Sting and Wayne Shorter received the Polar Music Prize on June 15, 2017 at a ceremony at Konserthuset Stockholm, Sweden. Several artists honored the Laureates together with the The Royal Stockholm Philarmonic Orchestra, led by maestro Hans Ek.
Artists performing in tribute to Sting and Wayne Shorter, included Gregory Porter, Jennie Abrahamson, Lennart Åberg, Marius Neset, José Feliciano ( • José Feliciano perform... ), Jelena Krstic, Josefin Runsteen, Ane Brun ( • Ane Brun and friends p... ), Linnea Olsson, Fredrik Ljungqvist and The Tallest Man On Earth ( • The Tallest Man On Ear... ).
José Feliciano also read the citation for Sting ( • Sting receives the Pol... ):
"The 2017 Polar Music Prize is awarded to the singer, musician and composer Sting, real name Gordon Sumner, from Wallsend in Northumberland. Sting grew up in a shipyard town in northeastern England. As a child his thoughts and dreams roamed as far as the ships that sailed from his town. Internal and external travel has also characterised his music. As a member of the trio The Police, and later as a solo artist, Sting has never sat back and rested on his laurels; he has put down his anchor in more musical harbours than perhaps any other artist of his generation. As a composer, Sting has combined classic pop with virtuoso musicianship and an openness to all genres and sounds from around the world. Sting is a true citizen of the world, who has also been indefatigable in using his position as an arena-filling artist to promote human rights."
The Polar Music Prize was founded in 1989 by the late Stig ”Stikkan” Anderson, one of the true greats in the history of popular music. As the publisher, lyricist and manager of ABBA, he played a key role in their enormous success. Its name stems from Anderson’s legendary record label, Polar Music.
The Polar Music Prize is one of the most prestigious and unique music prizes in the world, crossing over musical boundaries and awarded to individuals, groups and institutions in recognition of exceptional achievements.

Sting wrote a timeless, classic song and Gregory Porter made it unforgettable. It's beautiful!!
Let’s give credit where credit is due.
The leitmotif of this song was written by Michael Kamen for Lethal Weapon 1-3.
Sting - vocals, backing vocals, bass
Eric Clapton - acoustic and electric guitar
Steve Gadd - drums
Michael Kamen - keyboards, strings arrangement
Stephen McLaughlin - percussion
David Sanborn - alto saxophone
@@yourpalanon8182BullShite 🤡
Sting, Clapton and michael kamen were the official composers.
According to a youtube-clip with Sting,it was Clapton who came up with the music and Sting who wrote the lyrics.
Phony 🤡 of holly wood
I agree
I actually had the opportunity to see this live. Transformed the atmosphere in the room completely. It was pure magic.
You were really there ? did the audience like this? its hard to tell from a video peace 2 u
You were quite fortunate. Brilliant rendition.
OMG that's wonderful 😊
Wish I could've been there!
Superb!
Who's in tears right now?.. It's probably me. Well done, sir! 👏
Watching this on my way to work…on the bus…in tears, myself. Beautiful
😂😂😂😂😂😂
But you need to ask yourself why are you in tears?
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Isaiah 45:17
“But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.”
This comment is soo good 😂😂
Me, it hit that chord.😢
6 years later and still keep coming back to this wonderful rendition of this song!! Pity it’s never been released as a download!!
Same friend
I found it on Apple Music and Spotify, it’s included in Porter’s collection: Still Rising.

Same here...
Just rip the audio from this file. Pretty easy to do with 4K Video Downloader or something similar. Then you can put it in your iTunes Folder on your computer and push it to your phone. aac format for Apple devices. Some of the people I like who sound way better live (Milk Carton Kids, Mandolin Orange, etc.) than they sound in the studio (most producers don't have the talent to capture an excellent artist in the studio), I have to grab their audio like this.
You gotta admire the guts it takes to sing a classic song in front of the artist who wrote and sang the original ❤
Talk about a pressure cooker!!

Sting knows that the guy on stage did a better job singing this song...I dont even hear the original in my head anymore...

I respect and love both artists tremendously. For those who criticize this rendition let me be clear....the mark of a true artist is not to create an exact duplication, but to elevate the work in a manner that is true to the artist performing the work. That's what Porter does. If you search for Stevie Wonder's version of Fragile, Stevie makes it his own. The true beauty is that Sting created a masterpiece capable of duplication for inspiration. THAT is the gift....it keeps on giving.
Thank you, beautifully said. No need for me to add anything here as it was my feeling exactly.
@@davidmalik9821 I'll double that expression - TY Desiree!
Indeed - he makes it his own. And I'd like to chip in on the Stevie's version of Fragile, even Sting had to nod his head at the mastery of Stevie's version - there was nothing to say. Mike drop.
Well said
Interpretation is the magic.
My God who’s still here! Can’t stop watching

