My father collected sports cards and one of the stores he went to had a game room with Mario bros my brother and I loved to go with we would grab a handful of quarters and have a great time! They had Rush 'n' attack so I split my time with that too
Dude I used to play this on my Atari 2600 also. Couldn't believe it!! Totally got past level 99. Without the fireballs of course. Just saying. Thanks for the review, Mark.
Now THIS is gameplay! Some people want their games to be story-driven and just pushing a button while the character onscreen does all the work, but to me a real videogame will test your skill and make you cry and sweat pools of blood because few things in life are more satisfying than beating a legitimately challenging videogame :D
To Mark and/or who ever edits these videos: When taking 60i footage and taking it down to 30p, blend the frames so both are there. You'll get some motion blur, but it'll allow the deinterlaced footage to look at least somewhat similar to the interlaced footage. Not that skating Mario isn't fun to watch.
The new intergalactic space arcade is great, but now you look this rich dude, before I could be like, I could do this in my house too you know, now I'm like damn look at the el camino, and he actually has place to play those things!!!!!! love your show man!
I love this game. Played it on the C64. Even back then Nintendo games were among my favorites although I had no idea who made the games. BTW this game was an influence for Smash Bros (look at how you reenter after losing a life) and New Super Mario Bros; You can either play cooperatively or screw each other over.
I loved this game. I also miss the days before Street Fighter, when adding "Super" to a title meant it was a completely different game, not a slightly augmented version of the previous game.
Nintendo has kept this game alive by having it as a bonus on some of their first party Mario (and Yoshi) titled GBA carts. Cool game. Simple yet addictive formula. Awesome El Camino btw. Mark be livin it up. I see ya, pimpin!
Well if we're getting that far into it... That said, there's just something about a blurry direct capture that just makes a classic game video feel more legit than emulation footage.
I've been waiting for this review for years! He's reviewed like a half dozen versions but finally he's doing the one I grew up playing! I LOVE this version! I rock the shit out of this game. I still play it with some of my buddies from time to time. I still have my NES hooked up so sometimes we switch the old console on and have some fun. We also play Bubble Bobble a LOT. That game is seventeen different kinds of awesome.
They made a remake of this along with super mario world on the GBA. That was the first time I played both of those games, I barely looked away from the screen. I probably played this as much as super mario world, and I never got past world 3 in that game.
As someone who started out on the 5200, I always found the 2600 joystick to be stiff and hard to use. I probably went through 20 5200 joysticks as a kid, so clearly it was a disaster, but when it worked, I really liked it.
I loved doing this against a friend on... Mario 3? I'm not sure which one. The only where when it was your turn you could choose to go to where your friend was and battle him Mario Bro style.
I think the best version of this game is on the Mario Advance series for GBA for one simple reason. You can change the direction of your jump in mid-air. Huge advantage.
Have you ever played Super Mario Brothers 3 with multiplayer? When it's one player's turn they can land on the same place as another player and it enters them in a minigame that IS Mario Brothers with slightly better graphics, and they compete for stealing each other's power-ups or the ability to play a level. It was extremely cool, I hope they bring something similar back! (I've also played this or the Mario Bros on NES, Arcade, Atari, GB and VC)
Super Mario Brothers 3 has Mario Brothers in it! It'd be kind of sweet to see competitive Mario Brothers mini games happen between levels in current Mario games again like New Super Mario or 3D world.
Holy shit man, congrats!!! I wonder Mark, are you really making a living out of this? You deserve it man, all the giggles and laughs i get from watching this show. XD
Mark you should really play one of the Super Mario Advance games. There's four of them and each one has an updated version or Mario Bros along with a four player version. It's probably the best version (boy I said version a lot).
Can you review this game for the Atari XEGS, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, the Gameboy advance versions, and the arcade version? And maybe even the version in Animal Crossing? My life isn't really complete until you do them all.
I dunno'... I'm picky about my Mario Bros. I really miss the icicles, though I suppose a lot of versions didn't have those. The fireballs in this version more than make up for that difficulty, though, and not in a good way. In the arcade, they're big and bright and give a fair bit of warning before coming out. Here, you get almost no warning and they're ridiculously tiny and the green one blends in too much with the background and I can't tell you how many times a green fireball has killed me because I didn't notice it until it was right on top of me, and it just feels cheap =/
I've got four versions for GBA. They're on all the carts in the Super Mario Advance series. I forgot it was out for e-Reader. I want to get one of those. I'd really like to get the SMB cards. There are new levels in there. I want to play those so badly. There's also a Mario Party game. It's an actual board game with minigames. It looks interesting. But anyway, that's how you do it. Just find any SMA cart. It's on all of them.
