I think that, and other trivia, goes to show that Mars Attacks is a movie that's best enjoyed with some context about the stuff behind the scenes. I feel like Doug's criticisms largely came from expecting a different movie. Obviously requiring a bit of insider info prior to watching a movie doesn't give it a pass, in fact I totally understand that it makes people dislike it, but I think it's given a little too little credit nonetheless.

Mars Attacks is a movie based on an overly violent children's trading card game from the 50s. If you go into it expecting it to just be a comedy movie, you're watching it for the wrong reasons. It's like watching Watership Down and getting mad that it wasn't a feel-good movie about cuddly bunny-rabbits. It's not technically a comedy; its JUST a goofy 50s B-Movie made in the 90s.

There is something strangely... mean in the way this movie treats its characters. Like you are suposed to hate these people and want them to suffer(as in those horror movies where every one is a dick), but the movie doesn't really give us reason to either like or dislike them. They are mostly just... going on with their lives. I don't know, it's kind of messed up.

Yeah, I'm also not on the same page as NC on this one. I really like Mars Attacks. I always took it as a parody which is played straight. So of course you don't have an overabundance of jokes. Everyone in this movie is trying to act as if this was real afterall. Still it manages to poke fun at the scifi genre, politics and society as a whole. I for one got most of the tropes Burton was referencing. The characters obviously don't have arcs and only one decisive trait, because they are charicatures of well known archetypes.

Just a single momentary talk at the very beginning would get him in trouble - he can't keep it for the end because most people may not see it at that point, and so he HAS to add a full on advertisement HALFWAY through the video even if it annoys the shit out of most people, tolerate it or quit youtubers who need to do this. Or just mute your audio when the ycome on an d skip it so you don't have to tolerate it. Literally 1000 different options then yelling at Doug who NEEDS to do this legally to satisfy your selfish overly expectant ego.

My theory is that the translator doesn't work properly. The scientists who built it are going on a LOT of assumptions as to how the Martian language works. Linguists spend years studying and translating languages and these guys just come in an say, "Hey, we made a translation machine and it only took two or three days." Take the scene when the Martians first land, how do we know they're really saying, "We come in peace"? They could be saying, "We claim this planet for the glory of Mars," or "Surrender now or die!" When the hippy releases the dove, notice how the ambassador scowls. This could be out of annoyance as to how stupid humans are and thinking, "OK, maybe killing a species as stupid as yours might do the universe some good!" Well, that's what I think anyway.

That's exactly how I felt about his review of The Mummy (the 1999 version). It's weird; it seems like there's quite a few that have actual, good constructive criticism, and then there's just plain criticizing for the point of criticizing.
Am I the only one who feels that way? Because I actually like his videos. But this - and **especially** the The Mummy review - just felt like hating on a movie just because.
Edit: Because there **IS** a difference between "constructive criticism" and just "omg, that was awful; did you see how awful that was?"-type criticism. The latter is just finding things to pick at and criticize; the former is where you actually say "wow, that was awful" and then end it with "here's why and how they could have made it better". That's how many of his episodes are; he'd say it's awful/great and then explain why. Not so much here. It's just weird to me.

So, in that sense, it's a lot like Terry Gilliam's Brazil or Zero Theorem. I don't see that as a criticism either. If a movie sets out to be a laugh-out-loud film, but fails to meet the mark (case in point, Boeing Boeing, ergh, that was such a swing-and-a-miss), then I'd criticize it for being unfunny. But when a film sets out to be a kind of a cynically humorous social satire, then it's kinda unfair to fault it for not being a belly-flopper.

It's a homage and reference to Ed Wood, it's the natural progression from that film. You criticised that the character's deaths don't mean anything. However, you didn't see the funny side and shock (at the time) to audiences that Michael J Fox, Jack Nicholson (twice) and Glenn Close die in a film. They never die in films. The film was meant to shock. The humour was in the absurdity and the shock value.

Mars Attacks! was a comedy masterpiece. A perfect satire of how Independence Day was dumb. So underrated. For example the guy who is into donuts because that his job is at the donut shop makes complete sense. The really weird humor and killing off all the big names in the cast is just brilliant, this movie is meant to feel alienish, from another planet. I swear this movie is uniquely genius. like @Fardin Mahi said a year prior to me, seems Doug missed the point. Truth is, Tim Burton knows what he's doing, some people just don't get it, he does Tim Burton.

The only memorable parts of this movie is the visuals.

Mars Attacks is my favorite Tim Burton movie, hands down. Like I love Burton (when he's good), and this is just the movie I love the most by him. The Batman movies are brought down by being a little too far away from the source material, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands just try too hard to be all goth and spooky and Nightmare before Christmas isn't his movie. So yeah Mars Attacks all the way.

    • @saidi7975
      @saidi7975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dude, the source material of Batman is about as stable as a game of jenga. Burton did an awesome job by mixing OG killer Batman with a 70's 80's Joker. Then Returns is among the best Bat elseworlds...

I don't think it's "funny" funny. It´s more Tim Burton funny. And I actually like Mars Attacks. It's based (loosely) of the cards and it was the first Burton movie I saw which didn't happen in a boring, cold, goth world. I also heard Jason's character was supposed to be played by Johnny Depp. Maybe it's not for you but like some asshole once said: Everything's not for everybody

Same- I was 6 when this came out so it kind of scared me, but still, it introduced to me to the macabre, heck I was so glad to actually SEE satire and parody to crappy movies such as Independence Day. with all the fake patriotism and so, it was refreshing to watch this movie. This movie is based on a pack of 60's trading cards, and you could say it has this 60's Mort Drucker Mad Magazine feel were it shows you the same scenes and dialogues as the movie it is parodying but with a twist and laughs. But just like, let's say the Grinch (this movie is way much better than that movie though) there's this amount of filler which makes it kind of... mmm... eh... this should've been like Batman Returns, but it's as if they gave us the 1989 Batman version- much more retained. Not saying it's bad, it could've been much more--- heck it even stinks executive producer with that happy ending. With all those celebrities, Tim Burton was way too conditioned.

Isn't the point that the translation was wrong? The Martians didn't actually come in peace, and they were probably not saying "Don't run! We are your friends!" in earnest while they're slaughtering people like animals (they had figured out what the translator was, and were trolling the hell out of the people they were killing - them trolling humanity is kind of a big thing). The person who created the translator was the man who was completely certain that the Martians would have to be peaceful since they have attained a higher form of society. When the "mows like a harvest" thing comes up, the humans think it's an error - but that may well be the only thing the machine actually got right.

That's kind of what I was going for, though. That the Martians have realized how bad the translation from the device is, and they say whatever translates into "Don't run! We are your friends!". Either way, there's some galactic level trolling happening in that movie. :)

In case someone doesn't know, Mars Attacks was a series of trading cards from the 60's that "kinda" had a story arc, but was mostly popular beacause of the gory drawings. Some scenes in the movie (like the cows on fire or Jack Black fighting back) are based on some cards. Now this trainwreck of a movie makes more sense.

I'm not so much questioning the act itself, I just find it hard to believe any military would spend taxpayer money rewarding said act.

Well, it's a bit late to file an indictment against him and even if you do, how are you going to punish him?
Without a military court sentencing him, he technically did die in the line of duty (no matter how cowardly).
So, should they go through the entire court case or simply bury him with a soldier's funeral? I'd say the latter is cheaper.

I see it as various charicatures fumbling through absurd situations and I can't tell you how I find it entertaining
