Laura O Brien Hi Laura, yes if it had been on this year Tiger roll would be trying to win it 3 years in a row but who knows he might be back next year not sure yet. They did do the 2020 virtual Grand national and he came 4th what a great horse though!
@@lauraobrien5686 Tiger Roll is a fantastic little horse in the mould of Rummy, but I doubt even he could have achieved what the greatest Red Rum did over those momentous fences all those years ago.
My favorite moment in sports history. But you cannot beat the commentary which sums it all up. "The 12 year old RedRum coming along in great style... The crowd willing him along. You've never heard the likes of it at Liverpool..." It is fitting that they buried Red Rum at the finish line at Aintree. Legend.
Every time I watch Red Rums national victories I get very emotional. The fences on the Aintree course now are nothing like they were then. I don't think there will be another horse like him. 5 times he ran it and never fell! A true hero, love him.
"...They're willing him home now!" Like Kenneth Wolstenholme's "They think it's all over..." is one of the most iconic commentaries in sporting history. Superb stuff.
Never be a Horse like Rummy, always will be the best National horse ever. 3 1sts and 2 2nds, Peters commentary, the crowd when jumping the last. always tear in my eye.
+Andy Sutton ..and not forgetting his record-breaking performance in '74 when winning the Grand National AND the Scottish Grand National in just one season!
After this Grand National, Boom Docker was sent to my old Trainer Michael Masson to help coax him back into jumping and I was given the task of schooling him! We just did it quietly by popping him over the some straw bales then over the hurdles and then finally we took him off to Plumpton to school him over the fences and I still get goose bumps when I remember coming up to the first fence and expecting him to put in another couple of strides like all the other horses around me but he just took off into the air and I thought we're not gonna make it but he landed as far the other side as he took off from and all I really had to do was sit tight over the rest of the fences! He was by far the best jumper I ever sat on and will never forget him and will always wonder what might have been had he not refused in 77? But then again if he'd had kept going, I would never have got to ride him!
Hard to say what made him refuse,he was jumping brilliantly,as he obviously did for you.Now the previous year he had been brought down at 2nd bechers but i think if he would have made it that far he would have got a place,i dont think he would have beat Red Rum,hard to say about Churchtown Boy but im sure hed have got 3rd.Shame he refused though,it always leaves you wondering

What a fabulous beast. !! And a tremendous moment that brings tears to ones eyes. An historic victory - for an amazing (g)race horse. Redrum - A True Legend !! Peace !! Rxx
I think most of us know that the feat that Red Rum achieved in winning his third Grand National will never be equalled much less surpassed. Who could have imagined that when he dead-heated in a selling plate at the age of two in 1967, ten years later he would make Grand National history?
Rummy was special, wasn't he?! He had the biggest heart of any racing horse, and he loved hearing the crowd. Many of those whom don't bet always follow the national, and Rummy played his part in that. There's not many who don't know about the great horse in the UK. He set a record never to be broken.
Helene Millar Most definitely! No racehorse is more loved, and he loved his crowd back. I loved the way he'd prick his ears on the final straight, Rummy knew he was special and well loved. I went to 2011 National, and standing near his grave while seeing Ballabriggs romp home and imagining Rummy gave me chills. His aura is still felt there after all these years. Not to discredit other legendary horses, but I suppose it's that reason as to why Aintree has the privilege of being the burial place of the only, and its most valued, racehorse.
I've yet to have the honour of visiting Rummy's final resting place, but it's definitely on my 'to-do' list for next year! As you say, a very fitting place for such a well-loved and most illustrious Aintree performer to be buried, his head of course, facing the winning post. God bless the King of Aintree!
Of 3 horses that stick in my mind with there story's simula styles, red rum and Seabiscuit match up as they both inspired hope to a nation and had some sort of foot/leg complaint and were slightly smaller than the average horse, and secretariat and red rum share a unbelievable race record and there poseing ability and charisma and grace all 3 match in simula ways regardless of debate the only difference is red rum would of really given the two Americans a run for there money because the two Americans did not have jumps rummy did have jumps
Brilliant commentary rip sir Peter osullivan and rip Julian Wilson.. There virtually the only ones left in the 1977 grand national no one will ever witness such a great grand national only will ever be one red rum the greatest horse and the greatest commentator sir p osullivan
Just got myself a photo of Tommy and Rummy going over the final fence in the the 77. Used to have some photos which Billy Ellison, one of the stable lads gave me, but sadly , lost them during one of my many house moves😢 Got a Rummy t shirt in the mail soon as well ✊💙Loved that horse, and love the National!!!
