Hey Ian, love your work. Quick question: in one video, you put color down as the very first step and then drew on top of it. In others, you make a rough sketch first and then add color. What would prompt you to choose one of those techniques over the other? Thanks so much.
I love watching these. I have a question: at 1:10 you switched from a Tombow marker to a kind of fine liner... but it isn't black, is it? Looks Grey. Is that right? And very thin? Like less than .05?
I was wondering : Is Ian using Tombow markers because it is easier to draw with fine line markers over it than over watercolor ? (I like myself using fountain pen over watercolor, but I have to wait until watercolor is completely dry) ?
He uses them for the initial sketch because they are water soluble and that means the original sketch will disappear a bit after he puts the watercolor on top of them. He also uses them to quickly add gray tones to an image, because it’s faster than watercolor and doesn’t make the page more wet, which means that the whole thing dries faster and can be completed faster.

Looks like a Pilot Fineliner Pen SWPPF possibly? I just ordered some because James Richards talks about them in his book.
