    Interesting Fact: When the British Army was retiring the Vickers machine gun, they had stores of .303 rounds to get rid of. So they ran the Vickers machine gun for 3 days until all of the ammo ran out!

    • @zoiders
      @zoiders ปีที่แล้ว +26

      That was just what was on hand at Catterick garrison.

    • @genghiskhan6809

      And apparently by the end of it, the vickers used was still serviceable.

    • @Vespuchian
      @Vespuchian ปีที่แล้ว +71

      This is just going from memory so take it with a grain of salt, but the Vickers was nearly rejected from service trials because it almost failed the 'how many rounds until failure' test, not because it failed too early, but because it was so overbuilt they couldn't get it to fail at all. As long as the water jacket was kept topped up, the damn thing would keep going no matter how many rounds went through the feed, and 'did not complete trial (ran out of ammunition)' was not a valid result for the test.
      I think they ended up 'sabotaging' the unit by letting the water boil off and letting it heat up until it jammed, resulting in a pretty ludicrous 'rounds to failure' number.

    • @boingkster
      @boingkster ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@Vespuchian thats the most British thing ever! You can imagine the conversation.
      1- Well I guess its passed then... we're out of rounds.
      2- No, it hasn't passed. It hasn't failed. It must fail to provide accurate data.
      1- But... if it doesn't fail then... surely its superior?
      2- **adjusts monacle, sips tea** It *must* fail. Carry on.

    When they could, they'd weigh the tripod down with sandbags to help hold it in place to correct the issue you referred to.

    • @NimbleJack3
      @NimbleJack3 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      They mentioned in the Hotchkiss video (#095) that they do not weigh the tripods down (or bury them) to provide a reasonable level of comparison between each gun - if they weighed them down, they'd have to weigh each one down identically, and that's just not feasible across EVERY single tripod.

    Minute of Mae is quite possibly one of the best short format videos on da TH-cam. Although... I sometimes wonder if Mae has an internal monologue when firing full auto pieces that sounds like the Heavy from TF2 going "Ya-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta ya-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta do-de-da-va-da-da-dada! Kaboom-Kaboom!" Or maybe that's something more in Othais' wheelhouse.

    My Grandfather was on a Vickers at Passchendaele. 9th Hawkes Bay. B Company 15th Wellington Infantry Battalion. One night the Germans attacked and were very close to overrunning the trenches. His ammo belt ran out and he turned to his loader to find he had deserted his post. He loaded a new belt and by this time the Jerry's were very close. You can guess the result of 250 rounds of 303 at close range. The next day he was promoted to Lance Corporal.

    I was watching part of a great series called "Our World War" today about the 1914 Battle of Mons which featured the Vickers MK1. The episode I watched was about how Private Stanley Godley got his Victoria Cross by being the last man to stay behind manning a Vickers! What a strange co incidence that this Minute of Mae should also feature a Vickers!

    I was in our School Army Cadet unit (Australia) in the 1950's specialising in the Vickers.
    The manual I remember in stripping the lock (Which had many parts) described "The indentation of the prolongation of the left side plate" (a dint) - that's the Army.
    To empty the gun it was Crank on Roller twice & on the firing range an Army instructor did not clear a gun properly & one round remained "up the spout" & they made the mistake of putting the gun in the back of the truck with us Cadets.
    Sure enough one Cadet lifted the safety & pressed the trigger & the round went through the truck cabin hit the stearing wheel & over an Anti Tank crew. ( Very white driver after he saw it could have been him)

(I think this happens sometimes in Canada as well..) Seriously I'm a big-time SMLE fan-boy! For me, as to import guns, if it isn't Belgian, it better be British! (Ok, I like my "Com-Blok" stuff too!) OTOH My budget would NEVER allow me to do more than LOOK at a Vickers (even if I OWNED one) Have you seen what .303 goes for?!?! "Good stuff" is like $3 a round! 😳

      @mac4boys541 ปีที่แล้ว

      The term, the whole nine yards, has got NOTHING to do with the length of the ammo belt, Its a British saying, inherited from the Empire. It refers to when a woman of means went to buy her SARI, getting the whole 9 yards of cloth that it took to get a full and proper sari. So when a Vickers machine gunner was giving the opposing forces , the whole 9 yards, he was not short changing them of any of his Vickers FULL and proper fire power. not 9 yards of ammo belt.