Something special about these creatures called horse super super go red rum a legend forever never to be forgotten timeless will always live deep in our hearts, A brave and courageous beautiful horse that only comes once in a lifetime 5 times he ran the National wining 3 what an amazing achievement even till this day we are amazed by him really glad able to see him on youtube and appreciate what a wonderful horse he was
Everybody in that crowd, no matter which horse they’d bet on, was cheering and willing him to win. I was ten years old and, forty seven years later, I still remember this race and crying when he won. Greatest race horse of all time. ❤
Always have a tear in my eye when I watch Red Rum win this race, what a magnificent horse, so much respect for him and Tommy Stack who respected him by not using the whip.
Watched his first win with my granddad. Watched his second win with my granddad. He missed a year but I’m a psychic kinda person and I was only four or 5 around this time. And, don’t forget, he didn’t win the one before this… so, my granddad always used to ask me who might win the race (we watched a lot of races together)… I KNEW this was Red Rum’s THIRD. Fitting that he is buried at the last post at Aintree because (I don’t even like horses) HE HAD CHARACTER! A proper kind horse and entertainer. He was a gorgeously kind horse and a wonderful sports horse. A fantastic creature. I watched every race and predicted he’d win from day one. The first time RR won, I was only 3 years old.
It's interesting if you watch his win in '74, very sparse crowds along the rails on the run-in compared to here. He really did help save the race in it's darkest days.
Excellent memories from my childhood. You can imagine what Boom Docker was thinking when he refused at the 17th.... "sod this, I ain't going around again" lol.
Sebastian IV (1st time) and Andy Pandy (2nd) both fell at Bechers. Completed the course apart from the last 2 fences which they ran around and led rummy up to the line. A Scottish National and a Whitbread winner as guard of honour?
A historic achievement from a legend of a horse accompanied by words William Shakespeare would have been proud of from a master commentator. Together they bring a tear to my eye every time I see it.
The best I was there moment in my life. Even though I had backed Andy Pandy. When he fell at bechers the whole crowd sensed it was Red Rums race and the whole crowd roared him home
If he hadn’t fallen at Becher’s then Andy Pandy would have changed history! Remember how far clear he was? And full of running too. His trainer Fred Rimell had earlier said that his mount would win the National if he could jump Becher’s twice. Andy Pandy went on to win the Whitbread Gold Cup a few weeks later at 4/1. I know! I backed him with everything I had!
Red Rum is the only racehorse in history to have won at 5 furlongs and 4 and half miles and both at the same track !! His first race ever was a 5 furlong seller on the flat at Aintree which he won and then he switched codes and eventually won the national three times :)
The greatest Grand National horse ever, he loved the people and the fame. He was at Blackpool and other events. Thousands of people would pay him and he never bothered. RIP Rummy.
2014 Becher + Sefton, 41 runners, 6 miles, 39 fences, 1 faller and regrettably 1 fatality with a flat injury. As the late Josh Gifford said, "they have ripped the guts out of the fences".
Still get emotional watching this not only for the great Red Rum winning his 3rd Grand National but Sir Peter O' Sullevan commentry as well sends chills down my spine
Red Rum to have runs and wins like he did the 'Grand National'. Red Rum will always be adored and remembered. The time this horse ran that race and course was so much more difficult.
Red Rum's achievement will never be equalled. He really was the most magnificent Aintree horse.Everything about the National better back then. The fences, the commentary and the race as a spectacle was so much better.
Really, Winter Rain was killed at Bechers first time round and Zetas Son at Valentines second time. As much as I adored Red Rum I am glad the fences are easier. I don't get pleasure from seeing horses thrashing about on the ground. Look at the film again and you will see a very distressed Winter Rain lying on the floor. Rummy's record will never be bettered despite the easier course; he was unique, the perfect Aintree horse
Rosalind Mercer 100% REALLY! No one wants to see fatalities. However, what you have ended up with today is a speedy showjump thats never been so dangerous where horses and jockeys sprint around without respect for the soft obstacles. Lets be clear about this. The most shocking fatalities are seen over hurdlinf obstacles - not much different to the current fances. What many people including the BHA fail to mention is the number of fatalities since 1990 far outweigh the 23 years prior to the modifications made. Remember the years 1961,62,63,64,65,66,68,69,71,72,72,76,80,81,82,85,86,88? Big fields, big stiff fences and importantly all fatality free.
