Saw Mos Def a few years back. Looked forward to it more than any concert I had been to and ended up going on my own because none of my mates were interested. When I got there, his set was made up of EDM/ borderline art house remixes of his classics. He would perform about 30 seconds of the original track, then tell the DJ to stop the music and run the latest version of the song. A few new tracks in there too which didn’t stray away from his new found genre. It was all a bit trancey and art house, and I’m not gonna lie, I was disappointed I couldn’t hear the music I was so fond of in the flesh, but then I respect Mos Def as an artist , actor and performer, so much so that it felt more like a privilege to listen to where he’s taking his new musical direction. I left the gig not full of adrenaline and awe, but with a new perspective on music writing as a whole.
