  • I had said that Resident Evil - Code: Veronica was a game people were mixed on. Turns out, the game has a lot of fans, so I was curious to play it to finally get an opinion for myself. As the title of the video says, I didn't enjoy it much, and today we shall explore the fundamental issues that made me not enjoy RE's first next generation installment.

    Good things:
    1. The knife has been greatly improved
    2. The camera work style from Dino Crisis 1 was used and improved upon here.
    Bad things:
    1. How they presented the second half of the game was just baaad, its just basically Chris redoing what Claire went through.
    2. The gore has been drastically dumbed down , sure there are blood splattering, but I believe there are no head popping, head decapitating or torsos being blown out

Sentiments echoed by a large majority of the fanbase. RE4 is fine as is, it doesn't need a remake and there's very little they could change or add to make it relevant. Code Veronica is in desperate need of an overhaul because of how fundamentally flawed it is. It could benefit from being streamlined the way the other two games were, eliminating a large bulk of the unnecessary backtracking as a lot of it felt superfluous. This seems to be an inherent issue with the industry (as well as Hollywood) as they constantly focus on remaking already successful and well received games when the bad ones could use the update more to make them more appealing and potentially improve their status among fans.

God how salty I am they're just, at this point, ignoring Code Veronica's existence. In how it's got the short end with ports, and no consideration for remaking. When this game, next to the OG RE1, is an RE game that stands most to benefit from the full remake treatment! Cuz this game, its enemies, characters, voice acting, locations, and unique ideas have SOOO much potential!! All the pieces are present in this game for a top-tier Resident Evil experience, it just needs that retweaking to help it all reach its fullest potential. That part really soured the game for me as well. I've been replaying it the past few days.
When I was playing as Chris I had no way of saving that guy from the worm creature because I quite simply didn't have enough ammo to kill it. So I was unable to get the lighter as Chris.
Had I known I had to dump all the weapons in the item locker I'd obviously have done it. But with all that being said I do still like the game.

16:55 Dino Crisis 2 did that first and better in the ps1
Regina has dual sub machinegun weapons that will individually target and track enemies with a lot more range and precision than the dual handguns of cvx
That games overall design also makes better use of them, being more action focused and actually having situations where the dual targetting really comes in hand.
I honestly cant recall any time in CVX where the dual handguns were actively useful outside of being a fun gimmick (specially since they have super limited ammo and you never pick up more)
Hell, something else people praise CVX for are its 3d areas and dynamic camera anglea... which dino crisis 1 has done already on the ps1... and again, did arguably better, by actively using its camera angles to simulate something watching or following you through windows and overall bulding tension, which is something I honestly dont remember CVX doing outside 9ne or two rooms.

For some reason I really like the game even though I totally understand its problems.
I'm kinda glad you weren't shitting so much on Steve like 90% of global population does lol I think he has a really traumatic backstory and actual changes to his character during the game, like, most RE games the protagonists barely change their atitudes during their games, Steve was pretty much the first to have full development which I appreciate.
The only thing that I can say to help is that half of the backtracking can be avoided in later playthroughs if you plan exactly were to go, for exemple instead of going back to the prison to give the hemostatic to Rodrigo and then coming back again to use the indigo plate, you can do both at once and aliviate that.
There are some door transitions that are veeeryyy slow and has a heart beating, in that moment the controle vibrates to give tension, so without that feature it becomes super boring, since the game use more resources, naturally the loading times had to be longer, BUT there is a code for Dolphin that makes it possible to skip door transitions, it really improves the passing as expected.

Yeah it's one of those games where I acknowledge all the flaws that people mention. However the strengths are soo good that I'm willing to forgive them. The game has a unique vibe that's different from the trilogy, that I can't quite describe. Alexia's private residence has a really creepy feel, the game isn't focusing about the T-virus soo much and more about the weird Ashford twins and I think makes this game one of the scariest ones. Yet, the game is still cheesy and light hearted. I think that's RE's core identity.
Plus I love the big ambitious scale of this game, fighting Tyrant on a flying plane, how cool is that! And the soundtrack is the best in the series as well, has my favourite save room music.

Steve is one of my favorites because he's much deeper of a character than most. So nice to see someone mentioning it. However Code Veronica issues aren't issues. Every game had issues. 3 was short and barely different than 2 cosmetically. 1 was bad voice acting and terrible graphics which unlike the rest, haven't aged well. 2 no puzzles, easier than the rest. Chris coming back to save his sister was one of the most epic moments of RE history!! It made RE1 and RE2 finally come full circle. Jill already had her turn again in RE3, so this was Chris' time to shine. Code Veronica already had our beloved Claire from the masterpiece of RE2, and now Chris is more badass than ever. And of course the franchise didn't forget about Leon, because he came in the next installment! Excellent storytelling.