Gary Gordon....yep.....the falls you do get in the National nowadays are momentum falls....caused by speed....the horses brush through these flimsy fences and their unchecked forward momentum causes them to topple over ..the old stiffer fences negated this momentum....sad to say that the old style National horse that could jump anything but lacked basic speed would stand no chance now....remember Red Marauder, Earth Summit and Just So...its not the race it was and certainly not the race it was meant to be...RIP...
chatham43..totally concur with your comments....however just to be pedantic the '68 National did regrettably have a fatality...Champion Prince at the water....but no fatalities in '74...or '78...
chatham43 Thank you for the correction. I recall there was a pile up at the water including Foinavon. I think Wikipedia should be updated to record Champion Prince's fate as there is currently no mention.
"He's getting the most tremendous cheer from the crowd. They're willing him home now. The 12-year-old Red Rum, being preceded only by loose horses, being chased by Churchtown Boy. Eyecatcher has moved into third. The Pilgarlic is fourth. They're coming to the elbow, there's a furlong now between Red Rum and his third Grand National triumph! And he's coming up to the line, to win it like a fresh horse in great style. It's hats off and a tremendous reception, you've never heard one like it at Liverpool. Red Rum wins the National!" It was a hard hard old test of man and horse, hats off.!

Except there was never much competition. It was always Red Rum, L''Escargot and Grittar from memory.
Red Rum.
What a horse!
Stamina, steely determination and a true winner.
Fantastic horse his record speaks for it self met him a few times it was a privilege to pat him xx
What a superb horse he was ,you will never ever see the likes of him again 12st on his back ,he was just relentless, so so special.
What a fabulous beast. !! And a tremendous moment that brings tears to ones eyes. An historic victory - for an amazing (g)race horse. Redrum - A True Legend !! Peace !! Rxx
Rummy was a very special horse, and i believe there will never be another like him, Aintree was his domain he loved the crowds, and they loved him.
I think most of us know that the feat that Red Rum achieved in winning his third Grand National will never be equalled much less surpassed. Who could have imagined that when he dead-heated in a selling plate at the age of two in 1967, ten years later he would make Grand National history?
That must be the greatest performance of any horse that ever ran in the nation. 12yrs old.
Rummy was special, wasn't he?! He had the biggest heart of any racing horse, and he loved hearing the crowd. Many of those whom don't bet always follow the national, and Rummy played his part in that. There's not many who don't know about the great horse in the UK. He set a record never to be broken.
Rummy's triumphs re-ignited the public's interest in Aintree and actually saved the future of the racecourse! The best loved racehorse in history!
I don't know much about racing and watching largely out of curiosity - but even an untrained eye can see that that horse is absolutely phenomenal.
The greatest every achievement from a horse ever. A feat that will never be matched
Watched his first win with my granddad.
Watched his second win with my granddad.
He missed a year but I’m a psychic kinda person and I was only four or 5 around this time.
And, don’t forget, he didn’t win the one before this… so, my granddad always used to ask me who might win the race (we watched a lot of races together)…
I KNEW this was Red Rum’s THIRD.
There will never be another horse like red rum 3 firsts and 2 seconds absolutely fantastic.
Records are there to be beaten but red rum record will never be beaten legend every time I watch him win his third national brings a tear to my eye
Thank you Sir Peter, you were the best. What a brilliant commentary and a wonderful evocation of a historic third win for Rummy
@johnmanning5568 but he didn't win. He fell because he wasn't good enough, Rummy won because he was.
Red Rum is the only racehorse in history to have won at 5 furlongs and 4 and half miles and both at the same track !! His first race ever was a 5 furlong seller on the flat at Aintree which he won and then he switched codes and eventually won the national three times :)
Every time I watch that race it brings tears,
RIP Sir Peter a true racing legend
The greatest Grand National horse ever, he loved the people and the fame. He was at Blackpool and other events. Thousands of people would pay him and he never bothered. RIP Rummy.
Look at him finish that race. What a horse he was over that distance and those fences.
We will never see a horse with the absolute determination that red rum had again.tough as nails.
Red Rum for me will ALWAYS be the greatest racehorse off ALL TIME....
Bravery, Skill, Heart and the Love of the nation.....
Simply the best❤️
Brings tears to my eyes ❤
2014 Becher + Sefton, 41 runners, 6 miles, 39 fences, 1 faller and regrettably 1 fatality with a flat injury. As the late Josh Gifford said, "they have ripped the guts out of the fences".
Still get emotional watching this not only for the great Red Rum winning his 3rd Grand National but Sir Peter O' Sullevan commentry as well sends chills down my spine
Red Rum to have runs and wins like he did the 'Grand National'. Red Rum will always be adored and remembered. The time this horse ran that race and course was so much more difficult.
