Thank you for taking care of him and doing such a great job! If you live in IL close to this shop and you own a Ford or a Lincoln this is the ONLY shop I’d trust to work on your Truck or Car!!!!!
Great videos, keep up the good work. Just bought a 2022 sel awd gas only 2.0 escape and would love to see a transmission fluid service procedure. Thank you for all your videos.
This is a timely vid on this procedure. I watched in horror as pre-2020 Escape PTU'S were replaced after cooking-off and spontaneously dis-assembling themselves. This video makes my life much easier as I intend on changing out the fluids every 30,000 km - or 18,000 miles. Cheap insurance. Great vid once again!!!
You can go another 30,000 km more than 18,000 km. The recommendation is 30,000 - 35,000 miles ...so convert that to kilometers and that's 48,280 - 56,327 km. It's cheap insurance, sure, but unless you're towing and hauling a lot, 48,000 - 56,000 km should be fine.
It is always nice to see when it is very easy to regular maintenance on your vehicle. More so when a PRO is coaching you through all the steps and including torque specifications.
Yet another great video. My wife inherited Grandpas Super low mileage 2015 Edge. Upon changing ALL the fluids when we first got it, I was super stoked to find the PTU had Drain and Fill Plugs. It's not a big deal for me so I have been changing the fluid at about every 10k or every other Oil Change. Piece a' Cake...
I'm sure someone will cry about the shield when they need to take it down, but for once it looks like Ford made some engineering changes that are legitimately beneficial for servicing AND longevity. I'm glad somebody got their head on straight on the design team.
ALWAYS tell your viewers to remove the fill plug first then remove the drain plug. If you can not remove the fill plug then you will be towing it to the service center to have the fill plug removed, or driving it and damaging the PTU because you drove it without any fluid. Other than that, another awesome video Brian!
I have heard this comment before but in all my years of working on vehicles in the rust belt of America I have never ever had this concern. Do you see this often or something? The thread are NPT and some are NPTF so it's a very tight seal and they never corrode.
@@FordTechMakuloco I usually have to crack the PTU fill and drain plugs on the previous gen Escapes with an 18" breaker bar even when they were properly torqued the last time. The salt corrosion locks the first set of threads on the outside every time. Makes me nervous so I second the advice of cracking the fill plug first. Stripping the fill plug could be an issue if bit slips out due to the amount of torque involved. The transmission level plug is another bad one, it took 150+ ft lbs to crack one open last time. Thread sealant may help stop corrosion but I didn't see that mentioned in the service manual, only on the 6F35 drain plug.
In many older Ford vehicles they maliciously decided not to put the drain plug on PTU and RTU. Good to see ford is learning how to make a good reliable engine and transmission while rest of the world is moving towards EV technology.
Really enjoy my girlfriends 2020. Definitely a lot of upgrades over my 14. She already has about 8,000 miles on it while my 14 is closing on 170k without trouble. Always did the ptu at 10k-15k miles did the trans every 30k and engine every 5k. While its not as fun as my supercharged mustang they definitely are nice commuter vehicles and fairly cheap to maintain.
Thanks for posting this! I'm a new Escape owner and catching it up. Mine was just in a Ford dealership today and they told me the PTU and rear differential aren't serviceable... I guess I'll be doing this myself. 🤦
Bought a used 2020 Escape Titanium with 52K. Just changed the PTU oil. Looked like metallic paint. Worked out just as you showed. Thanks so much. Would you do 8F35 transmission fluid change?
for Ford TechMakuloco, I know you're busy with a ton of other shit, but can you put a video of doing a 2020-2021 Ford Escape CVT fluid change? I'd really appreciate that. Your video on this PTU was great and exactly what I'll need in the near future. Thanks in advance. Have a great day! (I ordered the forscan 3 year as the lifetime is not available right now)
Thanks FordTechMakuloco for the inside view of the PTU and showing where the fill and drain ports are. I was thinking that was the drain port on the bottom, but couldn't find the fill port. I will remove the fill port plug first tho. My 22' Maverick has the exact same design of PTU and just over 5,000 miles so very soon I'll be just making sure they added the correct amount of 75w - 140 ..not draining anything. When I first got the chance to check the tire pressures, I found the factory had them over-filled to 44psi (the maximum pressure on the sidewalls). It's a trucklet but still rides a lot softer at the correct 35psi cold pressure. So knowing these trucklets were rushed together makes me want to check those expensive components.
Watched your other videos and did the ptu oil change on my 08 escape 👍. Having intermittent overcharging issues that cuts out the power steering that I can’t seem to solve.
