrible.
    So I traded for a crew long bed Cummins in 21 and got the 50 gallon tank but I got the 3500. Bad mistake! Rode like a tank, incredibly rough and with diesel prices and def and all the emissions junk I sold it and now I just got a GMC HD 2500 6.6 gas. So far I'm loving it. Almost a 7 foot bed, I can make a uturn with the 5ver. 36 gallon tank standard is great, no MDS, rides amazing with the independent front end. I like the ram 8 speed better but do far this 6 speed is fine. I didn't want the 10 speed because it's just going to fail like the Fords.
    I think you got a great truck. Be sure you grease the ujoints on the driveshafts.
    Thanks for the video.

    Hi Jerry, I came out of a 2020 Ram with the Cummins that I had lots of Government Enforced Emission problems with, it was a nightmare. I only had 34000 miles on it when I traded for a 2022 Ram 6.4 Big Horn and I tow a 30 foot 8000 pound trailer with quite a bit and I like it I have had it a year now with No Issues at all and I have been from Oklahoma to Washington State with through lots of mountain's and it will pull OK. The Diesel was in the Dealership 4 months the last year I owned it and still wasn't fixed Dang! I love the 2022 because it doesn't have a LIMP MODE Lol. the gasser is way cheaper to operate overall. In 2021 I bought a 2022 RAM 2500 Laramie 4x4 Hemi from dealer inventory so it was immediately available. We did have a bed-length running board due to the 4x4 increasing the ground clearance. It is my daily driver. No towing and no hauling. The only thing I would do differently would be the 8 foot bed in order to install a larger fuel tank. The 31 gallon tank will allow about 2 hours of driving on a road trip.

I do have two Chevys a Colorado V6 2018 with 41842 on it and a 2011 1500 with 8200 on it. They both good truck but 2011 get around 15 to 16.5 mpg on and the Colorado gets around 25 or better on opening road so that been said I drive the Colorado more for sure.

    Thanks for a great video! I have a 2020 Ram 2500 Hemi, 4:10 posi. I spec'ed mine too. I hate the transmission dial, and those Firestone transforce tires were garbage in my opinion.
    I put a set of traction bars on my truck. Reason being these coil spring rear suspension rams have severe axle wrap. Does it matter if you're pushing snow, or lightly spin the tires on gravel or dirt roads that back and hops something fierce.
    I love the truck, it's a workhorse, it's comfortable and the 6.4 is a really good motor, it's got a forged bottom end from the factory, it's got oil squirters hitting the bottom of the Pistons, it's a heavy nickel block and they are built work.
    Good luck with your new truck.

    I sold cars and trucks and was a Tech as well. The sound you hear when you put it in 4wd is the locking axle coming in to play. The steering being different is the straight axle vs the independant front axle...The old farmers around here used to say...''yeah, buy one of them big straight axle trucks and ''wonder'' on down the road! I have almost the same truck as you, and I had to get used to that steering as well. Wish I had your 8speed though, better on fuel than this 6 speed! I have 135k on my 2014 now and I might go ahead and put the Melling 10452HV oil pump in it to ward off the lifter failure that gets some of the Hemi's. Love the truck though, I have worked it HARD , and never a problem so far. I am a stickler for maintenance and that has probably saved alot of heartache!

    Evening Joey. You know I have become a Farmall lover, but I’ve been a gear head all my life. You did your research and chose wisely. Excellent review. My old 3/4 6 liter gets similar mileage but I’ve never grossed over 16k as the equipment trailer is only rated to 7,700#, my race trailer was 10,000#. I generally run in 3rd (2001 truck) when towing as I don’t like the frequent shifts in OD. The engine stays in its torque range and the converter is not locking/unlocking very often. Doing that keeps the transmission temp down , plus the throttle angle is often reduced as well. I don’t follow Ram, but do you get trans and engine oil temps with your tow package? Again, an excellent presentation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @Jtwes
      @Jtwes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a very good question that I ment to cover. It does have a temp gauge and it runs around 167 wether I’m towing or not. The Red 1500 will run 140 and goes to 170 towing.

