    Filmed in Raritan Bay NJ at the beginning of the Striper run. We trolled to pick at fish until we finally found a MASSIVE body of Striped Bass rolling the surface feeding on small Bunker.

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Theres debate on this from the canadian research board. Bass jaws are damaged when you lift them from the lips causing trouble feeding and sometimes permenant damage with larger bass. The ultimate way to support a striped bass is by the belly and jaw horizontally, but even experts say that a proper gill plate lift to belly transfer is more appropriate than a jaw lift. In the end, the only proper way to handle a fish is to not catch them if your going to release lol. Second up would be net handling in the water and not lifting. Thanks for the input!

      Yeah you could do a plug and insert/glue a piece of sponge into the body, and then add a drop of oil every 30 casts. I have done this type of thing for many years and it is extremely effective. A drop goes a long way!

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the Bay, so depths are mostly 30' but sometimes as little as 15' FOW.
      We run mostly braid but also use two wire rods for umbrellas.
      You can use virtually any line setup. I prefer a good 100' mono as a "leader" on any trolling rig, to "soften" the setup.
      They make weighted lead swivels up to several lbs on lure making supply sites. Would be messing with them if I had to change a setup, because ultimately in MY opinion, straight mono carries the most benefits for trolling aside from its buoyancy.

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 3lb swivel and straight mono would mostly act at least as good as wire for trolling up to 60'

    NICE! Any idea where I can buy those mojo’s in the smaller sizes for using in freshwater? Smallest I’ve seen are just 8 oz, like to find them in 4 and 6 oz models.

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should be available in those sizes just search. If not, then you can come up with some type of rig using jig heads along with lead sinkers to make up the weight but I do think you will find them in single rigs for the weights you mention, you can use two single rigs and tie your own double tandem rig just search mojo bucktail rig on google images.
      I accidentally deleted your other comment on how far to let them out. I explain this in the video in the beginning. I let them out slowly until im figuring they are getting close to bottom in whatever the depth, then I will let them out free spool until I feel them hit bottom and I lock the spool. Then after they straighten out I do the same thing again to ensure they are right off bottom at the settled speed. Its a skillset to develop for sure, feeling them hit bottom.

    Great vid. I use to fish there. Did I see you guys trolling double of those big bucktails on 1 pole?

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, this rig was a "tandem mojo bucktail" rig. a heavy front lower dropper with a long length lighter weight "teaser" bucktail off the rear. The front heavy one gives you something to feel bottom with while the lighter one stays swimming higher off bottom to take the bite. They work great. For shallow water you can get away with a single bucktail but for deeper water, the heavy bucktails dont act naturally until you add the second lighter one as a teaser.

    • @thomastuorto9929
      @thomastuorto9929 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      r the reply. u say lighter do you mean 1-3 oz ?

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use your judgement. For example lets use 50ft of water
      to get any swimbait down that far while trolling, your looking at atleast 10-16oz to be sure its at the bottom. Then for your second trailer bucktail you can cut that weight 70%.
      So for a 12oz bucktail I would then try about a 4-6oz teaser bucktail. As you stated, you can make any combinations youd like! The lighter the teaser, the more real it "should" look.
      You could run an 8oz lead weight with a weightless swimbait rigged 6' behind
      Your main bucktail is what determines how deep you can go, and the teaser just acts as a more natural looking lure to take the hit. They almost always hit the lighter one in the rear because it looks more real than the heavy one.
      ** You can also eliminate the heavy bucktail and instead use a standard lead weight. Obviously, using a bucktail as the main weight, adds to the presentation**
      They sell these double rigs pre made. Just search "mojo bucktail trolling"

    I do alot of summertime fishing for fluke,seabass etc out of manasquan , but I'm new to the world of striper fishing (only surf casted for them) would this technique work well in the early spring?

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is highly effective during both spring and fall runs. If you troll manasquan you will not often find results like this video, the fish are typically spread out as they pass Squan and only a few days per run they are heavily saturated there. What we do is we keep our boat up at a marina in Raritan for the spring run, (its cheap) then down to our Squan slip once fluke starts. The striper condense heavily in the Raritan bay during every run.

    • @jackfaught8539
      @jackfaught8539 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you keep it? And what's cheap?
      Mine is across the street from the highlands, but I hate that ramp

    • @ripptydevibes2581
      @ripptydevibes2581  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forget, we used to just tow it everytime from our manasquan dock, but then he found a cheap marina that we were able to keep it parked right by their ramp. It was a sketchy setup for sure though. Just call and talk around, there are small marinas with their own tiny launches that work for boats under 28' that would rent you a two month lot.
