Don't waste time shifting gears.
The 1000hp capable Honda K24 in Mike Burroughs Stanceworks 244 GTK Ferrari build is useless without the ability to put power to the ground, and Scott Hilzinger of Haltech explains how the Haltech electronics system handles this via a Quaife 5-speed dog engagement gearbox.
This setup utilises a load cell gear knob and shift position sensor as well as other sensors on the car to give data on if the gear changing is optimal when it comes to keeping the car balanced and as fast as possible, with INCREASED reliability over manual gear shifts.
Also, why are 'pops and bangs' bad for an engine, and what can a tuner do to help avoid them to give some mechanical sympathy?

Did nobody have a milk crate for Andre to stand on for that interview?
No. But how about an oil drum? 😂 - Taz.

Was he standing?
@@hpa101 That's brilliant. Good work.
That's hilarious!
😆👍
Honestly I isn’t Andre pretty tall? That’s crazy how tall Scott is 😅😅. Great guys tho!
Great to finally hear a good explanation as to why crackle tunes are dumb.
We don't mind people having fun doing something we wouldn't so long as they are aware of the trade-offs 😎
Note that it is also just around these tuning methods with a focus on shifts. I'm sure what OEMs are doing for those 'burble' tunes is quite a bit safer. You'd hope so anyway - Taz.
@@hpa101 Speaking of burble, please could you guys do a video (or a Short) on precisely how ignition and fuel are cut/retarded for soft rpm limiters, popcorn maps, and what I call "DSG farts"? 😅
Regarding soft rpm limiters, I've never been able to find deeper explanation beyond a very vague "the ECU cuts selected ignition events."
And on popcorn maps: as much as I hate them, I'd still be very interested to know exactly how ign/fuel are cut to get those popcorn sounds, and also those fart noises VAG cars make between semi-auto gear changes!
This might help you in the meantime regarding the difference between 'soft' and 'hard' cuts/limiters. The longer webinar gets right into things, the next link is just a quick answer off the cuff from a live lesson.

If you don't have Gold Membership I 'think' that first one might be here on YT somewhere as well 😉 - Taz.
Shhh dont tell them it’s gonna keep bringing work for years to come
Did you get a neck ache during that interview Andre?
Scott is certainly the type of tuner we all look up to! - Taz.
First time seeing this channel. This interviewer is one of the best I’ve seen. Knows how to explain to the audience exactly what’s going on and engages with the expert perfectly! Subbed! 🤘🏻
You are in for a treat. All their content is like this. Their podcasts with industry leaders is also fantastic.
@@CP110 looking forward to trawling the back catalog - thanks for the comment fella :)
He's the Bob Villa of motorsports.
Cheers for the support team!
Glad you found us @UXXV and hope you enjoy working your way through some more interview topics. Scott Hilzinger in particular here is in a few and is a very well spoken and knowledgable chap which makes it easy 😎 - Taz.

@@hpa101 awesome. Thanks I will check them out! 😁
This father/son interview was amazing. Thanks guys!
In all seriousness, it was great all around!
A clean, smooth calibration is a thing of beauty in and of itself. Watch ANY well-setup racecar's onboards. The biggest thing you'll notice is just how SMOOTH the shifts are - especially on part-throttle upshifts and off-throttle downshifts.
Get more "tuning fork" on the channel! Scotty is a great addition!
Always a pleasure chatting to him. Did you check out his podcast episode from a while back too? - Taz.

