    I'm 53 and bought a new 16 model last fall. 3K miles now. Several street miles and couple track weekends. You are in for a treat. It's interesting to hear the inputs from someone with no liter bike experience and coming off a Harley. Wait till you get the rev limiter removed and cork past 10K rpm :)

    Very respectable video. Only video on the S1000RR isn't about doing wheelies, and taking it to the track everyday. An actual daily living with the bike video.
    Thank you Chris.

      Thanks Nick. I guess I owe an updated long term ownership video. I still have it and have put about 9000 miles on it. The bike is still bone stock & in perfect condition. It has also run flawlessly. No issues what so ever.

      Chris Scharfenberger excellent to hear!! Yes, it would be awesome to see the second part now after all the miles. Interested to see how everything’s held up, quirks you’ve found besides the initials ones,etc. Either way sounds like you found a winner!

    Hey Chris. Fantastic review.
    I too am older. I came to the same conclusion that if I'm going to own and ride a supersport, now is the time. Three weeks later with sore palms, little low back pain and cooked legs (I'm 5'7"); over 1,800 miles (that was not a typo), I still grin every time I straddle this beast riding around town or launching it on a twisty.

      That is a LOT of miles in a short amount of time. It is fun. I had a feeling the heat would affect shorter guys more. I was riding mine today and thought about how much I don't notice the heat. Simply a non issue for me. And nice job getting it done before you can't!! At least that is the way I looked at it. And thanks for the kind words about the review..

    It's not an auto shifter. It's for racing. It works the same every time when used in a racing scenario (more throttle on ups/ while braking on downs).... Everything you listed was the same complaints I had with my 1st thousand miles... I'll definitely need to buy a 2nd bike for comfortable, chill rides.

    Same thing here. Getting an s1000rr next week. Got a roadster at the same time. Those sportbike riders who complain about vibrations don't know shit about vibrating bikes.

  • @ravenmoto5948

    Yes it vibrates through the grips most at 4k rpm. Get some heavy bar ends and it takes almost all of it away. Yes the frame gets hot as hell. The quickshifter works awesome when u learn how to use it correctly. I only use User mode so you can set everything the way you want it! Dealer should of mentioned the red plug when u had service.

    To disengage cruise control smoothly roll the throttle forward and cruise control will disengage.

  • @Swampster70

    For the rear brake - don't use it. Just let the bike do it. It's one of the weird things I noticed when I got my 2016 S1000RR (also Premium edition in BMW motorsports colors) but the ABS and linked front-rear braking works really well so I no longer fuss about it. I used my bike for weekend fun and for commuting. On the weekend I have it in Sport or Race mode and for commute, it's in Rain Mode just because the way the bike handles in emergency braking. It's near impossible to get the rear tire off the ground when you 'panic stop' and given that I may need to do that when lane splitting in traffic (it's legal in California and no, I don't go crazy fast) I just want the bike in a Mode that will help save my behind when I need it to help.
    The heat - I hear you on that. I live near Sacramento and it gets toasty and the heat does get a bit 'warm'.
    The cruise control and front end dive. The bike was set up for a guy that weighed about 180lbs in riding gear. If you're not in that weight range, set the suspension as per the owners manual - or have someone do it for you. It'll solve the dive problem. Just a turn or two of the adjuster on the top of the right fork will do you.
    The shifter, here's what I got from it. My original one was broken and was replaced. Every once in a while it just seemed slow and sometimes just didn't want to change. Once replaced it was a dream. The only weird thing was downshifting. I found that it downshifting with the throttle slightly open made it change silky smooth. The other thing that helps is making sure that the chain is adjusted within spec. If it's outside of the 'sag' range, the bike does shift sloppier on downshifts.
    Would I buy it again? Just like you it's a "oh hell yes." I come from a background of racing bicycles on the road and for a sports bike I find it really comfortable.
    I look forward to other reviews.

    Terrific review.
    From a age of person where manners n thorough explanations are part n parcel of quality living.
    Cruise control in a turn? Wow... I'm wildly vigilant when I do that in my hard core, engine breaking fully electric car, it dips hard too.
    Anyways it may be numb or hard to do but practice keeping your foot on the rear break to pick up that play / slack n keep the feeling of the edge. Stick to it with least pressure and test play that line. It's a skill to practice for two weeks. You'll get it if you work it, then you'll feel way closer the the machine like a spider to the web.
    Looking forward to other reviews like this one.
    I'm gonna go love me some man wrist now 🐢

    Hello. I agree on every point you have mentioned. Heat problem ( ı cruise in town yeah in a little bit traffic and it goes in between 90-103 C and immediatelly a fan automaticly energized. Cools down again to 90 C. As soon as the fan stops its getting the temp around 103 again. When the heat goes up the power delivered goes down but I dont feel the difference :) ) + vibration problem ( with low throttle setting around 4000rpm on every gear, but if you try going like 7000-9000 rpm with just 1st 2nd or 3 rd gear it vibrates more than other 1000cc bikes ) + ı hear a sound like two small metal plate is touching each other at low throttle settings an dı dont know if it is a normal sound. + with cruise control engaged ı sometimes use slowing down with cruise control button itself if ı have time. But again ı agree the nose goes down and ı need to be prepared. + and really agree that ı try to use gear assist pro in town. But as you have mentioned it is a problem sometimes. With low throttle settings if you try upshift it pulls you forward. And in town it can be dangerous. You wanna ride with low rpm higher shift but with this problem you can be in trouble :) People suggest bar ends for vibration problem. But it will shift vibration to another place ı dont know if it can help. And for heat ı need to ride this in open roads. İt wants to go fast. İt wants lots of air coming in :) no solution comes to my mind. By the way thank you for the video. Waiting for the others...

