Thanks for your kind comments. I'm still surprised by the love this game received. Of the many games I worked on at Rare, it's the only one for which I received personal fan mail. That makes it very special to me.
First off, I know this is a reply to a 10 year old comment but I gotta take a chance when I can do something like this...Captain Skyhawk was one of my very favorite games growing up and I just wanted to say thank you for the work you put in on it.
@@TKuja1 I know just how you feel lol, it took me forever to beat Captain Skyhawk and I know this sounds corny but in this case the journey was even better than the destination I felt like that game was ahead of its time with the isometric levels and the flight into the rotating station, not to mention I loved the soundtrack. Milton Bradley mustve had some great sound engineers because even Marble Madness's soundtrack was awesome
No way. Captain Skyhawk was not too ambitious, it's one of the most underrated and unsung games that came out on the NES. This was the first game that really got me hooked on the NES when I was little. Still to this day it's at the top of my list of favorite NES titles. If you truly worked on the game sir I just would like to thank you for opening my eyes to the world of gaming at such a young age. Everyone starts somewhere, and I started with Captain Skyhawk.
I played this game so much as a kid. You had a few different things to manage all at once like timing your drops, your height and avoiding the walls. I love this game so much.
I bought this for my girl friend this (it was in a bag of games, for like $5). It's not bad, but one thing I noticed, is that the ship is always falling so you have to "pull up" constantly or you'll hit something.
This was the first game I ever beat! I still have it somewhere. If you hold down the select button while moving left, or right, the plane will do a barrel roll.
@region1111 i think you mean shmups so i'd go for 1942, vertical, while u.n. squadron horizontal. these are some other examples: recca, pretty wierd, love it, lifeforce, obviously gradius, salamander, twin cobra (TOAPLAN!!), crisis force and there's still a lot. can't reaally decide
Thanks for the review. This was the first game I made during my time at Rare. Looking back, you're dead right. It was too ambitious. I should have focussed more on making one part of it awesome instead of stretching myself so thin!
Big thumbs up for 3:17 Love these reviews...keep 'em coming! p.s.: would love to see some more SNES games reviewed. Do Secret of Mana please. One of my alltime favorites. Worth it for the epic music alone.
I remember hanging out at KayBee toys one day looking at Nintendo games. This kid had just bought Captain Skyhawk for like $50 and he came in that day and it had been marked down to $10. He was so shocked I remember it to this day. I bought Dungeon Magic from that store for $10. I never could figure out how the magic system worked exactly,
A lot of people might ignore this one because it was published by Milton Bradley, but the game was actually designed by Rare. It's a good game that should be part of everyone's NES collection.
Pretty neat looking shmup on the NES. You should review HELLFIRE on the Sega Megadrive; it's an unique shmup made by Toaplan, it's hard as nails and the music is just flat out awesome.
Sill got my ORIGINAL copy from '89... Great review as always MARK! It had good music, smooth anims, and didn't try to do too much but instead made a simple game fun for the typical shmup fan but mixed it up with top-gun style crap too but It's not quite crap!!! It's just unknown! Check it out!
i got this game for Christmas in 1991! my crazy aunt got it for me. shes the one that would always buy us games, but lame ones that she probably got for ten bucks. like Solar Jet Man, or Tetris 2
Thank you Captain Skyhawk for letting my mom hear her young son swear for the 1st time. Fucking SPACE DOCK!! sometimes even when you got it in the damn thing you'd still blow up!!
That's an NES game?? Wow. Looks more like an NES game shacked up with a Sega Genesis. I mean, look at all the stuff this one game was able to fit in: shifting rainbow patterns, isometric stages, Top Gun-esque flight stages, even those spinning letters and circles on the high score screen. I'm honestly surprised this game never got more attention during the NES era. This game looks so cool! Hopefully it'll someday become available to the public again on the Virtual Console.
Dude, it's awesome exactly because it's strange.... why bother with star fox? you can use a F14!! great reviews, getting to know your channel today, already lost a few hours in youtube, thanks! XD
I didn't kill the boss and I get to reach him, tho ... he a huge red space station with lots of missiles launcher as his wings. so hard, the missiles come from below, left, right, above, top right, top left, bottom right and left... too hard to avoid them in space.
This and some other flying/racing games are proof that the NES had 3D capabilities and that not all of it's games were 2D side-scrollers. A lot of people thought that the Sega Genesis and the SNES were the first consoles to have 3D capability. lol
This game actually looks WAY better than I remember it. I hope this finds it's way into Nintendo Online's classic library. But it's Rare and Microsoft owns them now, right? So probably not. :\

@@shinjiblack9460 thank you! It really means a lot that people still fondly remember my old games. Maybe I’ll get to release something new someday!
i loved this game i played the hell out of it, i never did get to the final boss though haha

