in my opinion, as I have been down the premium brand road, then after I bought my second Steeldive which was the sd1953 smurf. I then sold the big-brand dive watches because I realized it was too much money as appose to trying to impress others I only needed to tell the time and for me at least impress myself I liked the watch.SD1953 off which from then on was the philosophy of my future watch collection.

Agreed, if I like the look of a watch, having to wait years and devote months of work to own it is a pain in the bum. Much nicer to order it on line for less than a days wages and receive it within a week. Same look, similar performance, no worries.❤

@@TheWatchChannelAU I find a Rolex Sub date of 10,700 new at the dealer. a major theft, how crazy are you if you buy this. a SteelDive or San Martin costs 300. I bought 3 of the Steeldive, love the look, Seiko movement, feel and lume! Of course anyone who bought one wants a Rolex but, when it comes to price (retail and otherwise )and wait is a challenge.. thank for the deep dive of the iconic Rolex Submariner , just makes me appreciate my Steeldives even more. I don’t want a Rolex I personally believe Swiss watches are overrated especially Rolex, you pay so much just for a brand you can get cheaper watches with way better specs, one can argue that they polish their movements to high standard but who is opening their watch to show their movements? It’s a waste of money and if I had all the money in the world I’ll still not buy a Rolex.

I ordered my Steeldive green bezel/black face (I guess they call them Kermits) on Sept 2 from Ali Express. It is now the 7th and it is being delivered today. That is an amazing delivery time from Asia. I have the Captain Williard as well and it was keeping nearly perfect time. Dropped it on the bathroom's hard tile floor and now it's running 80 seconds fast a day. I can live with that because when I wind it I can just adjust the time. It's actually far better than what Rolex was in the 50's - 70's. Rolex of that era now let me see... hollow end links, aluminium bezel inserts, plexiglass, rattly bracelets, and they often leaked (various Military forces ditched them due to failure rates). Rolex is a case of "stick a crown logo on your dial and crown and fake it till you make it". Thankfully for Rolex they had iconic designs, and were able to improve quality iteratively that by the 2000's they actually started to get decent.

I've never owned a Rolex but I have no desire to spend that much on a watch. I'd never want to wear it for fear of damage or theft. I do like the look of the Sub though. Hence, my SD1953 has been my daily wearer for 6 months now. It keeps good time @ +2s/day. A number of people have complimented me on it. I've even had Rolex wearers strike up a conversation thinking I was a fellow owner - I soon put that straight.. 😇
One thing I have learned is that macro views of watches in reviews have little bearing on seeing them in person/on wrist. None of those minutae are even visible to the naked eye. Furthermore, the only people who typically comment on watches are watch nerds - the rest of the world couldn't care less.
Bottom line? Buy what you like and what makes you happy. However, the reality is that the SD1953 is everybit as good as the Rolex, most of the time (no pun intended..). If having a status symbol on your arm is important to you then nothing but the genuine item will do. For everyone else, forget about your kids inheriting your Rolex. Invest the money wisely for 20-30 years instead and give them a pot of cash to do as they please. You could buy 10x SD1953s for the price of a Rolex service...

I’ve got the Steeldive GMT Coke. I’m seriously impressed with it. Fairly accurately tells the time, 300m water resistance, and looks like the real thing from even quite close up. Best of all I get a ceramic Coke which Rolex have refused to make. Downsides are the lume on the hands is weak, it’s quite heavy, some of the edges are a bit sharp, and the cyclops is over-magnified. But overall I love it. It’s Bling Without The Sting!

I think most people who can afford a Rolex are smart enough (maybe) to understand that a Rolex is not 125 times better than a Chinese Homage. But that’s not why they buy them. They buy them because they can. And honestly if I was in their shoes, I’m not sure I would do anything differently. Thanks for the great comparison! When you have money to burn, you burn money. Also the more expensive they are, the more attractive they are to the super rich. That's called a "veblen good", where the standard rules of supply and demand don't apply. What's sad is where lower income people foolishly play the game and give up their hard-earned for a Rolex and get in over their heads. If you have a Rolex - seriously no one cares.

I can't afford a 2010+ Rolex Submariner yet, still in my 20's, and also currently saving for a Cartier Santos. This Addiesdive scratches the Rolex Sub itch for me and I suspect I'll still be wearing it and the automatic Steeldive 1953 when I finally obtain a Rolex Sub. Blue Collar worker in the trades where abuse is bound to happen to a watch so these nice Chinese Homage/Microbrands make much more sense than a Rolex. From a value perspective, durability/scratch resistance, and potential theft the Addiesdive checks all the right boxes for me. Oh and the lume is phenomenal, better than most $200+ dive watches from Swiss/Japanese brands.

I have been saving for decades to get a submariner, and then I got tired of trying to build the bank up for the Rolly. Just recently, I started looking elsewhere 😮. And low and behold, I looked at the SD. OMG !!!! So now I can get some really well-made watches. I ordered my first SD1953 green bezel. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!! A big thanks to all the inexpensive watch reviewers. I've had a complete mind change away from all the ultra's, I've found really great watches------mostly 😢 stay away from sturling, chrome watch bodys insted of ss, just 💩💩💩

FWIW, the NH 35 can be serviced. It just costs too much. However, if done, they can be substantially improved. It seems the Seiko skimps on lubrication and adjustment on the NH 35s so as not to give their more expensive movements too much competition.

