Gas or Diesel: 2021 Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel vs gas powertrain | Driving.ca

  • These days, it seems like Canadian shoppers love two things more than just about anything else: four-wheel drive utility vehicles, and loads of selection when it comes to the powertrains that move those vehicles around.
As automakers respond to changing shopper demands, we’re seeing more new and exciting powertrain options hitting the market. Jeep’s off-roader lineup, including models like the Gladiator and Wrangler are a good place to see this in action.
Here we’ll focus on a question that Jeep Gladiator shoppers now have to ask themselves for the first time: do you go with the standard gasoline V6 engine, or upgrade to the 3-litre EcoDiesel V6 that’s just been added to the options roster-says Jeep, to give shoppers something they’d been asking for a few years.

Reduced tow rating in the diesel Jeep is primarily due to the limited cooling capacity with the small radiator limited grill size and confined engine compartment of the Jeep.
It will actually easily out tow the 3.6 until you have to tow a travel trailer into the wind up a long grade in the heat.

Diesel is always better option. They get better mpg, have more torque, are longer lasting engines, for the most part they’re built to last forever and handle much more than gas engines, down sides are higher coast of fuel, louder engine, less HP, and lastly the simple fact that people are scared of diesels. They think they are old noisy smoking clunky monster truck engines and are all made in 1975 before people knew what global warming was. They’re not they are very well built and eco friendly modern engines that are great for on and off road especially if you plan to own your vehicle for 10+ years and put a ton of miles always go diesel it just makes more sense

Not really. This is a boutique item that’s going to have growing pains and logistical issues into the future when they probably discontinue them. Diesels require more expensive maintenance, DEF and more expensive fuel which negates any real financial gain. Cold starts in the winter are no fun either. I don’t think diesel makes any sense in anything other than a dedicated hauler 2500 or bigger. Not worth the hassle imo

Lower tow rating. When you look at a lot of people's real world reviews, they say the diesel is noisier on the freeway. Then you have diesel exhaust fluid to worry about and top of sometimes diesel is substantially more expensive. I still like the diesel option more lol and yes that diesel was still out to the V6 gas. I'm just curious to the transmission. I will do research to figure out if it has a better transmission and what other reasons the towing rating is lower

For towing diesel will always be the better option, especially when the displacement is close. See in the Gladiator that has the option of a 3.0 V6, as apposed to a 3.6 V6 gas. The HP out is closer for maintaining highway speeds, where as in a Colorado, the only other mid size truck to offer a diesel, but only a 2.8 4 cyl, that’s only .8 liters less than the 3.6 V6 gas, but the HP is what suffers at 188, unlike the 310 gas, that definitely is noticeable on the highway, more so without a trailer, but quieter and less frenetic towing. The Colorado also has a 700 lbs increase in tow capacity, because of the extra torque and less weight than the V6. But will get better mileage than the Gladiator all around, but not by much.

Ok makes sense save 700$ bucks a year on fuel. It's roughly the same cost. of general up keep on a diesel truck. So basically they're the same price. In regards to general maintenance. Well the diesel is still pricier. But everyone swears there tons more to manage

Older diesels were easier to work on.
Generally a V6 diesel is more reliable and easier to work on them a V8 gas engine just because less parts. But compared to another stout v6 the advantages are less comparable

I would be saving having to swap a bad gas engine and I could put way more miles in my diesel engine than the gas engine. You could keep this gladiator for over 10 years. There is some cons though and to me that would be towing.

Still can't figure out why this thing exists, I test drove one and it's all over the road like a Jeep, my friend bought one and offroading with a Rubicon it's about as good as a wrangler sport. Towing a 3400# camper without a WD is down right scary, with one it did OK, it's like when you were high and thought about what a Great Dane / Chihuahua puppy would look like...it would look like a gladiator, too big to do tricks to small to pull a cart.

And jeep doesn't back what they say. I have been driving around in a death trap for years with the hope if a buy back. But jeep no loner answers the emails sent from the attorney. I have a tiktok that I will share that shows what is happening.

Susan this is not the same engine you have. The new generation engine was completely redesigned with 80 percent new parts. Most importantly the emissions system was completely redesigned. This engine should not suffer the same issues.
The old engine after the government AEM detune was emissions problems plagued to include engine fires from sooted up intakes thanks to EPA required EGR system. Unfortunately the EPA will never be held accountable. The engine needed an aftermarket tune (closes EGR valve etc) plus EGR cooler delete or warranty replacement.
Used commercially I ran my first one 371k miles and my 2nd 423k miles. Friend James ran his 452k miles. Tune & delete they become much more reliable.
My son is about to order a new Ram 1500 with the new ED to be used commercially which will also see 100k plus miles a year.

This is where hybrid technology shines. They can add it cheaper than a turbo diesel. You'll get the increased torque and fuel efficiency at a lower price. Turbo diesels are just too expensive in North America. Might be because of the after treatments but I feel they are just over-priced. I know its not because of the VW snafu. The last thing to think about is reliability. From my limited knowledge about turbo diesels and their exhaust treatment I hear there is no end to problems with these systems in the HD pickups anyway. There are always some problems that crop up and qualified mechanics aren't plentiful. Its the opposite with hybrid technology. Electric would be nice too, sadly the infrastructure is decades behind in Canada and where I live almost invisible. Except for QC, our electric companies don't have the capacity for a massive shift towards electric vehicles so hybrid is the winner for at least the foreseeable future.

    • @vernlochtefeld1626
      @vernlochtefeld1626 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dennis from your limited knowledge and experience was well said. Each has there place. Electric works well in town where there is charging stations and in applications where you don’t need great range and have time for recharges. City bus routes for example.
Diesels work best for long distance towing & load hauling which they do efficiently and when without government intervention reliably. Literally millions of old pre government intervention diesel trucks out there with a million plus miles on them still soldiering on. Plus where you need reliable range unlike battery life that diminishes & needs replaced like our cell phones. Refueling is quick & readily available by comparison even remotely.