Well, the thing is, Mark would be fine reviewing it his own way. But TF2 is one of those games that has so much content that it's a little hard to review it as a whole. Anywho, if he is, can't wait for it!
Hey Mark, I had this game originally. I think you are making a mistake in play. You should be able to underbump those fireballs. Just like the turtles crab, etc. I could be wrong though. Great review for a great game.
The coins look realistic in this game. So metallic. 1:35
This was my first NES game. Awesome stuff, CGR!
I used to play this game in arcade form at my local supermarket back in the 80's when I was a little kid. One of my all time favorites.
We all need more CGR... EDF EDF EDF ...
That small bonus stage really required some fast and steady fingers!
My father and I used to play Mario Bros. on the NES and later on the Wii (as a downloaded game). Great memories.
Now THIS is gameplay! Some people want their games to be story-driven and just pushing a button while the character onscreen does all the work, but to me a real videogame will test your skill and make you cry and sweat pools of blood because few things in life are more satisfying than beating a legitimately challenging videogame :D
I grew up with the one's on the Super Mario advanced series, that version there had backgrounds and two pow blocks.
BMO Not to mention the GBA version(s) of the game were much better than the NES version as far as controls were concerned.
This is as classic as it gets
It's no classic game room review without mark having a game over at the end!
that was so painful at the end. I am so old, thanks for reminding me Mark!

Thank god you reviewed this game. I've been seeing it on the shelf at Kay Bee Toys and was wondering if it was any good.
The new intergalactic space arcade is great, but now you look this rich dude, before I could be like, I could do this in my house too you know, now I'm like damn look at the el camino, and he actually has place to play those things!!!!!! love your show man!
Seems really hard to get an el camino into space!
Sarahsaurus Rawr If you only believe and clap your hands...
It was a good conversion of the arcade game, but the german version for the nes is even better😁
I remember playing this arcade game at my dentist in the late 80's or maybe it was VERY early 90s.
i played the super nintendo version of this game, i have no idea what it was called but i loved it, it was colourful and the music was awesome
Mark you should review the one that came with all the "Mario Advance" games for the GBA. I loved it!
I have original Mario Bros EEC cartridge here. Still works like a charm on my NES.
3:30 thanks to those tips, not only did i make it past the first phase, i made it to phase 10! :)
3:36 several tweaks were made to the pal version to make it easier, one of which was the ability to change direction after you jump. :P
This is the most underrated game...ever...
The guy who sendt this game is from Brooklyn? That is where Mario and Luigi live!
I love this game. Played it on the C64. Even back then Nintendo games were among my favorites although I had no idea who made the games.
BTW this game was an influence for Smash Bros (look at how you reenter after losing a life) and New Super Mario Bros; You can either play cooperatively or screw each other over.
I really liked this game. back when Mario and Luigi were twins
I used to have so much fun with the GBA version of this. Never really got into the NES version after that.
My favorite video game reviewer ! I hope one day he returns from Planet X .
Awesome... So much nostalgia here, great review as always
I was just talking about this on the many systems (coleco version my favorite). Awesome elCamino by the way :)
One of my favorite arcade classics
I remember playing this a bit on my copy of Allstars on the snes.
I loved this game. I also miss the days before Street Fighter, when adding "Super" to a title meant it was a completely different game, not a slightly augmented version of the previous game.

Crabs have one eye and one claw in this version. Check out the arcade or c64 version
I've been waiting for this review for years! He's reviewed like a half dozen versions but finally he's doing the one I grew up playing! I LOVE this version! I rock the shit out of this game. We also play Bubble Bobble a LOT. That game is seventeen different kinds of awesome.
I want Mario Clash in 3DS VC. A VB VC would be perfect.
I want a 3DS online remake of this game personally along the lines of the "Super Mario Advance" one, but with new levels, enemies, and VS mode stuff.
The new CGR set is AMAZING!
Love the arcade and the El Camino, you have a nice setup there!
They made a remake of this along with super mario world on the GBA. That was the first time I played both of those games, I barely looked away from the screen. I probably played this as much as super mario world, and I never got past world 3 in that game.
I love the new Space Arcade!
I LOVE CGR!!!
The El Camino just made my day. Aw yes.
The El Camino looks awesome in the new Intergalactic Space Arcade!
I'm sure this was on one of the GBA games I had while growing up. I played it quite a lot too
I still remember the time when those turtles (they were different from Koopas) cannot be stomped...
the arcade's now adays, had the best quality in game graphics even though they were 8-bit renditions to the old atari!! it's still holds up though XD
As someone who started out on the 5200, I always found the 2600 joystick to be stiff and hard to use. I probably went through 20 5200 joysticks as a kid, so clearly it was a disaster, but when it worked, I really liked it.
