Aside from the artwork being based off the cartoons (as I might've mentioned in a previous comment), there were three releases: 1.) Tengen licensed, 2.) Tengen unlicensed, 3.) Namco official. There's very little difference in the actual gameplay (maybe AI patterns). Ms. Pac-Man, now that's different entirely.
This is my favorite version of PacMan. It has a good pace and smooth feel to it due to the NES capabilities, but still retains that great arcade style.
Why does it seem almost every version of Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man besides the arcade is missing the... don't know how to word it, the "eyes tip-off"? In the arcade, the ghosts' eyes point in the direction they're about to turn just a split second before they turn, giving you a quick hint as to where they're going and helping you avoid being trapped... once you notice it, it's soooo much harder to play without it.
I wonder where they got the black cartridge ... the version I have is gray and has the Nintendo seal. Same game, though, and it IS a good one :) I am amused by the fact that the artwork on the cartridge matches the animated series from the 1980s.
You're actually quite good at Pacman, am I sensing a misspent youth? By the way, I watched this in 1080P, the only way to truly appreciate the graphics :D
Lol just seen this version at my local thrift store for 1.91 almost got it but bought "Tetris" "metroid" and " paper boy" instead! All for a 1.91 each!
I am getting a fever. What kind of fever you ask? Why PacMan fever of cours. A great review for an awsome game. The PacMan and Ghost on the Nintendo game cartrage was based on the Hanna Barbera animated series of the same name.
Mark, tut tut tut, still reffering to Space Gar, I see. "Doesn't need a decoder ring or anything, that's what I call presentation". Great review and I do love Pac-Man. You know, I'm in the UK and when I went on holiday (still in the UK) at the hotel they had an ORIGINAL PAC-MAN MACHINE. The tabletop version. Although it's called Puck-man. Over here the original game on its original release was called Puck-Man and the ghosts were called Funditsu and stuff. Still a classic for 20p a go.
This the exact version that's available on Wii Virtual Console for $5. I personally liked it do to the Gamecube Analog stick works perfect for Pac-Man.
Correct. The NES was capable of handling the Ms. Pac-Man that you speak of. So much so, IT EXISTS. (And, I hope it plays perfectly alike to the Sega version.) Being Tengen, it might be a bit hard to find. (...outside of E-Bay.)
I dunno why but I read this as Pac Mam first. XD I played this at a Friends House - we let Super Mario Bros 3 lying aside when his dad brought home this.
@bartsimpson83 Ms Pac-Man was also for the 2600 and that game was actually quality. So yes, it would have been much better if they had not rushed it out.
My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think Pac-man is based on a Japanese story, where Pac-man is a super hero, protecting children from the ghosts under the bed.
It's well known at this point that Atari released Pac-Man in an alpha state to get it out quickly, but would the finished version really have been that much better? The 2600 simply was not capable of properly doing this game so anything they released would have looked terrible in comparison to the original arcade game. Gamers back then apparently realized this because despite it's flaws, Pac-Man was still one of the best selling 2600 games, believe it or not.
Well if the license plates should all have names of Atari games it would be a pretty good way to cut down on pollution. Think about it... Each plate has to be unique meaning there could only be 544 cars in Pennsylvania.
Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde are NOT ghosts. Original arcade game monitor bezel refers to them as MONSTERS. Same goes for the Ms. Pacman arcade game. Second intermission, flesh colored feet? The 2600 version flickered so damn bad with practically no color change, Atari's marketing department purposely referred to them as ghosts on the packaging and instructions to try and save some face. That's where the whole ghost thing started and it just kind of stuck.
like most nes games with weird goals and enemies and whatnot (i.e. pacman) i think someone just went on an acid trip and was like "woahhhh, that would be cool in a video game.
This version is available on Nintendo eShop.
6 Whole Minutes of Pac Man Goodness from Classic Game Room HD? What could be better than that? 5 Stars All the Way man!
That beat at the end of the review was so dope, even Pac Man had to dance.
i remember playing this version waaaaay back in the day. memories.
This is my favorite version of PacMan. It has a good pace and smooth feel to it due to the NES capabilities, but still retains that great arcade style.
Mark's right, this version starts off a lot easier then the arcade original.
There was a gray cart too for the NES but they are much tougher to find. Cool review!
You want PAC-MAN with flamethrowers? Play ALIEN for the Atari 2600.
