    "comparing your animation to your old works" when you're still making your first animation...

    • @HowardWimshurst

      so you're comparing it to... Nothing. Is the animation better than nothing? Absolutely! Well done. Now make another one
      Your first attempt at anything will always be a wild stab into the dark. Be brave

    Great vid, bro. I suffer from all of those except the 7th point. I never plagiarize. I REALLY suffer from the 8th point. I think that's my biggest problem. We get so caught up in the youtube viewership aspect of it all that we forget to have fun, and that's the whole point of it, or atleast it should be.

      ayyy, almost the same here, but since I don't care about earning money or anything, I don't have to make as much stuff as I can, so if I try to make an animation, and don't like tha idea, I'll just start a new one.

    My biggest problems currently are 4, 5 and sometimes 8 if I work on my largest "project". The lack of motivation is something caused mainly by school and time management, but now I think I got around that too and can concentrate on animating my projects from start to finish.

    1:
    If you are discouraged even after not progressing as quickly as you'd hoped, that means you don't have a good enough focus, in which case, you'd need to either find a way to increase it through some needs or quit trying altogether, and you _don't_ want to do the latter. Goals and plans are often suggested means to improve them, but there are others.
    2:
    Comparing yourself to other artists is one of the best means to learn. Doing this not only helps you know what works and what doesn't, it also allows you to pick up new techniques you may not had thought of otherwise.
    Again, if you get discouraged as the result, you don't have a good enough focus.
    3:
    Animation is like all art. As such, this advice can be applied to anything besides animation. If you don't have a poorly thought-out ending, however (or pretty much poorly thought-out anything), that means you're doing it wrong, plain and simple. This doesn't apply to improper planning since it's possible to create masterpieces entirely through improvisation, which, by its very definition, makes them improperly planned.
    4:
    No matter the reason, if you're putting things off, that's procrastinating, plain and simple. It applies as much to animation as everything else. Therefore, if you're the type to put off making animations, you may not have the right attitude.
    5:
    Again, if you're hitting a slump in motivation, you don't have the right focus.
    6:
    Style is supposed to be in support of the work, not in support of yourself. Seriously, I see this sort of advice all the time.
    Style, as mentioned here, is only used as an excuse to draw in a certain way. This sort of attitude misses the point on what you're supposed to be doing: projecting thoughts through your work.
    7:
    Plagiarizing makes you a thief, not an animator (or artist). This is technically not a pitfall anymore than not being considerate.
    8:
    If you're not enjoying the end result even after having the right focus, that means you were focussing on the wrong things. You need keen focus in order to do art, and you need to be able to focus on the right things. If you think this is simple, think again, for animating, as with all art, requires plentiful of careful thought.

      KarjamP great!

    • @theo4991
      @theo4991 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Interesting perspectives! However, I wouldn't say focus is always the biggest problem. Discouragement can come from being so focused on the end goal that you forget about enjoying the process, which is required, and which demands time before it can be rewarding. It can be because people forget, like he said, to enjoy themselves with it, and to not be so totally drawn into the need to improve. Sometimes people need to focus on improving a bit less in order to be motivated, to give themselves time and the room to explore and actually try new things.
      Referencing and identifying inspirations is one thing, but I think the comparison he is referring to is the comparison that's used to judge your value as an artist, not just to have someone to look up to. It's, unfortunately, a very thin line between what is healthy and unhealthy when it comes to comparing.
      But yes to plagiarism being taken more seriously! People don't realize it's illegal because it's a bit hard to take action when it comes to an online space, but agreed, it needs to really be called what it is.

    • @KarjamP
      @KarjamP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amanda Carvalho
      Do not underestimate the power of one's focus and the impact it has on one's life, for focus is really the ability to sort through your own thoughts, to toss out the bad ones in favour of the thoughts you'd want to keep.
      If you don't enjoy the process, you don't have the right focus. Plain and simple. To focus correctly involves having a clear mind while doing so. In fact, to strain yourself while attempting to focus actually proves you don't know how to do so properly.
      Under your second point, that is, to use comparisons as a means of judging value, I was talking about this as well. If you get discouraged when comparing your work to others, not only is your focus ability not strong enough, you may also have a fear for failure, something no one looking to improve themselves should have.

    • @souronion906
      @souronion906 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think this video was meant to help encourage new animators to not have a fear of failure, to find their own styles and build their own career in animation rather than relying on others. It's nice to look up to someone once in a while, and to take inspiration from. But when that turns into thinking you are not good enough and looking at other animations while seeing the strengths in them and the weaknesses in your own, then that is what loses the focus, self-esteem, and motivation in your work.

    • @KarjamP
      @KarjamP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nat Hays
      All of which, can be avoided if you know how to focus. Really, no matter its original intent, an advice that's deceptively flawed in some way is still that.
      These sorts of "motivational" tips, even things like "start on smaller projects instead of bigger ones", are all attempts of making things easier for a beginner's lack of proper focus, where in fact, they just provide a sense of false security. In the case of "start on smaller projects", what's to say you don't feel discouraged if you follow that adivce? After all, you're still doing something that could potentially hamper it instead of help. Even if you do succeed on your smaller projects, you'd still need to do those of a bigger scope some day in the future. ("Experience" only goes so far within this context. As what many people were to tell you, those thoughts never disappear. This is why you need a proper ability to focus.)
      (By the way, "style" is meant to be in support of the work itself, not for yourself. Sticking to one "style" severely limits your potential. Not even the great animators do this. Yes. they have a "default artstyle" (which they use if they're just drawing more casualy), but when the need arises for their work, they will switch.
      "Style" used in that manner is just the artist trying to make excuses for drawing a certain way. If you look closely at their work, you'd notice that auch artists are either using formulas in order to draw (rather than just merely projecting their thoughts as what one's supposed to do), they're not fully aware of what they're doing or both. Even those who pride themselves as teachers fall under one of these two categories, their advice being flawed as a result.)