This was the reason I bought my NES, and it also got me interested in game collecting!
The Super Mario Advance 3 version of Mario Bros. is awesome. Just throwing it out there.
I've always loved playing it in 2-player mode in Super Mario Bros 3 from Super Mario All Stars on the SNES lol
Have you ever played Super Mario Brothers 3 with multiplayer? When it's one player's turn they can land on the same place as another player and it enters them in a minigame that IS Mario Brothers with slightly better graphics, and they compete for stealing each other's power-ups or the ability to play a level. (I've also played this or the Mario Bros on NES, Arcade, Atari, GB and VC)
I love Mario Clash the spiritual follow up to this, sadly only on the VirtualBoy, and hopefully someday on the WiiO(cculus)'s virtual console.
This was the first VC game I bought on the Wii as soon as it became available. :)
This game was very fun in both Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario Bros Advance
Super Mario Brothers 3 has Mario Brothers in it! It'd be kind of sweet to see competitive Mario Brothers mini games happen between levels in current Mario games again like New Super Mario or 3D world.
Moving on up Mark... Congrats!
I'm so glad they revised this game in 93, I wish it had came state side though.
The best console version of this would be the polished version on GBA if you'd ask me. I think it was a bonus game on the Super Mario World cartidge.
Failed to mention what the difference is between Game A and Game B
This is my most favorite version of this game.
Holy shit man, congrats!!! I wonder Mark, are you really making a living out of this? You deserve it man, all the giggles and laughs i get from watching this show. XD
I'm ready for a tour of the new and improved intergalactic space arcade.
A CLASSIC game and review --- thanks.
the GBA version of this game that came on nearly every mario game is the best version of this game, used to play it a lot
Mark, do you let people onto the Intergalactic Space Arcade and have them play the best games you have to offer? 'Cause... that'd be awesome!
Well if that's how it is then on the 25th of September could I have a review of Manic Miner RPG Edition for the Wonderswan/Gamecom/Leapster
The 2010 version is a bit more easy control, the enemies are more arcade like and has enemy presentation
Mark you should really play one of the Super Mario Advance games. There's four of them and each one has an updated version or Mario Bros along with a four player version. It's probably the best version (boy I said version a lot).
Doesn't the NES version lack the icicles from the arcade that fall down? I think the only home version that had it was the Commodore 64.
Yes, the NES doesn't have the icicles, nor do they have the invisible floors for the later "test your skill" levels
i use to have this game.. ahhh i want it now!
I was the first to say I love his reviews :)
You have a good day as well, sir.
Can we have a tour of the intergalactic space arcade?!
mark should do a tour of the new death star size intergalactic space arcade.
Can you review this game for the Atari XEGS, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, the Gameboy advance versions, and the arcade version? And maybe even the version in Animal Crossing? My life isn't really complete until you do them all.

Your El Camino is so nice!
I was first introduced to it on Commodore 64!
Are you gonna do Wrecking Crew and Mario's Cement Factory, those are considered sequels to this
its also a bonus level on Super Mario Bros. 3
i want a Tour video of the intergalactic Space Arcade!
oh my god somebody was kept using the koopa troppa sprites and purpoulsy thinking those fire flies and crabs spritwes are missing wellp that sucked
El camino is the only vehicle authorized to travel between Earth and The Intergalactic Space Arcade
I've got four versions for GBA. They're on all the carts in the Super Mario Advance series. I forgot it was out for e-Reader. I want to get one of those. I'd really like to get the SMB cards. My dad owns the original Arcade cabinet. Whenever I visit him, I'd play the sh*t outta it.
Hey CGR, i'd love to see an OUYA review from you guys!
Oh god! You did it! You finally did it! YEAH!
It's not hard to review, it's a game like any other.
Plus, he mentioned that he would do a review of it in a video a while back.
I seriousely didnt know there was a Mario Bros game on NES besides in SMB3
Well, the thing is, Mark would be fine reviewing it his own way. But TF2 is one of those games that has so much content that it's a little hard to review it as a whole. Anywho, if he is, can't wait for it!
I had this on the gameboy advanced, the chip also had super Mario bros 2
Probably my 3rd favorite Mario game!
Mark, have you played the newer ports of Mario Bros on the Super Mario Advance games on GBA?
I like this game's music, even though there's almost none of it to speak of.
Hey Mark, I had this game originally. I think you are making a mistake in play. You should be able to underbump those fireballs. Just like the turtles crab, etc.
I could be wrong though. Great review for a great game.
I used to be too much good at playing this game but over a period of time I forgot it
