    Did the Dealership bleed the brakes? The only thing i can think of is air in the system. Maybe that's too simple of a fix but it's what makes the most sense to me. It's either that or something mechanical between the pedal and the Master Cylinder.

      Thanks Daniel. I think I might try to bleed the brakes myself as a possible solution. Worth a try.

      Graham Lancaster your brakes might be getting too hot. might need to add more ventilation somehow.

      Thanks for the tip. It actually happens more when I first start up the car, especially first drive of the day. The brakes are at their coldest then. I just bought a vacuum bleeder so will try that. I will try to make a video to test the results.

      This is actually a common problem among many entry level cars. I had the same problem on my 08 yaris, and the 2013 kia rio I have now.

    Brakes should not be lightly ridden while stopping. Light pressure wears out the pads quickly and causes your problem. Firm pressure when breaking heats up the rotors quickly and allows the system to warm up and function properly from then on as both the pads and rotors are breaking the car equally. Nothing is wrong w your brakes. I hope this helps. Good luck G.

    • @omegalamda3145
      @omegalamda3145 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soft pressure on brakes is akin to holding a drill motor lightly while trying to create heat and drill a hole in wooden. It's cause the system to become unstable. Peace

    I’ve noticed that I bet it is something with the Honda sensing as it is getting the brake ready to brake if you don’t , try to deactivate the braking adoption system and see if it works .

  • @BillDeanCycle

    My guess is those brakes are brake by wire not traditional. My wife's Rx330 has the exact same problem. Every mechanic I try to explain this to looks at me like I'm nuts. I completely understand your wanting to fix it. I don't know if it's possible to do so. Computers and brakes are my least favorite combo for this very reason.

    • @grahamlancaster9587
      @grahamlancaster9587  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bill. The problem was actually air in the brake lines. I bled the brakes and that fixed it. Thank goodness it is not brake by wire, I hate those setups.

  • @nicktune1219
    @nicktune1219 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is probably a brake fluid problem, or a master cylinder. Try bleeding the system, if that doesn't work, have the master cylinder checked. You also might want to check the connection from the brake pedal to the braking system.

    • @grahamlancaster9587
      @grahamlancaster9587  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Nick! Air in the system sounds like a possible problem, so I intend to get on it and bleed the brakes with a vacuum bleeder.

    I have a 2017 1.8 ivtec civic, i think your problem is with your brake servo. You may have a small leak in the vacuum pipe. Or the master cylinder piston is sicking , even a damaged internal seal. The usual fault for top end brake fade
    is a air bubble. Hope this helps.

  • @petercronin6146
    @petercronin6146 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think you should spend a lot of time on Brake Fluid Flushes etc. Your Civic has Electronic Brake Assist which will give you even more braking power than you ask for in an emergency stop Electronic Brake Distribution which redistributes brake pressure based on load front to rear, Electronic Anti-Lock Brakes - pulses brakes in a panic to give you steering control, Vehicle Stability Assist which uses electronic braking to keep the car on the intended path based on steering angle, CMBS which will apply the brakes based on impending collision, Low Speed follow which will stop the car without any braking when the Cruise Control is engaged and the vehicle you are following stops, etc. You should have a Honda Factory District Service Manager and maybe even a Field Engineer drive your vehicle and you drive some other new ones off the lot together as well. I think you will find it may be a "characteristic" of the vehicle based on all of the electronics. If Honda finds it to be out of character., a simple re-flash of the Control Unit may solve it. If it is typical across the sample of new CIVICS you can drive, it will be a much tougher hill to climb...
    To co-opt your amplifier analogy. Think of all of these systems creating more resistance along the way than you are used to. It will require more power to overcome the additional resistance, thereby delaying any sound( braking) until you reach enough power to "push through it". Make sense?

    • @grahamlancaster9587
      @grahamlancaster9587  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter. Thanks for the advice and the insight.
      My real concern isn't a lack of braking in an emergency, it is the smoothness of the brakes during light braking, in that there is an absence of braking pressure in the 1-5% braking application.
      This is definitely a new thing, as it has only started driving like this in the past 2 weeks or so. I had a couple of techs drive the car, but they weren't able to really sense it. That kind of thing can make you feel crazy, but I am pretty sure of what I am sensing in this car.
      As for the actual problem and solution, I like a lot of the suggestions that there may be air in the system, as I am compressing the air during a light touch of the brake pedal. It is not the problem for sure, but it is possible, and a quick bleed with a vacuum bleeder might just do the trick. If not, then onto the next possibility.
      I will keep this up to date as I try new things, and maybe even a follow up video.
      Thanks again for contributing. I really appreciate your insight.

