  • 2021 Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel - To Buy or Not to Buy? - The Gladiator adds a 3.0L diesel engine to its powertrain offerings for 2021. A diesel engine in a Jeep comes with plenty of advantages. But it also comes with some disadvantages, including one that will come to most as a surprise. So the question ultimately becomes...to buy a Gladiator EcoDiesel or not to buy?

    I own the EcoDiesel Wrangler Rubicon. I have often wondered why the weight and towing ratings were no different from the gassers . . . I did not know it was due to engine cooling considerations. I will need to keep a watchful eye out for engine temperatures as my loads increase. Thank you for the added insight.

      My pleasure! I have to admit that it wasn't something I was always aware of either until I had to research for this video. Enjoy your Wrangler EcoDiesel!

    Premium for the diesel pkg.....and you also pay a premium at the pump.....have you checked diesel prices lately ?

    • @TheNovakReport
      @TheNovakReport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely need to have other reasons for wanting a diesel other than cost savings on efficiency, that's for sure.

    wish it have Cummins 3.0 or 4.0 like as duramax or powerstroke 3.0

    • @TheNovakReport

      That would only increase the premium further to own it. Sounds good in theory but the market would be very, very small I think.

    As good as y our video is, you really missed explaining the ToC with diesel of over gas as well. The sheer cost of owning this diesel will also push out the fuel savings to purchase ratio as well, not to mention the fragility of the exhaust sensor system or the EDF PITA. Not knocking the engine, but there is a whole lot more one has to consider, then just purchase price vs fuel economy.

    • @TheNovakReport
      @TheNovakReport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A fair point, and there certainly are other factors to consider. But in a video like this which is focusing on a vehicle that doesn't usually have environmental considerations as a top factor when deciding, I didn't think there would be a lot of uptake if I got into specifics of total organic carbon emissions. I take your point fully though and appreciate you bringing it up.

      @@TheNovakReport Thanks for responding, however I wasn't expecting an EPA training session :) More covering the extra cost of ownership that actually makes the ECODiesel a poor choice of economy, however based on your individual needs that could/would be mitigated by its capability. Recently I have started to see more and more issues cropping up regarding the diesel, where as the gasser is the hallmark of tried tested and true, even if lackluster for sure. As someone who is seriously looking at the Gladiator, it does matter. I over research and study any major purchase, doesn't mean I make better ones, just I can blame myself even more after making it LOL

      @@exmortis4404 if you're seriously looking but have a bit of time to wait, there are rumblings that a Gladiator 4xe may be in the offering at some point. The Wrangler 4xe is out and the Grand Cherokee 4xe is next. A Gladiator 4xe is not much of a stretch to see happening soon. Just a thought...

      @@TheNovakReport Yeah I have read that it has been delayed until 2023/24, and I never ever buy gen 1 of any new tech anyway in a vehicle. That is a recipe for a warranty hog lol but I appreciate the info. I am going out to test drive in the next few days. First order of business is do I like driving it, then I will move on from there.

      This is the same engine that is currently in both the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. This is the 2nd generation of this 3.0L V6.

      @@FlatOut75 Technically, the engine in this Gladiator EcoDiesel is now a 3rd generation variant, but it is indeed the newest iteration. The newest EcoDiesel is made by Italian VM Motori S.p.A., which is owned by Fiat Chrysler...or should I say Stellantis.

    I just got my 2023 wrangler Rubicon Farout edition. OMG I love this JEEP! Very well built top shelf quality material fit and finish is great! The engine is awesome and so is the transmission! They quit making the diesel you can’t order them anymore not even in the Gladiator. They are going electric. So sad but I’m so happy I have one of the last of its kind. A very special Jeep.

    • @TheNovakReport

      The 4xe powertrains offer more torque and power than the diesel. I don't think there's reason to be sad if performance and fun driving experience is what you prioritize.

    Buy while you can! Nobody is sure how much longer the 3.0 will be in the Jeep. Be careful when turning out on the road from a stop! You don't need as much pedal to get the EcoDiesel going. I found it out the hard way 😂, also I gave 59K for mine, and I wouldn't sell it for that now. You either like these EcoDiesels or not.

    One of the other main differences between the gas and diesel version trucks is that typically the diesel is physically larger than it’s gas counterpart. This one is smaller, yet makes a lot of horsepower for it size but still 25 hp under the gas option which is almost 10%. That with it being 500lbs heavier the diesel does a good job at compensating but just not enough

  • @deanweller5789
    @deanweller5789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The biggest difference with the diesel over the gas counterpart is torque for towing, the 3.6L doesn't get good gas milage towing compared to the eco diesel which puts down 442 torque. Diesel will most likely outlast the gas engine as well, long term. And as soon as you start adding lots of weight on the gladiator, the gas version will not preform as well as the same truck in a diesel. ie: steel bumpers, sliders, skid plates , winch, roof rack etc...torque is what makes up for the extra weight!

    • @TheNovakReport
      @TheNovakReport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, but diesel has also often been promoted by automakers for its efficiency as a compression engine is more efficient with fuel use than a combustion one. And I made the reference that I did to illustrate that, given the huge price difference, you can't be looking at a Diesel Gladiator for fuel efficiency alone.
