Because it is easy... To her. Just like Les Claypool playing "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver." Really, if you practice enough, it's not that big of a deal. It's like talking while walking.
Exodus I am glad that I am not the only one. I suffer from anxiety and ptsd. Some of her music is anxiety inducing for me. Here's the kicker..... Her music may trigger some anxiety but in a good way giving it a safe place to manifest and play out. If I listen to her music before going places that trigger anxiety then I am less likely to have a panic attack while I am out.
It's always a good thing to have your boundaries pushed farther back! I used to think this artist was just a lot of hype, but - this is actually BRILLIANT! Unconventional song-writing, imaginative arrangements, and really unique approach to Guitar-craft! This is ART-Music!
LOL, the whole reason why I'm currently here is that I wanted to play this in the background while working. Too bad I keep returning to the TH-cam tab to watch her loveliness...and her amazing guitar playing.
+Eduardo Roth Sure, I love doing that. I just have one question: Why have some of my lists for songs vanished? Not in this video in particular, but other ones.
the fact that she almost totally excludes traditonal pop structures but still writes the catchiest tunes around is part of what makes her music special and interesting. her first record was a little more traditional, and it was okay. but her last two records are masterpieces of art pop; simultaneously pretty, classy, distorted and austere.
when i saw her in concert last october, she was kind enough to sign my album as follows, "dear tom, i'll be with you lost boy." xo - annie. if my house ever caught fire, that album would be the first thing i would grab.
i just love annie's artistry. the way she holds her guitar like an automatic weapon of massive elation. thanks for the over-saturation of aural/visual pleasure.
I always come back to this session, at least once every 2 months or so. It's amazingly well shot, recorded and played. Everyone involved did their work perfectly.
I had never really liked Strange Mercy (well, relative to her other songs) and have probably watched this whole video 3 or 4 times before tonight. But I just watched it again, payed close attention to the lyrcis and the way she sings it, and *ugh* it's just so great.
This performance is the best I've seen in years.- absolutely great direction and camera work as well and what an amazing fat recording. Flat-out inspiring, songs with actual spirit and so many subtle yet powerful and fresh moves in the arrangements. Brilliance from all in the band. Shares a dreamlike creative playing field with Joni, Kate or Prince, but kicks it somewhere else. Moving. A real treasure.
Annie Clark... You are a purple haze storm of fingers. Soaked in Opera turpentine. So pure, you float daily between my smile. Thank you... Rock and roll...
I keep coming back to this. It's such a fascinating performance and my personal favorite sample of Annie's genius. So thankful to live in the era of youtube.
The ability to lend one's voice through a variety of styles, and retain original quality, is a rarity among today's artists. Wonderfully delicious vocals.
I am 100% smitten with this talented individual. Annie Clark aka "St. Vincent." Not only is she very easy on the eyes she destroy's the guitar. She is also on a very good label as well. Balling out of control.
Amazing, what a band, and how awesomely produced! Just wonderful how 4AD gave it to us. Annie and the band have to be one the hardest working bunch of musicians I've seen in a forever time, and the spectacle I've just beheld is nothing short of miraculous in my humble opinion. Bought me to tears. A beautiful work of art.......
she's got the craziest set up for her guitar effects. that pedal board in front of her is completely run through a MIDI controller which is plugged into the laptop that her keyboard player is sitting behind. he controls when the guitar tones change. most of these songs she has 3 or 4 changes from verse to chorus to solo.
The guitar might say David Byrne and the voice Björk.. I would question those assertions. The only thing I'm sure of the whole package is Annie Clarke and I want more. Finally some quality 21st century Pop music.
The 'dirty policeman' part of Strange Mercy has been on non-stop repeat in my head for the last week. What an incredible piece of music from an incredible artist.
So I'm a little late to the party. Just stumbled upon St. Vincent last week. So glad I did. Incredible. She's inspired me to get back into playing guitar after being in a rut for over half a decade. Fuck "shredders"; she's the most innovative musician I have come across since I got into playing music 16 years ago.
Over the years, I keep coming back to this video. My favourite incarnation of St Vincent, with Annie all insectoid jerks and siren voiced. And that guitar squall at the end of Surgeon! 🙌
My friend tried to get me into her years ago I just couldn't do it. I'm a guitar player.myself and her style rubbed me in so many wrong ways and Ive always loved obscure stuff. But I saw a video a month ago. And it bothered me still. I knew she was talented and had a style of her own but It triggers my critique and soul. So this last month I've been forcing myself to keep listening. The fact that it made me emotionally bothered intrigued my curiosity As a guitar player and musician. I'm finally getting it... Her studio albums are amazing. It's rare when I fall down a new rabbit hole like this.... She is amazing. I needed this
With some of her songs, I need a few listens to wrap my head around the styles she uses before I truly start enjoying them. That being said, I didn't have that experience with any of the songs in this set; I loved them off the bat, although admittedly, further listening made me enjoy them even more. I can understand why some people wouldn't like them and might find them too strange, but I'm not one of those people. This is delightfully different in my eyes, and catchy as hell. I can lose myself in this music.