@@RocketCalcuttaYOU obviously know absolutely nothing about singing and the whole process of feeling the music. Sting sings out of tune all the time. I've heard him at concerts. I don't care because it's ALL ABOUT THE VIBE!!!!🎙🎶
@@FunkyCarla but you have to admit that this voice crack is the opposite of soothing 🤣
Agreed , indeed .
That's what you call elevating a song, as Mr. Porter taps into the pain of the character with his bold rich tones. Par excellence.
Gregory's voice is like warm chocolate on a strawberry 🍓
This is one of the very rarest cover songs -- this artist snatches the song entirely out of the hands of the author and makes it more real. THAT WAS FUCKING MAGNIFICENT

Terry Hampton 😂😂😂 I appreciate your honesty and your appreciation for what truly is a beautiful song. The lyric is full of thought provoking meaning and the melody is charming. And although the song originated with Sting, Gregory personifies the very image he sings of--and that personification is just the opposite image that the audience, themselves, portray. I wish I could've been paid $10 for every analytical thought they had. Man, I'd of left there with my pockets bursting at the seams!!!
Gregory Porter elevated that song to a higher level knowing that it is already a great one - Outstanding

Nobody better Sting! This man first! Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels😆
Keep coming back to this one. Seeing the audience totally enraptured by this brilliant rendition, especially the man in spectacles to the right is worth it in itself.
The spectacled man is a Swedish artist named Tomas Ledin. His artistry is sort of a poor mans version of Sting (my personal opinion).
Now that’s how you cover a LEGENDS song with them in the audience and ROCK IT!!!!
He captures the emotion behind the lyrics in his voice. And that orchestra! WOW!!!
The orchestra is right! I get goosebumps 💝
Sounds like he’s been taken out of the 1970’s soul scene and transported to now. Great voice, tempo and tone.
Yes dude, very special.
I strongly 💪 agree!
Absolutely. Well said. From a time gone long by his voice and interpretation of this song sound.
The fact that he measure a beat with his fingers on mic tube tells you something about his abilities.

Nodding along thinking this is gold, best performance of the night Porter absolutely owns it.
If the night turned cold
And the stars looked down
And you hug yourself
On the cold, cold ground
You wake the morning
In a stranger's coat
No one would you see
Ask yourself, 'Who'd watch for me?
'My only friend, who could it be?'
It's hard to say it
I hate to say it
But it's probably me
When your belly's empty
And the hunger's so real
And you're too proud to beg
And too dumb to steal
You search the city
For your only friend
No-one would you see
You ask yourself, 'Who could it be?
'A solitary voice to speak out and set me free'
I hate to say it
I hate to say it
But it's probably me
You're not the easiest person that I ever got to know
And it's hard for us both to let our feelings show
Some would say
I should let you go your way
You'll only make me cry
But if there's one guy, just one guy
Who'd lay down his life for you and die
It's hard to say it
I hate to say it
But it's probably me
When the world's gone crazy, and it makes no sense
And there's only one voice that comes to your defence
And the jury's out
And your eyes search the room
One friendly face is all you need to see
And if there's one guy, just one guy
Who'd lay down his life for you and die
It's hard to say it
I hate to say it
But it's probably me
I hate to say it
I hate to say
But it's probably me
I hate to say it
I hate to say
But it's probably me
I hate to say it

What a proud proud moment for a true song writer, to hear your words be sung and spoken by such a vocal master!! This song is truly timeless and the lyrics and the musical arrangements are simply superb!!!! And Mr. Gregory Porter, you better saaaaaang!!! Give it up for the orchestra too!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤Sheer perfection!!!!
This man's voice is filled with pure soul. Me and my fiancée watched him at the Royal Albert Hall this summer 2023- and have tickets to see him again at the same venue in December 2023. I lived in hostels and have been without friends or family during my life. This song sings straight to my heart and soul. Of course Gregory Porter is going to smash this, He's a singer. Sting is a songwriter first and foremost. Many of the greats in songwriting aren't entirely technically correct singers, but they sure do have bucketloads of passion in their creations in order to pull it off! @DameTremonti its ah great great song one of the greatest songs of all time, that fact can't be debated.
Tears, involuntary rhythmic body movements. It's the magic of music in all its splendor! Marvelous!
Unglaublich, Porter wie immer faszinierend und mit dem Orchester einfach atemberaubend!
The royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestra is killing it!!!
INDEED!!!!!
Alleluja!
The man sitting to Trudy's left is feeling every feeling a human can feel. At one point he closes his eyes, throws his head back, and expresses pure ecstasy.
That is Tomas Ledin, a Swedish artist.
Envy on another level when I saw this lol
It’s a feeling some only experience once in a lifetime! Absolutely beautiful 🙌
Mannnn.. that’s how I would be if I was there 🥲
And the man sitting to Trudy's right looks rather skeptical and non appreciative. Trudy herself is quite aware that she is on camera, and being an actress, I guess she thinks she is displaying quiet interest.
@@Themanwhocameback2 what you wrote doesn't make sense whatsoever
Absolutely incredible performance and he made it look effortless.
The band/orchestra was on top form.
The way he commanded that room and paid homage at the same time is astounding.