    I recently had to fix my brakes on my 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport. The back passenger wheel break pads completely wore out. I was riding in on all metal and caused my rotor to warp. There was no signs or any damage but dealer said my other back wheel was seeing the same issue. I wasn’t able to tell since the inner pads were wearing out first. Told me air and contamination occurred in the brake fluid.

    I've had two civics, a 8th gen ex and a 10th gen civic sport manual. both had/have this break pedal sensation. I'm certified as an automotive technician but currently have little professional experience. but I do most of the work on my own cars. but both civics did this thing where there was maybe an inch or so of brake pedal float where not much happened in terms of slowing the car down. after that inch the brake pedals applied normally. turns out that's just brake pads wearing in. as the pads wear down there's an increase in distance between the friction surfaces of the pad and the rotor, in turn that would give the inch or so of "float" to the brake pedal. if you want your pads to feel new all the time just change your pads more often but from what I heard on this video it sounds to me like normal operation.

    Did you ever get this fixed? I hope so , however, I quickly scanned through the comments but did not see any mention of the auto-brake system. My 2017 Si does the opposite. Instead of not grabbing the brakes, the auto brake kicks on too early. So needless to say it is impossible to do a rolling stop because my brake system kicks on any where under 3mph. Maybe the system needs to be recalibrated. Hope this helps.

    Sound like you need to bleed the fluid there is air stuck in it re grease the calliper springs and put everything back together and see what happens.
    Usually air in the hydraulic system will compress before transferring the energy to the calliper so you get a pause before it engages

    I have noise coming from the rear end of my 2016 Honda (bought new) currently with 13,000 miles on the car. I took it to the dealer's service department. I still have the problem. They said the Firestone tires that came on it on it causes the noise and they are not covered by a warranty, not even the one I paid $1500 for. I'm going to try some Michelin Primacy MXM4 All-Season Highway Tire 215/55R16/XL 97H from walmart. If it doesn't fix the noise problem I'll take it to the dealer's service department again.

    With a electronic calipers in the rear and you use it all the time considering its a standard trans. The main problem is that the rear caliper pistons are retracting too far back when the parking brake is released. Its not a bleeding problem cause the pedal is firm and not spongy right?

    In a maual you shouldn´t "rest" your foot on the brake pedal. You let the motor do the "braking" in such situations, and use the brakes when you really need to brake. Of course it sould be possible to break in different degrees, light or hevy, but I never rest my foot on the breaking pedal when driven "in case of". I have been driving mauals for over 30 years now.

      Hi Mohamed. My brakes do get slightly better after a few minutes of driving. A lot of people think that there may be air in my brake system and bleeding the brakes might solve it. This explanation does make sense, as when I first hit the brakes I would be compressing the air bubbles until the hydraulic pressure built up and then the brakes activate.
      I will try to bleed them soon and probably make a follow up video with the results.

    99% of drivers wouldn’t even notice this. When people over describe a problem, they’re usually talking bollox.

      Thanks Alexander. I am hearing about this quite a bit since I posted this video. It seems to be a common issue. Hopefully this will be addressed by Honda

      Yes agreed - I'm starting to notice a small vibration when applying about 15% breaking power on the front breaks. Defiantly going to take it in for servicing.

    Your driving style is wrong. Should not rest your foot on the brake pedal if not trying to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle.

    "Honda's direct-injected 1.5L turbo 4-cyl. Earth Dreams engine is creating a nightmare for the company as it tries to resolve a severe gasoline oil-dilution problem it says is caused by cold-weather operation." (Ward's Auto, March 2019) Reliability for Honda's 1.5 Turbo Earth Dreams has been sketchy, at best. China's government even implemented a forced stop-sale of this engine in the CR-V due to so many problems. Impressive engine? I don't think so. Honda's poorly-engineered piston ring design will more than likely compromise long-term longevity. Don't bother asking any service personnel at a US Honda dealership: You will likely get the proverbial runaround, a mishmash of half-truths and denial...

    is it "by wire" braking?

    • @grahamlancaster9587
      @grahamlancaster9587  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, the brake lever pushes the piston in the master cylinder with power assist (I think). From 5% of brake pressure on it works normal. The pedal feel to brake pressure ratio is wacky for the first 5% of brake pedal movement.