As much as I love the story and characters in this game on paper, I think you hit the nail on the head with the gameplay: 9 times out of 10 I want to play it, but 5 minutes into it I just go “Ehhhh, I wanna play something else.” I think Alfred’s a really underrated and almost tragic villain, and even Steve’s a good character on paper, but I REALLY hope the fan-remake heavily reworks the layout and gameplay, because it can be a slog to play.

For me it's my favourite resident evil and one of my favourite games ever. The Christmas I got this I also got a Dreamcast and several other games,it was my favourite childhood Christmas. I remember it being hard when I first played it but in a good way, I loved the characters & story and it really felt like resident evil taking the next step of evolution with its moving camera. The soundtrack was absolutely incredible & I still think it's the best soundtrack of the series along with OG RE1. I never suffered from the character swap halfway through on my first playthrough, but did on my second completely forgetting about it so it kind of felt like my fault. Code Veronica recaptured the atmosphere of the first RE & some of the segments were absolute nightmare fuel. Evil Doctor part, bandasnatcher part, iron maiden part & doctors basement in general, the fact that Alfred used to go down there drink wine and watch people be tortured. ANATOMIST'S NOTE is up there with itchy tasty as the best file in resident evil imo.

I got CV back when it first released on the DreamCast all those years ago. At the time, I thought it was a fantastic game, and I had a great time with it. I've replayed it several times over the years on various platforms, and, while I still think it's a great game, it's hard to deny that it has some huge design flaws that can easily cause someone who is playing it for the first time to not be able to finish the game, at no fault of their own. Having played it before I'm aware of these flaws and can easily work around them, but I can definitely see how someone playing CV for the first time could end up having a bad time with it.

    • @mich722

      Which design flaws?

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@mich722 Well, a big one that stands out to me, is how easy it is for the fire extinguisher (or other items too for that matter) to get left behind in the security box that's in the first part of the game. If that happens then it's not possible to get the Magnum later in the game.
I believe there may also be a little bit of weirdness involving parts with character switching, where, if you don't know how things are going to play out in advance, it's pretty easy to get into a situation where the character you're currently playing as may struggle to progress if the other character happens to be carrying certain weapons and items instead of having left them in an item box.
There's also the boss fight near the end where you're supposed to just run away while taking damage and healing. If you don't have enough healing items there I believe it could stop you from being able to finish the game. I know it's theoretically possible to get past that part without taking any damage, but, in order to do that you've got to play in a pretty strange way that I don't think would be fair to expect players to figure out.

If you pick up all the ammo you see while playing as Claire (something that you would absolutely be doing first time round because of how hard the game is), then Chris cannot pick them up in his run through, meaning you’d have to play through the first half of the game with very little/no ammo. The game does not tell you about this so you would have no way of knowing.
As the other guy said, you can permanently lock yourself out of getting the magnum if you don’t remember some random item that has no apparent purpose for the 90% of the game.
You have to take forced damage during the Steve chase scene. He can kill you in two hits and you have to constantly heal to get past him. If you do not have any herbs or First Aid spray, you can get permanently stuck here. You can get around him but you need to either do some bizarre movement that isn’t obvious at all or abuse a pause glitch. Neither of these are intended by the devs
You can become permanently stuck in the game’s final stretch if you don’t forget to use the item box as Claire to leave weapons for Chris. The game does not warn you about this so you can have all your best weapons and ammo stuck with Claire and leave nothing for Chris, making the final boss unbeatable.

The "gameplay that didn't improve on RE3" is an incorrect statement. It doesn't have some RE3 stuff like auto stair climbing, dodging, and ammo creation because both games were being developed at the same time by different teams, but it did have some new features such as retries, first person aiming (with specific weapons), dual wielding, being able to use healing items without adding them to the inventory (useful when your inventory is full), and a knife that's actually useful. I consider RE3 to be the better game (mostly due to some odd design choices for RECV), but RECV is still pretty damn good.

A fantastic and refreshing point of view, honestly. You've explained far better than a lot of reviewers why this game can be so dull and frustrating to play on a first playthrough, and you're showing far more respect to the game than you were given back. A lot of fans who've played it at the time have a skewed perspective because they don't have to re-experience the shitty parts they've only ever felt once. It's like Mad Space from SA2; you might eventually enjoy it, but that 1st time (arguably many more times after), man, those 15-20 minutes wasted due to terrible conveyance... Even on a second playthrough CV is just marginally better, it's decent at best and plodding at worst.