He pushes us to do what he wants, and he oftenly shouts at us and makes us feel miserable. Many people from my class wish to leave the school so they can leave him. I myself, am afraid of his anger and thats why i actually hate his clasess, i dont hate animation, but with him i just feel unmotivated, forced, and just unwilling to do anything

      The best thing you can do to get back at him is to not let him win. Hold onto your passion and don't let him stamp all over it. Become the best artist you can be, despite all the efforts he has made to kill your passion.

    Awesome video. I've recently started delving into animation. I always thought that doing the actual animation work would be something that would bore me. Drawing each individual frame/cell was always a drawback to actually doing it because I thought I didn't have the patience for it. But after creating my first rough animation sequence (emphasis on rough) I have fallen head over heels with the process and I have learned A LOT in just a few months. I've even received a few requests from potential clients to do animation work (something i'm not quit ready for yet). I do think you hit on a very key point in your video to work on things that you find interesting or inspiring (or something to that end). I'm currently working to bring my comic book to animation even if i have to do it myself and I am loving the process of it. It can be tedious and draining and incredibly frustrating at times but if it's something that you love to do you will work past those obstacles. Thanks for the video.

    Pitfalls for me in 2d animation (i have been animating for 1 day and am on day 5 of learning)
    - getting lost in the software
    -not learning / knowing the most efficient ways to do something (whether it is built in tweening etc. tools within the software or just not knowing the easiest way to do something in the software like creating a new frame, or scrubbing using a scroll bar etc)
    -disorganized learning notes
    -not following my arcs/lines of action
    -missing/glossing over key frames, extremes, or breakdowns and then jumping into timing the animation too soon without those ^^ critical elements (going back and adding them sucks)
    - getting lost within the sense of where I want the animation to go / or flow of motion to go mid-animating (flipping helps)
    - getting stuck between either onion-skinning and flipping without knowing the best one for each type of situation
    -staying on model (can usually be avoided by making really solid / consistent A and B keys)
    -not taking breaks and coming back to it later to discover flaws
    -focusing on too much too soon (like hair flow / bounce in a secondary action before finalizing the main poses within the action)

    Thank god I have 10 years and am over the beginning stages here, when there’s no time I try to make time by drawing. I am proud to say I have done all but plagiarize, I’m loving this video, you woke me up to my dumb young 11-18 year old self lol, I have settled down on focusing on the animating by itself like it was in the beginning, after taking classes for creative writing and animation, ten years for development of my one story and adding new shows and characters to the universe! (2008-present and future) my history of animating was horrific lol but it is going to be worth it someday, I’m proud of the passion and just settling down to just making a good story along with my own style that could be. Recognized like the Simpsons (but not the simpsons but like Matt Groening started in the past, something to stand out)

      I guess you need to overcome the fear of making something bad
      You could try to make something bad and show it around - you would realize that it doesn't change much and it is not that bad. from there you can only surprise people with how good your next work is

    good vid, but isn't that 8 big mistakes, not 5?

    • @HowardWimshurst
      @HowardWimshurst  8 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      marketing tip: use prime numbers in titles where you can
      I gave 5 mistakes + 3 bonus mistakes

    • @vraisairs9201
      @vraisairs9201 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh. interesting. that actually makes sense. I'm really glad it wasn't just a counting mistake

    • @SoulGuitarMetal
      @SoulGuitarMetal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, it doesn't make sense. I hate inaccurate counter when the number is already know, 330+, more than 5, 1200 when it's 1187. Titles with "...", "How to make ....", "Tutorial for beginnings about ...".
      We are going to a dark era of haziness in web design because some market guy prefer to suggest and send subliminal messages rather begin straight.
      Btw, thanks for the tips.

    I agree in everything he have said! I experience many of the pitfalls. well, I am not an animator [yet] but I am wondering to be one. Even in making some drawings which I visualize but because of lack of skill makes me frustrated. The feeling of loosing the self-steem; "I think I can't bla bla bla." But that is a BIG MISTAKE. Instead of digrsting the mistake, oneself should focus on just doing whatevet he or she is doing. Just like what Howard said, "ENJOY THE PROCESS". Whenever I look at what I did, copied or my own art works makes me feel happy and get that sense of Achivement. I have my own style yet I tend to set that aside because I wanted to be as good as others. then again, they have also once in their life experienced the ugly or very amature/bigginers level. If you read this who wishes to be an animator or an artist in whatever fortei, RESET your brain. Whatever dream we want to achieve there is a process. let us unit our hearts in full filling our dreams. step one back, look at the goal, and run for that.
    It would also be helpful to change our Handwriting. Watch GRAPHOLOGY Videos. :-)
    Thank you very much for this video because I muself feels down because of my impferfection which I should have not be feeling for I am a begginer. The training for animation for free os far away from my hands but hopefully it will be reachable in soonest time.
    We are Genius in our own right!
