Just took my Supra to the Tail of the Dragon and you can definitely feel the weight, 3400lbs. However, it’s handling and power delivery is second to none with the ZF transmission. I really enjoyed it on the tail.
its odd like that in that 2800 lbs versus 3400/3500 is noticeable huh? I drove my friend's BMW 135 twin turbo and the power, engine mass, and car mass did not feel light in the mountains. You have to measure yourself to not add too much sauce.
Great review. Colin Chapman was right, lighter is better. It honestly looked like you were carrying more speed through the corners in the 86. The 86 is just great bang for your buck. I've actually gone the opposite way when buying tires, instead of going wider, I go a little narrower. You give up a little traction, and the handling limits aren't as high, but in my experience the car seems to communicate a little more clearly allowing you to explore the limits more easily, and at a lower speed. This may not be great for the track, but for the street it works for me. Enjoyed the video.
I'm pretty sure I was carrying more speed in the 86. With my new 295 tires, the suspension is not properly dialed in and the tires were rubbing the front fenders so I was taking it a bit easier.
I found just lowering springs gave me the communication I wanted in the twins. Same with Abarth I don’t know why just getting an inch lower helps so much.
For most driving the Supra will not allow you to push throttle all the way. He could only do that in straights. So he is taking it to track because regular roads won't allow that. So the lighter car can explore the limits more and you can push it further.
@jamesmedina2062 You can say the same thing about a new Miata, except you would also have the benefit of top down driving, making a momentum car more enjoyable. But on the highway, the Supra is a rockstar/ballistic missile that makes the extra cost and exclusivity all the more worthwhile.
Thank you for doing this comparison! I just sold my 21’ STI to try and get into a built from the ground up sports car and these two are my top picks. I’ve driven the supra and an n55 m2. The supra felt much more special to me and I have to find a gr86 to test drive. Thank you again!
@@jamesmedina2062 Left my 15 STI and went back to a Supra (Made the mistake of buying a 2.0 first). STI is fun and has a raw feeling but when going to modify it gets expensive. Way more expensive then pulling power out of the Supra. Of course, the Supra has a higher price tag MSRP vs MSRP but it responds better to mods. The STI also just felt like a cheap drive when comparing interior as expected. The Supra is a bit more fun to throw around corners and mess around a bit on the highway but the STI just felt great to drive. Better steering feedback and of course the manual. The STI was a bit more practical if you live in an area that sees regular snow due to AWD and has four seats but if you dont regularly have many passengers then four seats is negligible. The trunk opening on the STI was small so getting large items in could be a pain. The Supra can fit a decent amount of items in the the rear hatch but less over all than the STi. You can't go wrong with either car in the end but I'd take my Supra over my old STI any day.

I've been clamouring for a supra for a while. I was close to saving up for one but life happened and I have to use some of that money for moving and finding a new home now. I hope to get back on track at some point because this is one of my dream cars. The viper is second but only because it's damn expensive and much more of a pipe dream than an actual goal...
I had the 1st gen, loved it but that torque dip really killed the car because it would happen making left turns at intersections, like come on lol. Nice! Yeah I have a wrx and went to test drive a brz a few years back... Couldn't stand the dip. The new model looks like it checks all the right boxes finally, but now there's the Z and Supra to consider 🤔 Loving the sudden choice of MT cars to choose from!