So this is the Tengen version, isn't there a pure Namco version too? in a grey cartridge
Yeah. I used to have it.
+TheMamaluigi300 is the quality any better or is it the exact same game
Namco is the way to go. No reason to buy unlicensed crap.
Unless it's Ms. Pacman, then the unlicensed game is the superior version
Tengen games were actually pretty solid. And Pac-Man Tengen and Namco versions are the same, except the title screen.
It's about time this review came out
Mark, What is that music at the end that sounds like Disco Inferno? It's sounds Freakin' awesome.
Why does it seem almost every version of Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man besides the arcade is missing the... don't know how to word it, the "eyes tip-off"? @duhmez Thah was my favourite AV Cable review EVORZ!
Man this is the most classic of the classic of the most classic games ever made. And yes, I am aware i said most 2 times. That's how classic it is! :D
I was just watching your older vids when your had Dave working with you. Do you still keep in touch? :)
CGR reviews and Nintendo game. This is madness!
@HiveDes ita all about knowing where the ghosts are gonna go and using the powerpallents at the right time, but i like digdug better somehow
my aunt be beat this exact version of Pac Man like 10 times...man, this brings back memories
The Nes port was the same as the Japanese Famicom port which was released in 1983. Only two years after the 2600 port.
Yes, except for the ghosts' name...
Actually 1984.
Awesome review, as always. Keep up the good work CGR though your reviews keep sending me to ebay and leaving me broke.
This is one of 4 games I had on the Coleco vision. I used to spend hours design mazes!!!
you are SO FREAGIN GOOD O_O
lol, its awsome how many times you can review the game and it is still entertaining
If I ever feel down, I can just tell myself 'Classic Game Room, is still my friend in Pennsylvania' and be cheered up instantly
You should review PACMAN Championship Edition for the XBLA.
I wonder where they got the black cartridge ... the version I have is gray and has the Nintendo seal. Same game, though, and it IS a good one :)
I am amused by the fact that the artwork on the cartridge matches the animated series from the 1980s.
I have a Gameboy Port of Pac Man, but I think the screen scrolls.
did you ever play pacman for the playstation 2
Well this one wasnt made by namco and it wasnt licensed by nintendo. You of course know that but please review the namco one on the nes.
LOL I recall renting this game for my Nes when i was little! Oh man how the time go by.
You're actually quite good at Pacman, am I sensing a misspent youth?
By the way, I watched this in 1080P, the only way to truly appreciate the graphics :D
favorite version of PAC-MAN. I had it as a kid. Have it on the WII's VC AND have a tattoo of him
Lol just seen this version at my local thrift store for 1.91 almost got it but bought "Tetris" "metroid" and " paper boy" instead! All for a 1.91 each!
review the neogeo pocket version of pacman
Do you have some kind of personal goal that involves reviewing every port of Pac Man known to man kind or something?
there is an nes version of ms pacman in fact the sega version is a port of the nes version
This is the version that you can get on Wii Virtual Console, except it says Namco not Tengen. Great version and very fun!
The artwork reminds me of the Pac-Man animated show from Saturday Mornings way back when.
The picture, It was the cartoon version. I used to watch that all the time, which came on U.S.A. network. Love the cartoon.
I am getting a fever. What kind of fever you ask? Why PacMan fever of cours. A great review for an awsome game. The PacMan and Ghost on the Nintendo game cartrage was based on the Hanna Barbera animated series of the same name.
'Caspers Brother?'
*laughs and chokes on drink*
Mark, tut tut tut, still reffering to Space Gar, I see. "Doesn't need a decoder ring or anything, that's what I call presentation".

I didn’t get to play Pac-Man on console in the nes Nintendo built in
heeeeeeey thats the Tengen copy of the game, do they have any difference than the ones made by nintendo.
This the exact version that's available on Wii Virtual Console for $5. I personally liked it do to the Gamecube Analog stick works perfect for Pac-Man.
I play this version on PC using Jnes emulator, which runs flawlessly in wine.
Maybe it's stupid because it's an NES game, but where did HD go?
i had this game for the nes growing up
Correct. The NES was capable of handling the Ms. Pac-Man that you speak of. So much so, IT EXISTS. (And, I hope it plays perfectly alike to the Sega version.) Being Tengen, it might be a bit hard to find. (...outside of E-Bay.)
mark did you cut your death out at 1:17
Pennsylvania is called the keystone state because it is the "keystone" of the states on the eastern seaboard.
