      Why is it necessary to lift suspension while tightening the 2 bolts? Is it gonna fall out if I don't?

    • @jamesemerson7445
      @jamesemerson7445 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@staind288 On suspension bushings, it needs to be at its ride height because when you tighten the bolt, it clamps the metal sleeve in the center of the bushing. If you tighten it and then lower it to its ride height, it flexes the sleeve inside tge bushing beyond its designed limit and will wear out your bushing early.

    Brake pads. I had a 97 Ford 150 which I bought new in 98. When I took it in for the 100 k tune up they said the pads still had a few thousand left. I did do a great deal of highway driving while I had it. But was amazed that they were still in great shape. Guess it just depends on driving style.

Like I used to tell my customers, they only wear when you push the pedal..... Had one customer that could burn the front and rear brakes on a 1 ton van down to the metal in 12,000 miles.....twice

      Yeah, I typically get at least 80k from front pads too. I tend to drive on the throttle and leave a large gap from the vehicle in front. The 3 foot behind tailgaters are not only annoying and dangerous, they cost themselves money by having to dab their brake pedals constantly.

    The NY State Inspection seems like a pretty simple affair compared to the UK's MOT Test. You should check the comprehensive list of vehicle safety and emissions items that are checked. It was introduced in 1960 by the then Ministry of Transport (hence MOT) for vehicles over 10 years old, reduced to 3 years old in 1967. Certificates are now issued by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), but it is still called the MOT Test. Since 2012, the test certificate also lists the vehicle's recent mileage history from previous certificates on the DVSA database. "Classic" cars, first registered more than 40 years ago are exempt as are vehicles on some of the small islands where there is no convenient connection to larger islands or the mainland. At the other extreme, ambulances, taxis and and vehicles with more than eight passenger seats are tested annually from new. Goods vehicles have their own test requirements. (By the way, I'm a civil engineer not a vehicle mechanic, so apologies for any glaring inaccuracies).

    This control arm replacement looked much more difficult for the DIYer than other replacements we've seen on this channel. If you can't just remove the old one, swap in the new one, without using special tools I'm out! I just bought the Astro 65SL light, brake piston compressor & hooks and the extreme purple stuff for Christmas. That special tool to pull that sleeve off is out of my wheelhouse so this job would have went to my local Napa Auto care center. Did I mention I just sent my car back to them for my 6th comeback this year alone? Seems they never can fix it right the first time ever time like SMA!

    A dramatic snow day today eh? Got to dr real early between the plows and the patients snow and slush and snow so I did parkbrake drifting for about 15min solid. It was so picture perfect all the real sticky white snow on all the trees. I drove to walmart and back an hour each way. Just to look at the total whiteness of it all. it was real scary even with the best snow tires.

    A triangle is scalene if all of its three sides are different (in which case, the three angles are also different). If two of its sides are equal, a triangle is called isosceles. A triangle with all three equal sides is called: Equilateral.

    Eric: What's you opinion of Chinese brake parts? Some years back, I was stuck with my car on jack stands and could only find Chinese rotors. A few months later I had chatter, and vibration. Next time I shopped around, and got Canadian rotors and they lasted the life of the car. What's a guy to do?

    Do most New Yorkers keep two sets of wheels with winter and summer tires instead of switching tires on and off?

    • @charlesputt8588
      @charlesputt8588 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    seems like ceramic is all the rage today in brake pads. Do you put ceramics on these vehicles or what decides what composition you use? Besides dust, semi metallic seem to be the way to go but I hear they are noisy. What is your experience with semi metallic? Are they as noisy as all the websites that compare pads say''?

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use oem compound, if it came with semi metallic, it gets those, if it comes with ceramic it gets them

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Semi metallics are noisy, dusty, and very hard on rotors and wears em down quickly. They bite hard though and are cheap. I go with ceramics exclusively now on my cars. Quiet, very minimal dust, last a long time, easy on rotors. They don't bite quite as hard and are more expensive. I hate the look of dusty wheels so that alone is worth the extra cost to me.
