The original Resident Evil 2 was a survival horror masterpiece so my expectations were incredibly high for this game. I'm happy to say that it not only delivered but exceeded my expectations. Survival Horror is back and It's a good time to be a Resident Evil fan. Another great review, Joe! 👍
Agreed I am loving this game. It is everything I expected and more. Love the soundtrack swap for that old school RE2 nostalgia as well. Awesome review Joe.

I'm actually not totally for this RE2 remake. There's some issues that I have with it that just upset me. I think the RE1 remake on GameCube did a much better job of remaking the first game. I wished they followed the same route with RE2 on PS4.
@@rsuriyop Have to say I agree with you about the RE 1 Remake being a superior way to do a remake. I think that they sacrificed some level design/gameplay for that over the shoulder camera.
Finally started playing this game recently. This is my first experience with the RE series and omg I’m blown away with this game. The game looks and sounds phenomenal. I can understand the frustration with some remakes but from my perspective even though I’ve never played the OG game, I can tell that this is truly the definitive way to play the game. The game relies on atmosphere, something that some survival-horror games lack and instead rely on gimmicky jump scares. The incredibly eerie atmosphere is one of the most ominous and and horrifying experiences I’ve had in a game. This is the perfect way to spark interest in a franchise. Can’t wait to finish this and then play some of the other games in the series
Dude I grew up with resident evil 2 almost exclusively for most my childhood and idk where we got it from but it was the only game I had really and even tho the graphics and vocals were goofy sometimes but just how well it was executed the atmosphere and story were confusing later on but the ogs were slow grind confusing beat you down challenging to the point were id be pissed and when I made progress it kept me wanting more and watching it being twisted into the mindless action badass Rambo mf I like the realism the fact that if you save the game at a point and you might not have enough ammo or whatever needed to just barely survive the game left that up too you if you don't
I know this comment is 2 years old but incase you see this or anyone in the same boat as you sees this: The originals still hold up and I'd recommend emulating them so you can enjoy them as well. Yes it has tank controls but you will quickly pick them up. All the original Resident Evil games are worth playing, even RE2 if you've finished the remake. The original is different enough to warrant a playthrough. That's not even mentioning Resident Evil 4 which is hands down one of the best games ever made.
Capcom: Yay, I'm actually a good company again! EA Games: How could this be? No Microtransactions, Free DLC? wHaT dArK sOrCeRy Is ThIs!?!?!?!?!?! Bethesda: I'm still trying to fix my games but I still can't seem to figure it out? Eh, I'll let my fans fix it for me... Ubisoft: I keep releasing my games *half* finish. I don't feel like finishing my games. I'll finish them later. Konami: Nobody Cares about video gamz man! It's all about the Pachinko Machines man!!! Square Enix: ...I made The Quiet Man...
at this point, i wish Capcom would buy all of Konamis IPs. Konami isn't doing anything with them anyways........... and if they do, they'll just fuck it up like they always do lately. i could see Capcom giving some of their IPs proper justice.
maxi3g I had that happen to me on my first play through the other night (didn’t get a chance to buy it until this past Saturday). I survived, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t yell out and jump in my seat
Resident Evil 2 Remake's producer stated that Capcom will remake Resident Evil 3 if fans demand it. RE2 Remake is getting good reviews and sold 3 million units. There's no question a Resident Evil 3 remake would be in production as we speak.
Valentin Ionita there’s something wrong with you. RE2 remake was amazing and a RE3 remake would be even better. You sound like someone who’s never actually played the original games. Couldn't agree more. The RE franchise was dead to me in 2012 after RE6 then they kept dragging the series into the ground but now i'm so happy that they're making the games what they should be
AnthonyOMEGA - Quality of a game that has already been created but tweaked. How about something Original/New and not the same. Just like the movie reboots 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️.
Same here. Stupid game developers really think people enjoy spending an additional $1,000 on a game that cost them $60. A perfect example is ESO. The game has micro transactions that go up to $150. This is ridiculous.
They also want single player to be dead , so all games would have a pay to win system and the whole gaming world will be overrun by micro transactions 😈
Arcturus Mengsk I don’t mind the lack of a B campaign. Had Capcom simply done an HD version like Onimusha I would’ve been seriously disappointed. RE2 Remake has room for improvement but it was great never the less.
@Arcturus Mengsk their exist 4 scenario lol leon A claire B and reverse Claire A leon B all of the were worked from ground up not like shitty cut copy paste like dark soul remastered their is more content here than the original re2 game plus free dlc with new survivors stories all coming what else you want and their are few other mode like the original. Or you just wanted a shitty remastered like dark soul soul which improve little to no graphic and keep the fixed camera and use same copy paste cut-scenes ? The only negative i have for this remake or re-imagination is micro-transactions especially one for old soundtrack.
@Arcturus Mengsk they might have not listen to you but they sure listen to fans which include me along with many and they will all prefer this kind of rework over any hd remastered shit that add little to nothing over original and still ask for $60.
This is my first Resident Evil game. I bought it for $9.99 recently and WOW, just WOW. I slept on this game.... 10/10 so far. No complaints, just tension.
Haha same, just got around to it… always had this on my list but never had the time and with RE4 remake I got the PSplus deal they had on this and I’m so happy with it
@@TheRedRaven_ I think RE4 Remake is an overall better game because it stays consistently good. RE2 Remake falls off in the sewer section, then gets a bit better again in the hospital. So it's so consistently strong throughout. But goddamn I have to say, the police station section is just 11/10, better than any mission in RE4. I just want RE2 Remake, but the entire game only takes place in the police station.
I played the old games but bounced off the RE2 remake the first few times I tried to play it. It recently finally clicked for me though and it’s been amazing
The amount of times Angry Joe said Modern Gamers might not like this shows a genuine problem with modern game design. The point of a videogame is to challenge the players skills in certain categories. Resident Evil is challenging the players inventory management, keeping track of where they are, their mechanical ability to aim and more importantly keeping their cool in a tight situation. In my opinion the fact that Angry Joe had to mention "Modern gamers might not like this" 3-5 times just shows how badly videogames have descended to instant gratification instead of challenging yet rewarding gameplay.
True and they even moved the og mechanics to the "hardcore" mode lol I imagine if hardcore was in the "normal" mode people would be bitching amd moaning hard.
You don't even get instant gratification from modern games. You get it after a fucking month long grindfest. And online gaming is even worse. YOU NEED TO PAY ON SOMETHING YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR. IF I WANTED TO DO THAT I WOULD GO PLAY MONOPOLY.
Literally everything about that is wrong. Games are for passing time and for fun. Yes there are games that force you to do all that but that's when they're supposed to. None of those are even problematic and Joe is honestly overexaggerating the "MGMNLT"
@@ryanmirhosiny9966 idk man the old games weren't exactly what I call relaxing. Although I do see your point. But if you want a game you can relax to a high paced action game of horror game shoukdnt be you're go to.
I don’t consider “backtracking” as a bad thing. When you have clever map design like they did in RE2, it’s a blast. You’re in this massive building so it only makes sense to revisit areas constantly. You get familiar with the world.
In survival horror games too the added sense of growing familiarity breeding complacency and confidence, only to allow a clever game to throw a curveball in the story or how the environment changes over time, is a powerful tool to enhance the horror (see also Alien Isolation as a good example of backtracking).
So much this, it makes the game feel non-linear and really brings the game world to life. For me the backtracking in RE2 just made the R.P.D building feel more real.
I agree that backtracking is great, however, I'm not a huge fan of 4 slot less max inventory in hardcore compared to normal, especially with claire, with claire the more limited inventory is a pain and you almost always have to back to the magic box to store your stuff, quite tiresome sometimes and breaks the rythm of the game.
I'd say backtracking is more often than not a bad thing. It CAN be a good thing, but most often it's just a lazy way to make the playtime longer without actually having to add something new to the game.
In the 90s backtracking was so much worse because of the loading screens you had to deal with. RE2 even did that well though and turned it into a tension builder every time.

