How To: Patch the hood on the AMT 1970 Challenger RT

  • I recently built the AMT 1970 Challenger RT Vanishing Point kit. Here is how I filled in the hole in the hood. This is the extra hood that was from the Yankee Challenge version. I like this hood better, but it has the hole in it. I'm replacing the hood I originally built as I forgot to remove the hood pins.

Watching from Tucson, AZ. I don't build automotive models, I build 1/35 Armour, but I enjoy watching your channel and seeing the techniques you employ, which I can apply to my modeling builds.

Glad to see you used super glue around the seam instead of all putty. Nothing is worse than having done all that work and ending up later with that dreaded " Ghost Seam " popping up ! Nice job and great tip .

I have had that Ghost Seam happen to me. I haven’t had that happen with this Tamiya Polyester putty. But it has happened with Testor’s and Squadron putty to me. I don’t know if it’s the type of putty or if the primer becomes a barrier. But the ghosting seems to be the putty swelling after it has hardened and only appears months later. I’m not sure why that happens.
Also I wonder is the super glue helps create a barrier on the back end. When I took real auto body shop classes. I learned that when using filler. All holes must be welded shut on steel. Any filler seeping through holes will absorb moisture, swell and even promote rust. Even on fiberglass it could swell and become visible. Plus it should not be more than 1/4 inch thick max. Higher quality fillers are more resistant to this swelling.

Excellent process. The hood I did a couple years ago looked like crap. Definitely going to try this method.👍

My VP kits came with two hoods. One with blower hole, hood pins and Dodge letters. The other one is solid with no hood pins and Dodge letters.

Both of my VP kits have that hood as well without the hole. It works fine but just doesn’t look as good as this hood does to me. So I chose to fill the hole.

    Very nice
I did the same thing on a revell monogram 70 chevelle hood to make it a stock malibu
One thing i did different though i made the part to fill in about a hair bigger and sanded the edges to a curve and glued it from the inside when it was flush as much as possible
Then used a slight amount of putty to sand flat
The less putty is the less of a chance of cracking

Thanks. Yes, having as much support under the putty is important.

Also the monogram late versions '69 super bee kits, blower hood can be made into a stock coronet hood, but you have to rework the wind split down the middle..

Some Early VP Versions Had 3 Hoods One Had Blower Hole &:Without Hole & Shaker Option Hood Also Surprised You Didn't use Sprue Rod Putty to Do Fill Work on hood Piece Gap

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

I have not found one with three hoods yet. Only the early kits with Shaker only, then Yankee Challenge kits with the hole. Then VP without the Shaker but two RT hoods. One with hole and the much more edgy RT without hole, Dodge letters and no hood pins. That last hood works but I just don’t like it as much as this hood.

Great video as usual sir!! Any hints on how to do a non flat surface?.... like maybe a stock 65 corvette hood that was setup for a blower? :)

Just find some plastic that has a similar shape. If the Corvette hood is a 65 small block hood. Maybe splice in a section from an AMT 63 Corvette hood.

What grit sandpaper did you use to sand the putty on the hood.

I use 80-120 but light pressure from my hand.
