    Nice review. I came back yesterday from an Austrian ski trip with the Pocket. Before I used to use a Sony RX100 on a Crane M and what a pain. The Pocket is quick and simple. Image quality is awesome. I got the DJI "Go Pro" attachment and with a Joby flexible tripod I did some motionlapse without having to bury the Pocket in the snow (with USB-C connector at the bottom getting wet) or balancing it on a railing or ledge. It worked very nicely. Yes, the GoPro attachment does cover the phone adapter location but i didn't find that an issue especially after the mid-week 1.04 update DJI put out which meant I could adjust the Pro setting on the Pocket itself.

      That's awesome! I'm looking forward to getting some third-party accessories to mount this camera in new locations. The usability far outshines difficulties I've had with other cameras of this size!

    Nice video 🙌🏾 nice production 👍🏾 I've had it now for just over two months and done some cinematic videos on my channel, I can't fault it. Such a powerful device to have and excellent as a B Camera for when you're out and about, or even for vlogging. The new firmware update is such a game changer, sounds like you're enjoying it as much as me 🙌🏾

      Cheers dude! The firmware updates have been surprisingly good and fairly fast to release! It’s a shame I filmed this the day before I saw the latest firmware update. I actually had a few other negatives that I edited out because they updated them via firmware!

    I will be going to Disneyland soon with my kids so I wanted to buy one that is small so I can take shots on all kinds of rides. So I was thinking of buying GoPro 7 Black or DJI Osmo Pocket.
    Which one is good in battery life, low light, etc.
    I will bring my Lumix G8 (G85) also with me.

  • @sbhopper8511
    @sbhopper8511 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I recently got one, and I like it. I agree with the negatives you've listed here. I knew about most of those before I bought it, and I really hesitated because of them. I just suspect that DJI will quickly come out with a newer version that addresses those negatives. I guess the best thing to do is get as much use out of this one as I can and learn it inside and out so I'll know if I want to get the next one or not.

    I am looking for a rugged outdoor camera for filming my channel's vids. I was excited about this little camera until I watched your video. No tripod mount, no external mic for wind reduction capabilities. Those are basic must-haves for any serious video creator. I was thinking maybe there is a way to cover the internal mic but you didn't mention it, so I guess not. Bummer.

    Great review, thank you, just bought one for filming assignments to the Maldives & Kenya next week - was worried about luggage weight allowances for my Ronin-S, this looks like a great travel alternative & companion for my Mavic 2 Pro. DJI rock my world!

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah the size and weight make this very useful when fighting against luggage weight. Of course the Ronin brings huge advantages too, but if you don’t bring it, at least the Osmo can fill a small gap with no sacrifice to weight!

    Hi Joe, glad all is going so well, that's a cool little camera, and for what it does it's a good start.
    So this can only get better with time, I think a tilt socket for the phone on the side may also give a little more flexibility, but I like it.

    Yep osmo pocket pro or pocket 2 is realistic. It will be water proof and have time warp on the device lol. How safe did you feel with the pocket while skiing? My fear like most gimbals is it taking a fall and breaking. Does the pocket feel durable?

  • @elpinto7
    @elpinto7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome video Joe! You said the Osmo Pocket held up pretty well in -12, do you think its rugged enough for light rain or splashes? Or snow on the camera? I wouldn’t expect it to be as rugged as a GoPro, but would it be a decent replacement for everyday recording in and around the city in all weather? Would you recommend the Osmo Pocket over getting a smartphone gimbal like the Osmo mobile 2 or something?
    I would really like DJI to include some IP rating in the next generation.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it worked out pretty well for me in the snow. You can even see in some of the footage that snow is falling all around. With the cold temperatures and then entering warmer environments, it created quite a bit of condensation, however I left the camera to acclimatise in my pocket and simply wiped it with a microfibre cloth to dry it. I personally much prefer this to using the Osmo Mobile, for the smaller form factor, better camera quality, faster setup time and media recorded to an SD card rather than my phone. I think weather sealing on moving parts such as a gimbal are still quite difficult to manufacture, so it might be a while yet...

      Except for their firmware... I have been using DJI Products for years now (Osmo Pro, Raw, Phantom...) They all have amazing firmware problems, this Osmo Pocket is riddled with problems (the gimbal will jerk at random times).

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm, interesting. To be fair, I've never had good performance of a GoPro in lowlight. The streets I _did_ test in for lowlight, were extremely dark, so I could also just be stretching it's capability a bit further?

    Maybe try taping a deadcat on to the mic like all the other cameras with poor wind protection? I like how small this camera is and what it brings to the table but with all my gear already, this definitely just a novelty to me. My Gopro does everything this can do and more so I'll be sticking with that. Great review of it though as always!

    Don't know how long post-publish you review comments. Interesting you should mention the potential evolution into something mid-size between Osmo and Pocket. I was set to buy Pocket until I stumbled upon Removu K1, that very mid-size alternative. Now I don't know which way to go. K1 certainly lacks the ecosystem of the Pocket and certainly wouldn't be as innocuous as the Pocket, but the Pocket's non-changeable battery and unreliable wifi to smartphone make me leery. ANY INSIGHTS ABOUT THE K1? EVER USED IT? Great review. Just subscribed. Thanks!

      This could be a great place to start, even before you update your phone as all the processing power is done on the camera itself, rather than requiring the phone. The price is also fairly reasonable in comparison to much larger cameras which will allow you to experiment much further without too much initial investment.

    Ok, what about the DJI osmo pocket mic adapter? Not only DJI charges you a premium for what is a cheap piece of plastic and makes it impossible to use a third party equivalent adapter but, at least outside of the USA this item is impossible to find. I even managed to buy it from a local reseller, I am in the UK, to be told the day before delivery (a good three weeks after I ordered it) that it was out of stock and would not be back in stock for another month at least. Furthermore, two-three days later, I received a stock reminder from DJI (as I had registered with their service before finding out that a UK reseller had one in stock) that the item was back in stock. Nevertheless, when I tried to buy it from their store (I received the reminder at 11.30pm and I saw the email only two hours later when I tried to buy it from their online store) I could not buy it and customer service told me that it was out of stock and tried to convince me to buy it from an American resellers for close to double its price (plus possible import tax by UK customs).

    If they can get the 1 inch sensor on the Mavic without a substantial size increase, they could do the same with this concept. However, even as is I think this is an especially cool product with a surprisingly good price.

      Yep! I can definitely see them doing this in a future version once they've analysed the response of this version.

    Would you replace your DSLR Canon 200d for the DJI osmo pocket?
    What are you thoughts?