Hit the minus and it’s going to read 1/1 that means your in first and the highest gear it will go is first. So after you hit the minus button and see the 1/1 hit the plus button and your see 1/2 keep hitting plus and you’ll go all the way to 1/8 now your ready to go . I think those factory tires don't get as much wear out of them as if you bought aftermarket. I did get some good wera out of some Goodyear Wrangler kevlar AT tires lasted 50k on that ram. The Colorado I had had Firestone AT tires and they lasted 50k. The F150 I have the factory ones wore out at like 30-35k. And every truck I have driven wears the rears out, not spinning the tires. It's just the drive/traction that wears them out..nature of the beast. That F150 wears the centers out and I run the factory recommend or slightly under the recommended air pressure to try to make them wear flat across. No success.
    I get the same weirdness out of that 10 speed ford. If you get in it, it will mis gears or gear hunt sometimes. Others it's jerky and bumps in gear as your trying to come to a slight stop in the driveway as your just ideling around.

    absolutely correct the tires are not the same from factory and those firestones are horrid......Michelin primacy or defender LTX are awesome tires, had them on a GM truck and was super impressed......changing the oil more frequently doesnt hurt much but can help alot
    I bought a 2500 because of the payload, it actually feels like solid truck, and because these V8s are proably the last reliable motors available currently.....
    I have the digital variable assist on my HD and the steering is incredible for HD truck, I had the standard steering a few years ago and it was heavy and vague...its a big heavy truck built for a purpose so i get it

    Mds system pumps more oil onto the camshaft. "Fixing" it to stay off promotes a scenario of cam/ lifter failure, especially if you idle a lot (more than 2 minutes at a time).

    • @DominicWayda

      @@Jtwes There's another Mopar channel on here where the guy rebuilds a lot of Chrysler stuff, but long story short, the MDS lifters are "actuated" by increased oil pressure hitting the lifter bores on those MDS cylinders. More oil pressure going into the bore means more oil falling out of them and splash lubricating the cam from above. Guy also recommends that the best thing to help stop cam/lifter failures is to install a hellcat motor's oil pump (yes, it fits, it's the same block) or an aftermarket equivalent to the hellcat pump. The increased rotor size will bump pressure at idle and most of the range by 5-10psi, getting you enough lubrication at idle or if you prefer to run with the system disabled. Just my opinion though, love to learn if there are other opinions out there.

    • @Jtwes
      @Jtwes  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hey Dominic I don't doubt that wouldn't help. I do believe that 5k oil change intervals will help also. Just incase I did opt for Mopar Added care Plus for 7 yr 125k extended warranty.

      @DominicWayda I didn't think MDS system was activated during idle? 🤔. I will have to check my '21 next time I'm in it .

    • @DominicWayda
      @DominicWayda 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@billbillinger2491 It shouldn't come on during idle, though I guess theoretically they could do it. My main point with idling is that the oil volume put out by the oil pump is insufficient to fully lubricate the cam & lifters at idle. 0W-40, in addition, will maintain the same viscosity when it's cold or hot... So basically you can't really idle the truck for very long, hot or cold, before you start to cause problems to the cam & lifters. The solution is to install the higher volume hellcat pumps to remedy this... But the question I have, is whether it's worth it to buy this truck/motor knowing you can't idle until you tear down the front cover to install a new oil pump... 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

    My Transforce tires didn't last crap!!! I called Firestone and got them prorated Luckly because they are not a mileage warranty tire. I bought Bridgestone's but they are a 55,000 warranty and I'll be getting around 25,000 out of them. mostly high way miles at that!!!. I order my 2021 Ram 2500 Big Horn too 4 months to get in. I don't like diesel engines but I keep hearing about the Hemi tick. I got a 8yr/125,000 warranty.