@BReal23 I did my first run full vanilla. Did my second with original costumes and original OST. Now I only play with original OST. It works surprisingly well with this game. It also adds to "shit your pants" factor.
About that Heart key, they could've left a written message from Claire in Leon 's playthrough, to let him know she has it, so he should'nt bother searching for it?
if your an oldskool player you already know that Leon gets the Clubkey and Claire gets the heart key.although I was expecting something new this time.but forget it they each have their own areas.
I know I’m late to the party but damn this game is amazing. I love how it kept the survival mechanics from the original and making your inventory space matter. Plus realizing you can’t kill every enemy and doing your best to evade or run. Great job, Capcom!
I look forward to seeing Mr X stomping towards you while wearing a Bowser costume. Or stalking the player while wearing the clothes the Terminator wore in the first movie, that could rock!
Meanwhile you've got Konami on the other side of a six thousand mile chasm, smoking crack and pissing on pictures of Silent Hill and its original developers, wondering when they'll ever see greatness ever again.
When I was playing with my girlfriend I kept accidentally combining the name Tyrant and Mr. X and just called him Mr. T. Now I can’t help but imagine a version of Mr. X that’s black and got a Mohawk and a bunch of gold chains and just runs around saying “I pity the fool!”
Ubisoft who have glitches of normal zombies more terrifying than the final boss. Bethesda would have the player run up a side of a wall, fall through a floor after taking a step, or get stuck by someone blocking your way instead of getting out of the way.
I came here for this. People trying to get their 20 seconds glory by bashing EA. Get over it, EA is bad, we know. Let them die, or let them alone. We have had enough.
There is a reason why Resident Evil 2 has a cult following and overwhelming positive reaction to this remake shows how many gamer's want a quality offline single player game with immersive story line! The question is when are the developers going to start listening to what gamer's want instead of telling us what we want!
Facts. Single player campaigns are what a real gamer wants. Online is dope for when you want that kind of gaming but a true experience is a great single player game. Like with that new fallout smh its not an online game they ruined what the franchise is about
@@shanekorte8393 An online fallout could have been fine... Fallout 76's problem is the fact that bethesda screwed it up, lied to customers about the collectors edition and what came with it, added all sorts of bugs, banned people for using exploits they left in the game, constantly break the game more and more on a daily basis with bugs, and keep piling micro transactions onto the burning train wreck.
A lot of memories i have from childhood are because of these single-player experiences, hell, i'm typing in English mostly 'cause of games. since Spider-man last year up to this point (with RDR2 and i dare say AC:O) I feel that true excitement about gaming again, plus we have KH3 and Devil May Cry being pretty close to release as well. This is just crazy, somehow, for me, it feels like a golden era of games until it drops a little again.
Your being ridiculous, we gamers today obviously don't want an offline single player adventure. What we want is a games as a service online multiplayer, with an exciting lootbox system. The fun part about it is you'll always get something surprising. Too be honest single player adventures are just too outdated and boring.

