- The Remake of Resident Evil 4 has been out for a couple weeks now, so I figured enough time had passed for a spoiler filled analysis. In this video, I will be comparing the remake of RE4 to it's original version from 2005 to see what I liked about the new version, and what were some areas I liked in the original more.

At around 6:07, minor mistake, the game does have a quick turn. It's back + sprint. Or back + crouch if you change it.

I think the fact that the original RE4 STILL holds up after all these years, just shows how amazing the it was. Even with those high expectations, RE4 remake somehow manages to almost meet them.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that they're remaking the older titles not just as a cash grab or update but to make the timeline go better with 7 and and Village.
I was thinking the same thing and it's a good idea from Capcom.

Best part about the remake was that Luis’s death actually brought a tear to my eye, and that was because of the one line he said before he died, and that was, “people can change right?” Hit all kinds of feels. Proves people can change.
The theming is also even stronger considering Leon just saw his old major and mentor change into a power hungry psychopath willing to murder innocent people’s lives. Krauser changed for worse while Luis tried to change for the better. It was here Leon also gave the incentive to ask Ada if “she’s changed” and how he’s willing to look past someone’s past if they’re willing to do the right thing. In the end, Ada doesn’t hand over the Plaga sample to Wesker as she knew that he too has changed for worse… and how he’ll rebuild umbrella and cause the deaths of millions of people. Ada didn’t want that blood on her hands… and RE4’s theming is so simplistic… yet effective…

While playing the remake I saw like two trash bins and I thought to myself, hmmm I wonder if we could hide her there 😂 but nope! 😭😭😭
You missed the part in original that established Ada tricked wesker by giving him the subservient species instead of the dominant one and able to hide her betrayal from him, which is way more in line of what Ada would do, instead of outright pointing a gun at the pilot and switching course which basically scream to wesker of her betrayal

Ada and Leon felt like they are just acquaintance, Luis and Leon were assholes to each other for most of the time, Krauser were just off, and basically all of the villains also got downgraded, I have no problem they’ve made it woke, I have a problem they’ve made it worse

I like how in the original Saddler tells Leon his entire plan near the beginning of the game. Really smart move.
I also like how Salazar is a wildly incompetent buffoon and lets Leon easily escape multiple times in the original. Trying to trap Leon and Ashley with the falling ceiling trick twice was a genius idea, especially when it gave you an eternity to shoot the red dots on the ceiling.
The original introducing Krauser with very little backstory and almost no context with Leon was amazing.
Luis getting suddenly killed off in the original after 5 minutes of screen time was so effective. I also like how Leon dramatically yelled his name (pronouncing it incorrectly too) even though he barely even interacted with him up to that point.

I like re2 and 4 remake leon cuz he looks like some random guy that survived, and the og looks like a super trained John wick mf, ik thats how he is but I like remake leon more

This is an interesting remake. The original still holds up and the remake extends what the original already has established. This is a great remake.
"Extends" = "Cuts large chunks of the game out"
(Lava room, laser room, incendiary grenades, cable cars, U3, etc etc etc)

They knocked everything out of the park. The Garrador and Novistadors were so incredible this time around.
Agreed had a hell of time using just knives to kill a garrador for achievement & novistadors will swarm the shit outta ya if you not ready for it. Love it but I think the knights were my favorite enemies in the game..

Beating or even matching the original was always going to be a challenge. It was such an amazing, campy and hilarious, if a bit hard to control masterpiece. Even though I love the remake, it really sucks how much stuf from the original was cut out, especially since I like a lot of the new stuff, and combining them would've been so much fun. Not having the giant robot Ramon, was especially tough to swallow. It just doesn't quite feel the same. Very fun still, but not the same.

Just letting you know, the quick turn is still in the game, the default controls just put it on the right bumper, for whatever reason. I switched over to the second pre set that puts it back on Circle (or b if you're on an Xbox pad).
I played the original right before this one came out and after playing the remake. I honestly preferred the original I personally felt like the new one lost some of the personality that made the original stand out to me. The atmosphere, cheezy dialogue and fun action is what I fell in love with the most and all of that to me isn't present or has been very heavily toned down

They lost some love and soul. Remake is more advanced and modern, but it doesn't feel as sincere and heartwarming.

