Wow, Mili, you are the Queen when it comes to research and detail. It was such an excellent, informative video. I was surprised at what I was drawn to in your examples. I have a combination of nearly all the various style roots in my wardrobe 🙄. Almost all were purchased many years ago, before I knew anything of David Kibbe, etc. Some were brand new and some vintage. I can't wait for part two. Thank you so much for all of your excellent content 💗
@@katem3961 you're so welcome Kate, thanks for watching! I think that for most of us, we'll have coats to fulfil different combinations of needs (usually 1 or 2). So for example I have a "work" coat, a "date night / feminine" coat, and a more relaxed, practical and throw-on coat! I found that for these to work for me, they need to combine 2 needs / roots! Like yes I've had a black structured coat...but a RED structured coat (mountain + fire) is much better for me! Same with an interesting coat - yes I can have a pink coat, but a purple cape-like coat is much better (feminine+ sun) So I'm sure if you look into your coats, there will be some underlying elements that express parts of your personality and combine that with your life! I'm curious to hear your thoughts and excited to make part 2!
I’ve been on a style journey the past couple years and this has been the most detailed information I’ve come across! Definitely helped me narrow down what kind of coat I’d want to invest in.
Thank you so much! You went into so much detail with this and you did an amazing job. I really appreciate how much effort you put into your content. It really shows! It’s so informative and I love the visuals. Those are my favorite kind of fashion videos.
I ended up buying a new coat today and your video helped me a lot! Flower and fire are two of my style roots and I got a soft pink coat but in a long length with a tie around the waist ❤
Wow! What an exhaustive analysis! It's really helping me to understand the Style Roots system in general. I'm going to look at my coats differently now, understanding why I keep buying the same basic coat in different colours every year. 🤣
Wow, is right! So much work on this. I’ve never considered my choices of coats with such attention to all these aspects. But since outerwear is the first (and main) thing one sees of us- It’s important. Very thorough analysis using Ellie Jeans system. Thank you for a fabulous video that’s one of a kind.
These videos are so so so helpful 💕💕💕 Somehow you explain all these options in a way I can process and it makes everything much less overwhelming. It doesn’t even matter that I still don’t know my style roots!!! I’ve also noticed that on the rare occasion when I disagree about an item I know exactly why and I think it’s because you communicate very clearly. Same when I wonder about another item I’ve seen, I can easily find where I think it belongs. Your thinking is so organised that it helps me organise my thinking too! Which is honestly a miracle 😅
@@EmL-kg5gn aw thank you for the kind words Em, I truly appreciate that! Being clear in my communication and explanation is something I continuously work on, and I'm glad it's been helpful for you to be able to organise your own thinking! Thanks for watching and the support ❤️
Sun/Moon balance with a side of fire is what’s in my closet now… but, in my heart, I want to be in full sun mode. 😅 Honestly, I just didn’t find anything that fully met my preferences when I was shopping the second-hand market but I had no time to waste! So, I took the original black buttons off and replaced them with mismatched colourful ones.
@@szfrj I know what you mean, and you'll see in the next video I have 3-4 different coats, and they mostly cover 2 style needs. That's because for me, I have 3 distinct style needs, and so I can't fit them all into one coat (And I don't think we need to!)
Okay so I just found this coat that I love and it’s like an oversized mid-length wool coat in cream with some large stripes in a sort of chevron of dark green, plum and brown, but it’s actually kinda subtle. I was hesitating about buying it cause it’s still expensive, but my style roots are 🌸,🌞, an then 🪨 or 🌱 (still hesitating) so I think it matches perfectly !
I can’t say I’ve actively considered my style roots when buying coats but this is spot on. I have Earth, Stone and Mushroom as my style roots and the coats I wear the most are my super outdoorsy, green raincoat, my brown puffer jacket and my classic wool coat 😄 I’d be interested to know where people think Penny Lane coats fall. I think somewhere between Earth and Fire maybe? They’re very 70s and rugged which is very earthy but the fur and the shape of them make me think of fire maybe?
Great video, so many useful tips! I am a stone, and almost all of my coats are stone. I have some furry coats; since they're quite chunky/oversized, very comfortable and practical, can they be considered as stone?
I'd say so! For me, fur can have an elegant feeling (fire) or more of a fluffy / soft / relaxed feeling (stone/earth) - so unless it's some super glam fur coat you wear with a tight dress.. I think you're good! ☺️
@6pmmm hey! Yeah I was thinking of making a separate video in the spring about jackets (denim, bomber, leather, blazers etc). In a glance, I'd say bombers are stone as they're relaxed, often made out of synthetic fabric, and streetstyle, urban. But they can be made more sun if you add colour, interesting pattern, or some big details. Or more flower if you add embroidery and make them in delicate colours.
Now I "just" have to figure out my style roots, lol. But tbh I think I might have a different mix of roots depending on if I am in a private, business or family / friends environment. In private, I like things that are more sexy and / or edgy, but I feel those elements are too much when I am in an "official" setting. So I think although I love many of the options, if I want to keep my wardrobe small, I need to have a neutral one that is not too much in an extreme. Also, I have to say, many of the coats look awesome open, but in winter, I will not wear the coat that way. I have to bundle up to my ears!
@@happytofu5 I think it's totally normally to lean more heavily into one root or another depending on the situation - I am similar in terms of sexy / edgy in private, but definitely more paired back and professional at work (I play with colour but not with shapes or types of items!). I think 2 coats might be good- one is almost like a mushroom coat, quite neutral in many ways - that can go with anything really. And then maybe one that expresses that edgy / sexy side for everything else!
@@MiliVelikova Going through your analysis definetly helps figuring out what I should pick. I am thinking about a wrap coat, since I had one in the past and it definetly looked good on me. Maybe in a burgundy red. Its feminine, but dark enough to be a bit more on the edgy side I think.
I would agree with you... But I took "patchwork and checkerboard" directly from Ellie's book (trying to make sure I'm staying true to the source!) To me, patchwork definitely feels more Boho, but the important thing is - it's still in that relaxed spectrum (in my system)
I'd put the peacoat as a functional practical menswear inspired item since the peacoat is from a traditional American Navy Uniform coat style. I don't think of it as flower at all.
I hear where you're coming from! To me, all coats are first and foremost a practical item, in the sense that we have to wear them (Vs for example skirt / trousers / dress where we have a choice) - so in that sense, all coats will have a bit of that functionality (stone / earth) element to them As I said in the video, peacoats to me are primarily mountain / mushroom - they're exactly that uniform, structured coat - but if it's light blue, pink or cream, and especially softer fabric, it might have a touch of flower! A black or navy peacoat - I'd probably ignore the flower element!
In origin I agree but I knew what she meant! Where I live they’re definitely womenswear and I don’t think they’ve maintained that military association. In a light colour they’re considered a very girly choice! Navy or black is more classic. I think it goes to show how subjective fashion can be. Kind of like how red is a strong, bold colour in some places but a traditional, conservative colour in other places