Still brings tears to my eyes today. Such golden memories!
Words can't describe how good this horse was. To achieve what he did in the hardest race in the world.. A true champion 🐴🥇🥇🥇
Red Rum's achievement will never be equalled. He really was the most magnificent Aintree horse.Everything about the National better back then. The fences, the commentary and the race as a spectacle was so much better.
Red Rum was ahead of his time (outstanding).
Rochelle,He was ahead of Everyone.......steven
Ditto previous comment, literally tears of joy every time I watch this , 1977 the Legend that is Red Rum .
love these old fences. far far better than the modern ones, which are surely the softest in the UK now. Absolute legend Rummy. Thanks for the upload
Gary Gordon....yep.....the falls you do get in the National nowadays are momentum falls....caused by speed....the horses brush through these flimsy fences and their unchecked forward momentum causes them to topple over ..the old stiffer fences negated this momentum....sad to say that the old style National horse that could jump anything but lacked basic speed would stand no chance now....remember Red Marauder, Earth Summit and Just So...its not the race it was and certainly not the race it was meant to be...RIP...
chatham43..totally concur with your comments....however just to be pedantic the '68 National did regrettably have a fatality...Champion Prince at the water....but no fatalities in '74...or '78...
chatham43
Thank you for the correction. I recall there was a pile up at the water including Foinavon. I think Wikipedia should be updated to record Champion Prince's fate as there is currently no mention.
Good old Rummy. Just like the late Ginger said.... The old lad was MAGIC!
9:10-9:30
Goodbye "The Voice of Horse Racing". and thank you.
Memorable quote in Grand National History from him.
Memories to last a lifetime. Tears of great joy flowing down face too!!!! ♥️
8:56, probably the loudest roar ever in Liverpool! 😂
Red Rum wins the National!"
Peter O'Sullevan - what a commentator. Talk about doing full justice to the most historic day in Grand National history!
Absolutely! Two legends, one great race :) Rummy and Sir Peter, you will live in our hearts forever
Hi this is the best GN of all time Rummy is supreme thank you for the upload :-)

Brilliant!!!! Horse and Commentary!!!!We'll be thinking of Rummy this weekend
RED RUM IS JUST PHENOMENAL BOTH ON AND OFF THE TRACK.GREAT RIDE BY TOMMY. BUT WHAT A RACE CALL OF THE FINAL TWO (2)FENCES BY PETER O,SULLIVAN. GOOSEBUMPS..!!😍😍
what a legend won it three times from australia hes a legend
He makes me cry everytime, what a horse, love you RED RUM
..reached over 100K views....thanks for all your comments regarding this piece of British racing history...long live the memory of this iconic horse...
When Red rum jumped the last fence Peter o Sullivan’s commentary was fantastic I will never forget that.
Class. Total class. This race still gives me goosebumps even now. Thanks for the memories :-)
Just watched this for the first time in 30 odd years,
We were proud to own and train Forest King ( who also finished that day)
We bought him for £125 as a trekking horse, the year before he won 9 on the trot and 12 out of 14 starts, The national was not to be but I cannot think of a better horse to be beaten by.
when I look back at that now, I’m taken with just how brutal the old Aintree fences were.
It was a hard hard old test of man and horse, hats off.!
Loved the commentary the bbc had from 1973-1992! Peter O’Sullivan, Julian Wilson and John hamner!
5 races.....3 1st places and 2 2nd places.....a legend...the best ever.
Loved that horse! My great granny lived round the corner from Ginger's yard, so I used to go round there a lot. Rummy was quite a cocky horse, but liked people and mints. I was on Aughton Road for all his home comings .
Lucky you!
Wow! RED RUM what a horse looking fresher than any other horse I've seen after a race and this is the Grand National! 👏🐎
Never be another rummy
Red Rum’s record will last forever as they have changed the course so much it’s probably half the race it was in his day.
A true legend..........to "this" day etc.........I was nearly 10 when he won his 3rd GN........Everyone "around" the TV Shop window..."Glued" to it.....Cheers at the end of race "Well deserved". When people talk about him even "now"..Every time....Its "he was-brilliant"........He "certainly has "never" been forgotten in any shape or form...Good for him. x x x x
The stamina of this horse was incredible. Seemed to keep accelerating after the last fence and left the others in his wake. Never see his like again.
The roar at the last fence
+James Rossiter Makes me teary every time. Such a wonderful moment in racing history! Simply the best horse ever....darling Rummy xxx
How could a twelve year old not fall in love with national hunt racing after witnessing such an epic achievement, eh?