"Puts those ghosts on 'Ho Road'"
Haha I'm still laughing from that.
Mark, I know you too much.... I KNEW you were going to say flamethrowers for what this game needs!
Wait, the Pac-man & Ghosts are the ones from the Hanna-Barberra cartoon of Pac-Man.
I dunno why but I read this as Pac Mam first. XD
I played this at a Friends House - we let Super Mario Bros 3 lying aside when his dad brought home this.
Ah... I never forget my first NES game, which is Pac-Man.
a licensed version exist on NES as well, but the Tengen version is better. I believe the Wii Virtual Console has the other version on it.
I had this on the GBA =D I still have it, I'll play it on my DS sometimes =P
I also wonder what the died to make them ghosts.
@bartsimpson83 Ms Pac-Man was also for the 2600 and that game was actually quality. So yes, it would have been much better if they had not rushed it out.
Yes, since I posted that comment I've seen it at the retro video-games store. But I am keeping my current copy anyway :-)
My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think Pac-man is based on a Japanese story, where Pac-man is a super hero, protecting children from the ghosts under the bed.
pac man+ NES advantage= best game ever
anyone think pac-man's animation looks weird on the NES?
yes, but I'm very high, so...
CultOfWeirdness whut?
+greenknight9000 HES FUCKING HIGH DUMBASS!!!!!!!!
Robert Tyler YES I KNOW! BUT IT'S A WEIRD COMMENT ANYWAY
looks fine....the only thing that looks weird is the fruit

I chuckled at the license plate part.
DUDE, I GUESSED FLAMETHROWER. I'M SERIOUS. i watch enough of your videos to know that it was going to be a flame thrower.
if you seen pac man adventurs3 for the ps2 ,game cube or xbox, it tells you and shows you were there made
Well if the license plates should all have names of Atari games it would be a pretty good way to cut down on pollution. Think about it... Each plate has to be unique meaning there could only be 544 cars in Pennsylvania.

That's where the whole ghost thing started and it just kind of stuck.
mmmmmmmmmmmm more nes stuff, keep it coming.
This was my first version of pacman, and an excellent version to "cut my teeth" on because of the slower start.
I think I heard pretty much the same thing when I first looked into pac man.
@chupapicosconchetuma then again he clearly said that this version starts off slow in the earlier levels and gets faster.
This game, with the NES Advantage, is capable of wasting more of my time than most of the games being made today.
Congratulations, someone who said first, and actually was first.
just wait till video processes
Am I the only one who realizes that it's funny how this game is not listed but it sold so many copies.
wow on the NES too -____-
I bought the famicom version of pac man just recently and now i can play it athome on the famicom or on the go on the game axe color🤣
The best version for me would be Mrs. Pacman for the SNES, but thats just me.
We have a league of miss pacman on our game nights ,pacman must be the best game in our time ohhh apart from combat on the atari :)
Blinky
Pinky
Inky
CLYDE
I always thought that was random yet funny who ever came up with the names is a genius

REVIEW RED STEEL 2.
2:40, AAAAHAHAHA, I KNEW he was going to say "flamethrower" hahaha, oh Mark, you are hilariously predictable when it comes to flamethrowers. hahaha
2:41, I KNEW he would say that.
Best ending since the Last Starfighter...
Yeah, I never really could get into it myself...
i played this version as a kid
I bet back in the day, you had to fork out some bucks for this game.
I'm waiting 20 years, so I can afford MW2.
I hope my 360 holds out D:
I KNEW HE WAS GONNA SAY FLAMETHROWERS!
I have the grey cartridge version of this and it keeps gltching
play ms. pacman for the nes
The game isn't missing flamethrowers, but it is missing being able to burn people with monsters and cut them in half.
I didn't know there was different versions of Pac Man. It always looks the same.
When you asked what this game needed, I already knew
like most nes games with weird goals and enemies and whatnot (i.e. pacman) i think someone just went on an acid trip and was like "woahhhh, that would be cool in a video game.
Pros: better than the 2600.
Cons: less amount of dots than the original arcade/5200.
Still a good game.
Game label art does look like the 1980's cartoon Pac-Man.