I've owned a 13 FRS and now own a 22 GR86. I've test driven the new A90 Supra on multiple occasions and have driven friends' Supras. I still prefer the GR86. It's more fun to drive imo. Power output is actually decent now compared to the last gen, your butt dyno definitely feels the difference. Visibility in the Supra is not as good as the 86. The Supra is still a good car nonetheless.
Considered both and don’t regret getting 86 premium halo a week ago. Supra was amazing and I had a very difficult decision. Had both been available on day I picked up 86, I’m not sure which I would a bought.
Glad you enjoyed it. I absolutely love my GR86 and I drive the crap out of it. I have an aggressive maintenance cycle, and I've had no issues with it over 2 years and 36+ track days.
Love both of these "Toyotas"! LT was a great choice for this review. In the canyons, I generally prefer lower limits and lighter weight, so I'd take the 86. There's something about driving a slow car fast that's more rewarding to me. On the track, power is definitely addictive (some of my favorite cars have been 350-450 whp rwd) so I'm guessing I'd prefer the Supra. But really can't go wrong either way, both will be fun in any sporty driving.
My take is - driving a slow car fast is fun when you're alone on the road, but when there's people around you (on track, commuting) the important thing is to "smoke 'em" 😂
@@emissarygw2264 Toyota GR86 is just better and if you think with 30k of money difference you can smoke the Zupra anytime just add a Turbo kit pro tunning is more fun because you build the car by yourself and Is way more reliable than BMW no matter the fanboys say and if you put a turbo in the GR86 with proper tunning you can run in low 12's and smoke any Supra all day long ... @@manueldelcaribe I mean, I like the gr86 and all, but how is that not equally "Toyota only in the badge" 🤔 Also, I doubt after 15k worth of mods it would be "reliable" anymore. Pretty sure nobody ever trusts a modded car when buying used.
I definitely agree to disagree about what you said about the supra when managing the car, but also remember too little T is a very tight road for that high horsepower car. You would definitely have way more fun taking that car up ACH where the road is fast and wide.
Picked up my new GTS GR 86 just recently. One big let down was no satellite navigation. Apple car play is great but listen Toyota engineers…..phone maps don’t work when out of mobile range which is very frequent where I drive in Australia. I had sat nav in my previous 2017 86 so very disappointed that this one very handy feature was left off the list in the upgrade. Also no spare wheel.
My friend owns a Scion FR-S the car itself is too small for me, but I will say as a passenger the car is awesome. He already put in a turbo and E85 little thing is pretty quick, sounds like a jet taking off.
i used to have a '97 NA miata and recently upgraded to a '21 supra 3.0 premium supra is a ton of fun in the canyons but i still miss myself banging through the gears in my miata with the top down...i'm lowkey thinking about going back to a Miata (although probably an ND bc it would also be my daily) because it's really hard to justify the price of the surpa when I can't even use all that extra power most of the time 😅 really the only place I can have a lot of fun in the supra on public roads is long, winding canyon roads like angeles crest. but the miata was fun to drive literally anywhere!
You should've kept the Miata AND added the 3.0 Supra. That's what I did. My NC miata has a manual and the Supra, an auto. My wife has a Lexus SUV, so no worries!
I think 255 and 245 tires would be more than capable for your canyons. The lightness will really be apparent. The road feel with shorter sidewall will increase feel. I feel it when I take 10 lbs off each corner on my Honda. Lots of things improve. Remember that cars that had 295 like the Pantera and Countach(?) had a shorter wheel so they were not too heavy. Great review btw. I enjoyed it.
The road feel with shorter sidewall (than factory) will increase feel but make the car slower overall. Not sure if that's worth it, unless you like the look of a skin rubber instead of a proper tire, but even then.
@@afoxwithahat7846 I suggested a 255 in the back. I didn't mention the rest but say if its 40 series how would this be slower? Acceleration is quicker with a shorter and a lighter tire. Faster accel to 100 mph.
The buggiest issue with the new gen twins is the fake speaker engine noise. I disabled that but now it’s sooo quiet. Even with an after market exhaust. It’s too quiet in the cabin.
@@revmatchtv I ended up going with the MRT sport touring exhaust, which was reviewed on the Tophers channel. Exhaust is quiet and 0 drone, very very chill probably the chillest exhaust. But I might be adding a mid pipe later to get some noise in the cabin. You only hear the exhaust at low rpm but while driving at higher speeds it’s almost non existent. It’s not an exhaust issue it’s a BRZ/86 issue since there is no sound tube. But I recommend this exhaust if you want quiet. 9/10
Good vid. I have a slightly modified ND Miata that is a blast in the canyons, and there are some great twisties near me. I'm so wanting to pull the trigger on a new Supra, but I'm worried that I'm going to pay that "double the price" and not even find the car as fun to drive. "Can get yourself into trouble" in the Supra also comes to mind. Can drive the crap out the Miata and not have to worry about it so much. Doubt they'd let me take one on a 2 hour test drive.

BMW and Subaru makes two great sports cars for Toyota to put their name on. The BRZ / GR86 is the better car for driving on US roads regardless of price. More than enough power and excellent handling for any road I have access to.