Really disagree with the bit about Ashley. She was way less annoying in this, but still just as difficult to keep alive. On Hardcore mode, anyway

Character wise is much improved but mechanically, she is still terrible if not worse. The amount of times I have told her to get in a locker for her to just get back out during a battle encounter or when she crouch runs towards me as I am shooting then she stands up causing me to shoot her.

Luis working for Umbrella wasn't added, he always was a former umbrella scientist it was just in the lore text files instead of being addressed it dialogue in the remake.
Leon and Luis did talk briefly about his time with Umbrella a couple times during dialogue, especially during the mines sequence and the short elevator ride. I feel like they gave Luis a much better character/ redemption arc in the remake. His added screen time allowed his partnership with Leon to develop a lot more, and they gave him a lot more dialogue. Exploring the files and equipment in his lab was awesome too.

My best guess is that RE: Code Veronica will get remade next and then RE5. While originally CV acted as a 3.5, I'm thinking the remakes are more about reusing assets this time and continuing character arcs/stories. RECV will make more sense as a REmake 4.5 in this context cause now you can continue the story of Wesker and Chris, and then reuse those assets and continue those threads more into RE5make.
Technically CV was the third game, Sony demanded Capcom to name Nemesis as the third game, so they have a trilogy on PS1. It wqs supposed to be just a side story. Should've been just another campaign in RE2 remake, three shorter campaigns telling the Raccoon City Story would've been better. RE2R doesn't make any sense story wise, one of many reasons I prefer RE3R over it.

I just played through re4 OG on professional twice. It’s brutal but incredibly fair, the remake’s professional is so bullshit.
But… the original feels full and complete while the remake feels rushed and incomplete. The story feels chopped and rushed, characters feel strange, saddler doesn’t exist. The enemy sounds aren’t audible at all. It’s wild a game 20 years later does not replace the original.

Absolutely loved the remake as a huge fan of RE4, I even impulse bought a PS5 to play it haha. No regrets.
Between this and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, I feel like this is going to be an absolutely crazy year for gaming, and that's awesome.
This version is a remix that does the original justice, I played RE4 OG when it dropped back in 2005 on gamecube when I was in college. I spent thousands of hours replaying this game, I love this version, I can deal with some of the cut pieces, yeah they would have been cool, but it wasn't like RE3 where it was almost unrecognizable from the source. Overall, it was a good remake. Hopefully at some point we get a Code Veronica remake.

I agree. The remake is better in many ways, but some fans are way too nostalgic to acknowledge it. Both games have their pros and cons, but overall I prefer the remake. Better combat, puzzles, expanded exploration, side quests, attaché case customization, better enemy AI, deeper lore, and better characters elevate it above the OG for me.

@@AngelPerez-tu1nk Yeah, the nostalgic fanboys are insanely irrational. Even the slightest change to the original triggers a complete meltdown. I beat the original countless times, and still recognize that the remake is a better game overall. I think after the new and improved Separate Ways comes out this will be almost indisputable.
One thing I was really worried about with the stealth in remake was it would relegate a lot of the game to "stealth" which I really didn't like but I think it's just useful enough in just enough areas to where it does add to the game but it doesn't change its focus to a "stealth type" of game.
I love both versions of the game but honest, I think the remake is better.
Remakes like this is one of the reasons Capcom doesn't go back to other IPs. RE4 Remake is simply one of their greatest games ever!

playing both games, I still prefer the original. the remake improves on combat, I like the knife counters, I like the knife fight with Krauser, but its the little changes that annoyed me about the remake. Luis isn't a cool friend to Leon, he's just some annoying guy, and I get Leon has obvious reasons not to trust him but the too serious Leon felt so weird to me. removal of dialogue annoyed me, the "sex discrimination" line is gone, all of Leons jokes towards saddler and Salazar on radio is gone. and I can't get with Leons new VA, I didn't mind it with the re2 remake since he's a young rookie, but Leon not having the older commanding voice in re4 didn't seem right to me. like the bingo line with the new voice actor just didn't hit me the same as when the old voice actor said it.
I think it’s a miracle that they managed to take a amazing classic and make it even better!

