im halfway through the video as im typing this, and i gotta say this in-depth tutorial was really helpful :) i could use this logic if I wanted to make a comic too thanks a lot !! this really helped
This tutorial is so great that i'm using a real muay thai roundhouse kick as reference and your video to make it technically and visually powerfull... in 3D!
bro plzzz make a video on animating a scene in depth i know u have made one but plzzz make one more nd it should be precised thnx in advance u r awesome
My fight scene is taking place while the me and the antagonist are in the gravitational suction of a black hole, which Void Steve (the antagonist in the fight, who can control things like black holes and destruction, as he is the embodiment of the Void, which is the Minecraft equivalent of a black hole.) occasionally parkouring onto another big chunk of his evil lair (You really didn't think about that one, did you, Void Steve? XD Actually, I do kind of trick him into making the black hole, thinking it would collapse on him if he got sucked in) whenever the one we're fighting on gets too small for combat? Any tips?
This is such an incredible video! you are so learned in the fine art of animation, thanks for sharing your skills I was just wondering where the video about how to animate the person being punched is or if there isn't one I'd love to see one don't worry if u don't have time tho :)
I really like the way you draw and make nice action shots, coming to the point 4:15 the first drawn pose I felt the wrong way. The way you were explaining about force, that's really very helpful. But looking at that pose will not be technically right. How the human body punches with the right hand and kipping its right leg forward... It's incorrect and especially if you are talking about power punch... For that, your left leg should come front. Please kindly give your opinion.
that one was my deliberate bad example. I tried to make that one not powerful or impactful but also note that a good punch in animation is different from a good punch in boxing or MMA
Howard's a better animator and makes better animation tutorials, but I think jazza does a more wide variety of things so you can't really compare the two channels.
Hey um... Im in high school ATM moment and I'm doing a project that involves me making an animation that will involve a fight scene, full body animation and other sorts of movement, but then again I'm scared it will turn out horribly because it's my first time animating on a computer... Got any advice...?
I know this is picky. But from a technical punching standpoint whenever that back foot leaves the ground and is dragged forward, a ton of the force is lost. This video on punching with energy is terrible punching technique and just makes me cringe. If I saw a guy at my MMA gym throwing punches like this, someone would pull him aside and really work on his fundamentals, because his technique is almost completely wrong. Horrible punches that would do no damage.
I like your videos a lot and don't want this to come off as complaining. And I admit that I can't animate for shiiiiii, but wouldn't it be a better technique to focus on learning how to draw something as it is? Punches themselves already look devastating, why change them? The way you're animating a punch with energy is actually a punch with almost no energy. Most of the power in a punch comes from firmly planted feet and torquing your hips. Overextending a punch to the point of coming off balance portrays very poor fighting prowess. So you are in some essence teaching viewers to punch improperly or turning people who know how to punch against your character. Take the recent use of Jiu Jitsu in Attack on Titan, the main character uses actual jiu jitsu techniques(with some exaggeration) and they look outstanding. Other animes like cowboy bebop use mostly correct technique and still show power. I would say that you did animate a character showing a punch with energy... if the person throwing the punch had no idea how to punch. The narrative that punch creates could be used for a character that does not know how to punch, but really wouldn't look good if used by a character who is supposed to know how to fight. Apologies, but as an avid kick boxer and general fight fan, this really bugged me. Huge fan of your videos though!
yes of course, I think it can look great to study professional athletes. I'm a fan of boxing. I agree with most of what you're saying. It's great to be informed by different fighting styles and even better to get real experience in fights. I'm always looking to improve my animation ability, although I have moved away from making fight animations. And the examples you listed are great examples. I study them too. First of all let me throw my hands up and fully admit that the punch I animated int he video isn't the best animated punch or anything close to it. I don't claim to be any good at this stuff. I'm just here trying to work it out and I record myself so that other people can learn with me. I'm insignificant compared to the animators you mentioned. I look back at this video I made and I think that now I could make a much better punch. But I think for the purposes of the video, it works just fine at demonstrating what i'm talking about. Because it is compared to a simple punch in the beginning. I'm sorry it bugged you. At the same time, I think you're too focused on a fight's accuracy to real life instead of the portrayal of a fight. And at times your criticism just isn't fair. I'm into boxing. I'm also into Wushu. Wushu is more the display of fighting than actual combat itself. And on Wushu videos you always see the same arguments being thrown around by people attacking the sport because this or that technique wouldn't work "on the street". It is a display. It is closer to dancing than fighting. You are also criticising the punch saying that he doesn't look like he knows how to throw a punch... but did I say that he does? Was that part of the character? What is the title of the video? Not how to throw a punch with correct technique and realistic form. I would never ever make a video with a title like that. Firstly I'm not an expert, and secondly, I'm not at all interested with perfectly copying real life. Life is there to be interpreted. Try rotoscoping what you think is the most powerful real life punch in the world. You can't get any more accurate than rotoscoping. I can find you an inaccurate animated punch that will FEEL ten times harder. Writing this comment was probably a waste of time. I probably sound like an ass. I should just take criticism next time even if I strongly disagree with it. I'm just having a bad night. I already regret responding. Have a good night, no hard feelings
Ah, please don't feel bad! You do not sound like an ass and I appreciate you taking the time to respond! Your videos have provided me with a great deal of information. I am not an animator but I am teaching myself how to draw in general. I spend a lot of time drawing out proper stance and technique because I'm a nerd and a visual learner. My hope is that by drawing the action I can dig it into my head when I'm not actually doing it. I fully understand that animators don't stick to drawing directly from reality. I watch a ton of animes and animated shows that don't do this and still look outstanding. Maybe the comment was unnecessary and saying that it bugged me doesn't mean that it pissed me off, just that it made me wanna argue i guess. Your advice is super beneficial and your presentation is entertaining. I hope you don't take my criticism harshly, you are a wonderful animator and a solid youtuber Hope your night gets better! Now I'm going to go watch some more of your videos and not bug you in the comments haha.

I noticed that in some anime like dragaon ball the camera shakes do that the tension developed more
yeah they sure like their camera shake

This is so counter intuitive to anyone who fights lol
So many animation companies still fail this today, really ruins entire episodes if not the entire show 😖
Why don't you discuss background creation? Maybe Perspective? Things like that.
i've been getting a lot of requests for perspective so I will probably make one in the near future