Track bRED is the name. I waited a long time to get a color that wasn't white, black, grey or silver. I wanted Netpute blue, but I couldn't find one in the spec I wanted.
My friend who is 6'2" has driven it with no problem. There's more cabin space than a Miata. The interior dimensions are very similar to the first gen, so see if you can find one to sit in.
I think it's buried in a recent video somewhere. I'll do a dedicated one in the future. Basically, call a bunch of dealers, out of your area. Find one that will sell you one at MSRP and be prepared to wait for up to a year.
Great videography BTW Since you drove all 3 GR Corollas & Supra & GR 86 If availability was equal and the price for "one vehicle" no object - which one of the above you would get for track days For a bit more fun - under the same restrictions which one would you get for a canyon carver/daily driver/no kids???

Bro thank you for taking the time to make this video, I found the information very helpful. At this point I'm leaning heavily towards getting a gr86 as it would be my weekend fun car as opposed to a daily. I'll probably wait till the rv issue has been resolved , how has reliability been on the supra as an owner , I remember hearing about oil consumption issues in the beginning of the life cycle of the supra.
I think the RTV issue is a bit overblown imho. There have only been 2 cars that had an issue and Toyota warrantied those. There are over 12,000 of these on the road now. I may pay the dealer to drop the pan in a few thousand miles, but idk honestly. My Supra has been dead reliable. The only issue I've had is the subwoofer buzzes sometimes. The engine has been stout and it's tuned to 500whp.
@@revmatchtv completely agree. I have a 2022 gr86. Don’t care about rtv issue. It’s under warranty for 3 yrs. After the warranty ends, extend it. Waiting is stupid. No power or heated seats. No different modes for driving. Although the hill assist was stupid. Gr86 is a great daily. With snow tires, it’s even better.
great comparo vid! how did you get your gr86 for msrp? i can’t seem to find your other video that explains it. i’m looking into buying either a gr86 or ‘23 manual supra.
Thanks for this review. I'm digging the squared setup for the Supra. I've owned a 350Z for 15+ years and have always thought about doing that. If given the choice between the two to buy, I'd probably buy the GR86. It looks perfect in track bred and reminds me of the red the Mitsubishi 3000 had in the early 90's. Cheers!
I’m very much of the Colin Chapman philosophy. I love a tossable light car and you can grow with that car. It rewards top tier driving more where the supra has lots of power but threading apex’s it matters less. At the end of the day they both deliver plenty of smile.
The sound of the in-line 6 on the Supra is fantastic and the power it generates is border line ridiculous in the best way. It is a bit heavy though. The GR86 on the other hand is playful because of it being lightweight. Unfortunately the RTV issue is out of control and both Toyota and Subaru are not taking accountability.
@@revmatchtv Not bad but your gr86 shaves about 500 lbs off that and that’s what makes it feel alive in the corners in my opinion. Of course the Supra is much faster and I love that for 23 it gets a manual.
@@ericschugemporium973 Not true at all, more and more cars are having issues and multiple people have dropped the oil pan, cleaned the oil pickup tube to only find it full again 5,000 miles later. Unfortunately Toyota seems content pointing the finger at Subaru.
Haven't had an accident driving racing the gt86 for the last 10 years. I'm not sure I'll be able to say the same with the GR86 in 10 years time with the more powerful engine.
Of course for the canyons the lightweight vehicle always wins the choice. Extra power with extra leather and padding and extra Weight is not what I’m after. LIGHTWEIGHT is what makes sports cars great. Formula is simple Lotus knew this decades ago. I don’t understand why people keep forgetting this.
It would have been easy to put an acceptable amount of power in the 86 and have kept everything else about it without sacrificing anything that makes it good. It’s painfully slow and I’m amazed how many reviewers drool over it. Lotus knew to put decent engines in which is the difference. Just my opinion.
Hey revematchtv, I've been meaning to ask, Is there a reason you don't have your apr wing on the supra? Is there something wrong with it? The reason I ask is because I am in the market for one and want to know if there is something wrong with it.
I have it off because it’s fairly heavy and the hatch barely stays up with it on. If I’m at the store, I need to hold up the hatch when loading groceries. If there’s a little gust of wind, it goes down hard. The APR products are very high quality imho and provide a LOT of downforce. I’d recommend the GTC 250 for the Supra because unless you get the front splitter too, the car will understeer quite a lot on track. If it’s just for looks, the GTC 300 I have fits the bill!
I just bought a GR86, and it's the best car I've ever had. I will forever be spoiled by it, and now all other cars I get will be held to the impossible standards that it sets. Maybe after it's paid off, I'll trade it in for a used Supra. But it might make more sense just to add a little more power to the 86.
@gamerdaddy2570 2,000 miles no issues. If there are issues, the 7 year/ 100,000 mile warranty covers it. I think that any issues that come up like this are overblown by people on the internet repeating it a lot. It's a much more rare thing than you would think after listening to everyone.