I have to agree. I tried getting into Code Veronica several times before, and it just didn't do it for me. The atmosphere felt like at odds with itself; how much the tone shifts between being a thrill-ride and trying to be scary, and the environment design outside of some euro-inspired ones just looked so sterile and flat. It's easily the most bored I felt playing an old-school Resident Evil game, and I don't like that since I enjoy Claire as a character as well as consider the Dreamcast next to the PlayStation 1 as my favourite gaming system, but it is what it is.
No disrespect to those who enjoy it. I'd rather feel like I'm missing something as opposed to coming to a disappointing conclusion. But in general, I don't enjoy these kinds of games.

Also I agree about CV and CVX, played it for the first time during quarantine a couple years ago despite being a huge re fan and I felt the same way. The game throwing bullshit at you that you have no way to predict , that can also soft lock your playthrough if you don't have a earlier recent file (which, if you're a RE veteran you should know to rotate save files) takes too much of the enjoyment of the game out. Also I was always wondering why the exploration felt so weird in this game and thank you, it's because it's over too wide an area unlike the condensed raccoon city streets or Spencer mansion. All that said , with it being the last of the original fixed camera angle survival horror re games it down still holds some merit with me and that keeps it mostly middle of the pack in terms of my series rankings. Keep up the good work 👍🏽

I'm going to be completely honest. I played CV for the first time around August of last year. I tried, tried, and tried to play that thing, but as the first RE game I'd ever played that used the tank controls, I wasn't having any fun with it. I wanna say it took me about a month before I finally made it past the first prison section. Every other time I'd just give up if I died and called it a day. And so I tried and tried and tried some more until I finished the game. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't a game I enjoyed fully. The final battle with Alexia had me stumped for a bit as well, with her 15 billion simulatanious attacks, I just grew tired of it after awhile and had to resort to stashing my inventory with flame rounds and herbs just to kill her.
Now's the funny part. I thought about it. Why on earth did I keep coming back? I know I was frustrated with how it functioned, and the many pitfalls of the game were terribly annoying, so why didn't I hate it? I didn't even feel board by it. I actually liked it. Not in the same way I did as RE2R or 3R, but in the same way I enjoy darksouls. I enjoyed the challenge that I eventually overcame. And it made me feel weird inside. I can't really explain it other than that.
I put it down for a while and only occasionally returned to it, but I'd usually stop before I got to the ending and just started over the next time I replayed it. Until this last Christmas. I heard about the tradition of playing CV on Christmas, since it takes place around that time, while not exactly on it, it's an easy enough mark to use, and it's a reason to replay an RE game.
So I start it up, and I play it, and I'm actually enjoying myself, now in the same way I recalled feeling when I played through RE2R. I wasn't dying very often, I had enough ammo to last awhile, and I knew I probably wouldn't have the time to pick it up again if I dropped it then and there. So for the next 5ish hours,. I just sat there, playing the game from start to finish, having a blast. and I really didn't understand it. i thought the game was tough, so why wasn't it as challenging. Yeah, I knew the locations and what went where by now... but surely that couldn't have made the game feel all that different. i have a pretty good memory so I usually knew what went where anyway, so it's not like immediatly knowing where something went was all that much different from me remembering where I saw that one door with that one engraving in it.
I guess maybe it's more of me knowing the item placement than the paths and doors well. That's really the closest thing I could compare it to.
So yeah. CV, I enjoy it.

In the PS1 Resident Evil games, if you shoot a zombie until it falls, bullets hit the zombie behind it. In this shitty game, bullets just disappear when this happens, wasting ammo.
On the PS1, pressing L1 switches to the nearest enemy. After killing one, it auto-aims to the next closest. In this crap, the auto-aim sometimes targets the farthest enemy, leading to being caught by closer enemies due to bad mechanics. How did they manage to make the Dreamcast and PS2 versions have worse mechanics than the PS1 classics? It's beyond comprehension.

I replayed CVX for the first time in over 10 years. I beat it a few days ago. At the beginning of the game, Claire meets up with Steve in a room with a computer that's connected to the internet. She then emails Leon to have him warn Chris about what's going on. That confused me, as I thought Claire went to Umbrella Europe to continue her search for Chris. Why would she email Leon to contact Chris (whom she's searching for) to warn him about Umbrella (which Chris went to Europe to further uncover what was going on)?

I always hear so much praise online from fans of Code Veronica but man, I played it when it first came out on Dreamcast and recently did a play through and I have to say I agree with you 100%. I got frustrated and bored with the game. It just wasn’t fun like the previous 3. The level design is a mess and the story is just laughable (looking at you Steve).
On the other hand I’m all for a remake to see what Capcom could currently do. I know RE4 is next up but I’d be hyped to see how they could tighten up the level design and add new exciting gameplay elements. Also bring back the Claire actress/model from RE2 and now we’re really talking.