I wouldn't say it made it better, it just offers a different experience. The remake feels modern and high end but it isn't a replacement for the sublime arcadey stop-n-pop gameplay found in the original. I still go back to the OG RE4 because there's really nothing like it to this day. Even Capcom describes the remakes as "reimaginings".
There are some aspects that I prefer in the OG such as the weapons, they just feel more "crunchy" and satisfying to use. I also prefer the laser sight for all weapons over the regular crosshair. Furthermore, some characters had way more charisma in the OG compared to remake either due to the voice acting (Ada & Krauser) or their portrayal (Salazar & Saddler). You will probably think I'm crazy but I think Ashley's AI in the OG is actually better. The fact that you can tell her to wait is a life saver. She's a better character in the remake but her escort missions were handled better in the OG.
Facts the original got nothing on the remake
Sound design in remake should be generally accepted as inferior for sure. All of the ganado chants and callouts sound muffled and don’t clue you into locations as effectively. The enemy vocalizations in classic got more warped and twisted as the game progressed. “Morir es vivir” is seriously missed in RE4R, and the “gloria las plaga” chant is more annoying than spooky. Regens’ heavy breathing is really subdued. RE4 relied on audio because movement and camera control were restrictive by design, but that’s no excuse for remake to not put in the same effort. Voice direction is almost universally worse. The ambient soundtrack of the original was better as well.
All I got to say is old Leon would destroy new Leon.
The remake does have a quick turn. I don't recall if you have to turn it on but it can configured in the settings to change the button combo for it.
My only problem with RE4 is by the time I get to the island it feels like it goes an extra couple hours more than it should, Ashley gets kidnapped again, the helicopter sequence, the Regenerators( which are cool),the U3 boss, the mine level,Krauser, it just feels like it goes so long, it tires me out severely when I do a playthrough

Hey man, great video! This remake was amazing and although it didn’t necessarily deserve one, I’m glad it got one. As much as I would like CV to be remade next, then Re0, I think they’re gonna do Re5 first. I would love to see a remake of re5 but not yet. Gotta get those 2 out at least before considering an re5 remake
Fun fact: There’s a depraved idol in the castle only obtainable with Ashley, and if you obtain it she actually has quite a few lines in response which I found super cool. I also only discovered this after 157 hours of total playtime

Rumored has it that the u3 monster will be at the separate ways dlc that's coming up later next year i hear.
Also I believe that krauser does have connections with Wesker and Ada that it's not shown in the main game but rather in the DLC separate ways too so I'm hoping they do establish that when it gets released.

RE4 is one of those games that will forever have a special place in my heart. I could play this game over, and over, and over. I just adored this game. The PS2 era was an awesome era to be a gamer. Most of my top 10 games are from this era. Like FF10 , kingdom hearts, and dark cloud 1 and 2. Still waiting for 3 😂 but thats a subject for another day... I bet entire youtube videos can be made on this subject.
I just hope the silent hill 2 remake can also be as great as the original, but I think that one will be truly impossible unless designed by team silent themselves
Yeah I wouldn’t count on that. Capcom has the budget, time and resources to do things the right way. Konami and the team behind the remake surely don’t.

Gotta say ,when you said this game doesn't have a quick turn I kind of lost interest in your opinions on the series.
After you get the strongest guns in the game. The best part after the game becomes an arcade shooter and man does it get fun from there seeing how fast you can mow things down taking in the sights....looking around watching enemies struggle to pick up ashley.

I love the remake. I'm not sure if I'll ever unlock everything because my OCD restricts me from not exploring and picking up every single item. I do love how they added the WiSH version of The Undertaker.

Everyone seems to hate that RE3 remake is different from the original. But I can't wait to see people's reaction to RE5, because you know Capcom are going to change that entire game, and thank god for that. Honestly I'd rather have a Resident Evil 1 remake even if the GameCube version is really good.