Indeed - this month. They'll likely add the previously cut enemies (spiders), getting a replayable game-mode with a baseline of three individual stories for sub-characters. For Free.
Yeah, i usually think Capcom is lazy, but this time, they are going all in to show us their good will, and I hope it pays for them. We need more companies that are ready to commit for their client.
I played this on the N64 back in the day. I also played RE3 on the play station after. Total classics. STAAARS! Capcom revived resident evil in the best ways. I'm so glad this series is back!
I'm almost at the end of my first playthrough as Claire (I've already beaten Leon's run) and I'm excited to play the extra modes. I even went and bought the Deluxe edition bc it was on sale. Great review Joe! It is honestly worth the money I spent. Even the 3 dollars for the rights to play the original soundtrack. It makes the game that much more scarier and awesome. I'm proud to say that it scared the living daylights out of me when I heard Mr. X coming. Update: I'm starting my second run of leon. Update 2/25/2022: Have beaten my 2nd Claire playthrough. I'm fully in love with this. Now my first exposure to resident evil was 7 and I fell in love with it. This and 7 are worth buying. Update 6/17/22: I have just beaten Claire A with an S rank and a time of 3 hours and 13 minutes. I am super proud of myself.
Hey, hope your run is going well. Even though I had my disappointments with this game and the tons of stuff that were cut from the original it's still a great and replaxable survival horror experience. I recommend doing as many challenges as you can (as long as it feels fun) once you've seen all the modes, they tend to make you think differently about your approach to situations and can help you get better at understanding the depths of mechsnics and make you a great player

Anyone else think Resident Evil 8 should focus on this direction more? RE7 was good.... but this RE2 remake is way scarier and more inline with what Resident Evil is famed for.... in my opinion.
@@MrLachapell I mean, an RE 4 remake with the RE engine would be cool, but it wouldn't fit with the style of gameplay considering it was an action game rather than survival. Let's not forget that we want RE to move away from gameplay like RE 4 and back to what made RE good. We don't need to pick up the trend RE 4 started, again.
I think RE7 was finding what works with their new tech, their knew RE engine, new age horror design in general. They have obviously found what works and what doesn't at this point. RE2 remake really shows that. As long as they learn a little from this game, and don't forget what made it good. It will be really hard to fuck it up going forward.
Capcom you deserve our money - thanks for taking the time to create a great game and not a money grab. I actually bought the game straight away...its like all the years of crappy games from money-grabbing developers has left me with a 6th sense for real games. =)
It’s funny how easy it is to tell when the developers actually have passion for a project. And it feels like every member of that team grew up and wanted to work at Capcom because they loved the original RE2.
No doubt we'll get re3. Tyrant follows you on all 4 playthroughs whenever it was only the 2nd scenario in the original. Now imagine him sprinting with a rocket launcher screaming "stars"
R3make is already in the works. Dino Crisis.. A bit of a long shot, probably. Resident Evil never went away, so there’s far more brand recognition and guaranteed return on a main series title. Reviving an old franchise is quite a bit riskier. But it would be cool.
The age of the CapGod's era has begun once again with the coming of Devil May Cry 5, the release of RE2 REmake, and more than likely a RE3 REmake coming soon as well.
We are still waiting for square to come back like this ,with the final Fantasy 7 remake hopefully. Square soft and Capcom were my favorite game developers for the longest time. Then the ps3 and 360 generation came a long ,then they weren't so great in my eyes.
I demand a Silent Hill remake that’s equal to this one. Imagine Pyramid Head roaming the world like Mr. X, but you bring in the dogs, gray children, nurses, etc. Would be awesome!
Ben Wasserman yea Capcom has been making some great stuff lately. I started to lose faith in them for awhile. Can’t wait to play dmc 5 when it comes out and look forward to seeing what they do with re8