Just brought a Elite 2500 myself. I tell people pops and bangs are bad but they don't listen. When I hear that I cringe.
Only two of the worlds best tuners sharing knowledge. So much to learn
I always knew pops-n-bangs were bad, but i never thought about the fact that it literally forces percussion into the valve - and so into the camshaft.
Great explanation. I wonder what kind of difference it makes depending on if its a pushrod/rocker arm, roller cam hydraulic lifter, or solid lifter setup?
👆💯💯💯👍
Necks were hurt during this interview
So glad my tuner is heavily involved in motorsport and hates pops and bangs as much as i do! Scotty is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to tuning!!
I have had so many questions about this and you just answered them all. Thanks!
TuningFork 💪🏆😎
awesome interview and questions
Love seeing 2 smart guys like Scottie & Andre talk tech 👌
Interesting video! Thanks for the info and explanation!
Legend has it that Scotty is only 1.65m tall
He sure is! But only while sitting 😂 - Taz.
www.hpacademy.com/assets/Taz-Articles-and-Blogs/9276ec2192/short-andre-tall-scott-hilzinger.jpg
I had never considered the valvetrain being harmed due to a poor quality "crackle" tune! Thank you for always sharing valuable information with us.
god i love when these two talk on camera
Curious if different weather climates will affect the flat foot shifting , introduction of snow, or rain conditions?
Enjoyed this episode of HP Academy. Thank you, Boss Simon
Awesome video as always
This is why I love TA2 class
Person of height
Cool, but not what I expected from the title. Better one would be "Dogbox Controller Magic"
Great video good info
I have to mention damn Scott's tall
I never thought of what pops and bangs are doing to the valve train😮 but it can't be good for your catalytic converter, turbo, and exhaust system either
As far as rev matching on the upshift goes - is that just a matter of sacrificing mechanical sympathy or does the fuel/spark cut drop the RPM enough to match the new ratio?
Man, we sound similar, Aussies and Kiwis. I suppose we are the same people with the same ancestors from the same places.
Accents and how they form is pretty fascinating eh! - Taz.
Awsome video
So do the same issues with the exhaust valve apply to 2-step on a drag car (or my road car with launch control)?
Yes,even worst, i have broke rockers arms and bent valves
Is there any advantage to cutting fuel AND spark vs just cutting fuel? Doesn't seem to me like it would make a difference either way but just curious if I'm overlooking something.
Pre Detonation
Just fuel can cause a lean condition
Hailtek did all they could with old technology, but they can do better by designing a transmission w/o lifting your foot by adding parallel gears. Running 2 gears at the same time you can transition w/o letting go of torque to shift.
i had pops and bangs tune, ignition cut flat shift is the exception
I gotta find that video that describes the issue with up shifting where the sr20 valves end up in trouble. Is this an interference issue?
No, the shims will fall out. The way to fix it so that won't happen is to dump the shims and Tip the valves which means custom valves.
@@spooler7828I thought the non VE heads also broke rockers
I've delt with the Sr lash pad issue for years. Hks or gk tek rocker stopers. Limit rpm delta to only 400 rpm.
My Corolla hatchback exhaust does a pop it naturally once a while, is that okay?
3:09 is that a i4 or a rotary start up?
I have a carbureted one, sometimes I turned it off on load, it pops heavily, it's that bad?
its not good, but you cant cut carb fuel feed.
Unless your carb has an air cutoff valve it will pop on decel. No jets or needles will fix it.
this is essentially the same as a motorcycle quickshifter/autoblipper
Pops and Bangs, modern day ricer mod. I remember seeing at a car meet, there was an exhaust competition, this R34 gtr had massive pops and bangs, then he had a knocking sound coming from the valve train. He managed to some how slowly "massage" the knock away with gentle revs. Also had my mate piss out coolant in his evo, just created excessive cylinder pressure and pressurised the crankcase. Needless to say, not great for any engine.. Just stick with burbles and turbo noises.
Tuning Fork and Tuning Desert Fork
Andre interviewing Andre the Giant! 😂
How’s the neck after that interview?
In those days there were giants in the earth...
yeah Scotty!!!
Cant you use the throttle, a DBW throttle to do the same thing?
Will bring boost down on a turbo car.
@@mandytuning So if its a NA car, its no problem then?
Is Scott tall, or or is Andre short? Holy smokes.
Scott is BIG.
Jeezuz that dude is like 8ft tall
Scott is bigger in real life.
You should stand up when interviewing people.
The people with the pops and bangs care more about drawing attention than performance 😂😂
hmmm 10ms, if you cut that in half, and assume 30 shifts per lap, thats 0.15 sec!
Some one stole all the food as a kid. Sheeeeeweeeee.
That feeling when you don't have valves 💪
But I love the pops and bangs
They can just come with a risk in the situations discussed - Taz.
@@hpa101does a turbo hurt or help with pops and bangs?
So its basically just a bidirectional quickshifter on a sportbike.
In other news, grass is green and the sky is blue
My lawn is brown all summer and science says the sky is actually violet, so not sure what to do here 😅 - Taz.
@@hpa101 touché
Why so sloppy?
You know the speed of the car and the next gear. Almost all cars have an electronic throttle and the ECU completely controls the engine. You can set the engine RPM exactly for the next gear.
Umm I know why you waited to release this video... didn't he go through 1 or 2 transmissions at that event ??
If only we were that organised to actually have a plan on what we film and when we release it 😂
I had completely forgotten about any issues they had. Reply with more detail on what happened beyond the video linked below (if you know anything that is!) noting Quaife also came to the party to rebuild the box.
That fact and also how you can see it popped out before a shift means Scotty here is safe I reckon 😂
Ultimately this is a race car doing race car things and sometimes things break 🤘 - Taz.