Anyhow, hearing 2020+ owners of either of the twins…talking so shitty about the “First Generation”…drives me nuts 😂 RESPECT your ELDERS.
I thought this was gonna be a Supra 2.0 vs GR86 video... Anyway, I disagree that the GR86 is enough and a huge improvement over the GT86. For this specific output and this car's weight, it needs an extra cylinder to be perfect. Car+driver wet weight (assuming 180-pound driver) should be equal to the CC displacement N/A for an entry-level sports car. Additionally, the engine architecture should be able to handle (with forged rods and lower-comp forged pistons) roughly doubling the N/A power, with an off-the-shelf forged crank, head stud upgrade, and braced block(if factory open deck) allowing support for triple the NA power. The engine's stoke (really any modern engine's stroke length) should be fixed at either 90mm or 100mm depending on the torque to HP ratio desired. The max safe street RPM is about 8000 on the shorter of those two, and about 7200rpm proportionally (same piston speed), for the 100mm stroke. So you could build and then push the 90mm stroke up to 9000rpm for a circuit RACING build, and the equivalent on that for piston speed of the 100mm stroke would be 8100rpm. Hence picking your poison between torque and HP/revs. But nowadays with modern head and cam design (and variable valvetrains), we can get engines to have a very balanced powerband and rev out to 8000, regardless, so. **shrug**
@@revmatchtv I mean, just take the supra and lengthen it so it has REAL back seats, convert the ZF8 into a transaxle and put it in the rear, and raise the rear passenger roof line so that it fits people over 5'7; like a Scion tC. Great job! I watched the whole thing. I have a GR86, I also want a Supra. Never Ends!
@@jamesmedina2062 500+ lbs is a LOT. Very noticeable.
@@jamesmedina2062 they don’t feel heavy at all… my 135 hatch was wild on tight mountain passes
Dynamically, my opinion is the GR86 is the superior car for driving enjoyment.
Thank you again!
but STI practical too no? What were any complaints?
@@jamesmedina2062 no such thing as a 4 door sports car.
@@supralyfe1206 for a primary car for an outdoors person who also wants something fun to drive, wrx/sti are hard to beat (I'm driving WRX). @@emissarygw2264You will find that the rarity of GR Supras make a big difference in the attention and respect you get. I see my 2024 Supra 45th Anniv. as almost like an exotic car.

Supra is Toyota only in the badge LoL 😂
@@manueldelcaribe wow hot take, you heard it here first guys
@@emissarygw2264 Toyota GR86 is just better and if you think with 30k of money difference you can smoke the Zupra anytime just add a Turbo kit pro tunning is more fun because you build the car by yourself and Is way more reliable than BMW no matter the fanboys say and if you put a turbo in the GR86 with proper tunning you can run in low 12's and smoke any Supra all day long ... Supercharger still fun and run in Highs 13 and you don't need to spend 30 k with 15 k mods is enough to destroy any GR Supra just saying 😂

My friend owns a Scion FR-S the car itself is too small for me, but I will say as a passenger the car is awesome. He already put in a turbo and E85 little thing is pretty quick, sounds like a jet taking off.
Sadly, it's not a Supra....
i used to have a '97 NA miata and recently upgraded to a '21 supra 3.0 premium
supra is a ton of fun in the canyons but i still miss myself banging through the gears in my miata with the top down...i'm lowkey thinking about going back to a Miata (although probably an ND bc it would also be my daily) because it's really hard to justify the price of the surpa when I can't even use all that extra power most of the time 😅
really the only place I can have a lot of fun in the supra on public roads is long, winding canyon roads like angeles crest. but the miata was fun to drive literally anywhere!

