Hey, Rich. A while back one of your videos talked about the high pressure of the fuel injectors. So I decided to check and smell of the oil. Every 1,000 miles. At 3,000 miles the smell of fuel in the oil starts. By 4,500 miles. The oil really begins to get worse. So I change my 5w30 Full Synthetic Motorcraft oil at 4,000. Just to be safe. I really like my 2.0 turbo Eco-Boost engine. Shawn.
I absolutely agree we have a 2.0l gdi Hyundai motor 2020 Tucson 38,000miles with a catch can but yes the oil starts to dilute and mix pretty noticeable at just about 4,500 miles I’m sticking to changing at 4,000miles I do it myself, 4,000 is the sweet spot. Drives like a absolute champ no loss of power at all and I suspect very little carbon buildup on intake valves catch can is a life saver I’m never taking it off only at dealer visits for little things.
@@henrytom5824 Hey Henry! I dropped down on my octane to 89. Because of the price. I buy octane boost and injection cleaner. Then add 4 oz's Marvel Mystery oil. My 2017 Escape Titanium AWD 2.0 turbo Eco-Boost. Runs awesome. I use Motorcraft 5W30 Full Synthetic oil. Because of the turbo heat. The gas smell at 4,000 and the oil changes color. I don't have a catch can. But thought I might add one. What kind do you use? Shawn.
@@shawnbeck2303 Yes these gdi motors run so much better on 89 octane I just put a tank of it in and man it doesn’t ping at all drives beautifully it drives fine on 87 octane but it pings every now and then it does it abit more now maybe because here in Florida weather is abit cooler, it didn’t ping as much on 87 octane in the summer heat and it makes me cringe when it does. I run the cheapest catch can on Amazon and it just works put the copper steel inside and just let it be check it maybe every two weeks. Also the hoses that come with it are garbage get some real fuel line like hoses at your locale auto parts. Even when we purchased this 2020 Tucson new it pinged with only 1,000 miles on it lol hyundai doesn’t make the best gdi motor they are sensitive man and I’d highly keep up on maintenance with quality oil and highly recommend a catch can.
@@shawnbeck2303 Octane boost is 100% a waste of money. It does effectively nothing (feel free to look it up), and it would be cheaper just to buy a higher grade of gas.
You said an important thing that civilians may not know. And that is that these direct injection engines are prone to fuel contamination. And that contamination greatly affects the oil's ability to protect the motor, even synthetics. Those 20,000 mile oil changes with synthetics are long gone. Three to four thousand is about it.
Sister's 3.5 EcoBoost MKT wore out cam chain at 60,000 miles, lots of stop and go driving and free oil changes "when required " at dealer. Last receipt said they used 5w20. Did they use 5w20 all the time? Luckily it got a timing set just inside of warranty. She got rid of it, it was a 🍋

Just had my first oil change on my 22 Ford Bronco Sport, with the 2.0 eco boost. Thanks for all the good info here!!! I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and until I saw some of your videos, I was unaware of the problems with eco boost engines and fuel contamination. I will get my next oil change in 4K miles and either get an oil analysis or ask, my mechanic, for the last 20 years, to pay particular attention to the possibility, of the problem. Then, if everything exceeds my new expectations, may go to a 5K oil change interval.
I just learned something today, I did not know the filters would lock up like that from sitting, It always seemed to me that the last tech just gorilla tightened it because they were afraid of leaks....just like the impact installed drain plugs with crush washers halfway into the threads.
I am a first responder and since I am the furthest out I drive my truck to the scene. Sometimes especially auto accidents it idles for quite a few hours. I keep a mental note on the hours and sometimes being 0w20 it gets changed at 2000 miles if the oil starts to smell fuel diluted.
the designer of the filter wrench may want to consider making the very top of the palm side a little wider, so it spreads the load out more in the palm, while still fitting into the finger section.being so thin, im sure its hell on the palms with a filter this tight.perhaps on a future production run if these sell well.
I need to find a good funnel. They are a requirement with these new fangled wide mouth bottles. The last oil change got a little messy when I went to fill the crankcase. A lot of brake clean was abused. 🤪🤪
Seems to me like there needs to be an engine hour spec in addition to the mileage spec with regards to the OCI. Consider a 10k mile OCI between 2 identical vehicles. One vehicle averages 50 MPH over its interval, and the other one only averages 25 MPH. One has 200 hours on the oil, and the other has 400 hours on the oil, but both have 10k miles on them. One of those vehicles is better suited to that 10k interval, and it’s easy to see which one. And that is where people don’t get that you can’t just use mileage for your OCI.
I like when the oil filter is vertical. Less mess. Break the filter loose. Take a plastic bag like a Walmart shopping bag and put around the filter and spin it off. No mess, never spill or spash oil elsewhere.
I agree I change my Maverick 2.0l eco boost oil every 4-5,000km. The first oil change was at 4000km I would love to see you do a transmission rear diff and transfer case fluid change. Edit great video.