The level design becomes much better in future playthroughs and the story isn't laughable. Sorry, but Steve being a bad character has no bearing on the full story. REV explored more of Umbrella's origins and wrapped up the events from the original trilogy. Also, Alyson Court is never coming back. She's a union VA now who Capcom doesn't work with. That's why she was replaced in Revelations 2.

With how you've talked about these games, I'm not surprised it was never an issue for you, but since you talked about how you failed to properly address the game's reception I feel like it's a bit odd to not address that part of the game. On my first playthrough I had to restart at the plane fight, and I just quit my second playthrough when I realized I needed the empty fire extinguisher which I ditched in the metal detector box to unlock the magnum. Never gone back to it since, so I haven't even had a chance to restart because of the large Steve fight.

That's a ridiculous statement and you know it. RE3 leaned heavily on RE2 and even re-used whole assets and environments like the police station. At least CV actually brought something new to the franchise besides just recycling the B story of RE2 about some super tyrant chasing you around. I like RE3 just fine but it essentially feels like a retread of RE2 with some incredibly stiff and occasionally painful dodge mechanics thrown in. Even the active time events where you're offered different choices don't end up being that significant or interesting on repeat playthroughs. CV has better environments, better atmosphere, a better story, a better soundtrack, deeper interactions between the characters (the whole subplot with Rodrigo, Claire' jailer, is absolutely beautiful and one of the small things that tends to get overlooked in this game) and actually gives us some interesting backstory about Umbrella as a company.

    • @gorrack10281987
      @gorrack10281987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@silversnail1413 I would strongly disagree with nearly everything you said. The police station was literally the only environment it reused. The assets themselves being reused is fine as long as it's not lazy and is transformative. I believe that re3 did this and then some.
Re1 is about escaping a mansion. Re2 is about escaping a police station. Re3 is about escaping a city. Code veronica is about escaping a bunch of military bases. Everyone but the first one is a retread.
Nemesis is the best enemy throughout the franchise before RE4, period.
I don't mind the dodge mechanic but am sympathetic to your dislike.
Depending on your strategy of play the cutscenes choices can make a big difference on the tactics used. It adds good flavor but you are right in that only nicoli's fate changes and you get to see Barry.
The writing is pretty bad in code veronica and so is code veronicas voice acting. The battle music is trash. The ambient music is fantastic. It's so good it almost makes the cvx soundtrack as good as re3s. Rodrigo and Claire's interaction is short and sweet just like Jill's and brads.
The notes in the game are all really good.

Got a GameCube just for the remake later (still my absolute favorite RE game)

I replayed it later in college
And hated it. It's bland and uninspired in level design throughout the majority of the game. The enemies aren't very scary, or anything else really.
There's a lot of obtuse things that artificially increase difficulty and can soft lock you out of progression. Like I know the game well because I played it so much, but I don't blame people who get totally roadblocked by the time they hit the tyrant fight on the plane

I'm glad you mentioned the controls of the HD version. They are terrible. This a problem Capcom seems to have a lot when rereleasing their older games. Many of the Resident Evil HD remasters have the menu, action, and run buttons swapped around, and the Mega Man collections usually don't allow you to use the triggers, which sucks because I prefer using the left shoulder button for dashing.

I hate that Code: Veronica and RE0 uses circle to run and square for menu. I like to rest my thumb on the square button to run and then use the lower part of my thumb to press X for opening doors and such. That way you never even have to lift your thumb. Although I think a lot of the goofier parts of the story will need a rewrite, the twins especially have a lot of potential if written more seriously (especially if by being repeatedly defeated Alfred eventually cracks and becomes his CV classic character). Also have Chris go to different areas than Claire, like some hidden areas that the self destruct accidentally revealed so it doesn't feel like padding.

He says, "CVX is basically a RE game that tries to keep the old style from the PS1 games but also add some moderations to it." In addition, i pick this game every here and there because the one thing that holds it back is the replayability. I hate that this game uses the RE2 grading system and if you want that A rank, you can only save in one place and that's it. Another reason is how the game makes you use the knife to save ammo so if you don't try to master it, you're not getting far in the game.

This game definitely was hyped when it came out which scored it a lot of points. Being on a next gen console, update graphics, the camera was different here so it wasn't full tank controls (I don't think you talked about this but imo a big change), Chris coming back, the dual guns gimmick they advertised a lot. There was enough there to make it seem like we were getting a major next gen update.
One thing that sticks with me when it comes to this game is the music. They definitely did something different here and I enjoyed it. More orchestral sounding.
I honestly think we won't see an update to the game because they are afraid of touching the boss in modern times who could be seen as a cross dresser or trans and it's a touchy subject they rather would not do and it's kinda important to just change and write off. Hope they find a way and do it, Chris coming back to the series and climbing that cliff is def in my top 3 moments of Resident Evil.
