Stephen Mackay Yes unfortunately ther are no BANDS like THE Stranglers nówadays. No Songs... NO energy, no lyrics, no meaning, no talent, nothin but boredom and boredom. Oh yeah and custom guitars, custom hairdos.
+Edward Riel If Prince is what you mean by progressive rock, then sure. It seems to me, like all the best innovators, she's synthesizing quite a few disparate sources.
+Mura Listy I hear a lot of Robert Fripp in her guitar phrasing...especially his dissonant chord phrasing and alternate guitar tunings...listen to the stuff he was doing with early Peter Gabriel...ie No Self Control, Intruder, and you'll see what I mean...although this song isn't the best example of her Frippishness..
+Edward Riel Well, this was the first song I'd heard by her, curious after her "Guitar Moves" interview, so my comment may have been slightly premature. I guess I meant the vocal melody and the overall tone reminded me of Prince; the arrangement not so much since it doesn't have that two-complimentary-songs-at-once vibe Prince somehow pulls off. Yes, absolutely to the Fripp-like quality now that I've heard it three times. Have also heard "Birth In Reverse" now (fabulous title) and that aspect is a lot more obvious as you suggest.
+Mura Listy It's good seeing an obvious Guitar guy being turned on to her..I searched, and she was asked what she thought about Robert Fripp, and she said something like "He's the best dressed man in rock," So she obviously knows who he is:) She also did a great collaboration with David Byrne a few years back...that's how I found about her..My son was listening to their CD and I said it sounded like Talking Heads but I couldn't place the album..and he was like, "No it's St Vincent & David Byrne!" Been a fan ever since...
What a friggin joy!!!! Art combined with great music performed very well is not dead after all. And all you haters need to just shut up!! Your just jealous that you didnt think of it first!!! LOL!!! ; ) The she did with David Byrne was very cool as well!!!
Great performance, great band, brilliant artist, love the song. Got a bit of the Bowie theatrical about her. I'd pay to go and see her, and not many artist make me feel that way.
Any one who can stand next to David Bryne and make it look like Amercan Gothic on drugs or, even better, accompany Wire and make the whole perfomance look insane, well. She's got my vote.
Don't understand all the critics on here, this is bloody brilliant! Though I realize that music as art is lost on many today as most "music" is pre-fab, non-stick wallpaper bullshit - cut up and designed to give the "5-minutes and then it's old generation" nothing to think about. This is fucking art in motion, sight and sound.
I like this song too, but she's not really saying anything to think about either (Lyrically). Nothing that she's saying sounds interesting. It's just socially concious crap. The music on the other hand is quite interesting. It combines farty synths, guitars, scrubby brass, and it sounds great!
cosmogrammar When I say "socially conscious crap" I mean that it seems like your average socially conscious song. Not really anything special. I love St. Vincent, but She is nothing of a great lyricist, and this is one of her weaker tracks as far as lyrics go. Still love this song though.
Is it just me.....or are Annie's eyed thoroughly bloodshot? She's just too cool and talented....and of course she smokes weed while writing/playing music. She's miles beyond what most musicians could ever fathom.
I feel like she is a newer female Prince-type artist. Very original, nice guitar work, a little out there. I feel like these guys should get together with Manchester By Proxy and it would be INCREDIBLE!
I'm more of a shred type of guitarist ( Joe Satriani, Steve Yai, Yngwie, etc. . . ). But I love what St. Vincent is doing. It's funky in it's own right. And Anne has a very " fresh breath " style musicianship approach. It's going to be cool to see how she and the band develop over time.
Took me awhile to "get" St. Vincent. As a guitarist myself, I was perplexed at the overprocessed, dissonant sounding guitar, but I don't knock it. It's the right kind of quirky, new wave, prog rock, all kinds of good madness in one tune. This song has really grown on me.
The Beatles were always asking Geoff Emerick to make their guitars not sound like guitars. Annie Clark does the same thing, but she has way more tools at her disposal. I think she's brilliant. Not to mention, she is an expert at vocally harmonizing with her guitar. You've gotta be a pretty solid singer to do that.
Her eyes look darker than they really are. Must be the lighting. Anyway, I had never heard her music before, but I really like this. It sort of sounds throwback to Prince / David Byrne / etc, but I'd like to hear more stuff like this today.
I never thought the word "yah" could sound that good.
2Chainz can :P
+pearljammer13 needs a remix comprised entirely of yah's.
just keep pressing 2
yah rules ;)
blackkey1976 Sounds like heads you win, tails they lose. Probably you are delusional. Seek help.
She s like a living piece of Art in this video
Her movements are so synchronized with the music, I was entranced!!!!
+Dáfny Maria Apparently she hired a choreographer to work out moves for each song that she could do whilst singing and playing the guitar.
Reminds me a lot of the Talking Heads