Much respect for her input and concepts. She stands out as does her music as in ""different" meaning "not the same". The melodic values are expressive, she has my ear! Bravo!
So, so beautiful. In every possible way. I could hear everything I wanted to hear in any song ever. Visually gorgeous too. My gosh. I've rarely been so amazed.
Check out her playing Kerosene. It will only deepen your amazement. Sorry, but I can't paste in the URL here for some reason. Search Big Black and St Vincent. there are two vids. The one with Kerosene only is pretty good quality.
I love this artist, l feel lucky I got to hear who St. Vincent and the music from she, the artist. She's definetly going to get haters, but that's only because she's going to get lovers.
She's got the stuff. I grow more and more interested the more I hear. Influences.... maybe Dexter Romweber, Karlheinz Stockhausen, David Bowie, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Hoagy Carmichael, Don Preston, and Lao Tzu. These songs seem to have been discovered in the diatonic DNA of popular science primordial music soup. It makes my brain dance. I give it a 10.
This is an excellent video. Thank you. I saw St. Vincent a few weeks ago in Washington, DC. I had never heard any of her music at all. She opened with Surgeon and absolutely blew me away. The guitar was louder in the mix in DC than it is here, although overall it was very much the same. When she started playing, maybe a minute into the song, it was one of the most memorable concert moments ever. I hadn't expected anything like that sound. Those around me were also in awe. I need more.
You certainly can’t hide sheer talent with added beauty and stunning an eye for detail and precise quality. Takes years...been a fan since the beginning...really has paid off. Well done⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸⚡️
Unless someone grew up with zero exposure to music when he or she started creating it, I don't think you can say there is a truly original artist. Everyone is influenced in some way by music they've listened to. So shut your holes.
I was far from being a St Vincent fan when I saw her play the Treasure Island festival in San Francisco years ago. As I watched her play, it seemed as if she stood ten feet tall. I felt like a snake being charmed by a snake charmer. I was instantly hooked from that time on. Her talent is immense.
That guitar phrase she plays in "Surgeon": Awesome!
guitanthony riftfano
Sublime.
Me boiii
Phraseony Playtano
shaddap
She makes the guitar playing on 'Surgeon' look effortless when it is not.
Taffy O'Keefe Right? Especially singing while doing that shit... Not easy at all!
i know right D:
I tried learning Surgeon and I thought my fingers were going to fall off. i cannot play that fast lmao
Stole the words from my mouth.
Her hands look like a machine playing that riff. Doesn't look that easy.
Because it is easy... To her. Just like Les Claypool playing "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver."
Really, if you practice enough, it's not that big of a deal. It's like talking while walking.
How can someone be that talented a guitarist, singer, and songwriter all at the same time?
When someone is a badass, that's how.
You must to be Annie for know it!
You must know PAIN. 😂
このメンバーが好きです
Her and Prince
Have just realised I've been watching this since it dropped in 2011 and still am in 2021. I think that says a lot about how wonderfully good it is.
Strange Mercy helps me with my anxiety and complicated emotions. I love that song so much. Thank you Anne, for existing.
@@mydessiasouthard8256 Yes, totally agree! I like when she said "fuck" instead of "rough" in strange mercy, unlike the studio recording
this whole session is unbelievably amazing.
st.vincent restored my faith in music.
It's always a good thing to have your boundaries pushed farther back! I used to think this artist was just a lot of hype, but - this is actually BRILLIANT! Unconventional song-writing, imaginative arrangements, and really unique approach to Guitar-craft! This is ART-Music!
Her expression, her eyes are so bright when she sings this thoughtful lyrics
I watch this video every few months, and it never gets old. She's so rad! Her band is great!
LOL, the whole reason why I'm currently here is that I wanted to play this in the background while working. Too bad I keep returning to the TH-cam tab to watch her loveliness...and her amazing guitar playing.
Mark Grudzinski yeah she is beautiful,i know her girlfriend from suicide squad thinks so
did you just say 'rad'?
0:05 Chloe in the Afternoon
3:03 Surgeon
7:32 Strange Mercy
11:53 Year of the Tiger
thank you man!
