    We can't thank you enough for casting/streaming and putting up these vids on TH-cam. Major kudos! We even made you a special emoticon for Discord, we now use when our servers are sweating all over the place because of all the new players you brought in... "BLAME WINTER". This video in particular really captures the many details you like, which is awesome you took the time to magnify them. These are easily overseen in a generic promo-vid, or just a screenshot or short clip.
    So again, Thank you and we all hope you will have many more enjoyable games of BAR!

    [BAR player here, have some vids of it on my own profile here]
    One interesting mechanic different from Supreme Commander, Total Annihilation or any other similar game I know of is that in BAR, flanking damage is a thing. The first time a unit's hit, it sets a narrow cone facing the point it got shot from, and then shots from any angle other than that cone will deal proportionally more damage as the angle approaches 180 degrees, up to double damage from the 'rear.' So, even common 'infantry' bots can inflict staggering damage if they get zergling-style surrounds on enemies. Advancing into defense turrets that shoot you from two sides at once is asking to get torn apart. This flanking 'cone' will reset after a few seconds of not getting shot. You can turn on an option to show this cone and a circle that shows relative damage angles.

    Quick clarification at the start you say mod called Zero-K but Zero-K is actually a full game just like BAR is. BAR has stayed more true to TA while Zero-K has done more of their own things. Both are free and open-source and even borrow a lot of each other's code! To me, BAR is the gateway drug for playrers because of the fancy graphics while Zero-K, for me, is the more fun game because of the way the eco works, the unit AI and because it feels faster. Compared to many games BAR units have a brain while to many Zero-K players, they still seem brain-dead lol!

In a long drawn out fight, cortex has the advantage due to armor and firepower on alot of their units, If you leave a cortex player alone for too long and allow them to build up they will smash your face in like you saw at the beginning of the video. Arm is super dangerous early game as their units are faster and cheaper, you can very quickly be swarmed and killed if your not prepared for it. Not every unit in the game has a counter to it, some straight up dont and you will need to figure out how to deal with them.

    I just downloaded the game and I'm excited to give it a shot! Something I've been thinking of a lot lately is why Starcraft feels so special compared to a lot of other games and I boil it down to two things:
    1. The characters and campaign missions make you connect with the units. Each unit also has some soul and personality to them (like when you select them they say voicelines)
    2. There is a rich history around starcraft with things like StarCrafts (the carbot series) that makes even the scary, gross Zerg adorable, attractive, and hilarious.
    In addition to SC2's killer gameplay offerings, all that heart and soul behind the game makes people like me still love it to this day even though it's such a tough game to play (hardest in the world IMO). It's sad to see what is probably the death of pro SC2 happening before our eyes, but it's nice Winter is keeping an eye on the RTS landscape for us.

    Absolutely love the concept. I played a lot of Supreme Commander and Planetary annihilation (not competitive though). These types of games really are amazing.
    Would you like to try to cast some 1V1 games with someone experienced in BAR to learn a few things ? I guess you can ask on the discord ! I'd watch you cast this game anyday just like I watch all of your SC2 casts.

    I was watching the video at the start and I was like...this has to be some sort of sequel to Supreme commander total annihilation. That game was soo sick when I was a teen.

    I just got this game last night. Played a few 4v4 games and man I had a blast this game pays homage to all other great RTS games before it and does so in a deep and respectful way. It's a bit awkward getting the hang of your economy at the start but once you figure it out the game world is your oyster. Good luck have fun don't die.

    I don't know why people always overlook Planetary Annihilation, which is easily the best RTS in the genre, IMO. Incredibly sophisticated and effective controls, Land, Sea, Air, and Orbital layers, multiple planets, moons you can crash into planets... it's the full package.
    But BAR has one-upped them on controls, which is really saying something! But I miss that orbital layer. PA has spoiled me.

    Just started the video, download the game in the back ground, try to start up and Servers full! Coincidence that Winter puts out a video and the servers get overloaded? I think not. Yes please more content on this game, looks great.

    • @PtaQ_Q
      @PtaQ_Q ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We had to set a limit to the number of users to save the servers from crashing, we are incrementally increasing it now. Winter has been a big contributor to that issue indeed :p

    Unit control is the same as in Zero-K and other games based on Spring Engine, because it is Spring Engine feature.
    6 or 7 nukes fired at the same time aimed at one place usually will break through anti-nuke defense, if the area is protected by just one anti-nuke.

    • @jacksheldon8566
      @jacksheldon8566 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, Zero-k has more unit control options like setting one target for each bomber in an attack zone automatically or guarding a bigger units with several others by making them go around the guard unit.

    • @timoschofer2035
      @timoschofer2035 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jacksheldon8566 also here u can set different target for each bomber. If u don't see it in the game its maybe the player doesn't know how to do this.

      It is open source. That means you will never see an ounce of microtransaction, ever.
      You can also check Zero-k without fear. another open source RTS that run on the same BAR's engine which provide some interesting new gameplay mechanics such as terraforming.

    I built my first computer in 1997 in order to play Total Annihilation when it first came out. You should do a little research on TA and how groundbreaking it was if you have the time - I believe it was even the first game to have DLC. Chris Taylor went on to develop Supreme Commander in 2007, the spiritual successesor to Total Annihilation. I never understood how Starcraft did better than TA when it came out in 1998.

  • @stiofanceoofobamium6833

    Zero-k is a game very similar to BAR, same engine, same core features, but different weighting of those features and is worth checking out.
    It feels more pollished imo, since its been around longer and the eco is more competetive
    (efficency of infinite metal generation based on mex control, incentivises fighting for map even later on )

    I spent the last two days geeking around in the wiki. I would love a build order tutorial + game play testing it out.
    Idea: maybe playing it and then commenting it as an espectator Winter? I think that format might be easier to see the full battle and understand better the overall movement of both bands, ans not only your perspective.

    18:15 You are not rambling Winter, thanks to your knowledge and experience, you get the nuances that actually matter *Smashing the LIKE button intensifies*. A LOT of "reviewers" are extremely casual, superficial and not really informative. The stuff you point out shines light on WHY THIS game is different than the rest - one could say, core point of any review.
    If you want a tip: Check out how TotalBiscuit (F) has done his reviews. Having Proper structure beforehand will enhance the review. You can make sure that you do not miss anything you want to talk about (really alleviates the stress) and it smoothens the information flow from you to a viewer.
    Please do MORE of this. Putting light on indies and AA is very much needed in modern overcasualized hypetrain gaming. Once I get home from night shift, I am giving it a shot. Thanks to you, the network effect is real and another 5 people from my friendlist are already checking it out! = You DO MAKE THE Difference, keep up! Loving it!