St Vincent is obviously highly steeped in the ways of classic Progressive Rock - you can hear it in her dissonant guitar phrasing. Love it, I'm a fan.

+Edward Riel I actually think her Birth in Reverse and Gabriel's Not One of Us are good comparisons...anyway, love her guitar skills...

Very unique, with talent. Hope she keeps exploring the weird, the world needs it.
I love the little gasps she does between bars. She does that a lot on this record.
She had me at "Yahh"!
I like her transitions and how they flow back to the verses in her style of writing. And I like the bridges. It is good talented writing.
I'd pay serious $$$ to see her do a show with Bjork.
Bjork knows better than to go on tour with this disaster.
Jer TechDeath
She is not a disaster, you !

No hablen en ingles
That solo 2:10 ...
- Watched it like 11 times. *
@Shirley It is a solo. And a tasteful one at that.
@Shirley eat shit, she went to Berklee. Not everyone wants to sound like Marty Friedman, asshole.
Great performance, great band, brilliant artist, love the song. Got a bit of the Bowie theatrical about her. I'd pay to go and see her, and not many artist make me feel that way.
Thus is the type of art that our "music" industry has lost. Please let more people like this rise!
TD.Burleigh this music is shit. I want to listen to something i can enjoy and analyze. This just sucks.
AirSoftNation #WeDemBoys yeah, cuz this is indie rock not pop
I saw her on SNL, performing this song. Her and the band have a real showman flair.

Truth.

Darrion Hinton "socially conscious crap"
lol. pay a little more attention.
cosmogrammar When I say "socially conscious crap" I mean that it seems like your average socially conscious song. Not really anything special.
I love St. Vincent, but She is nothing of a great lyricist, and this is one of her weaker tracks as far as lyrics go.
Still love this song though.
Richard Cameron I love your picture. Phantom of the Paradise is a great movie.
The drummer plays his hi-hat so super chill. can't stop watching.
Yup. Solid af
Only just discovered St Vincent...holy shit...good stuff...how does she stop herself from breaking into dance up there :D
I love this song, Yaaaaaah!!!!!!!!
The reason I listen to music is for gems like this!
Is it just me.....or are Annie's eyed thoroughly bloodshot?
She's just too cool and talented....and of course she smokes weed while writing/playing music. She's miles beyond what most musicians could ever fathom.
Incredible!! Sounds so fresh!
I feel like she is a newer female Prince-type artist. Very original, nice guitar work, a little out there.
I feel like these guys should get together with Manchester By Proxy and it would be INCREDIBLE!
She's awesome. Love her guitar playing.
+Richard Albert Henderson could not agree more
i will allways respect women artists who do there own thing and play instruments so its all good😋
Wonderful song, great performance, mixing sounds like everything is underwater.
A masterpiece of a song.
St. Vincent is the coolest! Unbelievable live show!
Completely unique and original, extremely talented guitarist and unbelievably pretty, you can see the universe in her eyes, just beautiful
She looked so chill playing nirvanas lithium but she's got skillz
If I recall, she did two other songs on this episode. At the end of one of them, she was slo-mo rolling down those steps. It was very entertaining.
Love the choreography :)
Last time I saw Matt Johnson was on the Jeff Buckley live in Chicago DVD. Good to see he's still drumming and is back in the spotlight again.
trance-inducing performance.
St. Vincent and Nine Inch Nails would make a good collaboration.
+TOOLosophy that is the first thing i thought when i first heard this!!!!!!yayaya
One of the best live performances of this song. The solo at 2:10 is perfect.
This song sounds like what would the outcome if Of Montreal meshed with Talking Heads.
+Shane Milberger I thought the same thing!
+Shane Milberger I thought the same thing!
She did a pretty great collaborative album with David Byrne a few years back
No doubt one of the best musical artists of the 2000s
Saw her live years ago, and she is an amazing talent!
Love the "I want all of yaaur mind" part.
Such a strong performer...her vocal sounds distinct from the album track but just as good.
I'm more of a shred type of guitarist ( Joe Satriani, Steve Yai, Yngwie, etc. . . ). But I love what St. Vincent is doing. It's funky in it's own right. And Anne has a very " fresh breath " style musicianship approach. It's going to be cool to see how she and the band develop over time.
soooooo talented. Wow.
I can't even take her beauty and talent....it's off the scales. That being said, poor girl is jet-lagged to hell in this taping.
stunning! mesmorised by you

