I love seeing the kids today react to this song. Pretty much everyone loves this song. Doesn't matter when they were born. This song was recorded in the mid 60s and yet it was the most played song on the radio of the entire century. Also, everyone thinks they were black until they saw them or were told. They were nicknamed "blue eyed soul".Glad you were exposed to them.
    And FYI

This is one of many songs me n my friends listened to while driving around ( crusin' ) with our girls sitting next to us. Looking back it was a magical time. Our Vietnam experience blotted out the magic and some of us. Seeing videos like yours and others brings back some of the magic. Thank you for that. Glad I am still on the right side of the dirt to enjoy yours and others videos.

Bill Medley - the taller one with the deep voice - is a baritone, whilst Bobby Hatfield - the one who sang Unchained Melody - was a tenor, he could hit high notes many singers normally don't or can't. Sadly, Bobby passed away in 2003, but Bill Medley still sometimes sings, despite now being 80.
Bill Medley also sang Time Of My Life with Jennifer Warnes, the theme song to the movie Dirty Dancing.

Bobby Hatfield (blonde) and Bill Medley were raised in SoCal and were greatly influenced by black artists of 50's and 60's. Their first hit was Little Latin Lupe Lu, written by Bill. The opened for Beatles and Stones on their first American tours.
Try Soul and Inspiration or My Babe or I Just Wanna Make Love To You or Sit Down and Cry or Old Man River or Georgia On My Mind or Try To Find Another Man. .. Lots more. Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003

they adopted the name "The Righteous Brothers" for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers".[10] At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them.

They got their name when they were playing at a military base and a group of black Marines said "you sound righteous, brothers!" The name stuck and they were known as blue-eyed soul back in the day. Sadly, some white radio stations initially didn't want to play this song when it came out because with the sound of the song and the name "righteous brothers", they assumed they were black so they refused to play the song. It did get some air time on some black radio stations until the DJ brought them in for an on-air interview; once he saw they were white, they stopped playing the song since he felt that his listeners wouldn't want to listen to "some white guys". Fortunately greatness and talent overcame and this song became the most played song on American radio and television in the 20th century.
Also check out Soul and Inspiration, which spent 3 straight weeks at #1 in 1966. It has solo sections in the song for both "brothers".

I think you too are finally ready now for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles doing the incredibly beautiful "Ooh Baby, Baby" here th-cam.com/video/nwwsT2Hh1AQ/w-d-xo.html and then we can really talk about great singers, great songwriters and heartthrobs. I had the great pleasure of seeing both the RB's and Smokey many time back in the 60's and trust me, there was nothing quite like Smokey. However, that's not to say these guys weren't a great act, great singers, and big fan favorites. Smokey though was next level.

When they were starting out, they played small clubs, and, bars around southern California. Their manager suggested they perform together, and, one night at a club near El Toro, they did. Bill Medley, the tall one, overheard a group of black Marines talking about them. One of the Marines said, "Damn, those brothers were righteous!" They decided to call themselves The Righteous Brothers from then on.

lol! EVERYONE thinks this is black men singing! A lot of people thought the same thing about the Bee Gees and then they SEE these guys on a video and they are surprised! You need to remember with both groups there was no autotune or studio tricks. Music was played on REAL instruments and not a computer. You either had talent or you didn't. The lyrics really connected you to the singer. Particularly with the Bee Gees, they didn't use over-sexualized or disrespectful lyrics.