From the company that brought you golden eye, perfect dark, and donkey Kong... Rare
Milton Bradley published it.
And Cobra Triangle
And killer instinct!
I absolutely loved this game when I was a kid!
This game... so much memories... *a tear drops.
I played this game so much as a kid. You had a few different things to manage all at once like timing your drops, your height and avoiding the walls. I love this game so much.
I loved this game as a kid. This was the game that justified the use of the NES advantage.
My favorite game of all time.
This game is dope
i miss playingthis game very much
Mark you are the fine wine of TH-cam Video game reviewers!
I remember playing this game when I was 13 or so ,it was nice seeing parts I never got to see as a kid,had to return it to the video store.
i was about 11 ,so easy to complete did it several times lol
This was the best game. I wish I could buy it now even though it is old school. Thanks for bringing us down memory lane!
I remember playing that game on acid back in the day...
awesome vid as usual gamester! Yeah the new intro song fits well... just needs to get mastered a bit and you're golden.

man i remember spending so much time on this game when i was a little kid. fond memories :D
lol at 1:35 its the 2 meter wide exhaust port of the death star good thing you mentioned star wars a few seconds ago
Intro music for this game is so boss. Game is pretty nifty as well.
This was on of my favorites as a kid. I bought it off ebay last year and time hasn't been kind to it.
It was still awesome back in the day though.
@Sye909 I know that, but i kinda meant an iconic tune that plays during the game in general, i will admit though the boss music is cool.
Simply AWESOME!!! Still got my orig from back in the day and it still rocks ass! Love it...
Big thumbs up for 3:17

yeah good job Gunn great challenging game used to play a lot. was only 1 of 3 NES games i had, along with super mario bros 3 and the untouchables

@y2k4ever1 It does during boss fights and at the end of missions :P ?
This was SUCH a cool game!
And You guys reviewing it is cool too!
I'm definatley naming my kid Captian Skyhawk
"hey captain skyhawk, time for dinner"
One of my favorites as a kid
I remember lending this game to a kid a knew and never saw it again! I was so sad and mad about it for years XD

the plane looks extremely realistic for a nes game
@TheW0rldsGame Actually good. tho when u first try to play nes games it is tough to insert carts
I like the nod to Frontier : Elite 2 during the docking scenes :P

The hit detection looks alittle off, but besides that, pretty cool
can anyone explain what the secret weapon does? I still have this game and never figured out how to use it.
Why do the people who suck at gaming have the biggest gaming channels on TH-cam?
I got this game for Christmas when I was a kid...played the crap outta it
you guys should review The Punisher for N64 or PS2
Impressive visuals for the time
this is a very great game and i still have it for my nes
u should review that game paperboy
This looks pretty cool, Might check it out

This game was surprisingly fun back in the day. It looked like some cheap Hi-Tech Expressions game, but turned out to be ok.
The terrain in the first part is pretty much exactly the terrain of SimCity 2000 except green.
That highscore screen is sweeeet
lol when i toke the mouse arrow it said "captain s"........avgn?
Holy shit i remember this one. Yup looks like Zaxxon butCap'n skyhawk was BEAST back in the day
Great review, looks good for its time
CG Arrrrrrr! :)
Cool looking game, I'll have to hunt this one down.
A cool game yes but damn is it difficult!
@3L3CTR0static It was true. I only beat this game twice, both before I turned 7, and only if I wore the motorcycle helmet.
I remember playing this!
Rick Astley was right on the bbc the 80's are comeing back
omfg
Hyperkin to launch 'RetroN 3' console m8 why did u not tell us about it at E3 it looks so cool lol
One of the best games ever on NES.
The 3D terrain segments make me think that the Marble Madness civilization advanced technologically and then did something to offend Captain Skyhawk.
Dude, it's awesome exactly because it's strange....
why bother with star fox? you can use a F14!!
great reviews, getting to know your channel today, already lost a few hours in youtube, thanks! XD
The aircraft F-14 it's so popular in games!!!
Shipwreck NEVER loses. Cpt. Skyhawk got Duke's when he went into one of his monthly comas.
OMG I stiil love to play this game after all these years!!!^_^
I found this on ebay, got it for only $3, can't wait to play it when it arrives ^^
I picked this up for 99 cents. And it's totally sweet.

This game is in my Top 50 games of all-time
It took me awhile but i finally beet the game, i wish it had music!
it was made by Rare(ware)? o_0
I couldn't beat this game when it came out, still nerf on the end boss. At 31, my dad is the only one to beat it haha.
that wasn't the delaware river. the water's blue! ooooh, too soon...
MORE NES REVIEWS!!!
YEAH NEW JERSEY!!!!!!!
Found this at a Pawn Shop when I got my NES, and I got it for only $0.10!
Yeah, those are some pretty good graphics for the NES.
i think daniel bryan played this game before and even if he didnt he probably would sit down and say YES YES YES while playing this game
This would make for great "3D classic" for the 3DS
This game actually looks WAY better than I remember it. I hope this finds it's way into Nintendo Online's classic library. But it's Rare and Microsoft owns them now, right? So probably not. :\
Rush'n'attack certainly came out of nowhere
@reloaderGUNS Roleplaying as a fighter pilot for the win.
The water level reminded me of Tiger Heli
I like to imagine Captain Skyhawk wooed Lady Jay for the keys to her F-14 Tomcat.
want to skip the ad's ? Just hit the refresh button at the top. :D
I had this game I freaking love it! fake 3d FTW!!!!!
GI I JOE! I love that show
Trust me that is not the Delaware River right below you, Its neither brown, nor has floating corpses!
Best graphics during its time.
