What I find fascinating is that Joe Mercer and Lester Piggott had very similar lifespans. Joe was born in October, 1934 and Lester in November, 1935. Joe died in May, 2021 and Lester in May, 2022. Both were age 86.
Joe mercer was a true legend of the turf. Himself and a dozen more great names made everybody look up at horseracing. They gave the sport its golden shine .
I saw him win at Newbury and went into my local bookmakers and asked for a price to win the 2,000 gns I was told they had no prices yet I still backed him how I found out he won was my work mate told me the result he said something Captain won I know I purchased two expensive shirts with some of the winnings.
Backed Mill Reef all winter to get his revenge on My Swallow , he did , unfortunately The Brigadier beat the pair of them , luckily got it all back and some on The Derby
Sad to hear of the loss of one of the great jockeys, Joe’s inimitable style in the saddle was a pleasure to watch, a lovely man RIP sir.