The girl playing the bass synth is doing really damn good
She’s amazing!
I've said it before and I'll say it again...... I love her and I want to marry her. Oh, and I love this song too :-)
Get in line buddy ;)
:-)
I wish her fantastic Prince Johnny & Birth in Reverse performances from the same episode were also up.
Too many haters. Great song but it unfortunately doesn't come off so well live. She's still fricken awesome!!
And the fact that Matt Johnson is on drums makes it even better :)
Mara Bucher Hmmm.. I thought it sounded better live. =)
damn this is awesome ST. Vincent rules
Damn, i like her!!
pretty cool that ((the edge)) plays drums for her
lolzz. Matt Johnson rules!
I kind of like this song, and I really do fancy Annie
Her eyes look darker than they really are. Must be the lighting.
Anyway, I had never heard her music before, but I really like this. It sort of sounds throwback to Prince / David Byrne / etc, but I'd like to hear more stuff like this today.
so much Prince vibe in this band is awesome!!
She is a phenomenon.
love this band, reminds me of Prince.
thank you
much better than the letterman performance!
My favorite album
80's Prince
+Khaliq Harrison- Bey i was hoping someone would say that
i love her
Tuneful, mesmerizing. Daddy like
I'm in love with that woman. For real.
Wonderful indeed
love her
This chick is crazy.
And I likes it.
She's a category on her own
I'm addicted to the solo @ 2:10-2:19, is that on the album version?
I'm getting a Prince vibe from this tune, sort of a laid-back, lo-fi "Controversy"
Cool stuff! Elements of Zappa and Bjork..
She's Boss!!
Fucking love Annie Clark she's so damn good
Love when she looks in the camera at 3:08
that jools holland - he certainly knows how to pick them
ella es realmente genial!!!
She speaks ze german: Ja!
Shoulda had Jesse singing more on the show, how am I just hearing this now!
I do like her definitely
I don't get what's so bad? I find her sound so refreshing compared to the mundane pop crap that somehow gets radio time -.-
JayGatzVFXsk8r because its seizure music. Its not good lmao
AirSoftNation #WeDemBoys Call me epileptic then because this is some fun, intensely smart shit. Listen to this any day
@@declanpayne3744 If you don't like the joltiness of this, maybe you'd like her live performance of What Me Worry with Andrew Bird
Espectacular
I want to hate it so bad but I can't... lmfao
+hworkdedication don't know why you would want to try hate a song, but okay :)
Excellent .... wish I could do better Bowie Interpretations on you tube ....so cool.
I like dark shit like this. I enjoyed it. I ate lunch at my Dead friend's grave. He will always be 15 I was 27.
Hu!
She reminds me Raissa. Nice the way she plays the guitar.
Probably... i like. Yep, i like this.
richtiiiig gut!!
Holy schnikes; I think I'm in love. LOL!
;o)
good pop music
Do you have the "Birth In Reverse" performance from Jools' show?
could someone post the Jools Holland Prince Johnny performance please?
Yeahh
just can't, compose... thoughts are mush. she is so so beyond, thoughts. i can't, comprehended neatly... um. yah?
I want to have her babies.
Really love the song, but (this is probably on the mixers part) the song wasn't for this kind of stage
