Boy, I remember back in the '70s we'd go to the store and walk out with cans of tuna, boxes of mac and cheese, cheap ground beef, and Hamburger Helper if it was a good week.

My beloved late wife would sometimes ask me when I'm cooking- "Honey, are you sure that's not too much cheese"?
I would always reply- "Of course not! I can still lift it"!!

Mom tried it once or twice; she figured she could do better and cheaper with what we had in the house. There was no need to spend the, what? 59 cents or so for a box of stuff and then buy the meat. My next exposure to it was in college with a couple of neighbors. They ate it, but... eh, not that great. This was early to mid 70s.

"December 1970 - it's sorta like now. The economy was down, beef prices were high. So General Mills and that famous cook Betty Crocker got together, they did, and they said, "Let's put this out there so we can stretch folks' dollar."
There are differences between then and now:
1970: The food was higher quality ingredients and tasted better.
2022: The food is a lower quality in comparison and the flavor is, let's just say edible.
1970: Companies helped lower income families in providing slightly more of product to consumer per unit at lower prices.
2022: Companies screw consumers using deceptive marketing schemes.

Great improvement to both, the hamburger and the "helper." Stretching the dollars but with a good meal. :)

Hamburger Helper from the box was unheard of in my house growing up. We always made it from scratch at home. I figured out why... home made tasted better than the red box.

I remember (doesn't seem like that long ago) when you could buy ground beef for $1 a pound. As low as 88 cents a pound when you bought it in the big chub.

As a person from Wisconsin, I say "Yes" to the cheese. Can never have too much. FYI-WI is No. 1 in making cheese from cows milk. No.1 in making cheese from goats milk. We are also the only state that still makes Limburger cheese. Powerful odor but tastes great with mild onion in a sandwich.

Thanks Shannon & Kent (Beag & Duke). Hamburger Helper was usually the first item on the grocery list while I was growing up. Well, with six kids sitting down at the Supper table plus mom and dad, we had to stretch things out. There were usually some fresh vegetables from dad's garden to stretch it out a little bit more. Mom usually always had Sweet Tea or milk for our evening beverage.
Great video presentation. Thanks again for sharing.

Okay, Kent: I have never been a fan of hamburger helper, but my husband and two teenage sons love it. I saw this recipe yesterday and decided to whip it up for dinner last night. I was AMAZED at how delicious it was and even had a bowl myself! My husband finished off the pot after I went to bed and my son woke up this morning mad because he wanted the leftovers for breakfast. He wanted me to make it again tonight, but we settled on 'in a few days, haha. Just thought I'd let you know how much my family enjoyed this new dinner staple in our house! Thank you for another great (and easy) recipe!

Thanks for sharing your great recipes, it looks delicious! I didn’t use the cream cheese & sour cream, but I did add red/green peppers on hand , light cream, tbsp tomato paste, tbsp “better than bouillon “paste, tbsp ketchup & mustard, cheddar, mozzarella turned out delicious! Add or subtract what you & your family likes! I loved hamburger helper growing up in the 70’s & 80’s. We had a big family 5 kids and my parents!! Through the years on a quest to eat healthier, I stopped buying boxed prepared foods and starting creating healthier versions! But it does give me good childhood memories! Thanks for the memories & honoring my fellow American veterans! Happy holidays! 🙄🙏🏾❤️

My mom is pretty cool she'd take the recipes of hamburger helper and she'd make her own by buying different types of noodles that were on sale she'd use tuna ground beef ground turkey.
A lot of times she'd make her own sauces like with you do stroganoff. I was worried about the salt intake when we were growing up in the '80s and '90s and early 2000s.
What I can say is we didn't have a lot of money back then.