19:07 More like mythology reference, because while it was name-dropped, this version of the event is much different. Instead of Leon coming with him, Krauser went with an unit of elite soldiers instead. What happened is very vague, so it's only known that the unit was wiped out except Krauser, and it could be prevent if the government sent a helicopter to them, but they didn't, so he left the government out of resentment. In the original event, Leon and Krauser encounter Manuela, the daughter of cartel leader. It turned out she has a incurable disease, and her father use the t-veronica and kidnapped young girls for transpantation to prevent her from transforming. Krauser's motivation in the original is the combination of awe from BOW of that event and jealousy toward Leon as a favorable agent for the president. It was ironic that Leon's encouragement for Manuela to live for the dead girls indirectly supplemented his disdain for Leon's denial of BOW.

how do people keep thinking there is no quick turn in this game? I swear I accidentally quick turn in every encounter!
I'm halfway through and so far it seems the boss fights have been shortened and simplified a bit. I miss the moment where you find a locked door that hinted at an eye being the key, then you beat Mendez, find his eye and think yeah that must be it. Now it's just a generic treasure you can sell. Some ladders you use to be able to kick down can no longer be kicked for some reason. I'm trying to knock enemies down on the ladder and instead I jump straight out the window. These details missing bug me.
RE4R might be one of the best games of the year I’ve played. And there’s honestly not alot I’m looking forward to this year imo.

One thing you forgot to mention about Leon being infected by the parasite, as you get further into the game you'll see signs of the infection on Leon, like his veins turning black
RE5 Remake is the worst case scenario? I'd love next gen Wesker.
He meant that in relation to expanding on the umbrella storyline and particularly what happened in between the og trilogy and 4, a CV remake could tie umbrella fall and would be best case, worst case the story just continues with separate ways and a 5 remake, not that that would be bad
Many people have probably already mentioned but the RE4 remake does have a quick turn, or at least im pretty sure it does. I just pressed back and R (dash button for me).
I gotta disagree, RE3 is my all time favorite Re in existence, and Re3REmake was the worst feeling i ever had playing. RE2 was made with love, RE3 is a cashgrab it’s not hard to admit that.
Given escort missions are possible the worst missions ever made in video games next to untracked 100 item collections, I think making the danger to Ashley nearly 0 in Standard or Assisted difficulty was a smart move. Getting the Knight Armour unlock was also in the original and basically nullified any danger to Ashley so I think just making protecting her less of a focus with these more aggressive enemies was the best option.
Actually protect her is fun especially cuz of her personality in remake, but i see you, and i like to escort actually, but i do not like these missions but in Re4remake i actually found it fun, yeah with armor it is alot easier but the purpose is just gone
I know it’s been 7 months, but honestly I feel like escorting Ashely is more annoying in the remake with how the ai works.
I really hope that Capcom considers Code Veronica Remake.

You said that red robes make the "virus" affect the gameplay. You mean the parasite, right? And maybe check the controls before playing because this game has a quickturn, the default being left stick back and R1.
What do you mean no quick turn? On PC it's bound to Q by default.
I played the original YEARS ago, before RE 7 came out. It was my primary game in those early years of interest with the franchise, but I did sit down and watch a lot of the old games. I was INTERESTED, and 4 was by all means a very fun game for me. The main issue I had with it typically was the length, and of course later parts of castle and most of the Island. The Village was where the game felt closest to the "horror" I really saw the series more for. 5 had some iconic scenes and ideas, but it never interested me beyond the Co-Op ideas. 6... Well, the opinion people have on 6 is REALLY where you see the fan base totally split up.
I respect if you can enjoy the whole MCU style interconnected universe with a lot of stuff going on ALL the time. The cast of characters ARE interesting, and I see the appeal in seeing where characters started and where they ended up. I'm not going to play dumb and say that RE4 was the FIRST RE game that started the action trends that evolved to basically divide the fanbase. My take is that Resident Evil is best where things FEEL more grounded. Yes, the boulder punching scene is hilarious, but campy dude-bro action just doesn't do much for me, and I don't think Resident Evil can do it well without falling into high-end absurdity. Absurdity is to be expected in the franchise, but the original 4 popularized an escalating trend. I PLAYED 6, but I could NOT get into the long form story it was going for. Action set pieces sadly don't deactivate my brain like that.
No, it's after RE 7, more prominent in 2 remake and village, WHAT I feel an RE game IS. It's grounded stories about people who, for one reason or another, HAVE to go through with the insane hurdles in their path. Characters who find themselves challenged by these bio-weapons that make their personal journeys all the more difficult. The original RE 4 was influential, and will likely have left a larger impact on the medium of gaming as a whole than this remake will. As a fan of Resident Evil though? I'm not asking for an influential game, I just want a solid RE game. And that's what I am certain this game delivered.