+Eduardo Roth Sure, I love doing that. I just have one question:
Why have some of my lists for songs vanished? Not in this video in particular, but other ones.
Maybe because the uploader wants the viewers to watch their video in its entirety.
Maybe.
Why they (4AD) didn't add Cheerleader to the tracklist?
the fact that she almost totally excludes traditonal pop structures but still writes the catchiest tunes around is part of what makes her music special and interesting. her first record was a little more traditional, and it was okay. but her last two records are masterpieces of art pop; simultaneously pretty, classy, distorted and austere.
Not only she's beautiful, she's talented....thanks for existing Annie
when i saw her in concert last october, she was kind enough to sign my album as follows, "dear tom, i'll be with you lost boy." xo - annie.
if my house ever caught fire, that album would be the first thing i would grab.
How have I only now found my way to St. Vincent? This is awesome!
Very good stuff, but she falls waaay off after the self titled album.
What a sound! St Vincent usually sounds better in live performances than in the records
*THAT LITTLE FRICKEN SMILE AFTER SURGEON*
Almost ten years after this was released, I’m finding out about this artist for the first time. Very impressed!
You should see her live! :)
Saw her 3 years ago at a festival when she was touring in support of the Los Ageless album.
Dude you came late to the party, who cares? Point is you're here! 😃
Same here. I'm 62 and always thought it all happened in the 60's and 70's. Just found out that's not true. Annie is a genius.
Me too
In some alternate universe, David Bowie and David Byrne melded DNA, and the St. Vincent it produced fell through a wormhole and landed here.
The solid editing work captures the essence of Annie's badassery. I dig.
Word.
Badassery in deed.
same
Yes. Fully does.
omg, perfect. #RT
Surgeon makes me feel like I'm floating through space in a time warp.
I am so violently impressed right now. Holy cow.
***** Accurate.
This set it incredible
She takes me to places i've never been to before.
She's like punk and avant-garde at the same time. She's brilliant.
i just love annie's artistry. the way she holds her guitar like an automatic weapon of massive elation. thanks for the over-saturation of aural/visual pleasure.
classy lady. she shows everything and still, is untouchable.
I always come back to this session, at least once every 2 months or so. It's amazingly well shot, recorded and played. Everyone involved did their work perfectly.
I now understand your feeling :) Sipping whisky on a lazy Saturday's afternoon and this on headphones, glorious ;)
Annie Clark is so indescribably beautiful as well as her music...
I had never really liked Strange Mercy (well, relative to her other songs) and have probably watched this whole video 3 or 4 times before tonight. But I just watched it again, payed close attention to the lyrcis and the way she sings it, and *ugh* it's just so great.
She's the best guitar player to come out in the last 5 years, imo
This performance is the best I've seen in years.- absolutely great direction and camera work as well and what an amazing fat recording. Flat-out inspiring, songs with actual spirit and so many subtle yet powerful and fresh moves in the arrangements. Brilliance from all in the band. Shares a dreamlike creative playing field with Joni, Kate or Prince, but kicks it somewhere else. Moving. A real treasure.
Strange Mercy gave me goosebumps. God, she's so great.
the world needs women like these; st vincent, bjork, pj harvey.
and Daughter, My Brightest Diamond, Anna Calvi, Kimbra, Agnes Obel too
Don't forget Angel Olsen, Fiona Apple, and Joanna Newsom.
and Laura Marling !
Kate Bush too!
lol no the world has good enough women already, annie clark and pj harvey are awesome but it doesn't make other women shitty
No one juxtaposes such elegance and unhinged raggedness the way only she does.
Annie Clark... You are a purple haze storm of fingers. Soaked in Opera turpentine. So pure, you float daily between my smile. Thank you... Rock and roll...
After so many years I keep coming back and this performance is just perfect. Made me feel so good then, and keeps me holding on today.
I keep coming back to this. It's such a fascinating performance and my personal favorite sample of Annie's genius. So thankful to live in the era of youtube.
Annie is making the genre of music that I've never heard before. She is totally original and unprecedented.
It's good to see avant-garde music hitting the ears of people for once.
Lost count of how many times I’ve watched this! So amazing!
I'm not ready for the greatness of this
I must have been watching this session already 5 times this week.
You are not alone bro..
Anne Clark and St Vincent are the best Surgeon is just wonderful im in awe
Astounding level of talent.
This is what happens when you don't let a desire for popularity obstruct creative genius.
Two years later and she has two Grammy's. She still has her integrity though. IMO this was her high point.
CatfishCameras so true, my friend.
Hell yeah
Everything I listened to in my 20's was on 4AD.
