Yes Dr o Brien an absolute genius as rarely had more than 40 horses in training and for a number of years no fillies. Golden fleece right up there with the very best. His 3 runs before epsom looking back was terrific form. He actually beat much better horses than in derby. Epsom wasn't the best racetrack for him. He had unbelievable acceleration. Yes pat eddery did think he was better than dancing brave especially over 12f he told us. Terrific upload this. What a horse. So underrated. Brilliant on the clock too in all his races especially sectional timing.

@@markroe6757 when at ballydoyle in 1980s that was the case. Always kept quality or quantity. For a period of time none or very few fillies. Not exactly sure max number he ever trained in his career was prob in the 60s never more than that. This is just fact. The big stables nowadays can easily have 250-300 horses in training.

He could be the most underrated Derby winner ever.. he was rated 133 with Timeform, which is high, but this horse reminded me a little of Sea Bird.. he was rated 145, and Pat Eddery said Golden Fleece was the best horse he ever rode.. the man rode Pebbles, El Gran Senor and Dancing Brave.. they where all rated higher than Golden Fleece and in the Book "A Century of Champions" the authors only rated him an "average" Derby winner.. this horse has to be the most underrated, most unknown, misunderstood champion of all.. he was undefeated and died so young.. Barney Curley never rated Golden Fleece, he layed him to loose a Kings Ransom for the 1982 Derby, these clips are very cool to see , he was a very good racehorse look what he did to Assert? destroyed him twice on the bridle, in the Derby he won easily despite coming from further back than ideal around tattenham corner , and from there he ranged up smoothly and impressively but for injury he would have been hailed one of the greats

@Paul Gallagher No doubt, Sea Bird was the best derby winner in history, but we do have to acknowledge the fact the horse would have improved between The Derby and Longchamp.. so if we take all those horses you mentioned as we seen them on the day, I do wonder if it would have gotten a little too close for comfort for fans of Sebird. Nijinsky, Reference Point, Golden Fleece, Generous and Shergar in particular, may have got Seabird out his comfort zone. If he was ridden in the same style, in fear of injuring him on the road after the winning line, I suspect he would have come up short against a brilliant front-runner.

This beautiful son of Nijinsky was a great horse . Pat Eddery always maintained that Golden Fleece was the best horse he ever rode . I cannot disagree with that . He didn't race again after the Derby but he would have swept everything aside had he done so . I actually think Epsom didn't suit him and that his sheer class helped him to win at that unique racecourse .

Interesting time comparisons Shergar in 1981 Golden Fleece 1982, the 1982 Derby was run over 10 secs faster! also from a mark visible just over 3f out i compared , Golden Fleece 39.47 to line, Shergar over 45 secs! even allowing for a softer surface in Shergar's Derby these comparisons are simply staggering!! this adds weight to the belief that Golden Fleece was indeed a truly exceptional animal , the times back it up, incidentally approx 3.5secs faster than the 1986 Derby Dancing Brave's year on a quick surface

Also, after his first win as a 3YO, Golden Fleece had to have improved to win the Derby. I feel it unfair he was rated behind Assert in some quarters. Too much emphasis is placed on the horses he beat at Epsom not being that good but how many beaten horses in The Derby amount to anything?