I’m not usually one of those people who prefers the original just for the sake of ‘it’s older so it’s better’. But to me the original is a gem, a classic and is almost perfect, it’d be like remaking the first Bioshock or Metal Gear Solid 3, those games are perfect and a remake will never be able to touch how great the original is or was.
Put silent hill 2 on that list as well I suppose

I played OG re 4 so many hours it would be embarrassing to try and calculate, it shaped my adolescence. But I’m also a person who fucking hates nostalgia, so I went into the remake with an open mind and honestly, for me it stands higher than the original. Some of the improvements they made to this game are mind-boggling, just so damn good. And the vast improvements outweigh the downgrades in every way.
The quick turn is in the RE4 remake. Just press RB/R1 and back on the left joystick. Boom, quick turn. I understand why no one knows this, the game doesn't tell you you can do this unless you go into the options menu to look at the controls.

🐱 I went in with the same mentality, I didn't think the remake would be as good since the original was so much fun and re4 VR made it amazing! But after playing it I prefer the remake over the original. But I like that it's different enough so original RE4 still is worth keeping, seriously RE4 VR is the best Quest 2 game !! ✨
Pfft original game has better and more charismatic characters (with the only possible exceptions of ashley and luis), more contents, better boss fights, the remake is worth playing but honestly isn't even close to be as fun to play as the original was and still is to this day.

@@thestrong2401 Nah, remake has better story, combat, stealth mechanics, parry system, deepened lore, more puzzles, side quests, new brute enemies, expanded gun range, better gore, limb dismemberment, new treasure combining system, revamped Ashley segment, new weapons, better enemy AI, attaché case charms, and some new mini bosses.
Watch Gaming Harry’s analysis of the remake. The lore and character development is WAY more fleshed out in the remake, by a wide margin. Characters like Luis and Krauser have a more compelling backstory and characterization than before, and get more screen time as well.
The nostalgia in some parts of the fanbase is completely out of control, lmao.

The remake implements more player choice and decision making that make it feel a little more like a survival horror game. The treasure combining system gives players the choice of what types and colors of gems to combine with their loot. Crafting forces the player to decide what type of ammo and resources are needed for each situation. The knives are more capable but have durability, so do I break free from a grab or stab the enemy? Do I try dodging a chainsaw attack or parrying it? Do I approach an encounter with stealth or guns blazing? Should I use regular bolts or attach a mine? It’s much more engaging and adds a lot of planning and strategy that the OG didn’t quite have.

I have finished Re 4 original multiple times. Is it worth for my money to play its remake?
I rather enjoy the game the only thing that I'm not really loving though is that the kicks seemed less impactful when I'm trying to knock back several enemies like in the original and the zombie dogs teeth look Goofy. Still a solid remake though.
they definitely nerfed the kicks and buffed the enemies stun threshold, I think its random now how many shots you need to stun one after a headshot or knee shot which makes your melee use more unpredictable, I think its a decent change since it was a bit broken on the og, but you lose some of the cheese potential and feeling of complete mastery of game mechanics

The kicks definitely “feel” and “sound” more impactful in the remake, and they’ve even added a greater variety of them. You can even hear bones crunching when kicking certain enemies. In the remake you can also kick them against walls and follow up with a stab attack, which is badass. I feel like the rebalancing of them makes the game more challenging, especially because the new enemy AI is smarter and more aggressive than the original.

Time will tell which of the two is the preferred version. I prefer the original because it feels way more like an arcade shooter that is never boring.

Good things about the remake: Some plot points making more sense (such as Leon now being fluent in Spanish)
Bad things about the remake: Worse voice actors, worse physical appearances of characters, Ashley being voiced by a rugmuncher, removed iconic scenes and quotes
