How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

I agree with you 100% I've been following Common since the release of his album Like Water for Chocolate back in 2000. I had just moved to Chicago & all I remember is hearing this dope, but different type of rap style I'd never heard before paired with this funky jazz music😃 I had completely forgotten about why I went back there & become focused on figuring out who knew where that music was coming from so I could get a copy of it for myself after work!!😁

So weird to call his delivery "old-school". Like, he's just rapping. It's not drill, nor backed by an 808; but why is it considered "old". Sound like you're saying "not relevant".
I think there's a decided group of styles out there today, that reflect the many parts of hiphop. "Radio" or popular styles you hear now, don't constitute all that hiphop offers today.
Let me repeat this - "Radio" or popular styles you hear now, don't constitute all that hiphop offers today.
      Seriously, it doesn't.
It comes thru with many artists, relevant TODAY and in their 20s and 30s, who tour the world today doing concerts. Just becuase someone isn't on Hot97, the XL freshman list, or the 107.5 105.1's, doesn't mean its not being done. Really understand this, as there are many many examples of crews putting in work TODAY with this "old-school" style, making dolla's. Real Talk.
There's many people all over the world that don't consider Common "rapping" to be "old-school".
      Weird terminology bruh.

Common is the most underrated storyteller of our genre. Jay, Nas, Big & Pac's props' are well deserved - but you cannot leave out Common. Not only a great storyteller - one of the greatest orators of our time. And Bilal's vocals? Infectiously haunting. With a killer band holding their own - bassist Derick Hodge (who I had the pleasure of meeting after Afropunk this year), Robert Glasper on keys, Keyon Harold on coronet, Kareem Riggins on drums/percussion, and Elena, OH Elena! - she is a precious songbird on flute and vocals. Anyone that doesn't enjoy this NPR concert needs to have their "musical pulse" checked. Loved how Common referenced the 13th Ammendent by pointing it out in the Presidential library. Salute to all involved in this segment.

What an incredible artist. Amazing that we have a President who is hip enough to have music like this in the White House. Makes me proud to be an American. We are going to miss Barack Obama.