It does not need oil changes that soon. There is a video where they test the oil properties at different intervals and you are perfectly fine to change the oil at 10,000-12,000 kms on these engines versus the 16,000 kms recommended by Ford.
30k miles and the shocks and ptu show signs of seepage. Not sure if it's just Ford or the whole automotive industry but quality of parts and customer support has gone downhill while vehicle prices go up.
I recently changed the oil & filter on my 2.0L Ecoboost at only 2500 miles because i was about to go on a long trip and wanted to start fresh on the OCI. I was surprised how black and dirty the oil looked after that mileage. I run 5w30 full synthetic in the winter and 5w40 in the summer due to extreme desert heat.
I understand Ford stating that shock absorber leaks should be more than 1/3 down the tube but shocks are designed with seals that should not leak. Especially with so few miles on it shows there is a problem. Have seen many shocks with well over 100K miles on it with no leaks. In Australia there are government consumer laws that state that parts should be of reputable quality. At less than 40K miles, these shocks would not be acceptable over here, despite what the manufacturer might say. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.
Yes I totally agree. Outside of a Ford dealership, I would think any reputable shop would be concerned seeing that. It sounds like Ford has seen a high failure of these shocks/struts and actually put out a service bulletin to their technicians to ONLY replace when it’s really bad. We know what Ford is doing. I am used to seeing shocks/struts without any noticeable oil seeping down to the main body. This doesn’t look good. Reason being, these are pressurized with a gas (usually nitrogen). When the seal is compromised and leaking oil, the nitrogen (which we cannot see) is also leaking. -Be safe out there…
I’ve had to break my habit of hitting the remote start on my Ranger before gathering all my stuff together and heading out the door for work as it could be out there running for 5min+ sometimes I definitely noticed not only more stuff in my catch can but my MPG was suffering nowadays I’ll wait till I’m out the door and walking to it at most it’ll run a minute or two now to break the habit of letting it run while at work while I switch between my personal vehicle and company vehicle sucks only being able to use the one parking spot for both first world problems 🤣
I absolutely love your work, and the time that you take to put into these videos. If you get time, please do a specific oil change and why you shouldn’t go over 5000 miles on the 4.6. I’m on all of these grand marquis and crown Vic pages arguing with people on why you shouldn’t go over 5000 miles and they specifically want to argue with me that it only goes for direct injection and turbo cars and they can go way over that. I have showed them links to your videos, and they still want to argue with me. I just want one video that specifically shuts them down. Lol. Ryder is cheap with replacing shocks as well. They say that if shocks aren't pooling oil on the ground, it's not replaceable. Despite 600k miles on factory semi shocks, they still say it's good.
You get great fuel economy as you oil viscosity gets diluted by gasoline. Some oil recycling stations will not take used motor oil if they smell gas contamination.
I have a 2021 F150 with the 2.7 baby boost. It sees a lot of idle time due to work. I try to keep the oil changed every 5k. Hope it lasts as I intend to purchase this truck when my company is thru with it in a few years.
Mine idles almost all winter 🤣 Haha forget that crap , servicing a generator outside for 1-1.5hrs in a foot of snow and it's 20 out I'm not getting in a cold truck. It's a 2016 with 137k on it so it's not direct injection but it still reeks by 6k,so it gets changed.
Did my first oil change on my new Bronco Sport with the 2.0, 1600 miles. I noticed the oil had a green tint to it. I’ve done a lot of oil changes over the years on different vehicles and I’ve never noticed a green tint before. There’s no milky white color in the valve cover.
My 2014 Escape originally had a dipstick that literally IMPOSSIBLE to read. It was bizarre. There actually was a recall on it that consisted of a new stick and also… get this…. A warning sticker to put on the engine cover to advise not to overfill. Ford does some really odd stuff. That said, we still have the vehicle at 87,000 miles.
Carb days are long gone. The old rule of 'you have to let your car warm up to lubricate the motor' is hog wash. You had to get the motor warm for the carb, otherwise your car would stall. With fuel injection, let alone direct port, that's an old wives tale.
I did not like how many miles the oil life monitor on my F150 would let pass before it prompts for an oil change. I'm glad on my F150 I can reset the monitor to 50% I'd rather it start pestering me at less than 5k than let it run twice as long.
Durham NC Lincoln Mercury tried to hire me b4 I went to work for Sears Automotive back in the 80's. They were gonna send me to tranny school + pay me 15$ an hour. Mid 80's I opened my own shop.

