It would have been great to see these two renew their rivalry in the Derby. Many have said they believe Brigadier Gerard wouldn't have 'got the trip' at Epsom. I believe to the contrary, but, alas, we'll never know. I recall giving my older brother all my pocket money (about 75p) to put on Mill Reef to win the Derby and was made-up to get back around £3 which was an absolute fortune for a 10 year old boy. Happy days indeed.
@@damienwhitston1758 Hi Damien, Quite agree with you sir. Fabulous class racing then and Henry Cecil was my favourite trainer. My favourites were Kris and Wollow who sadly never lived up to his potential. Also Henry was a gentleman and modest too. The great Brigadier Gerard was Momentous and Joe Mercer knew him 'inside n out. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝
Joe Mercer was right up there with Piggott, two of the greatest jockeys ever to ride, was a pleasure to watch them on two of my favourite horses of all time, Brigadier Gerrard and Nijinsky , unforgettable memories, R.I.P Joe 🙏.
I wonder how many of you knew Joe Mercer had a brother called Manny who was also a jockey. He was killed at Ascot racecourse when his horse reared up fell over backwards and kicked him in the head. I believe he was 30 years old.
Brigadier Gerard, a champion of champions. Grand sire to the great Lord at War who’s offspring have won multiple Kentucky Derby’s and Breeders Cups races, not to mention Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. What a horse BG was. Awesome kick late.
@@owlofminerva2564 I heard that Mr Hislop had a hand in his not being a great stallion by not allowing him to cover overseas mares I don't remember where I came by this it was over 20 years ago. Brigadier Gerard is my favorite racehorse the only one close to him in my favorites is Seattle Slew I moved to the U.S just in time to see him start out as a 2year old then sweep the Triple Crown, he was a machine who was not handled the best.
The debate about which horse would have won over 10f rages on . It would be a matter of ground conditions : good or good to firm - Brigadier Gerard ; on soft or good to soft - Mill Reef . Let's leave it to Mill Reefs jockey , Geoff Lewis , who said : " Brigadier Gerard is the best miler I have ever seen : if they had both met at a mile and a quarter, I cannot say for certain that my little horse would have beaten the Brigadier at that distance - it would have been very close .

Done my "Cahoonas" on Mill Reef that day , re-grouped and got it all back and buttloads more at Epsom , John Banks on course was offering 4/1 up to the off , still paying out at 5:00 pm , not sure he was ever the same again
Great race but El Gran Senor was a superior miler. His effortless Guineas victory was one of the greatest of all time. He routed 2 other unbeaten colts and Chief Singer (2nd) was so speedy that he won the July Cup over 6 furlongs and won the St. James Palace- the Ascot Mile showpiece- by 8 lengths in a canter. El Gran Senor was a machine over a mile/mile and a quarter.
Exciting race, but Ive watched Racing many years and Imho Frankel is the greatest miler. Overall I believe mill reef was better than the brigadier, its a shame they never met again but I honestly believe over ten or twelve furlongs Mill Reef would have been victorious.
Absolute champion's, Brigadier Gerard & Joe Mercer, the both of them. RIP Joe.
And Dick Hern of course they were a great combination. Some wonderful horses trained by the Major.
Best 2 000 Guineas i ve ever seen , Brigadier Gérard , Mill Reef who won a Derby and an Arc and My Swallow was a good horse in his own right .
Best race horse I’ve ever seen. Fond memories of the Brigadier and Joe Mercer.
Great horse race, Joe always so stylish in the saddle, great days of horses and jockeys from a wonderful era RIP Joe.

Even though Brigadier Gérard won over 12f his best trip was definitely 10f.
Lovely thoughts brings back a lot of great memories my great memory was the ONE AND ONLY HENRY CECIL (SIR) R. I. P. MR CECIL

Great footage of a great horse, thanks for the post.

The Brigadier was the greatest horse all time.
Great ride by smoking Joe.

This is by far the most stylish riding from old footage I've seen. Ahead of his time!
BEFORE HIS TIME... THE BRIGADIER YOU GOT IT PAL 100%
In my opinion, Brigadier Gerard is the only true champion to beat a horse as good as himself, Mill Reef.
One of the best fields of all time , two 140 plus horses.
I wonder how many of you knew Joe Mercer had a brother called Manny who was also a jockey. He was killed at Ascot racecourse when his horse reared up fell over backwards and kicked him in the head. I believe he was 30 years old.
What a horse Mill Reef was, but the Brigadier left him in the dust here.

Though as a sire he was a terrible disappointment. It happens, and doesn't take away from his achievements on the track which are unsurpassed.

To beat Mill Reef and Lester Piggott, is something to remember.

To have both primed to race at 10 furlongs on good ground would have been interesting.
Looked like Mill Reef ran the race to beat My Swallow... underestimated the Brigadier.

EGS best miler ever
rip Joe
I have a portrait of the head of Brigadier Gerard …..probably the most beautiful looking horse ever
"As one rather expected they would"

Tony Cooke top commentator
Second best miler ever. Only EGS could give a race to The Brigadier.
Better than Frankel
i think, Minski might win it

Who is the terrible caller?
Actually a Very Good commentator
John Rickman commentator was a very knowledgeable man and was innovative as a commentator like Peter O'Sullevan in the late 60s onwards.
The commentator is Tony Cooke who was top notch , Peter OSullivan rated him highly