Hi I’m so glad my year is a 2020. I’m not sure if I can fit under my car to try this. My Ford dealership won’t do it. They said they don’t service this lol they did let me know if I replaced the whole unit they can do that.😂😂😂🙌🏻
The metal nuts are the replacement part now. I just replaced the red plastic ones on our 17 Escape. I think they were $1.40 each. They look to be galvanized. Easy swap.
Hey Brian want thank you for all the great videos I have a 2005 f150 with 5.4l engine, transmision is 4r75e, rear end is 373 axle is 9.75, wheel base is 139 inches and my question is I tow a 9,000 pound camper and it seems to tow best at 3,000 rpm is that to High of an rpm to run the engine at for hours? my my max towing is 9,300 pounds
Judging by another video, the underside of the new Maverick looks identical. Plugs in the same place and all. (Of course it is based on the Escape) but its good to know Ford left well enough alone with the 'new' design and didn't go back to cheapening things up.
@@FordTechMakuloco So, would it be wise to do drain and fills of the transmission fluid every 30k like the 3rd gens to maximize the life of the transmission?
Thanks for the update Bryan. I guess Ford really did listen to the owners with the 2014 ish units. Why in the world they don't get MECHANICS instead of engineers to build these cars is beyond me. For me I think I will look at a Chevy for my next vehicle.
Is this process and change interval the same for the Lincoln Corsair 2.3? I have a '22 with only 4K on the clock and I want to make sure the PTU doesn't become an issue.
On my way to work at 5am this morning (downtown Detroit) I saw an older Escape driving down the freeway with no rear diff cover on it. He was rolling along at 70mph with everything just whirring away (literally) back there. Wish I had a decent phone to take video. How long can one drive like that before catastrophic failure? #onlyindetroit #fordtough
Hey bro always watch ya videos and have learned from them thr past 10 yrs. I recently traded in my 2012 fusion sport 87 k miles because of that water pump issue that drains coolant into oil pan. $2000 - $3000 job here to do in Cali. So I traded it in and got a 2020 Ford Edge ST with 38 k Miles. I’m gonna do all fluid changes but do you have ANY videos on 2019-2020 Ford Edge ST PTU fluids changes or anything else on edge ST ? Would love to hear back from you Alex from Cali
Good job Maku, camera quality is great. What camera do you use and editing software if you don't mind me asking? I like Vegas and Premiere but curious on what you use.
Is this the same PTU as the 2021 Ford EcoSport SE? If not, then do they both at least have the same size drain bolts and torque specs? I could've sworn I saw 44ftlbs tight for the drain bolt of the EcoSport. I want to get it right. Bought a small torque wrench with 1/4 drive, so I'll need an adapter for sure. Also, is there a drain bolt for the rear differential? I don't see one on mine. I only see a fill plug. I'd like to switch to a synthetic for that. Just got a 500cc vacumn pump in case it needs to be taken out through the fill plug. I have plans for this EcoSport, such as getting it on jack stands and spraying the crap out of everything with Fluid Film to fight rust here in MI. Inside the door jambs...everything. One more question: can a 3 ton floor jack lift the entire front end by the middle of the subframe? It looks really sturdy. Because I need to place the jack stands under the pinch welds. Want some rubber jack stand adapters that fit SUV size 6 ton stands for pinch welds. I don't want to damage them...or anything else. I changed my own oil for first time ever, and want to do a little more. Oil filter was so tight, it took everything in me to take it off. Someone sabatoged it to be that impossibly tight. Probably to keep people from doing it themselves.
I see they also followed VW on the ac compressor design using a valve solenoid for driving the AC compressor load. No more clutches, don't know what's better but the valve solenoid is easier to service instead of the clutch.
Wonder why AAM the manufacturer of the 20+ disconnecting PTU skipped the drain plug on the Cherokee disconnecting PTU AAM has been manufacturing since 2014.
@Jonathan A Your fusion is another story. One of the worst cars ford has made. Really the only good thing in the 1.5 and 2nd gen fusions is the 2.5L engine.
@FordTechMakuloco my 15yr old son has just started driving, and wants a 2006 or newer 4x4 Ranger. Is this a good choice? I haven't seen many of these in your videos. I know you specialize in 5.4L 3 Valve, what about the 4.0L V6? With seeing the detail you put into these video tutorials, I trust you above all others. If this is something you recommend, would I be able to bring one from the Chicago area, to you for an inspection? Fee or otherwise
I have a question I have a 2020 Ford escape SEL front wheel drive eco-boost yesterday I started it up and put it on reverse and it doesn’t go on reverse. I got a code. P0766 only has 19k miles going to bring it to the dealer next week because they are busy. It goes on drive.