One thing I have learned about these ford ecoboost cars is to get rid of them as they tend to develop quite a number of extremely concerning issues. I decided to trade in my 2018 Ford Escape 2.0 EcoBoost with the revised engine for extra money to overhaul my old Ford Tempo, which btw, I haven't done no engine work whatsoever. Only maintenance tasks like replacing coolant lines, replacing fluids every now and then, the radiator (plastic crap, it didn't have a steel radiator), brakes and shocks, and after 30 years, it is still running so much stronger than a recent economy car, and will outlast most of today's cars.
My 2.0l gdi engine reached 135k. I’ve been running 5w-30 in it for Uber because it’s on all day. I change the oil every 3k miles because of city driving in LA. Do you think I should switch back to 5w-20? The 5w-30 helped a lot for how I use my car. I usually drive an hour on the freeway before work and after work going home to clear out any carbon build up from each day.
On all 5 of my vehicles my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 3k miles oil changes My 06 mountaineer 4.0 v6 3k full synthetic 07 Mountaineer 4.0 v6 3k miles oil changes full synthetic 2002 Ford F-150 4.6 tritan v8 2 valve full synthetic 3k oils changes 2018 Ford Flex 3.5 no turbo every 3k miles oil changes with full synthetic lol 😂 I’m just one of those people
Transmissions are garbage on those. PTU a small bomb looking for a time to blow. Electronics 🙄 where do I start? Been a lifelong Ford guy, still am, but won't buy another new Ford. I've had several new Ford vehicles, the most recent 2018 F350 4x4 (junk), and watched quality is job one go to no quality at all. 1995 or earlier is the only Ford I'll ever buy again.
So why does my Ford Dealership recommend 7k-10k for oil changes on my Escape? The other issue is I had my engine replaced because of coolant intrusion a year ago, but my care always smells like I have a coolant leak, and I am always having to add coolant every month because it just dissappears???
Because they are going by the wrong interval and lots of.people have maintenance contracts so if you change the oil more it costs them more so they run you out further
Just had one of these roll in with misfire history and was a gallon low on antifreeze with 43k miles were the 2020s susceptible to coolant intrusion? We had to send her to the dealer hopefully it's covered under warranty

