  • I shot this video of the EF-4 tornado that blasted through Henryville, Indiana on March 2, 2012. I shot it out the back door of my house that is approximately a quarter of a mile away from the twister itself..video clearly shows multiple vortices. Please comment and tell me what you think. AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE VIDEO. Thank you.

Thank you for this valuable video. The Henryville tornado is notable in that its multivortex nature is unusually clear. The tornado actually is several tornadoes twisting around each other. As for the tree falling down, the funnel is the visible part of a tornado, but the tornado often extends far out from the visible funnel, in a few documented cases up to a mile (!) and smaller vortexes often dance away from the funnel, which accounts for isolated damage away from the main path.

Bruce Lee You should watch other videos of the same tornado. You'll learn your opinion changes quickly. It's hard for midwestern tornadoes to look like the ones you may see in Oklahoma, but this tornado has a definite shape to it and packed a mighty punch.

first of all, don't compare waterspouts to supercell-spawned tornadoes. I'm not aware of any waterspouts in recent times ripping violently through a neighborhood like that. Ditto with hurricanes. You have fucking DAYS to get out of a hurricane's path or prepare accordingly, and it does not appear suddenly from the sky one day. (more or less, I know conditions can be forecast days in advance, but when you get Tornado Watches all spring like where I live you can not pack up and flee or cower in your basement/cellar all day & night.
edit: I meant ditto as in ditto don't compare hurricanes to supercellular tornadoes, not that they don't tear up human settlements

I wouldn't doubt that this thing had faster forward motion than the supposed fastest-moving tornado ever, the Tri-state tornado. This beast was moving insanely fast, and could have very well been moving at 75+ mph at various points, even if it was only briefly.
The sheer violence and rotational speed reminds me of the 2016 EF-4 that was very well documented in Oklahoma (Wynnewoode
    I believe).

I thought that too!! But I’m from the UK (we never have large tornadoes, not currently anyway!) and I personally didn’t realise that the space left by the tornado would have such suction behind it to cause a massive tree to fall down after the tornado has passed.
Might sound stupid, be kind lol. But are the rear flank drafts ever strong enough to pull structures and debris etc from the back of the tornado, into the funnel again to be spat out again? Just wondered as the tree fell in the direction of the back of the funnel and not to the side.

Absolutely right.. this is a very small town with one fire station, and the fire station is where the ONLY siren is coming from. The residents living in "town" can hear them fine..but once you get out in the more rural area, of the neighboring towns it hit, you cannot hear the warning sirens. But we all knew that severe weather was to be expected that day, just didnt know HOW severe.

A very good, and very dangerous close shot. There is definitely no denying that footage is pretty awesome, catchign such a violent and dangerous tornado from a fairly close position. Dangerous for two reasons: With the wind/inflow surrounding it being near power lines and being in the open in the debris path was not a smart play. I am glad that you were not injured and were able to capture such wonderful footage.

It's hard to get footage like this. Everything was just right. The tornado was not wrapped in rain. It did not come directly at the person with the camera. The debris wasn't so thick that you couldn't see what was going on inside of the funnel cloud. The tornado hit closely enough that you could see inside without being so close he had to run for cover. The land was flat enough that there weren't big hills in the way or enormous trees in the way. And since it was early March, the leaves had not come out on the trees yet.

    Gee willikers, that's thing's a fucking juggernaut!
I live in Louisville, so it's creepy to think that this monster was wreaking death and destruction just a few minutes north. It barely even rained in our neighborhood, though.
Amazing vid, among the best tornado vids ever. Good thing it isn't THE best tornado vid ever, because the best tornado vid ever was probably recorded on a camera that got smashed, along with the cameraman, against an spinning airborne mobile home.

To the comments of (fool hardy), it what probably is. To the other comments of amazment at mother nature, it realing is amazing, the sites of nature behaving like this is extremly hard for those who find it amazing to hold themselves back. Its not something they can just hide from. There is a sense of wanting to "learn" from it somehow, if only through the experiense of seeing it. Good footage brother, was glad to see it didn't cost you any injury. The tone in your voice said it all.

You were watching an upper-end EF4 tornado moving past you at close range -- I think most people would probably have said the same things you did under the same circumstances.
If it's any consolation: during the Texas wildfires in 2011, a wildfire came within six blocks of our house. When we saw the wall of flame heading towards our neighborhood, my Mormon neighbor and I (Lutheran) both dropped the f-bomb.
Extraordinary circumstances warrant more than, "Gosh!" "Dog bite it!" "Mercy me!"

I'm trying to pin point what street this was filmed from on Google Earth but can't seem to figure it out.
The multiple vortices are amazingly apparent and the tornado looks terrifying. I've never in my life seen a video of a tornado moving that fast. NWS says it was moving at 70 mph, and possibly even faster.

I live in Kentucky and I remember this outbreak was predicted for a couple of days, but we did NOT know how severe like you say. It seemed like every storm had a tornado in it. Of course the one you filmed is one of the main ones, along with the W. Liberty Kentucky tornado. Very bad day indeed. Glad you are safe and shared this video with us. Ignore the morons talking about how you are cussing. Last time I checked seeing a tornado is rare and terrifying. Some people are self righteous assholes.

Reminds me of the Andover tornado right after it hit the air force base and began transitioning into its wedge-esque configuration.
Would love to see somebody clean this video up. Stabilize it, fill in the spots where the video briefly chokes, that sort of thing.

Listen to that sucker roar! Reminds me of the Katie-wynwood Oklahoma tornado which had the most intense rotation I’ve seen in recent history plus both were high end f-4 killers

It was a low end EF4, with winds from 170 to 175 MPH.

I have yet to see a tornado in person and would like to do that some day. I, too, would probably have the same reaction as you seeing something that awesome so close. Great video!

I hope to never see a tornado no matter what the circumstance. Yes they may be spectacular and powerful, but causes too much damage and can take away your life if not careful.