@Chuck Norris Playing both characters on their first run. Playing as both characters on 2nd run. A speed run, beating the game in hardcore mode, beating the game with an S ranking. Those are just some few examples.

I just bought this last month on ps4 store and this is my second time playing through it. First off I want to say I love your guys channel. You guys and AVGN are my favorites on here. I battle with fibromyalgia and I hurt all the time but when I watch your guys reviews you guys always make me laugh so I just want to thank you for that. Laughing helps with my pain. I grew up with the old NES. Got it for Christmas of 88 from my grandparents. I went on to get the super nes in 93 then Sega in 95. Finally I got the N64 when I was 15. I rented this game on the N64 one time and cause of the tank controls I could not play it. I have Amway loved the resident evil movies and soundtracks. I got my first playstation the ps3 from my aunt in 2016. Then my ps4 in July for my thirty seventh birthday. The first resident evil game I ever played was number six on the ps3 and I personally loved it. So when I got the ps4 used I knew the second game was a game I wanted. Now I admit cause I suck at playing games the first time leon story took me 15 hours to best. Claire on the other ha d only took nine. Leon story did not scary me. But Claire's did. It was Mr. X. I could not hide from him. He entered where ever I went. So many times it left me jumping at different times. I loved it. I love horror games. I play Friday the 13th as well. I even record my game play and post it on my page. These games are amazing and I would tell anyone who is a fan of horror and zombies to to y this game. I can see why it is a classic. Going to work on all the others which I own all the regular games on both systems. So I can't wait for the third game. Of course I have to wait to get it when it on sale for cheaper. My main game for next year is the last of us part two which I already had prebought. So I just want to say thank you for making such great video. Keep up the good work bros

The red check mark was kinda in the other games as well, you just got a message saying "this item is no longer useful, discard?" and you got rid of it.
Thats the beauty of classic RE games. You can waste 15 hours on your fist playthrough then speedrun it in 1 hour. Similar case happens with Dark Souls. The time spent on your first playthrough of these games is just in your head.
My first playthrough of this game on Leon A was about 7 hours and some change. By my 3rd playthrough I shaved that down to about an hour and 30 minutes.

It sure is. It feels like Resident Evil 4 combined with Resident Evil 2. It feels like Capcom upgrade Resident Evil 4’s controls while staying true to the original gameplay.
I hope u played Re7 too.
Wait until you play Resident Evil 4.
@Arcturus Mengsk they might have not listen to you but they sure listen to fans which include me along with many and they will all prefer this kind of rework over any hd remastered shit that add little to nothing over original and still ask for $60.

The point of playing videogames is to relax and have fun, I go to work for a challenge.
Not only that it makes it harder due to the change of enemies zombies to lickers
In the 90s backtracking was so much worse because of the loading screens you had to deal with. RE2 even did that well though and turned it into a tension builder every time.
Metal gear pal key back tracking

Good news! This game, Resident evil 3 remake, and 7 are getting free next gen upgrades via Xbox Smart Delivery and the PlayStation equivalent. I've been waiting for this