    • @chrisscharfenberger6007
      @chrisscharfenberger6007  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm thinking that you need to take your bike in and have the sound it is making looked at. Or should I say "heard". My bike doesn't make any kind of noise like you described "two small metal plates touching". Almost sounds like it could be clutch related to me but that is just a guess.

      If you can afford the Premium Edition, go for it.
      Word has it that the 2019 is going to be the 'next generation' of the bike, so this will be the one available late 2018. I hear that the audible traction control from the HP4 Race will be on there but I'm not sure what else. Either way, the current bike is a truly awesome machine. I have a 2016 Premium in BMW Motorsports colors.

    Mine shifts inconsistently too, especially the auto blipper - sometimes smooth, other times a little jumpy. I find preloading it slightly gives a smoother shift, and the harder you rev it the better the shift assist pro works!

But all QS work differently in different rpms . But like i said some are just better and smoother than others. But its a known thing they are not perfect . Also you should be able to set the engine braking on the bike ..Cheers for the video mate !

    The biggest problem for me with cruise control is that it returns automatically to its previous setting once you start driving and if you're driving with one hand it can throw your balance off unexpectedly. Not good if you're twisted torso looking back to change lanes.

    • @chrisscharfenberger6007
      @chrisscharfenberger6007  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you might have a problem with your cruise control. Mine has never just automatically resumed cruise control. Once I hit the brake or pull the clutch in the cruise control is off until I hit resume or just reset it at a new speed.

    • @Swampster70
      @Swampster70 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on getting a bike. One word of advise - put it in Rain Mode and leave it in Rain Mode for a long time. Even in that mode it still has 180hp once you get out of 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd are dumbed down a lot and it's impossible to wheelie and endo in that mode. It really is a very easy bike to ride and as long as you keep it in Rain Mode and keep the revs under 7,000rpm it's very easy to ride - you get the best of both worlds, it's pretty light, it has world class brakes and ABS and if you have the model with auto shifter up and down then that's one less thing you have to worry about.
      It's not a case of getting used to the electronics - it's more of a case of reading the owners manual and realizing that you can let the bike do a bunch of stuff so you don't have too. If you get the fully loaded version it works like this:
      Clutch. It's something you use when you start and something you hold it at the traffic lights. Apart from that it's just something that's on the left side of the handlebar that never gets used.
      Rear brake pedal. It's there but but only for keeping from rolling backwards on a hill start. Apart from that, there's no need.
      Gear lever. It works without needing the clutch. The best thing - when you're coming to a stop you just need to feather the front brake with one finger and the 'rev matching' feature of the gear shifter means that rev matching while using the clutch is a thing of the past... And stop thinking about using the rear brake - the bike does that for you. Right hand does the brake, left foot changes gear - that's it. When you're almost at a stop then you can use the clutch unless you want to shift to neutral. Just think about it - no longer do you need to use you right hand and right foot to brake, you left hand to use the clutch while your left foot uses the gear lever and whilst doing all that you blip the throttle to match the revs - now you just feather the brake with the right hand and change gear with the left foot. Beyond easy.

    • @chrisscharfenberger6007
      @chrisscharfenberger6007  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with this except I have mine in Sport mode all of the time. The bike really is fantastically smart and does many things for you. It is also totally docile when you want it to be and an absolute beast above 8000 RPM. It is very, very easy to ride.

  • @d.c7464
    @d.c7464 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You really need to have the chassis set up by a pro. and there is a lot more to that then rebound and compression. sounds like the drive sprocket height needs to be moved.

    • @chrisscharfenberger6007
      @chrisscharfenberger6007  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are probably right but I have come a long way since I made this video. I am now very comfortable on the bike and my fingers can find all buttons & controls without having to look down. It is almost scary how easy it is to ride this thing. It is incredibly tame and easy to ride at low RPM's on the street. I'm never going to use this machine to its full capability. I'll also probably never have it on a track that turns. I will however have it out to my local drag strip next year. I can't wait to play with the launch control.

    • @chrisscharfenberger6007
      @chrisscharfenberger6007  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It just all depends on what you want. I looked at the VRod myself but a new one was going to cost more than the BMW S1000RR. I really wanted the S1000RR so that is that I did. It will take you a while to get used to the riding position however. I'd do it again in a hear beat.

    • @chrisscharfenberger6007
      @chrisscharfenberger6007  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The VRod is a much more comfortable bike.but the BMW is just raw speed. There is really no place to ride the BMW on the street like it could be ridden. If you like to ride say more than 50 to 75 miles at a time (at sane speeds) then you might want to stick with a cruiser/bruiser like the VRod. If you just have the need for speed then the BMW is hard to beat.
