    Great Video! It looks like the treble stinger hook is catching the gill plates. It may help to change the main single hook to a treble and omit the treble stinger. I noticed that I was losing more fish with the bunker spoons than with the mojos, so I haven’t been using the spoons as much. I figure the dynamics of the lure made it easier for a fish to shake it off. I’ll swap my hooks to treble and see how it goes.

    Great, informative, video! Doc, that twenty-ounce "thing" is a Mojo. That's the standard short/deep lure used in spreads here in Virginia Beach. Normally they will be followed by Mann's Stretch lures, with a large swim shad waaayyy back. Great gouge on depth calculations (Particularly with the drail weights). I'm one of the few people here who swear by bunker spoons, and routinely catch crap from my buddies when I stream one out. The proof of the pudding, though, is in the tasting, and mine tastes like fresh striper! Thanks, guys!

      Yes. I bought it at Virginia Bass Pro Shops.. But I could not remember the name. The two together work great.

      Out-rodders are on the wrong side Bro. Pin ring should be facing the bow for easy removal .......... actually they are marked on outrodder ....... Tight Lines

    Good video - I do a lot of fishing by Rockaway Inlet and had an excellent season last year with fish up to 47lbs... there are times where the fish are much deeper where you need to add weight to get down which you pointed out...most of my fishing is normally 35ft or less so I never had to worry about adding anything to the wire to get down deeper but there are times where I should have added weight when the fish are deeper...don't have any experience with adding weights to these rigs... I had a couple questions.. I noticed how you mentioned adding a mojo for extra weight on a three way swivel and a bunker spoon 20ft back of that... when the 3 way swivel is near the rod tip...how do you get the fish in the boat when you have 20 ft still out there? I presume hand lining it in...I'm sure that may be a pain...I'd assume also that mojo possibly getting wrapping around the other line...just curious.... also, if you had example of how you rig the drail weight with the bunker spoon.....what is the distance between the weight and the spoon..thanks in advance and tight lines!

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes with the spoon / Mojo combo you do have to hand line it the remaining 20'. as for the drail, put the drail on the swivel where the spoon would normally go. then ad 15' of mono and attach the spoon. The spoon will still have the action needed to catch fish.

    Hey guys nice tip with the spoon off the mojo gonna try that tmr morning. But if your just weighing them down with just mono how do you know when your as deep as you need to be? With the mojo it's easy I bump the bottom and crank it up a few reels.

    • @chasintailtv
      @chasintailtv  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Guerrera mono I am not sure of mono, but braid with 400' out is said to get you 30' down with no weight.

    I make lures for a living and have often thought of making a striper plug that could be filled with chum or oil, or crab meat.....what are your thoughts?

    • @rgwaldron
      @rgwaldron 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the meat ,it's the motion, I've caught stripers on everything from swim shads to bunker heads,Mojo's and bunker spoons. It's is always the motion that attracts the fish

    Cool to see them releasing the bigguns. I like the heavy mojo as a downrigger paired up with a bunker spoon to get those suckers down. However, I don't us 20ft of leader line to the spoon. I use just slightly more than the length of the line to the mojo. I'm not sure how they get the extra 20' of line up once they reel to the swivel. A good tip I was given that the leader should be no longer than the rod tip to water line. That's gaffable and nettable without having to hand line the leader in.

  • @njacobs2901

    So I ended up getting the recommended steel line but its one 300'? My question is are people somehow attaching mono to the steel line on the spool? I've heard people say they let out all 300' but if you only have 300' and the fish hits you've got no steel line left, I must be missing something. Last year I tried letting out the spoon 250' with just mono and found that the spoon would end up popping up on the surface not staying down? I've seen many videos and it doesn't look like people are using weights before the spoon so what is keeping these spoons down?

    • @chasintailtv
      @chasintailtv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to use mono or dacron backing first, then the wire, then the leader, then the spoon. The easy way to determine how much backing you need is to load the wire, then top of with backing. Then pull it all off and reverse it by putting the backing on first and spooling the rest up. You can connect the wire to mono backing / leader using a small swivel or an albright knot.
      Some people are using super braid instead of wire, and using a drail between the braid and the leader to get the spoon down. It works, but I prefer the simplicity of using wire. I usually let out all my wire down to my backing. That's 30' down. If I need to get down more I start adding drail weights.
      Check out Capt Savene's video. he explains a lot of the details..

      @@chasintailtv I appreciate the info I've never had a swivel mixed in my spool before so that is new to me. I frequently use inline sinkers but never noticed them before the leaders on maja bunker spoon videos. I gave up last year when i saw the bunker spoons on the surface. I guess the wire itself gets them down. Again, your help us much appreciative.

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      with the Maja outrodders you really should be using 15 degree or zero degree. The 30 degree rod holders require to leave the pin in the outrodder or it will swing up. The new boat has the 15 degree rod holders in it so I now leave the pin out. Definitely hard to pull out with the pressure on it.

    Hey guys, I'm John, and I fish the same area as you guys. I've been trolling spoons for years, pulling wire, and have done very well, learning from some of the original old timers, who practically invented the spoon. My question is, if I wanted to pull spoons with say 65 lb braid, "power pro", do you guys know what the line out to depth ratio is? I know the wire is 100 feet to approx. 10 feet down. Any idea about the braid? I also like to use 12 oz drails . Appreciate your help. JP

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has been said that 400' of 65# braid runs around the same depth as 300' of wire. There is a chart somewhere online. If I troll braid, I use a 16oz drail to help out.

      No. That fish was kept. Fish gaffed in the head obviously don't release well.
      We release many...occasionally we enjoy eating one.

  • @bob06905

    Why don't you use a net on the fish, you guys kill everything.

    • @chasintailtv
      @chasintailtv  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, we do use a net in the video. Yes, we do keep some fish. We also release others. No, we don't kill everything.
      We gaff the fish that we plan to keep and are obviously over legal limit (4:48). We net the ones that we are unsure about and may decide to keep (13:20) and hand lip the fish we plan to release (7:11 and 12:09)