My turbo gives a loud bang after shift witch i love, these guys with their golf gti's pop and bang after acceleration ba bab ba ba ba ba is stupid
i always hated this tune and the fact that people think they are cool with this doggshitt tune. an ignition cut bang on shift is much cooler
Oh gosh its not ear it is air mister😂😂😂
So well tuned that blow up a brand new gearbox 😂😂😂
That Quaife is rebuilding. Wonder why they would do that if it was a simple tuning issue which there is plenty of data from the car to identify if that was the case 😎
It is a race car doing race car things, and no one is infallible, but be careful with the finger-pointing like this even if it's in jest 🤘 - Taz.
It is not to my knowledge that this car has torque sensors in any shaft, that would be relevant piece of information for Quaife. In this case, a car with above average performance, does anyone know what the instantaneous torque is after an instantaneous reintroduction of power? In my opinion they are rebuilding the gearbox because this is one of the best known cars on the internet to use a gearbox from them it was widely reported that it had problems during the race and they have a reputation to uphold. Making mistakes is part of Human nature, and only those who do nothing don't make mistakes, admitting mistakes demonstrates humility, this is how we evolve.
We all have opinions, but laying blame based off nothing but opinion from a few videos on the internet is not always an opinion worth sharing is the point I was trying to make there 🤘
As mentioned, no one is infallible which extends beyond those working on the car 🤘 - Taz.
These quaife K series sequential gearboxes are very unreliable in my experience.
Got to admit....kinda tickled yer embracing the rising sun pony....neat hybrid making better it seems...
But pops n bangs = dopamine 🥹
Sure! There are always exceptions too, but hearing them from someone elses car is a cheaper & more reliable way (for you) to get that dopamine hit perhaps 😂 - Taz.
@@hpa101 I hate pops and bangs. Can't stand it.
@spooler7828 I like them at the race track. I hate them outside my house at 3am 😂 - Taz.
♡♡♡♡♡
The comments about the height difference its just too much😂....cudnt even follow wat they talking about.

#notificationgang! Hope you enjoyed this one mate =)
This interview would be funny if you stood on a stool
Next time perhaps 😅
I can't tell if you're tiny or he's gigantic, lol.
Scott is very tall. A friendly, knowledgeable giant in the aftermarket tuning industry =) - Taz.
I think you accidently put the wrong title on your video. Title ->pops and bangs. Video content -> racing clutches. Pops and bangs have nothing to do with the clutch.

Races are won by tenths of a second per lap
Have you ever looked at any data or are you shooting from the hip on that? - Taz.
this man has never been involved in racing and it shows
Okay boomer
Are you specifically talking about dog boxes? Or are you saying a typical street transmission could keep up with the same car with a race gearbox?
Great stuff!
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed this one 🤘
Scotty is such a leg end
@hpa101 These videos are interesting, exciting and packed with a lot of useful information. My only criticism is that in every video the interviewer clearly understands the topic very well and spends most of the interview guiding the interviewee to say the right thing in the right way.
Could HPA instead do any needed research upfront and then distill the information into a concise informational video without the need to show an interview? That way, information would be presented accurately and succinctly, much like in the many great HPA courses.
So.... a HPA webinar?
@@asian4747 Maybe. It could be even more scripted than a webinar. You can present the same information more clearly in half the time. Add some B-roll and some animations, and you have motorsport education gold.
Their paid content is pretty much exactly what you describe. HPA podcasts and these short interviews are a great way to hear industry professionals "put pen to paper" instead of just displaying the bullet points.
I am a huge fan of this format and recognize Andre's talent at getting the right answers out of people; being a good interviewer takes a lot of practice. These videos and interviews complement their paid web courses well.