I believe it should be pretty close to this as the 2019 Edge was their first SUV to use the new All Wheel Drive Disconnect system and in 2020 the Escape came with the new All Wheel Drive Disconnect system
Every 30k? Ridiculous! My wifes 2013 Escape transmission just went out with only 85k on it. We did service the transmission every 30k as you recommended in one of your earlier videos. We decided to go with a Honda Passport this time around. Ford transmissions have become a joke lately. Transmission guy says he has them coming in for complete rebuilds between 75 and 120k. Anyway, does the ford maintenance schedule call for 30k transmission servicing? Her 2013 did not.
Go and watch Precision Transmission TH-cam channel from Amarillo, TX all they do is rebuild GM transmissions every now and then a dodge or a Ford transmission and it’s not because they specialize in just GM stuff. The father can and is amazing at any and all manufacturers transmissions he’s pretty amazing to watch!
I wish you were more out west. Would love for you to do work on my truck. Just don't trust anyone out here in Vegas. Need a timing job. And alot of reason I have not got one done. Local dealerships will not do it due to age. 2006. Which is crazy cause mine I better than any used vehicle they have on lot. Crazy
He made it sound more like a recommendation than a need. My 2012 Santa Fe has a "lifetime" transmission fluid interval according to the owners manual, but I'll be changing it once it hits 30K. Keep your fluids clean.
the older generations of escapes had it even worse. They were not water cooled, ran next to the exhaust and were tucked up away from air flow. Also they only had a fill port so if you didn't have much means to get sludge that inevitably formed out.
Previous designs had a tendency to degrade the oil super fast, they got really hot then it destroyed the gears and bearings. If i drove a heavy vehicle with a PTO, I'd probably change the oil every year. Could probably be extended if it looked ok every year, maybe do 2 years.
The issue is the PTU doesn’t hold a lot of fluid so it doesn’t take as long to degrade. The older design PTUs are even worse (Edge, Explorer, Taurus, Flex, etc) On those cars the PTU is close to the hot exhaust and hold less than a quart of fluid. Even on a car that sees low mileage the fluid will be black in a year and turns to sludge quickly if you don’t stay on top of it. And most of those units don’t have a drain plug to change it and are listed as “lifetime filled” in the owners manual. We have a 2016 Flex AWD. I drilled and tapped the PTU to install a drain plug and I change the fluid every year. Overkill? Perhaps.......but fluid is cheap compared to replacing a PTU

I can't find anything in the maintenance schedule about this. Is this necessary? If so, why doesn't Ford say anything about it?
Service procedure for automatic transmission in this car? (escape 2.0)
Another great video.
Do you think the 2020 Edge AWD will be the same?
I believe it should be pretty close to this as the 2019 Edge was their first SUV to use the new All Wheel Drive Disconnect system and in 2020 the Escape came with the new All Wheel Drive Disconnect system
Had my 16 sho changed at 25k. Pure mud and chunky.
PTU drain on Explorer 5 minutes, refill through homemade vent tube, 2 hours for 18 ounces
Where are you located?
Great video
Did I miss the oil draining?
Nope, why watch oil draining?
Curiosity. I have a MKS AWD and the tranny temp is 210. Active grill shutters causing higher temps?
What’s wrong with 210?
@@FordTechMakuloco thought anything above 200 is no good.
Perfectly normal, anything above 230 is not normal.
@@FordTechMakuloco runs a little hotter then my burban. Thanks for all you do!! Love them PTU vids.
This procedure should also apply to the Bronco Sport; and to the Maverick AWD.
yup
Every 30k?
Do you have video on 2007 MKX PTU fluid exchange? Ford recommendations removing unit to drain fluid.
Yes I do.

Only if they made it this easy on my 13' SHO. Though it has the performance package so it's at least serviceable.
Crazy
👍👍
Brilliant, however, the person who determined the location of the fill plug ensured that an allen wrench could not be used.
Only 30K and maintenance is needed?
I do not know of any other brand that needs this so soon.
Low quality fluid? Too hot?
I follow you alot how can I get in contact with you.
He's married.

Update now the thing only has allwheel drive when you don't need it
Metal Screws - WOW.
Metal nuts actually
Clarification...all wheel drive Escape/Escape Hybrids?
Correct. The PTU is not part of the 2WD models. Hybrids might be different part though. Might want to look into if they are the same unit first.