Do you worry about getting oil on your skin? I never use gloves but see people using them. Guess they are afraid of carcinogens. But I can't stand my hands sweating in those exam gloves.
If I BUY THIS car and change oil every 3000 miles, full synthetic, drive conservative, which I do, would you expect able to get 180-200 k out of this motor? Thanks.
95% oil life left my butt. Someone had reset the oil life counter without changing the oil just before going to auction again. Large amount of idle time should drag the oil life counter down. Bolts missing on under belly plate and car quest filter means it sat on a none ford dealer lot and probably was some salesperson's daily driver. Question is did you replace the missing belly plate bolts?? Or just add to the none love this car has experienced.
Out of curiosity, because of the orientation of the oil filter, could you pre-fill the oil filter before instillation? I really don't know if my wife's car, 2017 Escape SE 2.0L ecoboost, has the flood-start feature. Thank you.
If I show you this feature and I don't specify that it only works on this particular year that means typically that it works on all Fords which I'm telling you right now your wife's car does do this it works literally on all Fords ever made
I just got a 22 f150 5.0. It’s got around 2k miles on it. Going to do first oil change and replace it with the factory motorcraft semi synthetic for another 2k miles. Is it ok after the second oil change to switch to synthetic? Not amsoil or anything, penzoil platinum synthetic. It’ll have around 4-4500 miles when I do.
So you're not paying attention because I gave the reason why these oil changes on these particular vehicles have fuel contamination I clearly stated that these vehicles were auction vehicles that were probably idle more than anything on the lot while they're being run through so other dealers and stuff can look at them before somebody buys them, you got to do better when you're listening so you don't accuse me of not doing something that I'm clearly doing

You can't do flood mode on diesels technically there is a way you can do it but you have to like pull the starter relay and crank it over that way I wouldn't do it though I just make sure you have some real good batteries in there and don't ever start that thing with weak batteries

I have a catch can on mine, in the winter it catches quite a bit of fuel and need to empty it once a week or so.
Gotta love the forward facing drain bolt on the 2.0 bronco sports.

You mean the rear shock absorbers? At 5,500 miles on a 2020 Escape Hybrid, both rear shocks are leaking, mostly the driver's side.
I have a 2021 F150 with the 2.7 baby boost. It sees a lot of idle time due to work. I try to keep the oil changed every 5k. Hope it lasts as I intend to purchase this truck when my company is thru with it in a few years.

Haha forget that crap , servicing a generator outside for 1-1.5hrs in a foot of snow and it's 20 out I'm not getting in a cold truck.
It's a 2016 with 137k on it so it's not direct injection but it still reeks by 6k,so it gets changed.
Did my first oil change on my new Bronco Sport with the 2.0, 1600 miles. I noticed the oil had a green tint to it. I’ve done a lot of oil changes over the years on different vehicles and I’ve never noticed a green tint before. There’s no milky white color in the valve cover.
It's because they use a dye from the factory to look for oil leaks
My 2014 Escape originally had a dipstick that literally IMPOSSIBLE to read. It was bizarre. There actually was a recall on it that consisted of a new stick and also… get this…. A warning sticker to put on the engine cover to advise not to overfill. Ford does some really odd stuff. That said, we still have the vehicle at 87,000 miles.
Carb days are long gone. The old rule of 'you have to let your car warm up to lubricate the motor' is hog wash. You had to get the motor warm for the carb, otherwise your car would stall. With fuel injection, let alone direct port, that's an old wives tale.
Not used to seeing no rust lol. Even my 2022 maverick had rust spots already on the exhaust after first winter
I did not like how many miles the oil life monitor on my F150 would let pass before it prompts for an oil change. I'm glad on my F150 I can reset the monitor to 50% I'd rather it start pestering me at less than 5k than let it run twice as long.

