    I just love how BlackBerry sticks to their roots yet realizes where phones are in 2017 and manages to keep up.

      This was a VERY nice bit of evolution on BB's part.

    • @NeXMaX
      @NeXMaX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think this is where BB is most comfortable at. Mixing it what made them famous with their target audience while mixing in modern twists. I would actually not mind using a KEYone as a daily at all. I type a lot on my phone, so having a physical keyboard would be great. Add in the insane endurance and a camera that's actually really solid and I think the KEYone is a winner.
      Will it sell in huge numbers? Well, at this point, I don't think so. Then again, the point of this phone probably isn't to sell in massive numbers. It's kind of like a device meant to appeal to a specific audience and one that's also meant to say "Hey, remember us? Yeah, we're sorta back and we'd like you to give us another chance".

      How so? This phone is made by TCL, although BB definitely had a hand in designing it. All indications show that BB Corporate is interested in "boring" but lucrative areas like enterprise security and autonomous driving software

  • @ColinsCity

    Actually, i slide out the keyboard on the Priv all the time, it was the main feature of me buying the phone. I'm not a technology freak so the Priv does everything i want a phone to do, if i want HD sound i play physical formats in good speakers. People need to remember that phones are phones, they can do a lot but not everything, even iPhones can't do it. Also that reviewers gripe about getting a screen cover for curved display, i hope you share that animosity for the Samsung phones too? it's so easy to get a Glass screen protector for the Priv, i bought one on eBay and it came in a carbon fiber box with alcohol wipes to clean the screen and i installed the screen protector in a minute and it hasn't interfered with the performance of the device. I know it's still cool to hate the Priv, but if you get a Priv that actually works good then you wont hate it.

      I'd really love your thoughts and comments on my video because I touch on the topics of the priv and the concept of a physical keyboard. As an owner of that phone, either presently or previously, I'd really appreciate your views and thoughts! Video is on my channel and it's called "An Unusual Phone in Modern Times"

  • @headturnfactor3456
    @headturnfactor3456 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Great comparison. Can't agree about the design criticism though. The Priv's slider is not a way to tuck away the keyboard. It's meant to provide a way to cram both the keyboard and a competitively sized display into the phone without making it monstrous, and BB did that very well. It's a shame that the 808 was such a bad processor, but I'm willing to adjust to it (battery saver mode shutting down the two big cores helps) so I can live with such a beautiful phone, enjoy amoled and OIS and have the keyboard at the same time.

    • @C0C0_Nuts
      @C0C0_Nuts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HeadTurnFactor Yep. And to answer his question, I've used the physical keyboard for 99% of typing per my Priv's input stats. The slider is super easy to use, just as quick to access as on-screen keyboards that take a split second to pop up on many phones.

      @abrahamlee663 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, its because the clock speed of the processor is slower than a flagship phone and the screen size is much smaller. Pair that with a battery that is 3505 MaH (most flagships are at 3000 MaH), you get sub two day battery life. Can't wait to get one when it comes out in the US.

  • @Llethander
    @Llethander 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The irony for me here is the fact that I love the Priv's slider design. I feel that if the battery and processor had been better the Priv would have been a much stronger phone.
    I've been looking at other devices recently but I just can't give up the physical keyboard and the ability to hide it away for when I want that full sized screen. I've really come to love the feature.
    Additionally, with a little playing around with Tasker the fact that I can not only slide open to answer a call and have a phone that feels more natural - something about the added length for me - but also close the phone to hang up leaves me with a phone that I really don't want to get rid of.
    Really my only complaints with the Priv have been responsiveness (processor), heat generation depending on application (it can sometimes get really damn hot), and the battery life (I always get a full day out of it but that's because I typically have Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS off when not at home as well as the backlight as dim as possible unless outdoors.)