This game is living proof that AAA can do it right when they want to.
Hopefully Res 3 remake is the same
Now give us RE:3 and Code Veronica remakes
JerichoKru a code Veronica remake I would buy. Didn’t care much for resident evil 2.
There has been talk about RE3 remake being in the works, and if the two games (2 & 3) sell well enough, Veronica remake is a possibility. Fingers crossed.
No just no re 3 remake should be the last one cause they are still not learning anything u practically saying it's okay to fuck up with newer games and remake more I platinumed re2 remake but 3 should be the last one cause 6 and 7 were really bad after re3 remake they should end the franchise 7 killed everything and wasn't a re game 6 was bad but had its re elements like zombies infected dogs but had way to much action but thats what re games originally were scfi action horror but with 4 5 and 6 were way to much action and 7 killed the series as a hole and theirs no coming back from it since it managed to fail more then 6 in sales
HS39 786 End the Franchise? You honestly expect them to just end one of there own popular franchises? As long as people buy they continue to make.
they gotta remake 0 too :D
Anyone else think Resident Evil 8 should focus on this direction more? RE7 was good.... but this RE2 remake is way scarier and more inline with what Resident Evil is famed for.... in my opinion.
Imagine re4 remake like this
@@MrLachapell I mean, an RE 4 remake with the RE engine would be cool, but it wouldn't fit with the style of gameplay considering it was an action game rather than survival.
@@MrLachapell no, re4 doesn't really need a remake. Plus, it wasn't even scary. I'd rather have a re3 remake or code veronica
Just continue the story from here, new timeline, dont go out of Raccoon, after 3 games nuke it. Then start a new RE like 7 or something
I almost completely agree... but they still gated off the original soundtrack in game with 10$ :( that is the only bad spot to me
Best part of the review"
"Hey Joe you wanna play another zombie game?"
Now hopefully Capcom will remake Resident Evil 3 and Dino Crisis.
No doubt we'll get re3. Tyrant follows you on all 4 playthroughs whenever it was only the 2nd scenario in the original. Now imagine him sprinting with a rocket launcher screaming "stars"
Dino Crisis
fuck yes. Dino crisis is my first love on the ps1.
R3make is already in the works.
Dino Crisis.. A bit of a long shot, probably. Resident Evil never went away, so there’s far more brand recognition and guaranteed return on a main series title. Reviving an old franchise is quite a bit riskier. But it would be cool.
Yes!! And lets get some onimusha in the RE engine that would be so good.
The age of the CapGod's era has begun once again with the coming of Devil May Cry 5, the release of RE2 REmake, and more than likely a RE3 REmake coming soon as well.
Let’s hope and pray we stay exponential.
We are still waiting for square to come back like this ,with the final Fantasy 7 remake hopefully. Square soft and Capcom were my favorite game developers for the longest time. Then the ps3 and 360 generation came a long ,then they weren't so great in my eyes.
Dont forget monster hunter world
Monster Hunter World is when this new golden age started, I believe DMCV will be amazing.
Now we only need dragons dogma 2
I demand a Silent Hill remake that’s equal to this one. Imagine Pyramid Head roaming the world like Mr. X, but you bring in the dogs, gray children, nurses, etc. Would be awesome!

I personally give this game a 10/10. The replay value itself gives it this rating. If a game has me coming back for more even after I beat it 2 times it deserves the title Masterpiece.
@Chuck Norris different scenarios, endings, weapons, routes, game modes, etc. Basically the definition of replay value.
@Chuck Norris Playing both characters on their first run. Playing as both characters on 2nd run. A speed run, beating the game in hardcore mode, beating the game with an S ranking. Those are just some few examples.
You're likely gonna enjoy Devil may cry 5 then. The franchise is the DEFINITION of replay value. And it looks to be even better all previous games.
@@RealWardon Everything Hideki Kamiya makes is a masterpiece. He is the most consistent dev I have ever seen. And his games have tons of replay value.
@@yorha9949 Kamiya only made 1 and participated in 2 (which wasn't that good). The series skyrocketed with Hideaki Itsuno taking over and giving us the brilliant DMC3 and 4. Now he's also making 5. Kamiya has nothing to do with 5's development.

The world record speedrun for Leon A Standard difficulty is under 1 hour now.
Just a wee bit insane imho.
By my 3rd playthrough I shaved that down to about an hour and 30 minutes.
all that puzzle solving and lore reading takes a long time.
@@TokyoReborn skip the cutscenes and have codes and such memorized or a picture of them to shave off 4+ hours

This game is one of the best ever made. The details of the environment.... the character models. Everything. Amazing. I’m sad I beat it already like 6 times. The first time was sooooo gooood
Did you did the hard mode
It sure is. It feels like Resident Evil 4 combined with Resident Evil 2. It feels like Capcom upgrade Resident Evil 4’s controls while staying true to the original gameplay. Not only do we have better movement and aiming but we also have that classic Resident Evil gameplay where every bullet counts. This is one of the best games I’ve played recently. Finally no annoying Battle Royale modes, no crazy micro transactions and no pay to win mechanics! This is how you make a video game. EA take notes.