One thing I have learned about these ford ecoboost cars is to get rid of them as they tend to develop quite a number of extremely concerning issues. I decided to trade in my 2018 Ford Escape 2.0 EcoBoost with the revised engine for extra money to overhaul my old Ford Tempo, which btw, I haven't done no engine work whatsoever. Only maintenance tasks like replacing coolant lines, replacing fluids every now and then, the radiator (plastic crap, it didn't have a steel radiator), brakes and shocks, and after 30 years, it is still running so much stronger than a recent economy car, and will outlast most of today's cars.
What’s your thoughts on using 5w-30 on the new 1.5L 3 cylinder?
My 2.0l gdi engine reached 135k. I’ve been running 5w-30 in it for Uber because it’s on all day. I change the oil every 3k miles because of city driving in LA. Do you think I should switch back to 5w-20? The 5w-30 helped a lot for how I use my car. I usually drive an hour on the freeway before work and after work going home to clear out any carbon build up from each day.
Would the lack of light oil on the filter ring make it dry & sick like that too?

I was surprised about those rear shocks. At 30k mikes these shocks shouldn’t have this film. Perhaps I’m missing something on Ford OE shocks?

Transmissions are garbage on those. PTU a small bomb looking for a time to blow. Electronics 🙄 where do I start? Been a lifelong Ford guy, still am, but won't buy another new Ford. I've had several new Ford vehicles, the most recent 2018 F350 4x4 (junk), and watched quality is job one go to no quality at all. 1995 or earlier is the only Ford I'll ever buy again.

So why does my Ford Dealership recommend 7k-10k for oil changes on my Escape? The other issue is I had my engine replaced because of coolant intrusion a year ago, but my care always smells like I have a coolant leak, and I am always having to add coolant every month because it just dissappears???
Because they are going by the wrong interval and lots of.people have maintenance contracts so if you change the oil more it costs them more so they run you out further

Just had one of these roll in with misfire history and was a gallon low on antifreeze with 43k miles were the 2020s susceptible to coolant intrusion? We had to send her to the dealer hopefully it's covered under warranty
Some of the 2020 model 2.0 liter EcoBoost had EDR cooler failure so it wasn't the engine it was the EGR cooler failure

Do you worry about getting oil on your skin? I never use gloves but see people using them. Guess they are afraid of carcinogens. But I can't stand my hands sweating in those exam gloves.

95% oil life left my butt. Someone had reset the oil life counter without changing the oil just before going to auction again. Large amount of idle time should drag the oil life counter down. Bolts missing on under belly plate and car quest filter means it sat on a none ford dealer lot and probably was some salesperson's daily driver. Question is did you replace the missing belly plate bolts?? Or just add to the none love this car has experienced.
You have to realize these were probably serviced before they went to the auction to be sold so it might have 95% oil life but it's been sitting idling
Out of curiosity, because of the orientation of the oil filter, could you pre-fill the oil filter before instillation? I really don't know if my wife's car, 2017 Escape SE 2.0L ecoboost, has the flood-start feature. Thank you.
If I show you this feature and I don't specify that it only works on this particular year that means typically that it works on all Fords which I'm telling you right now your wife's car does do this it works literally on all Fords ever made

I just got a 22 f150 5.0. It’s got around 2k miles on it. Going to do first oil change and replace it with the factory motorcraft semi synthetic for another 2k miles. Is it ok after the second oil change to switch to synthetic? Not amsoil or anything, penzoil platinum synthetic. It’ll have around 4-4500 miles when I do.
Most certainly you can do that
I left the factory fill for 5,200 on a 22 F150 5.0 and now every 5k thereafter and that includes towing and high idle hrs

So you're not paying attention because I gave the reason why these oil changes on these particular vehicles have fuel contamination I clearly stated that these vehicles were auction vehicles that were probably idle more than anything on the lot while they're being run through so other dealers and stuff can look at them before somebody buys them, you got to do better when you're listening so you don't accuse me of not doing something that I'm clearly doing

No
You can't do flood mode on diesels technically there is a way you can do it but you have to like pull the starter relay and crank it over that way I wouldn't do it though I just make sure you have some real good batteries in there and don't ever start that thing with weak batteries
