    I can't imagine loading, maintaining, and using this in the muddy trenches of the first World War. Yeah, it's probably a fun shooter today, but just keeping gunk out of those clips had to be shear madness. The ammo carriers, running back and forth from the bunker just to keep that thing fed, let alone the loader having to fiddle with that propped up on an embankment.

    • @panchopistola8298
      @panchopistola8298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh you kept that thing clean . If you ever heel in the military …. you figure out ways of keeping things clean

      @@panchopistola8298 I was a Power Systems tech in the Army. That's hydraulics, pneumatics, and vacuum systems. I had a compressor with me most of the time, and you know what? I also got ambushed with mortars in Sarajevo. Sure, you try to keep things clean, while artillery is making fresh craters. I'm betting they didn't have compressors in the trenches with this thing, to blow the mud out.

    • @panchopistola8298
      @panchopistola8298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Psiberzerker 🤷🏾 I dunno I wasn’t there . But what else do you have to do but clean stuff in trench warfare ? Sure the mud everywhere but it’s on a stand … the pictures I’ve seen all the weapons looked clean .

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@panchopistola8298 There's not enough room in the comments to talk about what all you have to do in Trench Warfare. In the Manual of Arms for the Hotchkiss, add straigtening out the clips so they'll feed to that list. They had to maintain the trenches from being randomly shelled, too. The whole time you're cleaning that thing, you're not covering No Man's land. Which is what the Machinegunners were for, in Trench Warfare.

    I recently saw video on TH-cam of US troops using the 1914 Hotchkiss in an anti-aircraft role and it had a flexible metal strips that were all connected together in like 400 round sections.

  • @kentr2424
    @kentr2424 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    For some reason, the French Army just loved the 30 round strip feed (so did the Japanese in WWII). The 30 round strip was easier to make than a drum magazine (Lewis) or a cloth belt (Maxim/Vickers), but could it be reloaded and reused?
    Nice video Mae!!

      Japan already had their own Hotchkiss clone back in WW1 (Type 3 HMG). The Hotchkiss M1914 generally used a 24-round strip, but could also be used with semi-rigid belts containing 249-251 rounds (sources vary a bit). Although, I believe the latter was mostly for tank mounts or the such.