OEM tire size is 255/275. I have 295s on for track duty.
I own GR86 and like everything about it including the price but Supra is a lot easier to daily because it’s less raw and more insulated.
The buggiest issue with the new gen twins is the fake speaker engine noise. I disabled that but now it’s sooo quiet. Even with an after market exhaust. It’s too quiet in the cabin.
Which exhaust did you go with? It’s too quiet, but I also don’t want to wake up my neighbors with an angry cold start.

Drive the crap out of the Supra and you better be on your toes. Wish there was a way I could take a Supra through the canyons before I make the choice. Doubt they'd let me take one on a 2 hour test drive.

compare the 2.0 supra to gr86 that would be more fair
Of course for the canyons the lightweight vehicle always wins the choice. Extra power with extra leather and padding and extra Weight is not what I’m after. LIGHTWEIGHT is what makes sports cars great. Formula is simple Lotus knew this decades ago. I don’t understand why people keep forgetting this.
Because social media wants POWER

**shrug**
You want all this in a $29K car? Let me know when you find it. I'll be first in line!
@@revmatchtv I mean, just take the supra and lengthen it so it has REAL back seats, convert the ZF8 into a transaxle and put it in the rear, and raise the rear passenger roof line so that it fits people over 5'7; like a Scion tC. (Legit, just slap the tC roofline on anything and have similar rear leg, shoulder, and hip room and you have the perfect 2+2 car)
I'm pretty sure they can do that for around 42k as long as you're taking the turbo 4-cyl version and not a turbo 6-cyl version. Though TBH, a turbo 5-cyl and a N/A 8-cyl being the two main options, perhaps with a turbo 3-cyl hybrid as the base model would be pretty sick. Also, mandatory double wishbone, SLA, or true multilink front suspension. I ain't buggin' with any Macpherson BS.
The only reason I wouldn't buy the Supra is my past experience with BMW being maintenance nightmares.
Mine has been fine. Think BMW with Toyota QC. I’ve had my share of old, terrible BMWs!
Look like a pretty good driver
Finally the comparison I was waiting for. I couldn't decide which one I wanted. I know they aren't the same cars but wanted to see which would be the better daily
Supra with the auto is better in the city but a bit less practical.
too poor to afford either of these...
atm these are the prices:
2023 brz is between 40k-48k eur (which is 43k-52k usd)
2023 gr86 from 40k to 72k eur (43k-78k usd)
also, the 2023 supra (3L, not the 2L one) is 63k-80k eur (68k-87k usd)
Pricey indeed
@@revmatchtv now im thinking of either getting a
1) 2013 93k km GT86 for 17k
2) 2013 110k km GT86 for 21k, but it has completely new engine (under 1k km), cuz the old one got blown up cuz of oil starvation
I was lucky to get my 3.0 Supra for 55k eur
Now I see the prices go as high as 73k euro
Lets be honest, the 86 looks way more like a Supra than the Supra
I have a 2022 GR86... the car is.. just alright
I would get a GR86 if it wasn't so underpowered. It's so slow
It's not imho. Unless you want to do freeway pulls. Then it's absolutely the wrong car.
GR86 all day over the BMW rebadge
well yeah, cuz its gonna need ‘all day’ to finally get up to a decent speed and match traffic
Rather a Elantra n more refined just as fun if not more fun and cheaper
Its FWD which is not my jam, but it’s rather popular on my channel right now 😉
Could never choose an automatic transmission over manual, never. 👎
I own both ;)
I’ve owned 2 Supras and a GR86. The GR86 is more fun
Hey that's little t I know this road well
BMW Z4 vs 86 GR
Just buy a 2023 BRZ and throw in a super charger and you have a better supra for far less the cost that's far more reliable. . . FYI, most Toyotas today are built by Subaru anyway.
They are not tunable yet, but I expect there to be tunes as early as 2023. Most Toyotas are built by Toyota. Only the BRZ is built by Subaru.
My $3000 suv is about as fast as the 1st gen brz
Gr86 looks better