I recently bought a Steeldive 1953 in blue. I am very pleased with the watch. I own gen Omega, Rolex and Cartier along with Dan Henry, Seiko, and Orient watches. The Steeldive is amazingly close in overall quality to the genuine. It did have a fairly stiff bezel but it loosened up in use. The clasp is now milled and it has 6 micro adjusts. The SD 1953 is probably 95% there. The only issue now is the cyclops which is over magnified. I think the reason is the crystal is higher than the dial then in the genuine. The rehaut is also thicker.

A little late, but with the NH35 movement, you could probably switch out the dial as well with some custom ones online and you still have a nice case. Same with the movement being replaced, as mentioned in the video. Even though I don’t necessarily need the lume, I do like how the Steeldive did it on the bezel as well. Great video and comparison!

I love watches, but I gotta be honest........I cannot justify spending thousands of $$$$ on 1 watch and I make a damn good income in the 6 figure territory. The premiums on Rolex are just insane, fast forward to today and the luxury watch market is tanking, the free for all spending since the covid years are over and reality is setting in for those that blew all their money. So I will buy homage watches as long as it is a quality watch, bought a San Martin & Watchdives models and I'm completely satisfied. So now that I know about Steeldives, I might pick up one to see if I like it.

I always remember browsing for guitars back in the 80s. I was trying all the guitars I drooled over. Things like American Strats, Gibsons SGs and Les Pauls,. then I picked up a Japanese Washburn for a fraction of the price. I couldn't believe how much better it felt and sounded. Despite being better in every way than the American icons I told myself I was just imagining it. How could a cheap Japanese Washburn be better than the mighty Fenders and Gibsons that all the iconic rockers played? I couldn't afford the Fenders or Gibsons but I could have stretched to the Washburn but I didn't buy it because I was in denial. Fast-forward 40 years and I now know the Japanese guitars back then were far better than the American stuff but at the time I was blinded by branding and marketing. I learnt a valuable lesson.

The Rolex is a wonderful watch and if it cost an appropriate $1250 USD it would be a bargain... But luxury watches are not priced according to what it cost to build but by what 'luxury' demands. So any homage will present better bang for buck. It is amazing what the Chinese can offer at those prices even if they lack any original designs to save their lives. If they threw a miyota 8300 movement with a better power reserve than the NH35 it would be even better!

  • @1SaG
    @1SaG 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

IMO, Rolex have really overdone it with their move towards "luxury". I know it's working for them financially, but after having worn a friend's shoddily maintained 5-digit no-date the other day (not one service in nearly 30 years of ownership ... yikes!), I'd rather own a well-maintained or mildly refurbished one of those. It's much less flashy and noticeable on your wrist, it doesn't look as chunky as the more modern iterations of the watch and it was, actually, somewhat affordable when it was new. I'd almost call it "discreet" compared to the more modern versions - both in its looks and in the way it sits on your wrist.
All that said: The difference in finishing and attention to detail really shows at this level of magnification - the hands and the printing on the dial look so much nicer on the Rolex. Does it really matter though considering the difference in price? I don't think so - but I would be lying if I didn't admit that, of course, I'd rather be wearing a genuine Rolex than a Chinese or even Swiss homage.

I've got three Steeldives. SD1979 is a Squale Atmos 50 homage. Ships on wrong strap but fit a tropic and it looks pukka. Wears well but AR coating is an issue on domed crystal that reduces legibility. Got a SD1953 that I got lucky with the NH35 and is very accurate like COSC level +4 sec/day on Water Accuracy Meter. Wears great but everyone knows what a Submariner Date is and knows its unlikely to be a real one unless you are also looking the part and driving the part looking like a highly paid footballer suited and booted and driving a luxury car. You will look a bit of a knob wearing it to the pub in just jeans and polo shirt. So I got a SD1934T that I like the legibility and wearibility of and not many will know about the Explorer its a homage of. All good. Mainly. Wears well. Reads at glance. But the NH35 in it is nowhere near as accurate as the NH35 in my SD1953. I reckon maybe +20 sec/day. I reset it daily. Accuracy is a bit crap after a quartz. Like no battery automatic but don't want to be resetting it daily. Love how Rolex wear. Won't afford one. Thinking of a Tissot Gentleman as a watch that will wear as well as a Rolex with a Swiss movement that should be regulated to be accurate. 10 times cost of Steeldive but 10 times less than cost of a Rolex. Not sure if Steeldive use TMI Indonesian or SIi Japanese NH35 movements. Variability on accuracy you get. Not worth taking it to a watchmaker to regulate an NH35 as they'd charge twice cost of a replacement NH35. Maybe buy another NH35 movements to get a watchmaker to fit it to see if you get an accurate one. If my SD1934T was as accurate as my SD1953 I'd sell my SD1953. I double wrist both and use my SD1953 as an accurate watch to reset my inaccurate SS1934T with!

Being disabled certainly crimps the budget, but even if I had a Swiss swimming pool stacked with money, I would not spend USD 20K or more on a watch. Crikey, my last 2 "already house broken" jalopies both together were less than 15K as they sit in the driveway. Here in USA, 15K is the steel/black starter model with date. They come in different trims for 20K to 40K, and then the sky is the limit, with one listed over 80K new, but you can "donate" even more to Rolex's shelter for gnarly executive personnel and their meal fund. I would instead buy that SteelDive, or just keep my 3 Invictas, and instead make a donation to our local animal shelters worth a Rolex :) We'd have some really happy dogues, and I'd still have a really nice "tool watch", which the original Rolex Subbie once was!
