Saw Mos Def a few years back. Looked forward to it more than any concert I had been to and ended up going on my own because none of my mates were interested. When I got there, his set was made up of EDM/ borderline art house remixes of his classics. He would perform about 30 seconds of the original track, then tell the DJ to stop the music and run the latest version of the song. A few new tracks in there too which didn’t stray away from his new found genre. It was all a bit trancey and art house, and I’m not gonna lie, I was disappointed I couldn’t hear the music I was so fond of in the flesh, but then I respect Mos Def as an artist , actor and performer, so much so that it felt more like a privilege to listen to where he’s taking his new musical direction. I left the gig not full of adrenaline and awe, but with a new perspective on music writing as a whole.
This is so awesome. I find there are two great types of artists. CCR knows who and what they are about. It is a crime none of their stuff went no. 1. Every one of their singles got in the top 5, and made songs that you cannot forget to put in a top songs of the decade. Saw the live in was fantastic. Then there is Beck. No two albums sound remotely the same. Some are hit and miss with me. The ones that hit though. Speak to my soul. Without those misses I/he wouldn't have the hits.
Had the same experiencs. The legend was giving away flowers and I mean that. A powerpoint presentation and all that, some skits of classics. Really a shame. I dont care that he is a legend I came to see him perform on some hiphop shit. The Mos from BoBS and Ecstatic is gone

Yo, the way I feel, sometime it's too hard to sit still
Things are so passionate, times are so real
Sometimes I try to chill, mellow down, blowin' smoke
Smile on my face but it's really no joke
You feel it in the street, the people breathe without hope
They going through the motion, they dimming down the focus
Their focus get cleared, then their light turn sharp
And the eyes grow teary, the mind grow weary
I speak it so clearly, sometimes ya'll don't hear me
I push it past the bass, no nations got to feel me
I feel it in my bones, black, I'm so wide awake
That I'm hardly ever asleep, my flow forever deep
And it's volumes or scriptures when I breathe on the beat
My presence speak volumes, before I say a word
I'm everywhere penthouse, pavement, and curb
Cradle to the grave, tall cathedral of a shell
Universal, ghetto life, holla black, you know it well
Quiet storm, vital form, pen pushed it right across
Mind is a vital force, high level right across
Shoulders, the lions raw voice is the siren
I swing round, ring out, and bring down the tyrant
Shocked a small act, could knock a giant lopsided
The world is so dangerous, there's no need for fighting
Suttins trying to hide, like the struggle won't find him
And the sun bust through the clouds, to clearly remind him
He's everywhere: penthouse, pavement, and curb
Cradle to the grave, tall cathedral of a shell
Universal, ghetto life, holla black, you know it well
[[Chorus: Mos Def and Slick Rick]]