  • @Mattfghdghd
    @Mattfghdghd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I personally don't have any flex in the back cover of my Priv. I think those who do, don't have wireless charging because the pad is not there. I think if the Priv launched with the Snapdragon 820 or even the Snapdragon 801 (a year earlier) people would have praised it a lot more and its just a shame Blackberry picked the wrong year. I still LOVE using the KEYBOARD and without a doubt my next device will have one. The feeling of keys in the hand its awesome and i just cant do glass typing. This is one of the reasons i loved the Priv so much. We don't have to 'sacrifice' any screen space for the keyboard.
    Hopefully i can pick up a KEYone in the future. Looks like a superb device. Thanks for the review as always. Keep up the great work :D

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

    In spite of your good analysis I still love my Priv. It's touch screen keyboard is the best and the color depth of the screen is fabulous. I really only use the physical keyboard for the shortcuts and scrolling the screen. Blackberry did numerous software updates which improved performance and got the camera on a competitive basis. Kudos to BlackBerry and TCL for the KeyOne. It will fulfill its mission admirably!

    I have both. I love the KEYone. I think if the PRIV had a better keyboard and a better chipset then it would be a fantastic device. I did like having a full screen and the AMOLED display was gorgeous. but the KEYone is the far superior device. My favorite phone in some time. I just came off of a Galaxy S7 and don't miss it at all -- well, maybe the camera just a bit.

    Nice video with good points! I still love my priv though, although the keyone is tempting. Especially, because it seems the priv and Dtek devices seem to be in this limbo where they probably won't get any more updates to nougat or otherwise. At least, it seems that way.

    when I was getting a new phone, I had the option between a Priv, LG V10, and Nextbit Robin.
    the V10 is too big, the Priv has even worse heat problems than the Robin, and both the Priv and v10 have horrible dev support.
    very happy I got the Robin. great phone, and at current prices I recommend it to everyone.

    I tried the KeyONE for 14 days and returned it. True it has better battery life, but using a fast charger, I've never had issues charging the Priv while playing music or surfing the web. Also, since the Marshmallow update, the Priv is far less laggy and also solved the overheating issue for me. Lastly, I prefer the Priv's physical keyboard because it's bigger and easier to type on. In addition, it has the full on-screen, amazing keyboard with SWYPE capability that the KeyONE lacks, and the capacitive navigation buttons on the KeyONE always got in my way.
    Personally, I'm sticking with the Priv and hope that TCL will make a next gen Priv 😉

    TCL makes good hardware / is a reliable manufacturer. I have an 11 year old TCL air conditioner that is still doing very very well and is highly praised by our local AC repair guy. Also have a recently purchased 49" TV which has much better build quality than TV sets 4 times more expensive. I've never bought, but have held and used a couple of TCL phones. Build quality is the one thing that stood out even though the specs were sub-par for the price range.
    I feel BB made the right choice.

    WTF. My Priv from the newest batch does 2 full days on heavy use, and I have never had problems with overheating. Slider form-factor is actually an advantage, as the screen is bigger and you can choose between on-screen and hardware keyboards. Need to open a huge Excel spreadsheet? Slide out the keyboard and you're done - you can see a full A4 page and write in the same time. Not possible on any other phone.

      I have to admit, the Priv design was such a great idea. It really makes me sick with disappointment, all the comments about overheating. . . .

      Priv design was definitely better, too bad it was gimped by the terrible SD808. I'd love to see a 2.0 with a SD835 or 660

    I had a priv, it was a prototype....it bugged out to much and overheated way to easily....the key1 is a perfected combo of android meets BB... However the priv had wireless charging like my s9+ does...but takes a wireless charging pad, that did not become more prevalent till the iPhone X and s9+ era of 2016-2017....wireless charging has been around since 2007...

    I know everyone with a Priv wants to yell that "maybe you got a defective phone" and "mine doesn't do that" I assure you I got my phone a year after the release date to ensure everything on the phone would be bug free and my phone still has sliding issues, over heating problems (to the point that my phone just shuts off over little things), and battery issues. My pocket has felt like this man's pocket before and nothing is worse than a brick of fire on your thigh and realizing that your leg can sweat in one singular isolated area. No one wants to have to take their phone out of their pocket and put it somewhere random at work when their phone decides to overheat, but that's just what ends up happening.

      I just got the keyone on Friday because I hate glass keyboards, and immediately I can type so much faster. Being able to touch type is fantastic, and not having to fight against the autocorrect of other keyboards is an amazing time save if you have a vocabulary of more than 20 words
