  • This video is about Urban sketching at Yasaka Pagoda in Kyoto.
I make a sketch in my watercolor sketchbook with a dry twig and chinese ink. The trees are drawn in pencil. I finish with watercolor.
I use two pocket palettes with mainly Winsor & Newton paint.
I learned the twig drawing from the great Malaysian artist Ch'ng Kiah Kiean. Check out his art here: kiahkiean.com/

The picture is simply breath taking. What sort of colour/ink did you use to paint?

Hi Barbara that was wonderful to watch, I only recently found your channel and immediately subscribed. I have seen other urban sketchers put gauze in the bottle of ink, is that what you did? and was the graphite powder you brushed on before the watercolour. Blessings from Australia

Beautiful work, Barbara, you've certainly come a long way with this technique since last year.

@@BarbaraLuel No I ran back to my comfort zone - the pencil although in the past year I have been learning watercolour. Will send you when I feel a little more confident in the result!

David Milton Jones that’s great as well to learning new stuff 🤗 Do you go urbansketching? 🤗

@@BarbaraLuel Yes, but with pencil and ink (brush not twig!) Sometimes it's all very tight and at other times I manage to loosen up a bit. I guess I'm that sort of guy. I'll will send a few by mail to you if that's OK. Always good to get feedback.

This is lovely. It appears that you have very little ink in the bottle. Is that intentional?

Yes indeed ! If you go to my blog you can find a blogpost with explanation about it. In the bottle is cotton gauze with ink on it, but so little that it doesn't drip on the page. Just to humidify the twig :)