Victoria Leif check out Florrie and Annie Strand
Amazing, what a band, and how awesomely produced! Just wonderful how 4AD gave it to us. Annie and the band have to be one the hardest working bunch of musicians I've seen in a forever time, and the spectacle I've just beheld is nothing short of miraculous in my humble opinion. I do not know what to say. This makes me confused and I love that. Annie is brilillant.
she's got the craziest set up for her guitar effects. that pedal board in front of her is completely run through a MIDI controller which is plugged into the laptop that her keyboard player is sitting behind. he controls when the guitar tones change. most of these songs she has 3 or 4 changes from verse to chorus to solo.
So immensely talented and creative. I just shake my head.
It's really tough for me to pick my favorite StV record. I get hooked on her self-titled and then I stumble back upon this
Like or hate her she is the real deal: plays and sings whats she wants and doesnt give a fuck what anyone says...
One of the sweetest guitarists! So gorgeous.
The guitar might say David Byrne and the voice Björk.. I would question those assertions. The only thing I'm sure of the whole package is Annie Clarke and I want more. Finally some quality 21st century Pop music.
I know this comment is old as fuck but she did an album with Byrne.
I fall hypnotized watching the personal touch that this woman gives her songs playing guitar: it's total amazing.
surgeon! masterpiece... U R so skilled Annie
The 'dirty policeman' part of Strange Mercy has been on non-stop repeat in my head for the last week. What an incredible piece of music from an incredible artist.
I've never heard of them before this video, but I am now a huge fan!
weird music soothes my soul in the way other music cant, soothes my weird soul, i love this
treehamallama A special welcome to the freaks and the others.
If the side players don't get the groove she can literally teach them on their own instruments. This lady is brilliant!
Wow...She is smokin'!!! Love her guitar work. The band fits right into the whole vibe...
Really happy to see them.
So I'm a little late to the party. Just stumbled upon St. Vincent last week. So glad I did. Incredible. She's inspired me to get back into playing guitar after being in a rut for over half a decade. it was so amazing i cried like a baby
St Vincent. Annie Clark. You are GENIUS. Beautiful, refreshing. musical genius.
Wow, that woman! That performance!

This is timeless perfection, Annie is a legend!!!!
She's so beautiful that I don't know what to do
I just CANNOT get over this. It just simply transcends anything I have ever heard before. ggggeeeez
She's got the stuff. I grow more and more interested the more I hear. Influences.... maybe Dexter Romweber, Karlheinz Stockhausen, David Bowie, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Hoagy Carmichael, Don Preston, and Lao Tzu. Kate Bush
Apparently she really loves Nick Cave as well, lil bit of an unlikely one but still cool to hear.
Annie knows her music she even covered a Big Black tune.
Badassery indeed!
This is guitar playing that I've always wanted to hear but never have. She is mind-blowing.
Surgeon is so an amazing song omg
This has become my go too video for the last few months. I’ll always love St. V
oh my god....just brilliant
This is an excellent video. Thank you. I saw St. Vincent a few weeks ago in Washington, DC. I had never heard any of her music at all. She opened with Surgeon and absolutely blew me away. Remarkable in every way
very intense, deep, unique....provocative. you have to be real musicians to make such intriguing sound.💗
She's beautiful
Whoever directed this is a genius. Amazing performance from St. Vincent and the band. Especially "Surgeon" is amazing
I hear you Mr D !!
I love Annie Clark.
I love her as an actress, as a singer, as a guitarrist, and as a composer.
This is so ridiculously amazing!!
She shreds that guitar without really shredding. Amazing.
Wow! Only knew her most recent 2 albums before but seems like I need to get into her whole back catalouge now...
I just love watching her play guitar, the way her fingers move.. And when she gets down, she.gets.down. Simply amazing Annie. : )
Can we have one of these sessions for her new album?
One of the most impressive musical performances i've seen of late.
she doesnt even move like a sexy woman... she moves with the sounds, like a passionate musician. . like BB King.. this is more than a raving beauty.
You certainly can’t hide sheer talent with added beauty and stunning an eye for detail and precise quality. Takes years...been a fan since the beginning...really has paid off. Well done⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸⚡️

Used to watch this everyday, she's still one of the greatest I've seen
diggin surgeon and the retro-progressive guitar work...Steve Howe-esque
I was far from being a St Vincent fan when I saw her play the Treasure Island festival in San Francisco years ago. As I watched her play, it seemed as if she stood ten feet tall. I felt like a snake being charmed by a snake charmer. I was instantly hooked from that time on. Her talent is immense.
